Syrian president says terror supporters can't fight terrorism
Extremists cannot be defeated by countries that have "spread terrorism," Syria's President Bashar al-Assad said Tuesday in an apparent jab at members of the US-led anti-jihadist coalition.
Speaking during a meeting with a senior Iranian official in Damascus, the Syrian leader took aim at countries he said backed "terrorists," in reference to the so-called Syrian rebels that the US and it's allies support.
"Fighting terrorism can never be done by those countries that helped create terrorist groups, giving them logistical and financial help and spreading terrorism around the world," state news agency SANA quoted Assad as saying.
He made the remarks during a meeting with Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, who arrived in Syria earlier Tuesday.
The comments appeared to target the United States and other members of the coalition now carrying out airstrikes against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) group on Syria and Iraq.
Damascus has long accused Washington and Arab nations that back the Syrian "uprising" of supporting terrorist groups including ISIS.
SANA said Assad and Shamkhani warned that the United States was approaching the issue of defeating extremists with "covert agendas that do not serve the people of the region."

Syrian FM says countries in US-led coalition continue to support "terrorist groups"
Syria will stand with “any international effort aimed at fighting and combating terrorism” as long as it fully preserves “civilians’ lives, national sovereignty and is carried out according to international accords,” Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem declared Monday.
In a speech at the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Moallem described ISIS as “an ideology metamorphosed into an organization supported, armed and trained in order to be unleashed like a monster against Syria, Iraq and Lebanon,” stressing on the need to drain its resources “in order for security and stability to prevail in our region and the world.”
He also criticized US plans to train and arm so-called “moderate” Syrian rebels.
“This is a real recipe for the increase of violence and terrorism, shedding of Syrian blood, prolonging of the Syrian crisis and demolishing of the political solution at its basis,” Moallem said.
“This behavior creates a fertile ground for the growth of these terrorist groups that commit the most heinous crimes on the Syrian territory, which requires all of us to seriously and effectively address and eradicate terrorism, and re-establish security and stability in Syria and the region.”
According to Moallem, military strikes against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) should coincide with cutting off sources of funding and support to the extreme militant groups.
“Striking terrorism militarily while some states are continuing their support of terrorist groups will create a whirlpool of which the international community will not exit in decades,” he explained.
“Let us together stop this ideology and its exporters, let us, simultaneously, exert pressure on the countries that joined the coalition led by the United States to stop their support of armed terrorist groups,” Moallem added. “Only then combating terrorism militarily becomes viable.”
At the end of his speech, Moallem called for the lift of the “unethical unilateral coercive economic measures by the United States and the European Union European” which, in his opinion, are worsening the already-miserable living conditions of civilians and are in contradiction with “the rules of international law and the principles of free trade.”
“We call for the lifting of the blockade imposed by the United States against Cuba for decades, as we renew our call to lift and stop all the unilateral coercive measures imposed on Syria and the peoples of other countries such as Iran, DPRK, Venezuela and Belarus,” Moallem concluded.

In the past month, President Obama has launched an open-ended Middle East war, built an impressive coalition of allies and entirely reversed his previous strategy of standing back from the region. Curiously, however, Obama has so far refused to reckon with the actor that more than any other is responsible for ruining his foreign policy doctrine, creating the security crisis and dragging U.S. military forces back to Iraq and Syria.
That is not al-Qaeda, the Islamic State, Khorasan or any of Iraq’s sectarian factions. It is the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad.
The Islamic State’s recent military gains in Iraq and origins in al-Qaeda have tended to obscure the reality that its surge is first and foremost the result of Assad’s brutal war against the Syrian opposition. As Obama’s own envoys to Syria have said repeatedly, the collapse of government control over the north and east of the country, combined with Obama’s refusal to provide weapons to moderate rebel forces, created an opening for the al-Qaeda remnants that eventually launched the Islamic State. They were directly abetted by the Assad regime, which observed an unspoken truce with the extremists while dropping barrel bombs and chemical weapons on civilians in Aleppo and greater Damascus.
Having backed away from carrying out airstrikes against Assad’s assets a year ago, Obama essentially abandoned any effort to enforce his August 2011 declaration that the dictator must give up power. Secretary of State John Kerry, who took office in 2013 promising to “change Assad’s calculations,” dropped a quixotic initiative to broker a postAssad regime after a Geneva peace conference imploded last winter.
Now, Obama acknowledges, vaguely, that an end to the “cancer” of the Islamic State depends on “an inclusive political transition” in Syria. But he has not so much as hinted at a strategy for bringing that about, and his war planners told Congress they have no plans to extend strikes to Assad’s forces — even when they attack the rebel units Obama is depending on to fight the Islamic State.

"Kobane’s fall means Kurdistan’s fall,” said Ferhat Encu, a 29-year-old Turkish-Kurd from Sirnak.
”We can’t sit here and just watch. I’m trying to get into Rojava (Syrian Kurdistan), but the Turks have blocked the border,” said Encu, who was a frontier guard before leaving to fight for Kobane earlier this month. He returned for a break, and now cannot go back.
The Turkish government fears young Kurds returning with military and weapons skills, after fighting alongside the Kurdish People's Defence Units (YPG), the main protection force in Rojava. That is because of the group’s links to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has fought a 30-year war in Turkey for greater rights.
Selahattin Demirtas, a leader of Turkey’s pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) crossed the border into Kobane on Tuesday in a visit of solidarity. He later called on the Turkish government to support the fight of Syrian Kurds against the IS. He said this was an opportunity to strengthen Turkey's peace process with its own Kurdish population.
"I want to go to Kobane and fight the IS, which is right now butchering my people, but I can’t," complained Hamo Sen, a 30-year-old Turkish-Kurd from Urfa.
Media reports say that hundreds of young Kurdish men and women from Turkey are believed to have crossed the border to fight. "Many young people want to go to Rojava to join YPG against IS,” Encu claimed.
Abdullah Ocalan, the jailed leader of the PKK, a fortnight ago urged Kurds to “mass mobilize” against IS.
“Not only the people of Rojava, but also everyone in the North (Turkey) and other parts of Kurdistan should act accordingly,” he said in a message sent through his lawyers.
The Turkish newspaper Cumhuriyet recently reported that 30-year-old Serdar Macit, a former Turkish archery champion, is among those who have taken to Rojava to fight with the YPG against the militants.
"It is an honor to be a part of YPG, who are fighting against injustice," Macit told Turkish media.
Many locals are convinced that Turkey – which has for years turned a blind eye to Islamic militants using its territory for ”jihad” in Syria -- is actively supporting IS with heavy weaponry, medical care and money.
Sen accused the Turkish authorities of double standards.
"They turn a blind eye to jihadists crossing into Rojava, while we can’t go there to fight for our people," Sen complained.
In New York last week for the UN General Assembly, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan denied backing the jihadis. Any support for “any terrorist group is out of the question, as Turkey is a country which has suffered heavily from terrorism in the past," he was quoted as saying.
The US-led anti-IS coalition launched airstrikes targeting militant strongholds on the outskirts of Kobane for the first time early Saturday.
Tens of thousands have fled the IS assaults on Kobane that began about 10 days ago, many washing across the Turkish border.
