Stemrecht is fundamenteel voor een democratie. Het willen beperken van inspraak van de ene groep door een andere kan bovendien prima via een democratie gebeuren.quote:

Je hebt helemaal gelijk hoor, maar het heeft gewoon weinig met democratie te maken. Meer met een debiele soort misogynie van religieuze extremisten. Dat soort lieden kunnen ooit nog eens mijn steun voor Israel ondermijnen. Voorlopig vertrouw ik op de wijsheid van de seculiere Israelis.

Ik denk dat je het artikel niet alleen te laat, maar ook slecht hebt gelezen. Anders zou je weten dat de discriminatie zich helemaal niet beperkt tot religieuze extremisten. De hele Israëlische overheid gedoogt dat vrouwen uit het openbare leven gedrukt worden.
En dat heeft alles met democratie te maken. Israël is hiermee domweg niet 'de enige democratie in Israël'.

We kunnen nu wel verzanden in een discussie over wat democratie is maar je weet al dat in een democratie het volk bepaalt. Het religieuze volk wil dit, dus op selecte plekken gebeurt het. Ook dat is democratie. Het zijn niet de waarden die jij en ik delen, dat is wat anders.quote:

In de verklaring die EU-ministers van Buitenlandse Zaken maandag overeenkwamen, staat alleen nog dat er in 2011 “verontrustende ontwikkelingen op de grond” waren, maar dat de EU onverminderd vasthoudt aan een tweestatenoplossing.
Volgens bronnen had Nederland ook die zin voorzichtiger geformuleerd willen hebben. “Dat is Rosenthal niet gelukt. Hij heeft dus niet in alle opzichten zijn zin gekregen.”
De minister zou het EU-rapport intern willen houden om het vredesproces niet te schaden. Nederland zou, gesteund door Italië, hebben gezegd dat het “nu niet het moment is om kritiek te hebben op Israël”.
Rosenthal wil niet inhoudelijk op de kwestie ingaan: “We hebben als ministers een keurige verklaring uitgegeven. De verhoudingen tussen en met mijn collega-ministers is als altijd voortreffelijk”. Rosenthal blokkeerde in september in de VN-mensenrechtenraad een gezamenlijk EU-standpunt dat te kritisch over Israël zou zijn. Duitsland, Groot-Brittannië en Frankrijk zouden zich hebben gestoord aan de Nederlandse bemoeienis van deze week.

The father of an Israeli soldier held in captivity for more than five years by Hamas has said he would kidnap Israeli soldiers if he were a Palestinian.
Noam Shalit, who announced earlier this year that he would be standing for the opposition Labour party in the next Israeli elections, has provoked outrage among the Israeli right with the comments. His son, Gilad, was released in a prisoner swap in October 2011.
Shalit added that the kidnapping of Israeli soldiers by Hamas militants was comparable to the techniques used by Israeli paramilitary fighters the Haganah against the British, arguing "we also kidnapped British soldiers when we were fighting for our freedom".
Speaking to a television interviewer in the kitchen of the Shalit family home, a familiar backdrop for the Israeli public from the family's five-year campaign for their son's release, Shalit was subject to repeated questioning attempting to pin him down on his political policies.
The former engineer eventually summarised his key campaign issues as "mutual responsibility. And not leaving soldiers behind or any Israeli who is in any trouble." He also said he would be prepared to negotiate with Hamas if he were an MP, something the Israeli government, along with Britain and the US, refuses to do.
"I am in favour of speaking to anyone who wants to talk to us," he said. When asked whether he would negotiate with a Hamas government headed by his son's kidnapper, he maintained: "If they change their ways and are willing to recognise Israel as a Jewish state, yes, I would shake his hand."
While acknowledging Binyamin Netanyahu's role in securing his son's release, he criticised the Israeli prime minister for not acting more swiftly. Shalit suggested economic sanctions should have been imposed on the Gaza Strip. "As soon as they capture an Israeli soldier and are not willing to release him and asking for such a price, you should put the pressure on them including stopping the transfer of money," he said.
Shalit went on to dismiss as "pathetic" the counter-argument that Netanyahu had "brought Gilad home", a decision that carried a significant political risk given the necessary release of thousands of Palestinian prisoners in exchange.
"Netanyahu saw that more than 70%, sometimes 80%, of the public wanted the deal [to release Gilad] and he realised the public would not accept another Ron Arad [missing Israeli pilot captured in Lebanon]," Shalit said.
An official from within the Israeli prime minister's office refused to give an official response to Shalit's comments but pointed to his recent emergence as a candidate for the opposition, recommending "his comments should be taken in that context".

Jewish settlers in the West Bank are conducting a systematic and expanding campaign of violence against Palestinian farmers, families and children with the Israeli authorities turning a blind eye, according to confidential reports from senior European Union officials.
In two reports to Brussels from EU heads of mission in Jerusalem and Ramallah, obtained by the Guardian, the officials found that settler violence against Palestinians has more than tripled in three years to total hundreds of incidents.
"Acts of settler violence are becoming a serious concern for the Israeli state which has so far failed to effectively protect the Palestinian population," says the report sent to EU ambassadors in Brussels last month.
The report notes 411 attacks by settlers last year resulting in Palestinian casualties and damage to property, against 132 attacks in 2009.
The campaign of intimidation is especially targeted at Palestinian farmers and their livelihood, the reports found, noting that settlers damaged or destroyed Palestinian olive groves en masse.
Around 10,000 trees were destroyed last year. But last autumn's olive harvest season was quieter than previous years.
The Israeli authorities are accused of structuring their security operations to minimise the cost to the settlers of the campaign of harassment, intimidation and violence.
"Over 90% of monitored complaints regarding settler violence filed by Palestinians with the Israeli police in recent years have been closed without indictment," the February report says.
A previous and more detailed analysis from April last year described the increasing settler violence as "an alarming phenomenon".
"Discriminatory protections and privileges for settlers compound these abuses and create an environment in which settlers can act with apparent impunity."
The Israeli authorities' failure to resolve 92% of 600 reported incidents by April last year effectively encouraged the settlers to step up the violence, the report argued, adding that the perception had been created that "settler violence enjoys the tacit support of the state of Israel".
The manner in which the Israelis organise security operations in the West Bank militates against the Palestinians enjoying protection.
Children are stoned going to school and Palestinian shepherds and farmers are common targets for violence.
For more than 300,000 Jewish settlers in more than 200 locations in the West Bank, the Israeli military is obliged to intervene if there is retaliatory Palestinian violence. The army, though, is relatively powerless to halt violence against Palestinians since this is the remit of the Israeli police.
"Arguably the single most important deficiency in the provision of an impartial rule of law is the difference in the level of protection afforded to settlers and Palestinians," the report says.
The EU officials say that, according to Israeli security sources, the campaign of violence is being masterminded by around 100 militant settler leaders, and they point to the potential electoral liability for any Israeli government that seeks to get to grips with the violence.
"In Israeli terms, there is a negative political consequence to cracking down on settler violence and no political gain from protecting violence."
Apart from deploring the violence and demanding explanations from the Israeli authorities, the EU officials propose scant other action to halt the campaign.
They suggest to their superiors in Brussels that settler leaders urging violence against Palestinians be blacklisted by the EU and barred from travelling in the union.

A U.N. media official is under fire after tweeting a graphic image of an injured child and attributing it to recent Israeli air strikes on Gaza. While the photo, at first glance, certainly offers up a tragic sense of what war costs the men, women and children who live through it, the image is apparently years old and had nothing to do with Israeli actions.
But before we get into the gritty details, here is the controversial photo:
Khulood Badawi, who Honest Reporting says works as an Information and Media Coordinator for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, is responsible for sending the photo out on Twitter. In a message disparaging to Israel, she wrote, “Palestine is bleeding. Another child killed by #Israel. Another father carrying his child to a grave in #Gaza.”
Here’s the problem: The photo is apparently from 2006 and has no relation whatsoever to Israel (or violence for that matter). While it was sent on March 10, the tweet is still present on Badawi’s account and has been shared by many other users, including activist and filmmaker Diana Alzeer.
On Monday, Honest Reporting wrote that the photo, “…was proven to have originated in 2006 and to have had nothing at all to do with Israeli action. This photo is now the top tweet for #Gaza, with over 300 retweets. It is completely false.”
A man named Avi Mayer initially tracked the image and found that it, at the least, goes back to 2009 and seems to be attached to tragedy that unfolded in Iraq (here are the search results showing where the image popped up). Honest Reporting continues:
