"The Egyptian Security forces just shot live ammunition on protestors in Ramses as well as tear gas. On the way to the rallies our driver was stopped and thugs accused my husband of being ikhwan (muslim brotherhood) because he has a beard and told him they were going to kill him. They put a knife to his throat and a gun to his face and began to swear about Islam and those who are Islamists. They began to hit him and a group tried to pull me out of the car and take my purse saying I must have a weapon. I was screaming at them and Mohammad was getting out to defend me. There were about 15 of them and I knew they were going to kill him. The driver kept yelling that we were Canadian. They demanded proof and he pulled out my husband's wallet and showed his i.d. Mohammad was yelling at them and pushing their hands away to move their weapons and leave us alone. By the grace of Allah they stopped. What is this country coming to? They are organized thugs doing the dirty work of the police trying to stop people from going to the rallies. Egyptians you have no choice but to show your dissent in the streets or you'll live in fear forever."

'Diepe kloof in samenleving'
