2005 Silverline 1705 LS
Category Bowrider
Length 16ft 6in / 4.88 m
The 17-ft bowrider, powered by a three-litre sterndrive, is practically the standard "starter" boat among recreational boaters in Canada, as well as being a perfect runabout for the vast majority of Canadian cottagers.

That doesn't mean, though, that it is easy to design and build. The sizeand- power envelope may be welldefined, but those limitations also mean there's
little room for error.
With a few minor reservations, the Silverline 1705 succeeds. It's a handsome and speedy boat with some dandy cockpit design features and a forgiving, easily driven hull.
The 1705's hull was designed by a well-known naval architect several years ago for the prior owners of the Silverline boat building enterprise. The current owner of Silverline - Winnipeg-based InterNautic Marine Group - has wisely stuck with it. Powered by a MerCruiser 3.0 L sterndrive, the boat planes in a matter of seconds, hitting 20 mph in just over five seconds and 30 mph in 7.1 seconds.
Top speed is a respectable and sporty 44.9 mph during GPS speed trials. It cruises comfortably at 25.7 mph at 3,000 rpm and 31.1 mph at 3,500 rpm. At 2,500 rpm, the boat is still solidly on plane. Quick turns and slaloms fail to rattle it; for extra-sharp turns, just trim in the drive slightly and carve. The boat will be fine for recreational watersports, day-trips or allround cottage livery.
InterNautic has added some sharp hull colours to improve the boat's dock appeal. Our test boat looked great in green. The convertible top helped keep me dry on test day, a miserable, windy day with teeming rain, on the St. Maurice River in Shawinigan, Que.
The 1705's main cockpit layout is great.By pushing the engine mount aft as far as possible, using a moulded "bump-out" that almost bisects the swim platform, increased cockpit legroom is created, a full-width aft bench seat possible. There are swiveling and sliding bucket seats at helm and companion positions.
Forward, the bow compartment has more of a U-shaped area than the standard V configuration. By dropping the notion that the two side-cushions must be symmetrical, Silverline has created a bow seating area that is more rounded, with visual appeal and more usable space.
Back in the main cockpit, there are thoughtful finishing touches including well-placed grabhandles, grey carpeted floors, a huge gelcoat-finished glovebox, a Clarion M-335 Magitone Marine AM-FM CD stereo and two speakers.
At the helm, the gauges are wellplaced for good visibility. On the test boat, though, the black-faced gauges are very hard to read in their black moulded instrument insert at the helm. White-faced gauges would be better. Also, the black insert has wavy edges that are clearly visible against the white gelcoat of the helm console. A lighter-coloured insert (or one with crisper edges) would have worked better.
As a boat intended for both the starter boat and cottage runabout markets, the 1705 must be competitively priced.A few minor upgrades, though, would pay dividends in finish quality and comfort. The white vinyl seats are nicely finished on the test boat, with silver accents and green piping, but would be greatly improved by a more sculpted shape.
As for storage space, there's plenty: under the aft seat, the bow seats and the cockpit floor; in nets attached to the coamings;and in netted-off areas in the engine compartment, alongside the engine.
Cottagers and first-time boaters don't have massive storage needs, but must have a place for everything. Like an easily driven hull and careful cockpit design, it has to be part of the plan.
Test boat engine: Test boat engine: Mercury MerCruiser 3.0L 135 hp, 3.0 litre carbureted inline four-cylinder gasoline engine turning a 21-inch aluminum prop through an Alpha One drive.
