Ik denk dat het op een bepaalde manier juist makkelijker was dan nu. Alle details van het huishouden, de etiquette van bezoekjes, wat je aantrok: werkelijk alles volgde duidelijke regels, er was een rotsvaste dagindeling en juist het volstrekte gebrek aan vrijheid - hoe verschrikkelijk dat anderzijds ook is - maakte wel dat je eigenlijk nauwelijks nog na hoefde te denken: en ergens geeft dat natuurlijk structuur en vastigheid.

Inderdaad. Ik woon zelf in de bible belt en vanuit de kant van mijn vader was het nogal streng hervormd in huis toen ik klein was, dus ik heb er wel wat van meegekregen. Ik ben er al heel snel als vrijdenkende atheist uitgerold, maar ik snap wel heel goed waarom mensen behoefte hebben aan de strikte regels voor het dagelijks leven die bepaalde religies met zich meebrengen.
