Mika Salo and the Finnish press are intrigued as the former F1 driver prepares to test a modern Ferrari later this month. Newspapers Ilta and Turun Sanomat, and the broadcaster MTV3, report that the 45-year-old former Toyota driver has been drafted in to test a Ferrari at Suzuka.

On the face of it, Salo's drive is simply a case of his old employer - the Finn replaced the injured Michael Schumacher in 1999 - inviting a former driver to the Ferrari Racing Days event at the Japanese grand prix venue.

But "I was very surprised when they called me," Salo admitted, "because I haven't been seriously involved in formula one for ten years.

"I tried to ask them if this is just a 'show run' drive, but they have given me no more information than that," he said.

"They have Giancarlo Fisichella, Marc Gene and Andrea Bertolini (as test drivers), so it's not exactly clear to me why they are not driving."

Salo's Suzuka run will take place on the weekend of the season opening Australian grand prix, reportedly at the wheel of a 2010 car -- the newest F1 car able to be driven within the sport's strict testing ban.

MTV3 analyst Erkki Mustakari speculated that, amid Ferrari's pre-season struggles with the uncompetitive new F2012 car, the team is deploying more than its full complement of test drivers in a panic bid to solve the problems.

"If it's an emergency then it may be time to try something very different," he said.

At the very least, Salo has sensed the importance of his new role, confirming he is "training like mad" to strengthen his neck and lose a few pounds. "This is not any old thing, but a two-day test," he revealed. (GMM)

Dat is ook mooi kut. Vrijdag finaal tegen de klippen van de hel op zuipen, zaterdag oppe tijd naar bels, 's avonds de hele nacht werken, zondags vroeg op voor de race te kijken en 's avonds weer de nacht in

Ik ga toch eens kijken of ik dat vrij kan regelen denk ik zomaar, dan hoef ik maar 2 dagen vrij te nemen.

“The engine noise,” he said, “might be more appealing than that of the current V8s.”

His argument is as follows: at the moment we hear two four-cylinder banks at 18,000rpm. The current engines have two separate exhaust tailpipes, one on each side of the car. This means that we are hearing 600 firings per second per bank of cylinders, which equates to 600Hz (cycles per second) of noise. The mathematics behind this is as follows: 18,000rpm equals 300 revolutions per second; as the engines are four-stroke the rpm must be divided by two, which means 150 revolutions per second, thus a bank of four cylinders creates 600 Hz of noise, which is heard in parallel to its twin bank.

The 2014 rules impose a single turbo, which means a single exhaust tailpipe. The engines will rev to a 15,000rpm, which equates to 750Hz of noise – (15000/60)/2 – which means that the frequency of noise will be 25 percent higher.
GP2 cars currently have a single tailpipe and despite revving to only 9,000 rpm, they sound as “screamy” as the current F1 cars.

The absolute noise level will be lower than 750 Hz because of the energy recovery systems and because of the maximum fuel flow rules, which may have some unusual effects. The rules state that maximum fuel flow allowed will be 100 Kg/hour and that this will come into play at 10,500rpm; so maximum engine speed should ideally be achieved at close to 10,500. In lower gears the engines may rev higher so that the gear changes will not drop the revs below 10,500, however the power will be constant over the rev range between 10,500 and 15,000 (decreasing slightly because of increasing friction), all of which means that the engines will be screaming differently to the current machinery.

“After a challenging few weeks for the team, we are pleased to have overcome the last hurdle of the final FIA-observed crash test, which we passed today,” said technical consultant Pat Symonds.

“The component in question actually passed an ‘unobserved’ crash test but has been performing inconsistently in the observed tests. The previous fail was only marginal so we needed to have a slightly more robust solution in place. A few minor adjustments to the original concept of the component was all that was required.

Geralt heeft het goed. 1.6 liter V6 turbo vanaf 2014.

En aangezien ik de jaren '80 met de turbomotoren heb meegemaakt juich ik het van harte toe.

Het zal wel niet zoveel pk als toen zijn (1300+ in kwalificatie), maar het zal meer pk's dan nu zijn. En het geluid zal ook niet verkeerd zijn. Misschien wel beter dan nu, volgens Joe Saward
