The BAFTA-award winning competition for professional chefs returns to BBC Two in
November for its fourth series. Across the six-week series the professional chefs are
tested, challenged and pushed to the edge of their culinary limits, in the hunt for the
next gastronomic superstar.
Legendary double Michelin-starred chef Michel Roux Jr and MasterChef judge,
Gregg Wallace are joined once again by Michel’s trusted Sous Chef and notorious
perfectionist, Monica Galetti. Together they search for the chef who has the skills,
commitment, palate and style to make it one day to Michelin standard.
Forty chefs compete in the heat stages, which run over the first four weeks. In each
heat week ten chefs must face two daunting tests set by Monica in a nail-biting
elimination round to determine who will go on to cook for renowned chef Michel. The
first challenge they face is the infamous Invention Test, but this year the contestants
are given just SIX ingredients and 50 minutes to make a show-stopping dish of their
choice.
Next the ten are spilt into two groups of five to face the dreaded Skills Test where
they have just ten minutes to impress Monica and Gregg with their abilities. Monica
demonstrates to viewers at home the correct methods, however contestants don’t
get to see her top tips and together with Gregg, she decides which one will be sent
home.
The remaining four chefs must then face two gruelling tests set by Chef Michel. This
year they must perfectly recreate two classic dishes to Michelin star level in The
Classic Recipe Test. Firstly they must cook one of Michel’s classics, which Michel
demonstrates to viewers at home. Then in their final chance to impress, the four
have just one hour to cook their own choice of classic dish to the highest standard.
Michel and Gregg decide which chef hasn’t made the grade leaving three chefs from
each group to go through to the Quarter Final.
Every week the Quarter Final sees the six best chefs from the heats face another
Invention Test. They must prepare an exceptional dish from scratch and at the end
two more chefs will leave.
The four remaining contestants must then face the scrutiny of the tough restaurant
critics’ panel to prove they are worthy of a semi-final place. The chefs have one hour
and fifteen minutes to create a two-course menu that will impress Charles Campion,
Jay Rayner and Tracey Mcleod, William Sitwell or Andy Hayler. Just two of them will
make it through to the semi-finals in week five of the series.
Week five is the SEMI FINAL week and it starts with the best eight chefs preparing
one incredible dish to fight for their MasterChef life. At the end two more chefs must
go home, leaving just six to fight on for the title.
The three remaining shows in Semi Final week see these six contestants competing
in pairs, battling it out head-to-head for a place in the finals. Firstly each pair are sent
to one of Britain’s most famous Michelin starred restaurants, to cook a busy lunch
service under the Head Chef and then recreate their Michelin-starred signature dish
for judgement by the chef himself.
Finally they must prepare two perfect dishes for Michel and Gregg and only the best
chefs will make it through to the FINAL week.
It’s an extraordinary FINAL week. For their first challenge, the finalists face
another Invention Test, but this time they must cook at a level that has never been
demanded before in the MasterChef kitchen.
Next the finalists are sent on a culinary experience of a lifetime into the kitchens of
the number two restaurant in the world - Spain’s El Celler de Can Roca. Granted
rare access to the genius Roca brothers, the finalists are not only given a master
class, they then have to prepare dishes inspired by the food of Head Chef Joan and
his brother, Pastry Chef Jordi, all to be judged by the great chefs themselves. Then
in what is the most terrifying task ever, the finalist are then given control of the El
Celler de Can Roca kitchens to run service on their own.
The penultimate show sees the last three remaining chefs face the toughest
challenge of their career – The Chef’s Table - preparing a three-course menu for
thirty of the world’s leading Michelin chefs with 40 Michelin stars between them,
inspectors and invited guests, including Monica Galetti, at Pearl in London.
Then, there is one final cook-off at the MasterChef Kitchen to decide who will be this
year’s champion. They must cook the best three courses of their lives for one final
judgement from Michel and Gregg. Only one of them can win the title of Professional
MasterChef 2011.
