De verwachtingen waren na Batman Begins en The Dark Kinght torenhoog. Achteraf bekruipt me een gevoel dat die verwachtingen niet volledig zijn ingelost, maar slecht is het allemaal niet. Het is een beetje hetzelfde als met Inception: goed, misschien wel erg goed, maar door de enorme verwachtingen toch een lichte teleurstelling.

Beginnend met de mindere punten, vond ik vooral Bane enigszins tegenvallen. Zijn rauwe stem uit de eerste trailers die hem een echte villain maakte is veel verstaanbaarder gemaakt en dat werkt tegen, omdat het veel minder donker wordt en Hardy dankzij het masker beperkt lijkt in zijn gezichtsexpressies. Zijn lichaamstaal en actiescènes zijn daarentegen wel zeer sterk, maar toch vond ik hem de minste villain van de drie films. En dat terwijl hij een behoorlijk voorname rol in de film speelt.

Er zijn ook net wat teveel voorspelbaarheden, die ik niet zal spoileren. Waar Nolan in Inception net iets teveel uit wilde leggen aan de kijker, gebeurt dat nu weer, gelukkig in mindere mate. Het tekent echter de paar barstjes in het scenario, dat tegen het einde toch moet boeten voor de vele inhoud. Het mag gelukkig niet al te zeer deren, want dit wordt ruimschoots gecompenseerd door de fantastische actie.

Helaas is de diepgang minder enerverend, vooral omdat het enigszins bekend voorkomt (Batman Begins). Toch is het nog altijd meer dan prima kost over getormenteerde zielen en het laten varen van principes en dat maakt deze trilogie zo sterk. Het duurt even voordat dit goed op gang komt, maar dankzij het sterke samenspel tussen Zimmer en Nolan is de daadwerkelijke wederopstanding toch hét moment van de film.

Is het dan een slechte film? Nee, totaal niet zelfs. De lat ligt echter extreem hoog en dan mag je best kritisch zijn. De acteurs zetten stuk voor stuk prima rollen neer, een paar hele kleine uitzonderingen daargelaten. Zimmer levert wederom een fantastische score af die je op je IMAX-stoelen doet trillen en Nolan heeft wederom laten zien één van de beste regisseurs van het moment te zijn. En dan zijn er nog de schitterende beelden, en het feit dat deze Batman de inhoudelijk meest intrigerende superheld is en blijft. Dat wordt ‘gewoon’ weer bevestigd.

Zo is er voor ieder minpunt wel een pluspunt te noemen en weet Nolan de mankementen voldoende te verbergen met zijn bombastische aanpak. Helaas is de diepgang, die van deze Batman een échte superheld maakte, wat minder aanwezig dan bij de eerste twee films. Gelukkig zijn er dan nog de fantastische beelden, de muziek, de acteurs en de twee voorgaande films waarop gebouwd kan worden. Een waardig slot van een fantastische trilogie.

Spin-off chatter has followed Anne Hathaway's portrayal of Selina Kyle, but it seems unlikely that any future films will include director Christopher Nolan or his awesomely assembled cast of Gothamites.

"My time in Gotham, looking after one of the greatest and most enduring figures in pop culture, has been the most challenging and rewarding experience a filmmaker could hope for," Nolan wrote in The Art of Making the Dark Knight Trilogy. "I will miss the Batman. I like to think that he’ll miss me, but he’s never been particularly sentimental." (For her part, Hathaway said she'd be interested in a Catwoman movie, but only with the "right people".)

With that in mind, Nolan has some sage advice for whoever replaces him as the mayor of Gotham City.

"When I first met with Paul Levitz of DC Comics prior to 'Batman Begins,' he explained to me clearly that Batman, of all superheroes, has thrived on reinterpretation and almost is strengthened by it. And I'm talking about over the years in the comic books but also in the movie," he told Empire (via JoBlo.com). "So when the time is right, whenever someone does whatever the next iteration of the character is, they simply need to be true to whatever it is they want to see, to what they believe in, not worry too much about what everyone else is telling them it should be."

The end of "The Dark Knight Rises" leaves open the possibility of continuing the franchise in an exciting way, but were that to happen don't expect Nolan to get behind the camera for a fourth time. Not that he's leaving superheros behind all together: Nolan is executive producer on "Man of Steel," the Warner Bros. reboot of Superman that director Zack Snyder is bringing to the screen next summer. Maybe if everyone asked him nicely, he could do something similar for the studio on the next Batman? Fingers crossed?

But once I knew where it would take Bruce, and when I started to see glimpses of the antagonist, it became essential. We re-assembled the team and went back to Gotham. It had changed in three years. Bigger. More real. More modern. And a new force of chaos was coming to the fore. The ultimate scary clown, as brought to terrifying life by Heath. We’d held nothing back, but there were things we hadn’t been able to do the first time out — a Batsuit with a flexible neck, shooting on Imax. And things we’d chickened out on — destroying the Batmobile, burning up the villain’s bloodmoneyto show a complete disregard for conventional motivation. We took the supposedsecurityof a sequel as license to throw caution to the wind and headed for the darkest corners of Gotham.
I never thought we’d do a third — are there any great second sequels? But I kept wondering about the end of Bruce’s journey, and once David and I discovered it, I had to see it for myself. We had come back to what we had barely dared whisper about in those first days in my garage. We had been making a trilogy. I called everyone back together for anothertour ofGotham. Four years later, it was still there. It even seemed a littlecleaner, a little more polished. Wayne Manor had been rebuilt. Familiar faces were back — a little older, a little wiser… but not all was as it seemed.
Gotham was rotting away at itsfoundations. A new evil bubbling up from beneath. Bruce had thought Batman was not needed anymore, but Bruce was wrong, just as I had been wrong. The Batman had to come back. I suppose he always will.
Michael, Morgan, Gary, Cillian, Liam, Heath, Christian… Bale. Names that have come to mean so much to me.
