Introduction

It has been more than four years since this reading guide was last updated. Those familiar with earlier versions of “The Officer’s Professional Reading Guide” will notice that this one is much abridged. Many officers found the earlier list, which at its peak numbered well over 300 books and topped 80 pages in length, difficult to use. In revising this guide, it was our intent to create a concise list that would provide officers with the best one or two books on a given subject rather than an exhaustive bibliography. Those leading books would then serve as gateways to that subject.
With that in mind, this “Top 100 List” is broken down into six sub-categories: The Military Classics; Military Institutions and the Nature and Practice of War; The Face of Battle; History of American Wars; A History of Wars and Warfare; and finally Literary Works on War and Warfare. Some of these sub-lists represent true top ten or fifteen lists. Others list the top one or two books on a particular subject or period. The reader should think of these lists as introductions to various subjects of historical and professional study. For those interested in more comprehensive bibliographies on specific military subjects, I direct you to the bibliographies from the West Point Summer Seminar in Military History posted on the Department of History’s website.
It is hoped that this guide will continue to serve the dual purposes of encouraging officers to persist in their professional education and in providing a resource for those in the field to consult when developing their own reading programs. Of course, the study of history will not provide us with a blueprint for the future. Whatever good may be made of this reading guide should be attributed to the input furnished by Professor Waddell, Colonel Greg Daddis, and the other faculty of the Department of History.

Smith, R: The Utility of Force Kilcullen, D: The Accidental Guerrilla: Fighting Small Wars in the Midst of a Big One Ledwidge, F: Losing Small Wars: British Military Failure in Iraq and Afghanistan Allemaal recente boeken die gericht zijn op doctrines m.b.t. irregulier optreden. Ook zal je bij krijgswetenschappen doodgegooid worden met Von Clausewitz e.d. Wat iedereen die de Gemeenschappelijke Officiersopleiding (GOO) doet tegenwoordig wel krijgt om te lezen is de Inleiding Krijgswetenschappen (Mengelberg, S.N. ; Jong, M.A.G. de ; Munnik, A. de), maar dat is een leerboek. 	Even een schopje geven, ik heb namelijk wat boekenbonnen gekregen voor mijn verjaardag laatst. Iemand nog aanraders voor boeken over oorlogsvoering, -strategie en -tactiek? The Art of War, Vom Kriege en The Transformation of War staan al op mijn lijstje. Vooral boeken van de studierichting Militaire Krijgswetenschappen lijken me enorm interessant.

	The Art Of War is op zich een heel interessant boek, maar het heeft het heel erg over algemeenheden, in dat opzicht is het meer een staatsmannenboek dan een boek voor militairen. The Utility Of Force is veel actueler. En is, vind ik, verplichte kost voor officieren. The Art Of War is leuk voor erbij, mijn suggestie is retebelangrijk. Nog andere goede suggesties zijn The Accidental Guerilla, Learning To Eat Soup With A Knife, Wired For War, Thunder Run, One Bullet Away, Generation Kill en An Ordinary Soldier,

	Het is niet cryptisch, het is gewoon heel erg algemeen. Er valt niets aan uit te leggen, omdat het op zo'n beetje alles toepasbaar is, en juist daarom eigenlijk zeer nutteloos.

	Vorige week "De evolutie van de Oorlog" van van Creveld gelezen. Heel interessant, maar je wordt doodgegooid met feiten en cijfers. Elke zin is een statement(Letterlijk) Het boek:" On The Psychology Of Military Incompetence " http://www.amazon.co.uk/P(...)imlico/dp/0712658890 ...heb ik laatst uit gelezen. Ook puur genieten. We kennen allemaal wel pro- en antidefensie argumenten maar dit boek gaat er op zo'n academische en harde manier op in wat niet te ontkennen valt. Erg van genoten. Het laat ook veel voorbeelden zien over bijvoorbeld Operation Market Garden waarom dat zo keihard gefaald is ook al waren de Amerikanen in de meerderheid ect.ect. Dus het beeld wat je krijgt van de TV word in dat boek even keihard ontkracht. Echt een aanrader

	The Bear went over the Mountain, Soviet Combat Tactics in Afghanistan. Goed boek om eens in de tactische keuken van de Soviets te kijken in de tijd van de Afghanistan oorlog. Het staat vol met waargebeurde scenario's en hoe ze dat aangepakt hebben. Na een stuk gelezen te hebben kom je er achter dat die Russen echt niet zo dom waren en niet alleen maar stompzinnig voorwaarts konden gaan. Is als PDF te downloaden. For those interested in more comprehensive bibliographies on specific military subjects, I direct you to the bibliographies from the West Point Summer Seminar in Military History posted on the Department of History’s website. It is hoped that this guide will continue to serve the dual purposes of encouraging officers to persist in their professional education and in providing a resource for those in the field to consult when developing their own reading programs. Of course, the study of history will not provide us with a blueprint for the future.
