Russia starts reinforcing naval fleet in Crimea
Russia said on Wednesday that it had begun expanding its Black Sea fleet based in Crimea with new ships and submarines, months after annexing the peninsula from Ukraine.
"Today we have started forming a powerful Black Sea fleet with an absolutely different level of air service, coastal missile and artillery troops and marines," said Alexander Vitko, the Black Sea fleet commander, in a message to servicemen
President Putin said at a meeting with the national security council on Tuesday that Russia will bolster its defences to counter the creeping influence of NATO close to its borders.
"It is necessary to implement all of the country's defence measures fully and promptly, including of course in Crimea and Sevastopol, where we have to de facto create military infrastructure from scratch," he said.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk said on Wednesday Kiev would impose sanctions on Russian individuals and companies who support "terrorists" directly or indirectly.
He told a meeting of his ministers that he had set up a special committee which had 10 days to propose a list of individuals and companies to be covered by the punitive measures.
He did not give details of what form the sanctions would take. [Reuters]

Novosti Donbassa reports, citing Telekritika, that Anton Skiba, a Ukrainian journalist who has previously reported for them, has been abducted in Donetsk.

Ze kunnen wel zeggen dat de separatisten winnen bij de grens, maar als het Oekraense leger steeds verder oprukt kunnen ze die troepen ook weer gebruiken om die omcirkeling te doorbreken, dat dat ook nog niet is gebeurd doet mij afvragen in hoeverre die troepen bij de grens echt in de problemen zijn.

Ukrainian forces have recaptured Donetsk airport and reached the city's outskirts, a militia commander said on Wednesday.
However, the city itself is under the militia control, said Igor Strelkov, the defense minister of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic.
“The enemy has unblocked the airport and reached the north-western outskirts of Donetsk,” Novorossiya news agency quoted Strelkov as saying. “They will try to encircle us and make us retreat as it was done in Sloviansk,” he said.
Militia forces “have been moving back to the central part of Donetsk” under Ukrainian army's pressure, the Ukrainian military said adding that Luhansk, Horlivka, Donetsk, Avdeyevka and several sections of the Ukrainian state border remain under the militia control.

At least three civilians have been killed and another 10 injured in the shelling of east Ukraines Luhansk by the Ukrainian army over the last 24 hours, the city councils press office said on Wednesday.
The Ukrainian military shelled several districts of the city, seriously damaging several dozen residential buildings, destroying a house in Vostochnaya Street and smashing windows in schools, the press office said.
The Ukrainian armys artillery fire damaged the citys vital infrastructural facilities. The targeted fire damaged several electric power substations and cut off electricity supply in several districts and an emergency care hospital.
Over 35,000 households have been left without electricity and over 4,000 families without water supply.
Gas pipeline stretches have been damaged in several districts of the city. Over 300 families have been left without household gas in the settlement of Yekaterinovka.

(Reuters) - Pro-Russian rebels shot down two Ukrainian fighter jets on Wednesday, not far from where a Malaysian airliner was brought down last week in eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 passengers on board.
Igor Strelkov, who is now in charge of the rebel ranks in the eastern city of Donetsk, said the separatists had brought down one plane and that the pilot had ejected. He gave no further details.
Fierce fighting raged near the rebels' two main centers in Donetsk and nearby Luhansk, where they have been pushed back by Ukrainian government forces, who have taken control of villages and suburbs around the cities.
Earlier on Tuesday, Kiev said the separatists were leaving their positions on the outskirts of Donetsk and retreating towards the city center.
Residents said the rebels, who rose up in April demanding independence from Kiev in the mainly Russian-speaking east, had dug trenches in downtown Donetsk outside the main university, where they have been living in student dormitories.
"In Donetsk, rebels abandoned their positions en masse and went towards the central part of the city," the headquarters of what Kiev calls its "anti-terrorist operation" said in a statement.
"It cannot be ruled out that the appearance of such movements could suggest the spread of panic and attempts to leave the place of warfare."
Residents said they had heard shelling during the night and a shell struck a chemical plant in the city, causing a fire.
Local health officials said 432 people had been killed and 1,015 wounded since hostilities started in the Donetsk region following the removal of a president in Kiev who was sympathetic to Moscow and after Russia's annexation of the Crimea region.

LONDON (AP) — Britain is still authorizing the export of arms and military equipment to Russia despite the government's call for tough sanctions over Moscow's arming of separatist rebels in Ukraine, a group of lawmakers said Wednesday.
A group of legislative committees that oversee arms export controls said there are 251 export licenses in place for sale of goods worth at least 132 million pounds ($225 million) to Russia. The report did not detail actual exports, simply the licenses.
The permits cover sniper rifles, night sights, small arms ammunition, gun mountings, body armor, military communications equipment, and "equipment employing cryptography."

Welke rol hebben wij -het Westen- vervuld bij lange afstandsoorlogen in Syri, Irak, Afghanistan, Libi? Kijk eens hoe die landen er aan toe zijn, dankzij onze inmenging. Over destabiliseren gesproken, wederom de ironie.
De EU kan maar n rol vervullen. Dat is aan tafel gaan met de Russen en Oekrane via de Dnepr in 2-en snijden. Conflict in n keer opgelost, via het Joegoslavi model. Op weg naar een duurzame toekomst en samenwerking met de Russen. Oekrane in z'n volledigheid claimen, zoals nu gebeurt is de route naar verdoemenis. De Russen hebben altijd het laatste woord, let op mijn woorden. En de VS lachen de EU vierkant uit (verdeel en heers). Angela Merkel is mijn enige hoop hierin -die lijkt het te begrijpen.
