EDIT: Ok, seriously y'all. LIFE IS NOT PERFECT. If you were expecting the perfect fairy tale ending where they all live happily ever after, come on now. The writers DIDN'T. HIMYM has always been about breaking stupid sitcom stereotypes. Its done that for a long time. This is a continuation of that. If you think there weren't lingering feelings between Ted and Robin, you are delusional. She wasn't good for the position Ted was in, absolutely. He wanted kids, and to settle down. Now they are older. Ted has had 6 years to get over a wonderful girl that he had two kids with, he got to spend 10 years. Now he's in a different position. Robin has been a part of his kid's lives, they have known her since they were making stupid little crayon drawings as we saw earlier in the series. They like her. She's been there and been involved now, she clearly gave up her constant traveling. But she never settled down, because she still had feelings for Ted. Ted now has a family. He has his kids, and his suburban home. They are growing up. Now, him and Robin CAN WORK. They couldn't work before, but you have to recognize that times change. People die tragically early, and people move on, maybe having a re-re-re-return. Its a reflection of the unexpectedness of life. It breaks the sitcom mold. That's why I like it.
Barney and Robin? It was NOT Barney's fault. Robin had misplaced priorities then. She was not ready for a commitment as much as she thought she was. She put career first, like she always said she would. But, she ended up realizing it did not fulfill her, and she wanted more. She came to the point that Ted and his kids were what she needed and wanted in her life. Barney got his commitment too. He has a daughter. He has grown up. That's his everything now. He has matured and grown greatly. I'd expect he eventually settled down too.
Marshal and Lilly. They had a family. It gets hard to spend time together then. But, they still made a huge effort to keep in touch. To be involved. But the growing apart with different careers is to be expected. They would end up in Albany when Marshal becomes a NY State Supreme Court Justice. Barney and Robin's traveling kept all them apart, and they grew apart. It happens! But when they got back in the same area, they got back together again. They remain friends, even if they grow apart somewhat.
And the mother? Yes, the show was supposed to be about meeting her. MEETING HER. Not happily ever after. They had 10 years together. Their relationship was far from their ideal too. They didn't get married until years in when they had two kids already. Then she passed a few years later. Did you expect Ted to never move on, never try to find happiness with someone else? Like, his closest female friend of nearly a decade who he kept in contact with and who his kids love? Seems like a pretty good person to move on with! He took 6 years to move on, and that makes sense with how Ted is. Robin grew in those in between years, she went from career first before friends and family, to back in her old apartment, back talking to her old friends, being involved in her close friend's life and his kids' lives. She is now in the place for Ted, and he for her.
