Status reactoren Fukushima I (zo 15:20uur, laatste wijzigingen onderstreept)
Verschillende reactorgebouwen hebben ernstige problemen met koeling. Dit heeft geleid tot brand, explosies en het plaatselijk vrijkomen van radioactieve stoffen. De straling op locatie lijkt te dalen. Op 30km afstand is ook hoge straling gemeten. Dit niveau is niet ongezond voor korte duur (uren tot dagen), maar wel als je er maandenlang in zou verblijven. Omwonenden zijn geëvacueerd. Er is een radioactieve besmetting gemeten in groente en melk uit het Fukushima-gebied. Hoewel de waarden nog niet schadelijke niveaus bereiken, zijn deze wel boven de wettelijke limiet, waardoor het niet verkocht mag worden. Omwonenden is gemeld zo weinig mogelijk drinkwater te drinken.
De Japanse overheid moedigt mensen die in een straal van twintig tot dertig kilometer rond de Fukushima kerncentrale wonen aan de regio vrijwillig te verlaten.
Unit 1: Vorige week zaterdag was hier de eerste explosie, door vrijgekomen waterstof die het dak heeft weggeblazen. De reactor wordt inmiddels niet meer gekoeld met zeewater maar met zoetwater. De eenheid is onder controle.
Unit 2: Dinsdag om 0:10 vond een explosie plaats rond de 'suppression chamber', een expansievat (plaatje). Hieruit kan radioactief stoom en water naar buiten lekken. De reactor wordt gekoeld met zeewater inmiddels ook gekoeld met zoetwater.
Unit 3: Hier is woensdagnacht veel straling vrijgekomen na een explosie. Deze reactor bevat deels plutonium, wat giftiger is dan uranium en moeilijker te beheersen. Er wordt inmiddels zoetwater in de reactor gepompt.
Drie werknemers waren gisteren aan het werk in het souterrain van het turbinegebouw van reactor 3. Ze stonden echter in 15 cm diep water te werken en hadden geen veiligheidslaarzen aan. Het radioactieve water liep daardoor in hun schoenen. Ze zijn opgenomen in een ziekenhuis. Twee van hen zijn blootgesteld aan een tienduizend keer hogere dosis radioactiviteit dan toegestaan. Dat bleek uit metingen, bericht het Japanse persbureau Kyodo.
De hoge stralingswaarden is volgens het nucleair agentschap van de Japanse regering afkomstig uit de kern van de reactor.
Unit 4: Hier heeft dinsdagnacht en woensdagnacht enkele keren brand gewoed. Deze reactor was niet in gebruik, maar er is wel gebruikte brandstof opgeslagen in een koelbad. De brandstofstaven liggen waarschijnlijk bloot aan de lucht en geven veel straling af. Het koelbad moet dringend gekoeld worden. Het is onmogelijk om dichtbij te komen, vanwege de grote hoeveelheden straling. Op vliegtuigbeelden was te zien dat er nog water in het koelbad is, dus unit 3 kreeg op zaterdag prioriteit bij het koelen. Men plant op zondag ook hier weer stroom aan te sluiten.
Unit 5 en 6: De reactors zijn weer aangesloten op netstroom en succesvol in 'cold shutdown' gebracht. De koelbaden zijn weer op gebruikelijke manier gekoeld.
Alle overige Japanes kerncentrales zijn normaal of uitgeschakeld.
Algemeen:
Om lekkage van radioactief materiaal te voorkomen, is het belangrijk dat de reactorvaten en de gebruikte brandstof goed gekoeld blijven. Het handmatig koelen is een bijna onmogelijke taak geworden, door de hoge straling op locatie. De tsunami heeft alle vaste koelsystemen onklaar gemaakt. Alle medewerkers behalve 50 man die direct bij de koeloperatie betrokken zijn, zijn geëvacueerd.
De bevolking in de 20km omgeving van de Daiichi-centrale (totaal 200.000 mensen) is geëvacueerd. Tot 30 km afstand moet men binnen blijven. Op 30km Noordwesten van de centrale is vrijdag een stralingsniveau gemeten dat niet direct schadelijk is maar wel als het lange tijd zo zou blijven.
Eén medewerker van Tepco is verongelukt tijdens de aardbeving, twee medewerkers zijn vermist na een latere explosie. Zeker één medewerker heeft een stralingsdosis van >100mSv opgelopen; twee politieagenten en een aantal brandweerlieden hebben een nog onbekende dosis gekregen.

Zoals ik eerder al schreef kun je extreem kleine hoeveelheden van zeldzame isotopen registreren door de exacte energie van het foton te meten (en daarvoor heb je dure meters nodig). Sommige elementen komen in de natuur (bijna) niet voor en dus weet je dat de herkomst een niet-natuurlijke oorzaak heeft. They found it at more than 12 locations, including school road.
Prof. Yamauchi from Kobe university measured 1,080,000 Bq/Kg of cesium. It’s assumed to be from reactor 3.

It includes high level of alpha nuclides.
This area was evacuating zone but Japanese government lifted the restriction last September, so citizens are still living including adults and children.

In Japan is de boel volgens mij al veel verder de grond ingezakt, ze kunnen 'n hoop Fuel niet eens meer lokaliseren.
Ze kunnen er nu al beton overheengooien maar dan komen ze er helemaal nooit meer bij en blijft de boel de zee/grondwater vervuilen. Bovndien zou dit suggereren dat ze de zaak niet meer onder controle hebben en zal Tepco en de Japanse overheid gezichtsverlies leiden. Geen paniek is en blijft het uitgangspunt. Net na de ramp was het ook niet mogelijk het water zou direct uit het beton verdampen, hou je poeder over. De droogkokende fuelpools konden ze ook niet bedekken omdat de boel dan in zou storten.

De licht radioactieve zeebodem voor de Japanse kerncentrale Fukushima wordt dichtgebetonneerd. Op die manier moet voorkomen worden dat zeestromingen de radioactiviteit verder verspreiden. Dat heeft energiebedrijf Tepco, de eigenaar van de kerncentrale, laten weten.
De betonnen plaat op de zeebodem wordt 60 centimeter dik en zal een oppervlakte beslaan van 73.000 vierkante meter.
Na de tsunami van maart 2011 kwam het in Fukushima tot een meltdown waardoor radioactief water lekte in de Grote Oceaan. (adha)

In the case of Chernobyl, it took 4 years till the cases of thyroid cancer started to appear. The doctor in Sapporo is shocked by the quick onset.
