Death Toll of Ukrainian Conflict Reaches 1,134 people - IGCPThe Information Group on Crimes against the Person (IGCP) continues its weekly monitoring of the number of victims of the Ukrainian civil conflict, starting from February 22, 2014.
As estimated by IGCP, the minimal amount of total losses of combatants and civilians during the so-called “Anti-Terrorist Operation” (ATO) from July 1-15, 2014, is 337 people, including 127 Ukrainian law enforcers, 88 volunteers and 122 civilians. The total number of wounded is not less than 576 people, including 373 Ukrainian soldiers and 203 civilians.
Meanwhile, the official data information center of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) of Ukraine reduced the number of deaths to 58 from July 1-15, 2014, and the number of wounded to 373. These figures, however, are too low. IGCP experts collected information on deaths during the reported period of 127 Ukrainian soldiers, a significant amount of who were known by name. There is no doubt that the real losses Ukrainian soldiers are even more significant, perhaps ever one and a half to two times as much.
Information from militia representatives concerning their losses and casualties of civilians is extremely fragmented. IGCP experts gathered information on 88 militias killed from July 1-15, 2014, but the actual losses are likely to exceed this figure two or three times more.
In contrast to the abundance of fallen combatants, the number of dead and wounded civilians can be set with greater accuracy thanks to the attention paid to them by the media and daily reports published by the Research Affairs of Ukraine in the Lugansk region. According to generalized information of IGCP experts from July 1-15, 2014, in the ATO area, 122 civilians were killed and 203 injured. The actual numbers of the casualties among the civilian population can be greater, state experts, however not by much. The vast majority of affected civilians were victims of indiscriminate shell attacks and air strikes inflicted on residential areas by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
“Generalized data show that the activation of ATO led to a sharp increase in civilian casualties. Contrary to the claims of official Kiev, Ukrainian armed forces carried out indiscriminate shelling and air raids on settlements. Most of the civilians taken into account by our experts suffered precisely from these activities of the Ukrainian security officials. I would like to draw attention to the fact that even taking the lowest figures, during the past two weeks the intensification of the ATO, more people were killed than in any previous month. This shows the growth of the scope and intensity of fighting in Southeastern Ukraine—this is tragic, yet in my opinion, the number of fatalities will only increase. The situation can be amended only if Kiev immediately ends hostilities, however, it seems as if this cannot be hoped for”, asserted IGCP Coordinator Alexander Dyukov.
Thus, by estimates of IGCP, the minimum total number of people killed in the Ukrainian civil conflict in the period from February 22- July 15, 2014, is no less than 1134 people.
