Tijdens een persconferentie die zojuist door Sony is gegeven op de Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, is senior staff engineer Chris Norden uitgebreid ingegaan op de verbeteringen die de DualShock 4-controller heeft ten opzichte van de oude controller.

Iets wat veel PlayStation-eigenaren irriteerde was het feit dat de PlayStation 3 aan moet staan om de controllers via usb op te kunnen laden, wat vooral een doorn in het oog was van gamers die zelf hun elektriciteitsrekening moeten betalen. Sony lost dit nu op door het mogelijk te maken om de DualShock 4 oplaadbaar te maken terwijl de PlayStation 4 in standby staat.

Verder ging Norden dieper in op de tech specs van de DualShock 4. Zo zou de controller over dual vibration beschikken en is de latency verlaagd, oftewel de tijd tussen het op een knopje drukken en wanneer het signaal verwerkt word. Ook zou de zogeheten deadzone nu kleiner moeten zijn - de oppervlakte rond het midden van de analoge sticks waar de controller niet reageert op de input. Tevens zijn de L1 en R1 knoppen voortaan digitaal in plaats van analoog.

Daarnaast liet Sony ook nog het nieuwe ID-systeem zien. Elke gamer heeft voortaan twee identiteiten; een nickname en zijn of haar echte naam. Standaard zijn echte namen niet zichtbaar, maar is het wel mogelijk voor gamers ook Facebook-vrienden zijn.

Ook werd er verklapt dat de PlayStation 4 standaard wordt geleverd met een headset, in tegenstelling tot de PlayStation 3.

Als de knoppen op de nieuwe controller digitaal zijn, en Sony PS2- en PS3-games via streaming aan wil bieden, ben ik benieuwd hoe ze de dat gaan aanpakken voor de games die van de analoge besturing gebruik maken.

Sony, he said, approached AMD based on the company's track record with the Xbox 360, Wii and other consoles, effectively skipping over Nvidia, which provided the chips for the PS3.

"[Sony's] approach - and they've said this publicly over the last couple of days here at GDC - was, 'We looked at some of the ways that we approached hardware in the past, and we wanted to improve.' And they looked at us as being able as being able to provide that."

AMD could provide an integrated solution through its APU that Nvidia couldn't, he continued, by optimizing information flows, generating greater performance, better power and heat efficiency, and by providing tools and dev relationships to provide the PS4 a strong launch.

"We could say, 'Hey look, these guys already know how to develop on a PC architecture.' It's something that's really familiar to them and we showed Sony the tool chains and the work flows that had been developed by all these content developers that would very easily be able to move over."

Kan de ps4 ook ps3 games af spelen?

Nee! Alleen gaan ze het wel mogelijk maken om ps3 games te streamen waardoor je ze wel op je ps4 speelt in principe maar weet niet of dat geld gaat kosten.

Dat betekent dat de knoppen - in tegenstelling tot de PS2 en PS3 - niet drukgevoelig zijn, wat hetgene is waar ik op doelde. Hoe willen ze dit gaan emuleren in spellen die hier gebruik van maken? Het zijn er niet veel, maar ik ben toch nieuwsgierig.

Wanneer laten ze dat klere apparaat een keer zien dan?

En dan moet je je nog bedenken dat dit waarschijnlijk nog 'even gauw' in elkaar is gezet.

Niks mis met de specificaties van de PlayStation 4: zeker als je je bedenkt dat je een all-in-one systeem krijgt waarop je de komende (hopelijk minstens) 5 jaar de nieuwste games kan spelen in fatsoenlijke kwaliteit, films kan kijken, muziek luisteren plus alle nieuwe functionaliteit die er t.o.v. de PS3 nu nog eens bijkomt!

PlayStation 4 developers have access to 7 GB RAM: rumor
The PlayStation 4 will ship with a massive 8 GB of GDDR5 memory, which is a huge upgrade compared to the current generation consoles. However, according to a PlayStation 4 developer PS4Daily spoke to, they have access to “only” 7 GB of RAM. The remaining 1 GB is reserved for the operating system and background tasks.

Sony showcased a lot of PlayStation 4 features during the unveiling in February. This includes deep social features running in the background, new sharing options where players can watch each other play, and background downloading of games. All this chews up quite a bit of memory. Still, having access to 7 GB of super-fast GDDR5 memory is a lot better than the 512 MB in the PS3.

Sony originally shipped dev kits to third party developers with only 4 GB RAM, and kept the true RAM amount secret from third party developers in order to keep it secret from Microsoft as well. Developers learned about the 8 GB of memory when the rest of the world did — during the February unveiling.

In addition to 8 GB of RAM, the PlayStation 4 sports an 8 core CPU and a GPU with 18 compute units, both part of the same APU package made by AMD. Sony worked close with developers to give them a console that’s tailored for games. Sony interviewed major game engine makers such as Epic (Unreal Engine 4), CryTek (CryEngine 3), and Id Software (Id Tech 5), asking them what they wanted out of next generation consoles. Overall, Sony worked closely with developers to create a console that made it easy to create games.

When it comes to large operating systems taking up a lot of RAM, Sony isn’t alone. Nintendo did something similar with the Wii U. The Wii U ships with 2 GB or RAM, but half of it — 1 GB — is allocated to the operating system itself. As console makers add more and more features, they need more and more memory to run those features. Microsoft is even rumored to include advanced DVR functionality in the upcoming Xbox 720, which will no doubt require copious amounts of RAM.

Sony is expected to reveal more PlayStation 4 details at E3 in June. We’re also hearing that this is when some of the NDAs will be lifted, where developers will be more free to talk about the specifics of the new console.

Het zou wel gaaf zijn als je kon "laten zien" dat je al PS3 games in de kast hebt liggen, door ze even in de PS4 te doen.. authentication -> streamen op PS4.

Ik ga er namelijk niet nog een keer voor betalen
