Abkhazia elects opposition leader as president

(Reuters) - Georgia's Russian-backed breakaway province of Abkhazia elected opposition leader Raul Khadzhimba as president on Sunday, the head of the region's election commission said.

Commission head Batal Tabagua told journalists that Khadzimba received 50.57 percent of the vote, while his main rival Aslan Bzhania received 35.91 percent.

According to Russia's Itar-Tass news agency all four candidates are proponents of closer relations with Russia, but none advocates the region becomes part of Russia.

Former leader Alexander Ankvab was forced to resign over allegations of corruption and misrule. Protesters broke into the presidential administration building in the main city, Sukhumi, in May.

Abkhazia, a province in the Black Sea region, together with another Georgian region, South Ossetia, had been the focal point of a war between Georgia and Russia in 2008. Now Abkhazia relies on Moscow's financial and political assistance.

Georgia considers elections in Abkhazia illegal, Interfax news agency quoted Georgia's Foreign Ministry as saying earlier on Sunday.

Russia, which angered the United States by recognizing Abkhazia as an independent state, will be watching the situation closely amid tense relations with the West after annexing another breakaway region, Crimea, from Ukraine in March.

Before the unrest, the next presidential election in Abkhazia had been expected in 2016.

Abkhazia broke from Georgian rule in a 1992-1993 war after the Soviet collapse. Moscow recognized it as an independent state after Russia fought a five-day war with Georgia in 2008, and at the same time strengthened control over the region.

With just 240,000 people, Abkkhazia is made up of a mix of ethnic groups. It borders the Russian resort city of Sochi.

"Ukraine calls for the settlement of the conflict in Georgia based on the principles and norms of international law," the ministry said.

Main events unfolded at the south-east from Donetsk, in the settlement of Ilovaisk. As a result of these battles, the Ukrainian forces here constituted out of a composite group and the units of Battalions Donbass and Dnepr-1 unit was surrounded and exposed to massive shelling by the Army of Novorossiya. Spare Ukrainian army units were rushed through there, in particular Battalions Azov and Shakhtersk, as well as ZSU units (17th Tank and 93rd Mechanized Brigades). By the end of the day, Ilovaisk was almost entirely liberated from the Ukrainian forces and controlled by the Militia. Motorolas unit captured many battle trophies. Ilovaisk is an important center of resistance for the DRP.

Rusland heeft Oekra�ne laten weten dat het van plan is opnieuw een konvooi met hulpgoederen voor Oost-Oekra�ne te sturen.

''De humanitaire situatie (in het oosten van Oekra�ne) wordt niet beter, maar slechter'', zei Lavrov. Hij zei dat de regering in Moskou een overeeenkomst met de regering in Kiev nastreeft over de voorwaarden waaronder een tweede konvooi dezelfde route kan volgen als het eerste konvooi.

Een groot Russisch hulpkonvooi stak vrijdag zonder toestemming van Oekra�ne de grens over. Oekra�ne noemde dat een invasie, maar ondernam niets tegen de vrachtwagens die hulpgoederen kwamen brengen. Het konvooi keerde zaterdag terug in Rusland.

De presidenten van Rusland en Oekra�ne, Vladimir Poetin en Petro Porosjenko, spreken elkaar dinsdag in de Wit-Russische hoofdstad Minsk. Lavrov zei dat Rusland ''langs elke diplomatieke weg'' een einde wil maken aan het conflict tussen de regering in Kiev en de pro-Russische separatisten in het oosten van Oekra�ne. Hij hoopt dat in Minsk ook de nijpende situatie van de bevolking van Oost-Oekra�ne aan de orde komt.
