The intensity of earthquakes recorded on the smallest of the Canary Islands, El Hierro, has increased slightly during the last 24 hours. However, the total number of earthquakes recorded daily has lessened since the earthquake swarm initially began on 17 July.

The total number of tremors recorded during the past two weeks has now exceeded 1,050, according to the Instituto Geografico Nacional (IGN).

The majority of the earth tremors ranged between 1-2 magnitude, but during the past 24 hours there have been least five tremors measuring in excess of 2.0 magnitude on the Richter Scale. A 2.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded at 4:56 p.m. local time on Sunday (31 July 2011).

Approximately 50 earth tremors were recorded on Sunday, according to local earthquake monitoring agency Actualidad Volcánica de Canarias (AVCAN). The number is slightly down on the number of tremors recorded on Saturday and significantly less than the 195 earthquakes recorded on 22 July.
Earthquake-El-Hierro1.jpg
Recorded tremors last days

quote:
The vast majority of the tremors have been recorded in the northwest of the 278.5-square-kilometre island at El Golfo, the location of a massive landslide that created a 100-metre high tsunami almost 50,000 years ago.

The earthquake swarm, prompted the Canary Islands Government to convene the first ever meeting on 22 July of the Steering Committee and Volcanic Monitoring, reflected in the Specific Plan Protection Civil and Emergency for Volcanic Risk, given what it described “the significant increase in seismic activity”. The Committee met again on Friday 29 July to discuss the low magnitude seismic activity. It reported that it had stepped up its seismic monitoring operations to identify the source of the earthquakes.

Following an evaluation of seismic and volcanological information gathered by the IGN and volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands, the Committee agreed to activate “monitoring and surveillance mechanisms necessary to coordinate the actions of civilian self-protection and information to people listed in the Plan” (translated from Spanish press release). It remains unclear, however, if the unprecedented seismic activitiy on El Hierro is a precursor to a possible future increase in earthquake or volcanic activity.

Earthquake swarms are events where a local area experiences sequences of many earthquakes striking in a relatively short period of time. The length of time used to define the swarm itself varies, but the United States Geological Survey (USGS) points out that an event may last for days, weeks, or months.

El Hierro’s Volcanic/Seismic Past

El Hierro is situated in the most southwestern extreme of the Canaries. The island was formed after three successive eruptions, and consequent accumulations, the island emerged from the ocean as an imposing triangular pyramid crowned by a volcano more than 2,000 metres high.

The volcanic activity, principally at the convergence of the three ridges, resulted in the continual expansion of the island. A mere 50,000 years ago, as a result of seismic tremors which produced massive landslides, a giant piece of the island cracked off, crashed down into the ocean and scattered along the seabed. This landslide of more than 300km3 gave rise to the impressive amphitheatre of the El Golfo valley and at the same time caused a tsunami that most likely rose over 100 metres high and probably reached as far as the American coast.

Latest update on El Hierro
From the harmonic tremor data during the current eruption in El Hierro. It seems that the eruption has dropped in strength during the past 48 hours or so. But that most likely means that the current eruption crater is closing up. But this does not mean that the eruption is over, as new fissures might open up without any warning close the El Hierro Island or on the island it self. It is impossible to know that for sure at this moment. As it currently stands it is unlikely that a new Island is going to form offshore of El Hierro island, as the current eruption crater does not seem to have the energy to break the surface of the ocean. Earthquake activity in El Hierro volcano remains about the same as it has since the eruption did start on 10 October, 2011.

For the moment, the only thing that can be done is to wait and see what happens next. But it is clear that the eruption in El Hierro is far from over from the data that I have seen so far. But this eruption might pause for days to weeks, as that is not uncommon thing for a volcano to do during a active eruption cycle.

De activiteit is sterk afgenomen - dit kan een voorteken zijn van een pauze moment voor de vulkaan zodat deze weer kan opbouwen voor een volgende eruptie (of toch weer tot echte rust komen)

Update 19/10 – 15:47 UTC:
In our prior 13:54 UTC update we mentioned 4 earthquakes since midnight. The total has increased to 7 in about 2 hours time. The 3 additional earthquakes had values of 1.8, and 2 times 1.5. Another important element to notice is that we noticed today 2 shallower earthquakes, respectively 7.9 and 9.6 km deep. This did not happen anymore since October 10.
The initial shallow quakes started on October 9 and ended on October 10 and were often only a few 100 meter deep, typical for volcanic earthquakes.
Harmonic tremors were almost constant all day long.
To conclude, we are far away from the October 9 / 10 conditions, but earthquakes are not over yet.

Scientists confirm that the seismic process is losing momentum

The researcher of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), Joan Martí, and responsible for Monitoring Volcanic National Geographic Institute (IGN), Carmen Lopez, have confirmed that the submarine eruption of El Hierro has expelled magma, which is still going abroad because samples of basalt "typical" in the Canary Islands that have been collected.

But noted that the magma "is coming out," Lopez said the tremor signal has been reduced progressively and that the deformations are stable, so it noted that the seismic process is losing strength.
Marti said that the eruption was not "too large" and dismissed the idea that an explosion soon, because the first phase tends to end, so that "we are returning to normal." In a second phase, said it was not until within weeks or months.
For this reason they will stay ahead of the equipment and scientific instrumentation on the island, which is higher than it had at the beginning of the volcanic crisis, "he said." Although the researcher found that the risk to the population has not been great so far, acknowledged that "caution is always short."
He recalled that from July to October were recorded on the island more than 10,000 earthquakes due to magma movement at first, adds, had a horizontal path, only to be vertical, reaching the surface. For scientists the peak was the bubbling was observed recently in the sea surface.
For Martí "things have been done right the first time" because it detected the "minimal changes" of the situation and "has occurred that was predicted."

El Hierro Volcano about to end 'eruptive phase'

CSIC Scientists monitoring the volcanic eruptions on El Hierro, together with the National Geographic Institute (IGN), confirmed earlier this morning that the 'eruptive phase' of the volcano is now decreasing. However, this is not to say that the activity as a whole has come to an end as it is likely that the volcanic activity may move towards a further phase.

Scientists also confirmed that tremors on land associated with the volcanic activity had also subsided considerablly over the past few days.

Ground deformations, drinking water samples and lava samples are still being analyzed.
Carmen Lopez, for the IGN confirmed "What had been assumed from the outset is that it was an eruption of basaltic magma which reached a depth of 11 or 12 miles and has been moving for more than three months until it found a place to rise to surface, which is what it has now done."

The Volcanologist said how the submarine eruption began at 1,000 meters below sea level and had been moving north at a depth of just 200 meters, which is why the effects were seen on the surface.

Lopez stressed the importance of waiting for all current activity to cease before declaring that the eruptive process was about to enter a new phase as it wasn't unheard of for the same activity to re-start after a short break.

The scientists on the island are continuing to monitor the volcano, but believe that any threat to the population is "low".

El Hierro - update 6
Little seems to have changed in the eruption of El Hierro since my last update on it. That was on 19 October, 2011. Harmonic tremor is constant, but appears to have dropped a little in the past few days. But with the fluctuation that is often increases again before it drops down again. This means that the eruption is ongoing, but is loosing power to continue at current eruption vent. This was not unexpected. This has however not slowed down inflation in El Hierro from what I can gather on GPS data on El Hierro.

As the current eruption vents close down it seems that earthquakes have started again under El Hierro. But the earthquakes have the depth from 28 km and up to around 5 km. This strongly suggests that new magma is entering under El Hierro and is again increasing the pressure inside the El Hierro magma sill (or chamber, but note that El Hierro does not have a stable magma chamber it seems). This increases earthquakes while the magma does not have any good path up to the surface. When a new path for the magma starts to form again, a large earthquake swarm is going to take place in El Hierro. It is not going to be anything bigger then already has taken place in El Hierro already. With the largest earthquakes going up to Mb5.0 in size. That is at least my opinion.

The major risk in the current eruption cycle of El Hierro is the risk that new eruption vent is going to open up nearby a human population without warning. But El Hierro has a lot of cinder cones from earlier eruption cycles. That creates the risk that a new eruption vent is going to open up on dry land without warning. But it is impossible to know when and where that might happen.

Claims that this eruption in El Hierro is going to create tsunami due to landslides are false and have no basic in fact or reality. As landslides are unlikely to happen in this eruption episode or if a eruption happens on dry land.

Update 21/10 – 10:03 UTC:
The acid rich green seawater has reached the western part of the island (Frontera side). This is really bad news for the people living there as the experience of La Restinga learned us that a lot of fish did not survive these waters. Hopefully the acidity will have been diluted a bit since the last 24 to 48 hours.

Update 21/10 – 09:42 UTC :
overview of the last 10 hours:
- harmonic tremors activity similar than yesterday.
- after the updates of the IGN data we noticed 22 volcanic earthquakes yesterday. The focal depth was in between 11 to 26 km.
- since midnight UTC today, 6 volcanic earthquakes have been recorded by IGN. Focal depth in between 11.8 and 22.3 km.
- we are mentioning these earthquake parameters because they are of high importance to predict eventual activity. If earthquakes are getting more powerful the risk on landslides increases (like people of Frontera experienced) and if they are getting shallower (in between 0 and 5 km) magma may have found a way up the seabed / island (higher degree of alert can be expected soon).
- Joke Volta reports that the calm has returned to El Pinar as there is no longer spectacular news to report on. The tunnel is open again (at least partly) and the Los Restinga people can return to their houses today. Only the (great!) local Canary Island press will continue to make headlines from the El Hierro news.
- The people at El Hierro are divided into 2 camps : the believers and the non-believers. The believers do think that the worst will be over as they do not feel earthquakes anymore (the earthquakes are still occurring even more than before but just below the Feel level) and as the politicians have told that the volcano is looking for his bed (read : become dormant again). The non-believers do not trust the politicians and they are thinking that they still hide something. If it is all over, why is the Red Alert still there ?

El Hierro Coast to be Declared Area of Special Protection

The las Calmas area off the South-West coast of the Island of el Hierro, is to be designated an area of special Protection (SPA) by Ministerial order, after being affected by pollution from the stain created by the volcanic eruption over the last week.

SPA's are regarded as being under the protection of the crown, and intended to promote the conservation of migratory bird species, according to the draft that is available to the public by the Ministry of Environment, Rural and Marine Affairs .

The news SPA in the las Calmas area may not have affected the birds that nest on the ground, as they will look for food in deeper waters and not close to the coast, which is where the majority of the pollution has drifted, according to Antonio Lorenzo, from Tenerife SEO / BirdLife .
The ministerial order to comply with Law 42/2007 for Natural Heritage and Biodiversity . And the identification of SPA's comes "from an intense scientific work and earlier research." However, further research may result in new areas designated for the smae protection.

The new SPA will join the marine Natura 2000 network in Spain, a European system of biodiversity conservation.

El Hierro : The Conspiracy Theories Keep Coming

It has become an impossibility to keep count of all of the activity in the recent earthquake swarm on the island of El Hierro, with latest estimates place the tally somewhere around 10'800 since activity first began back in July.

Indeed, the media's focus seems to have shifted from the frequency and intensity of the seismic activity going on underneath the island - which is still happening - to the progression of the eruptive phases of the underwater volcano, which, if what Scientists are telling us is to be believed, seems to be on the wane.

One thing, however, that does seem to be on the increase is the amount of conspiracy theories being floated on a number of forums and social networks on the web.
Accusations are abound of scientists and politicians deliberately manipulating analytical data in order not to panic the residents of the island in light of a further enormous Earthquake / Volcano / Tsunami / Elvis landing on the Island on a UFO (* delete as appropriate).

Perhaps the most popular conspiracy theory doing the rounds is that of the entire eastern seaboard of the USA being just hours away from disaster with a massive earthquake / Volcanic eruption causing a 300 ft tidal wave. Although the theory is not a new one by any means, with its likelihood being documented on the BBC Horizon program in the 1990's, there were 2 key points that need to be considered before our friends across the pond go in search of higher ground :

1. The documentary discussed the probability of an event that was though to have happened some 50'000 years ago, when an enormous landslide fell away from the North side of the island of El Hierro, accusing a Tsunami that has been widely thought to have been responsible for the creating of the Florida Everglades. Comparing the Island's Geology of 50'000 years ago to today seems obsolete.

2. The Documentary predicted what would happen in the event of the Caldera de Tabauriente, on the neighbouring Island of la Palma suffering a similar fate. Whilst it is generally agreed that any similar activity would cause an enormous landslide resulting in a 'Super-tsunami', which would be expected to cause the worst natural disaster that history has ever recorded, it needs to be remembered that A) La Palma is not El Hierro, and that B) There have been no confirmed reports of seismic activity on La Palma.

If you have 5 Minutes to spare, have a look at our favourite scaremongering conspiracy theory on Youtube (above).

Whilst being particularly fond of style guru Prof Simon Day, Tumbit blames the Illuminati.

Update 22/10 – 07:58 UTC – Overview of the last 14 hours
- The Ramon Margelef, the oceanographic ship with the ROV aboard has been detected in Tenerife this morning by one of our readers. We expect that the ship will extend his crew with scientists and load additional fuel and equipment to set sail for El Hierro later today.
- The number of volcanic earthquakes has been rising since the Sea Jacuzzi stopped working. Yesterday IGN recorded a total of 31 earthquakes varying in depth from 25.7 km to 10.6 km. Magnitudes reached a max. of 2.6.
The first 8 hours of today (the list is not complete as of yet) we noticed 13 earthquakes (max. 2.3). It looks like we are heading to the pre-eruptive state
- Volcano followers are suggesting that IGN and/or CSIC to call in IMO Iceland volcanologist(s), who are highly specialized in this kind of eruptions. If the El Hierro volcano would erupt, the chance that it will be a Surtseyan eruption is high. Surtsey was one of the first well monitored volcano build islands which rose out of the ocean from 1963 to 1967.
- 20 people of La Restinga have chosen to stay in the Student home of Valverde because they do not trust the situation in La Restinga
- Diving companies have made some dives yesterday in the northern part of the island. We hope that the water is continuously tested on Ph degree because the water currents are driving the green stain to other parts of the island.
- 2 restaurants have reopened their doors in La Restinga. Tomorrow the supermarket will reopen too. It will be the first time in a long period that they will not be able to sell fish from the local fisherman.
- people are depressed in seeing the dead fish floating on the water. They fear that one of the main income streams for the local people, the Sea, will be shut down for an unterminated period. Some said if the volcano would have grown above the water, we would have attracted a lot of tourists now we are left with nothing and an eco-disaster on top.
- people in the street continue to have lively discussions about the truth of the eruption. As nothing can be seen with their own eyes, they have to choose for one of the many different opinions of politicians and scientists on what is happening.

Update 22/10 – 08:46 UTC: - We have noticed a sudden change in frequency since about an hour. Click here to see what we try to explain. The yellow and red colored zones have changed. We do not know the reason yet, but some (probably minor) change is going on below the volcano (but very deep and without danger to the population or their belongings). Similar changes have occurred during the recent days, mostly resulting in less activity soon after.

Further earthquakes and volcanic activity returns to El Hierro

The volcanic activity on the island of El Hierro has shown new signs of activity this morning, with bubbles on the surface of the ocean changing in colour.

Last night scientists also recorded around 50 new earthquakes between 24 and 16 miles deep, and with a magnitude of between 2 and 2.6 on the richter scale.

Bubbles have returned to the surface of the Las Calmas bay after appearing to decrease on Friday, with a change to their colour which may indicate a different phase in the eruptive activity. The Security General Directorate has decided that the Emergency and Rescue Group have made a number of inspection flights over the island, but are yet to make any official statement to confrm their opinion.
Earlier thsi morning the Ramon Margalef research ship from the Spanish Institute of Oceanography arrived at the island in order to take samples from the Las Calmas area and to analyse changes in the underwater volcanic activity.

Whilst the residents of the town of El Hierro are anxious that an further evacuatuion may be forced upon them, Scientists report that changes such as reported ar quite normal and to be expected in activity such as this.

New magma intrusion into El Hierro volcano, Canary Islands, Spain
Few days ago a new magma intrusion did start in El Hierro volcano, Canary Islands, Spain. But this means that the pressure is increasing inside El Hierro current magma still. The new magma is going the same path as before, and is forming a new sill north-west part of El Hierro volcano. It seems that this magma has not yet encountered the magma that is already inside El Hierro volcano. What happens when the new magma encounters the slightly older magma is a open question. But I am sure what happens is going to be interesting and is going to create a new eruption vent in my opinion.

The new magma intrusion in El Hierro. It is not yet in contact with the existing magma in El Hierro. It is hard to know exactly what happens when the new magma gets into contact with the magma that is already in El Hierro. Copyright of this picture belongs to Instituto Geográfico Nacional.

What is really interesting about this new magma is that this seems to be a new intrusion from a new conduct below El Hierro. This conduct does not appear in the earthquakes that started in July 2011 to today. There is a great risk that more new conducts are going to open up under El Hierro in this same manner. But this means that new magma can start to flow into El Hierro at new point under El Hierro. But that is always marked by a increase in earthquake activity where a new magma intrusion starts in El Hierro. This new magma intrusion into El Hierro appears to be rather small at the moment. But it is most likely going to grow over the next few weeks.

VALVERDE (EL HIERRO), 25 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

A team of scientists from the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO), public research body under the Ministry of Science and Innovation, has been located and mapped the outbreaks of the eruption of underwater volcano in El Hierro during the scientific mission from the past 23 October, being developed in the area on board the ship Ramon Margalef.

The scientific team, led by Juan Acosta and Francisco Sanchez, has located a newly created volcano cone-shaped, with a base diameter of 700 meters, a height of 100 meters and a crater about 120 meters wide. The base of the crater is located 300 meters deep. Also, using higher frequency echosounders has been possible to locate the columns of gases and fluids emitted by the volcano and other emission points (cracks).

The authors emphasize that the finding is the first to be achieved in these conditions throughout the world, has been investigated since the volcano and associated volcanic activity in the optimal timing of eruptive activity on the merits. This early localization and characterization of volcanic phenomenon will study the temporal evolution of these phenomena and facilitate the interpretation and understanding of volcanic phenomena on the islands.

SHIP FIRST SCIENTIFIC MISSION

Ramon Margalef The ship departed from Vigo on Tuesday October 18 en route to Tenerife, where he arrived on Saturday. On Sunday morning finally came to El Hierro. The Ramon Margalef, until a few weeks ago still in the testing phase, accelerated its set-up to lead this scientific mission, which involves its release. Its aim is to study volcanic activity in the area and its consequences in the seabed of the Canary Islands and in its ecosystem.

The ship is carrying a remote monitoring underwater vehicle called Liropus, able to observe and ecosystems sample up to 2,000 meters deep.

The oceanographic campaign in which these discoveries have been made in collaboration with the Canary Islands Oceanic Platform (Plocan) and the Canarian Agency for Research, Innovation and Information Society (ACIISI), under support of the Scientific Committee Pevolca.

A milky green plume in the water stretches 25-30 kilometers at its widest and perhaps 100 kilometers long, from a large mass near the coast to thin tendrils as it spread outs to the southwest. Scientists now move to El Golfo because of the turbidity of the water in La Restinga
Thursday, October 27, 2011 7:55 acnpress

The research vessel of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) Ramón Margalef, Francisco Sanchez, announced the launch, on Thursday, the second phase of research will focus on imaging the coastal area of El Hierro. However, Sanchez said that due to the turbidity of the water in the area of La Restinga will begin by the area of El Golfo and will continue in the current zone of the eruption when the process is restored.

The new data from the scientific campaign being carried out, since last October 23, the Ramon Margalef, on the submarine eruption of El Hierro, will do a better prognosis for the development of submarine eruption, as the member said Wednesday Scientific Committee for Civil Protection Plan for Volcanic Risk Islands (Pevolca), Joan Martí.
Researcher at the Center for Scientific Research (CSIC) and member of the Scientific Committee Pevolca, Joan Martí, the data provided by Ramon Margalef scientific campaign have confirmed that this is a fissure eruption that is located at the intersection of failure with the crack, at a depth of 200 meters, and can "emit about 40 million cubic meters of magma and even something more."
According to Martí's current data and seismic tremor level and above those provided by the scientific campaign, support the conclusion that there is a very low probability of occurrence of an eruption on the ground.

Scientists detect that there is magma beneath El Hierro

The research vessel 'Ramon Margalef' plunge the two robots to take the first real images of cone 100 meters in the sea of las Calmas

CMM Researcher National Geographic Institute (IGN) Joan Martí said yesterday that have proven "very clearly" that magma remains under El Hierro 20 to 25 meters deep and said that the eruption is still ongoing. The researcher was speaking at a press conference within the research vessel Ramón Margalef, robots that immerses today Liropus 2000 and a photogrammetric sled to take the first real images of the eruptive fissure and cone height of 100 meters in Las Calmas.

Marti said that the eruption began in the north and the magma traveled 12 kilometers beneath the island he found out south of La Restinga. The expert noted that "the gas outlet and the seismic signal indicates that the eruption continues," and virtually ruled out a similar eruption in Frontera, where earthquakes are occurring in the last hours, but "continue to monitor." IGN investigator considered "surprising" that the volcano is behaving like a subaerial eruption, despite being underwater.

The two robots that will try today take pictures and videos of the volcano El Hierro from the vessel Ramón Margalef. This was announced by Juan Acosta, a researcher at the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO). Apparently, the turbidity of the water over the mouth of the eruption, the exit of materials, will be difficult to obtain these first real images of the cone, so that scientists plan to begin in El Golfo and gradually get closer the main focus.

The Ministry of Science and Innovation released on Tuesday showed a cartographic approach, in addition to the eruptive fissure, a cone-ups, 100 meters high, with a mouth width of 120 meters, 300 meters deep. "Drawing on the bathymetry (depth map) of this area, conducted in 1998, the Navy Hydrographic Institute and the IEO, we see that in this area I had before was a valley, a valley, where there is now a cone height of 100 meters, "said Acosta.

Joan Martí recommended a new bathymetry within a time to check for changes in morphology of the building. "These structures are very unstable, as they grow, collapse, and will be watched to see what state they are," he said.

Francisco Sanchez of the IEO, added that it is fortunate to have reached a stage where the eruption is not "excessively violent" because it allowed them to pass "just above" the mouth and make the corresponding measurements.

Without oxygen

Joan Martí also revealed that the dead fish may have suffered a shock as it has been found that in the area of the spot had "zero oxygen", which is called anoxia.

El Hierro : Volcano cone has 12 Mln Cu Mt capacity

Scientists from the oceanographic research vessel 'Ramon Margalef' have completed their mapping of the seabed surrounding the volcanic eruption on El Hierro, and are prpearing to deploy their research submarine to relay images of the fissure to the surface for further analysis.

The underwater cone, which was discovered on Monday, has an estimated capacity of 12 Million cubic meters and could produce a volume of 40 Million Cubic Meters of magma, and with a flow of lava over several Km with a volume of 2 Million Cubic Meters - a significant amount given that the eruption only began on the 9th Oct.

The new cone lies some 300 meters below the surface and has a base diameter of 700 meters, a height of 100 meters and with a crater width of about 120 meters. The lava becomes solid once it comes into contact with the cool seawater, forming a crust on the surface, but remaining liquid inside, and moving slowly across the seabed until the inside of the trail eventually cools and solidifies.
The role of the reserach scientists on the surface is to gather the information and relay it to the PEVOLCA commitee and the National Geograhic Institite (IGN).

Further analysis will follow in 3 phases : the remotely operated submarine will take high resolution images of the eruption; a Sled will be used to take further images from different altitudes and angles; and finally, the water / gas colum eminating from the eruption will be analysed. The results of which are expected to be known by early next week.

Hello

Although I have no university degree, i have been educated in the field in 1965 by the great Haroun Tazieff, I started to carry his bag and all I learned was coming from Haroun. I am following volcanoes for more then 45 years and I am now in El Hierro … and I am following day by day the evolution of the seismicity of the volcano island
Earthquake-Report.com wrote earlier:

“Most people in El Hierro were happy to hear that the new crater was finally found and appear to be too happy with the birth of new baby”
But what are they talking about ! … this crater has been around for decades and it is located 3/4 miles south-south-west of La Restinga and rises from a depth of more or less -370 meter. I have given the location of this crater already in an article i wrote on 28/09/2011.

The new crater is located 2 km from the south-west coast of El Hierro at a depth of 150 meters … the water temperature is above 60°C and the Ramon Margalef can unfortunately NOT use his ROV in water at temperatures above 30°C (risk of destruction or important damage) …

The volcano presented by the Ramon Margalef is not the new volcano. The other parts of the picture are not showing signs of an recent eruption … In addition, the new vent culminates at a very shallow depth of 70 m. Contrary to what a lot of people and scientists are telling i have to stress that the Jacuzzi is still working. Also small geysers, stage 2 of an eruption surtseyenne, are appearing …

I am here on the island and i can see this from my viewing point …

Finally, from a volcanic point of view, it is normal that the earthquakes are shifting towards El Julan and El Golfo. Depth close to 20 km, they show that the magma is travelling towards the eruptive vent / fissure … the GPS data and seismograms are in constant evolution n and the ground at El Golfo, El Julan and in the Sea of Las calmas …

A surtseyenne type eruption : What risks to El Hierro?

In addition to the volcanic tremor perpetuates an underwater eruption since 10 October 2011 to 04 17 pm Universal Time, the Instituto Nacional Geográfico - IGN - recorded from October 17 A 01 H 29 Universal Time on October 18, 2011 57 to 00 h Universal Time, 8 new seismic events in the Sea of Las Calma - including 5 in the basal zone eruption in the south-west of La Restinga, and 3 in the West - with a magnitude between 1.5 mbLg and 2.5 and hypocenter ranging between 12 and 30 km focal depth, off the coast of South-East of the island-volcano El Hierro.

h-20-2616936-1318936699.jpg

On October 17, 2011, following three earthquakes of magnitude greater than 2.0 mbLg:
- The first 07 to 07 h Universal Time, latitude and longitude 27.6873 ° N 18.0374 ° W, 13 km deep hypocenter, magnitude mbLg 2.1;
- The second 55 to 12 h Universal Time, latitude and longitude 27.6645 ° N 18.0448 °, west 16 km deep hypocenter, magnitude mbLg 2.5;
- The third 12 to 18 h Universal Time, latitude and longitude 27.6629 ° N 18.0758 ° W, 18 km deep hypocenter, magnitude mbLg 2.2;
the spectrogram, a major significant change in the volcanic tremor and, consequently, in the eruptive process, has suddenly packed 12 to 19 hours Universal Time.

h-20-2616937-1318936735.jpg
h-20-2616938-1318936751.jpg
h-20-2616940-1318936775.jpg

Two theories can be made:
- A new eruptive vent opened, within the perimeter defined by five seismic hazard cited above, between 150 and 300 meters deep, on the northwest flank of the volcano underwater peaked at 4 / 5 km southwest of La Restinga to -370 meters;
- The volcanic cone of the vent had appeared off the coast of Puerto Naos, 150 meters deep, is close to the ocean level.

In the first case, clear signs, in a few hours, will confirm or deny. But if a new fissure has really opened the first signs that indicate, will be on the one hand, a gradual decrease of volcanic tremor accompanied by a deflation of the ground - no doubt, then, that some scientists interpret it, not as the opening of a new vent, but the underwater volcanic eruption gradually draws to a close, unless a temporary lull, it was nevertheless not be excluded if périclitent volcanic swarms - and, secondly, the gradual disappearance of the hot spot and the resurgence of progressive giant bubbles become less frequent over time.

In the second, the vent was opened to very shallow - 150 meters - the magma flows, pillow lavas forming, it could be no doubt that the volcanic edifice is being built near reaching the surface. Since October 16, giant gas bubbles occur every 15 minutes, overlooking the eruption site. These were the beginnings of a hot spot visible from Puerto Naos and Punta de la Restinga. And high boiling points out that the top part of the new building is sub-flush and the appearance of a plume cyprissoîde, surtseyenne herald an eruption could be imminent.

What risks as part of an eruption surtseyenne?

Surtseyenne type eruption is a type of volcanic eruption that occurs in shallow seas or lakes within 100 meters. It was observed for the first time, Capelinhos, the Azores, from 1957 to 1958, but the emergence of Surtsey, south of Iceland between 1963 and 1967, which gave it its name. These eruptions are eruptions hydromagmatic interacting with violent explosions, more violent than if they occurred on land, caused by andesitic or basaltic magma at a temperature of 1200 ° C, in contact with the shallow water environment or surface water, frequently less than 20 ° C. Water expands and turns into steam, and in contact with the magma, its expansion releases energy that quenches and shatters. It explodes and creates plumes of ash, steam and slag.

h-20-2616942-1318936805.jpg

The explosive expansion of steam occurs near the surface in an open vent where water pressures and temperatures are relatively low, and where energy can be dispersed during eruptions of variable intensity , repeated at intervals of several minutes that can last many months. Explosions superficial provoquenr collapse of walls at the top of the vent pipe and developing a funnel-shaped

The activity builds hydromagmatic téphraïques surfaces of several square kilometers in the first few months. When the sea water can no longer reach the eruptive vent and lava, the eruption becomes Hawaiian or Strombolian type. The explosions and offshore create plumes of ash and steam that rise to over 4 / 5 kilometers, or 8 to 10 km altitude, and clouds of several hundred meters high of tephra. It results in the formation of tuff rings and pyroclastic cones.

While the surtseyennes eruption generate spectacular explosions that are much less dangerous than leaving to assume their appearance. The coasts of the Atlantic Ocean recellent many cones surtseyens such as Monte Brasil in Terceira, and Monte Guia, Faial, Azores, El Golfo, Lanzarote, and Taco, in Tenerife, Canary Islands ...

El Hierro update : Sat 29th October

Seismic activity on the Island of El Hierro intensified yesterday, with a total of 63 earthquakes being recorded by the National Geographic Institute (IGN), with an average depth of 20km and magnitudes of up to 3.3 on the richter scale, off the North-West coast of the Island.

Of the 63 quakes, 4 were recorded above 3.0, 27 between 2.0 and 3.0 with the remainder being below 2.0.

Over the past week dozens of similar quakes have been recorded in the same area - the opposite side of the Island to where the volcanoi eruption is being observed off the coast of La Restinga.
So far today the IGN has recorded 32 earthquakes, mainly around the El Golfo area, with the largest one being recorded this morning with a 3.3 magnitude.

The movements could indicate a likely change in magma flows deep underground, but scientists are still unable to say if this will result in a change of eruptive phase to the existing underwater volcano, or if a further eruption may occur.

Thel Ramon Margalef Oceanographic research ship is continuing to monitor the situation and has surveyed the underwater eruption off the south coast of the island tocheck for any changes in activity. A new Volcanic crater was discovered earlier this week 300mt below the surface measuring some 100mt high, with a cone diameter of 700mt and a crater width of 120mt. Geologists estimate that it has a cubic capacity of 12 Million Meters and could potentially produce as much as 40 Million cubic meters of magma.

Underwater lave flows have now reached 7km - the magma solidifies on the outside as it comes into contact with the cold seawater, but remains liquid and continues to flow at it's core.

Important Update 30/10 – 07:53 UTC
- Based on all what follows Earthquake-Report.com predicts that PEVOLCA will meet very soon. Main reason : The increasing strength of the earthquakes.
- The strongest earthquake since October 8 (a M 4.4 quake at the time), now a Magnitude 3.9 quake, occurred at 07:46 this morning in the El Golfo bay. Its epicenter was close to the Frontera coast line. The 4.4 earthquake on October 8 was the start of a number of events like the beginning of harmonic tremor and the start of the green stain (eruption) soon after. The depth is still a secure 22 km. Some scientists are linking however the magma area below the El Golfo to the still continuing eruption to the south of La Restinga. These are however speculations who cannot be proofed.
- At earthquake-report.com we do not consider quakes up to Magnitude 5 as dangerous for houses, although indirect damage can be triggered by rockfall and landslides in mountainous areas like El Hierro. Authorities will certainly follow up the El Hierro landscape scars when the quakes get again to Magnitudes 4 to 5. This will be a major concern for the El Hierro authorities from now on.
- Harmonic tremor remains the same as during recent days. This may change fundamentally if the quakes continue and are getting more powerful.
- Since midnight UTC IGN listed 11 earthquakes and only 2 of them were lower then 2! The last 3 quakes had values of 3.2, 3.9 and 3.0.
- Authorities have closed the Los Roquillos tunnel out of fear of Rockfall for the 3 to 4 magnitude quakes in the beginning of the month and have reopened him last week due to the pressure of the population. Will authorities close the tunnel again ? We do not think that they will take such a decision very soon as technicians have improved some parts of the tunnel. The concern among scientists and PEVOLCA must grow though.
- Joke reported yesterday that the Frontera population reacted completely different to the earthquakes than the El Pinar and La Restinga people. More indifferently and certainly not as alerted as them.
- Those people wanting to follow the discussions among specialized volcano amateur followers can click on this link. We can warmly advise it. A lot of scenarios are being discussed.

The current tremor data now suggests that a new vent or vents have opened or are about to open up just outside north-west coast of El Hierro volcano. The depth where the main earthquakes have been taking place is about 100 to 300 meters (but might be more). So far the largest earthquakes to take place in this area was a ML3.9 with the depth of 22 km. What is important in this is not the fact that the earthquakes are at great depth. But also the fact that a more shallow might not take place. As that was not the case when the eruption started in El Hierro on 10 October, 2011. It is unlikely that there is going to be any shallow earthquake activity before a new eruption vents opens up. As that was not the case on the 10 October, 2011 from what I can remember.

I am not sure how strong earthquake this area can make. But I am guessing that it might well be in the upper Mb5.5+ range. The earthquakes that are now taking place are due to magma injection. Not a tectonic one. There is a difference between the two. But this rifting in El Hierro might trigger a earthquake close to El Hierro Island in near future, that earthquake would be a tectonic one. Not a earthquake created by magma movements.

So far the new vents are still unconfirmed. But there are signs in the harmonic tremor data that new eruption vents might be opening up or have already opened up. But at this moment I am waiting for a confirmation on this actually taking place. That is going to take a few hours, given the experience so far.
Er is idd wat aan het handje daaro in El Hierro. Dussss......wachten op bevestiging.

October 30, 2011 – CANARY ISLANDS – The National Geographic Institute has confirmed this morning at the direction of the Civil Protection Plan for Volcanic Risk (Pevolca) a magnitude 3.9 earthquake struck northwest of Frontera, located in the sea at a depth of 22 miles deep. The earthquake was followed by a 3.2 magnitude aftershock which struck at a depth of 19 km. The quake, which was felt by the population, occurred at 07.46 hours and is the largest earthquake recorded in the island after the onset of the eruption south of La Restinga. The Emergency Coordination Center and Security (CECOES) received 1-1-2 calls from the towns of Isora, Guarazoca, Mocanal (Valverde) and Tigaday (Border).

The evolution of seismicity in the north of the island has increased in recent days and scientists, who are monitoring constantly all possible scenarios, still cannot ascertain what this new activity means. In this sense, they are inclined to believe that this new activity could be producing a seamount. Moreover, those responsible for the IGN have confirmed that yesterday, 62 earthquakes were reported along this region with two of them being felt by the population. The earthquake of greatest magnitude in yesterday’s swarm reached a magnitude of 3.6 on the Richter scale.

This movement has been located at sea in the Gulf area about 4 miles from the coast at a depth of 23 kilometers. It has been felt by the population with maximum intensity IV in the town of Valverde. The depths vary between 15 km and 25 km. In total, since the day July 17, 2011, the island of El Hierro has been shaken by more than 10, 615 earthquakes. According to reports from scientists at the University of Cadiz, and with reference to the deformation of the ground, this continues in two separate scenarios. The south of the island shows a remission in increasing deformation, clearly marked by the eruption process and that is evident in the data recorded in the GPS station of La Restinga. However, in the north of the island, there is an increased component of deformation component to the North and the East. (Bron

PEVOLVCA Scientists on El Hierro call meeting for this morning

The PEVOLCA Committee on the Island of El Hierro is meeting again this morning to review the current situation on the Island following an increase in seismic activity over the weekend, and to evaluate the information, which has sometimes been conflicting. The Committee took the decision not to take any action yesterday, but instead to wait for a more revue of analysis and meeting today.

The total count of seismic activities is difficult to keep accurate due to their frequencies, however, yesterday there were 93 recorded earthquakes, with a further 41 already being recorded before 09.00 Hrs GMT this morning.

In addition to the frequency of activity, the intensity appears to growing with 2 quakes measuring greater than 2.0 on the richter scale alone this morning.
Doubts have once again been raised about the safety of the Los Roquillos tunnel, which could hinder any attempts to evacuate the residents of the El Golfo area to the main town of Valverde to the North-East of the Island.

More news is expected later in the days once the details discussed in the meeting have been released.

Second eruption imminent

Scientists analysing seismic activity on the Island of El Hierro have warned how a second volcanic eruption could be on the point of happening.

Even though scientists last week spoke of signs of the first eruption off the south coast of the island, decreasing in activity early last week. seismic activity off the opposite coast of the Island led to fears that the eruprion may simply be about to enter a new phase. Over 150 earthquakes were recorded over the course of this weekend around the areas of Frontera and El Golfo, reaching as high as 3.0 on the richter scale.

It is thought that this activity could signal that the magma is now trying to break through to the surface on the opposite side of the island.
No changes to the state of alert have been made - the Island as a whole remains on Yellow alert, with the town of La Restinga, close to the Volcanic eruption on the south coast, remaining on red alert. It has also been rumoured that the El Golfo area may also be moved up to red alert, and the Los Roquillos tunnel closed if earthquakes continue.

A senior Volcanologist, Nemesio Perez, explained to Spain's national broadcaster RTVE "What we do know is that there is activity with magma and this chapter has still not been closed," he said.

The PEVOLCA spokeswoman, Ana Vidal, confirmed the news and referred to the activity as being "great and accelerating."

Although it is a couple of days old now, this Youtube clip shows a good graphical demonstration of what may be happening or about to happen >>

The PEVOLCA committee met this morning to discuss the events of this weekend, but it was found that there is insufficient data to predict what will happen in the coming days, weeks or months.

A professor argues that Barcelona "has underestimated" the Explosive material

The pyroclastic found in waters of La Restinga provide "clear evidence" of an explosive "big" so far "not mentioned publicly by anyone." This is to a report, prepared by Professor of Petrology and Geochemistry, University of Barcelona, Sunday Gimeno, who believes that "it has underestimated the explosive material."

According to The El Hierro Journal contains, the material analyzed,''does not present the characteristics of a surtseyano like eruption, "which is, according to this expert defends the scenario" repeatedly proposed by the scientific monitoring committee.''
In his view, since the surface began to appear in the pyroclasts, the commission "should be understood that it was explosive submarine eruption and a different kind" and that if, moreover, implied magma mixing was "potentially much more dangerous rhyolitic magma involved and if, further, "Gimeno said. Therefore, in its report argues that the pyroclastics," can, and should be analyzed in a matter of hours "for what is being asked the reason for many days "still did not know what they are."
The study of pyroclastic, by the doctor at the request of the City of El Pinar, indicates that magma mixing different compositions is a phenomenon widely reported in the literature as "increasing the explosiveness of magma and, in many cases as a trigger for an explosion, "he explains. Therefore, for this professor of the University of Barcelona, have been mapped throughout a volcanic hypothesis surtseyano" trivializing its potential explosiveness. "
In fact, after Chemical analysis of the material found in the area, notes that, once classified by the TAS diagram (Total-alkali versus silica) of the International Union of Geosciences (IUGS), which is the internationally accepted usage The black product is a basic rock (basanite) and White, a differentiated product (alkaline rhyolite).
The first product was already known in other samples from the island of El Hierro from previous eruptions, while the second is "comparable but not identical, to what is known in other eruptions are less frequent in El Hierro (slightly richer silica), "in the report.
The expert would be advisable to perform a systematic sampling and characterization of pyroclasts that are being expelled by the volcano, as the compositional characteristics and the degree of crystallinity can vary during the eruption and "the evolution of this condition, so this task is useful in the face of crisis management, "he advises.
Also, the professor says in his report that the determination of chemism, which is what can be explained by natural phenomena in accordance with the laws of chemistry, and the degree of crystallinity of the rocks formed during an eruption, "should be done as soon as possible in the course of this, as both factors definitely affect the explosive and therefore the associated volcanic hazard."
Although, according to this expert advocates, many of the Spanish public universities and different centers of the Center for Scientific Research (CSIC) have equipment and technical staff "well qualified", in his opinion, "can not understand how this characterization not carried out since the first time by the commission or commissioning scientific monitoring of the eruption, "he concludes.

Overview update 03/11 09:07 UTC :
A further climb in harmonic tremor since a number of minutes. The frequency of the tremor has hardly changed since many days. A sharp change in frequency (the colors in the lower part of the graph) will probably coincide with a new event (not necessarily a new vent).

Overview update 03/11 08:47UTC :
In an attempt to give a better view on what we are describing about harmonic tremor in many updates below, we have assembled the data of the last 3 days.
** FYI Wikipedia description of Harmonic tremor : Harmonic tremor describes a long-duration release of seismic energy, with distinct spectral (harmonic) lines, that often precedes or accompanies a volcanic eruption. More generally, a volcanic tremor is a sustained signal that may or may not possess these harmonic spectral features.
A harmonic tremor is a sustained release of seismic and/or infrasonic energy typically associated with the underground movement of magma and/or venting of volcanic gases from magma. Being a long-duration continuous signal from a temporally extended source, a volcanic tremor contrasts distinctly with transient sources of seismic radiation, such as tremors that are typically associated with earthquake and explosion.**

elhierro-03112011-2a.jpg

Overview update 03/11 08:12UTC :
- Pevolca has announced yesterday evening that based on yesterdays data, they could not conclude that an eruption is imminent.
- Increasing harmonic tremor and a turbulent seismogram are contradicting the words of Pevolca. The IGN scientists at Pevolca have however a lot more data than published on the IGN website. (see below)
- Some of the more experienced amateur volcano followers ( Iceland volcanoes) @ jonfr.com have other opinions, although they admit that not having all the data is a problem to have a truly good view on the situation. The discussions go often very deep and tend to become very technical.
- One of the problems for scientists is that the past Surtseynian eruptions like the ones that happened in Iceland and in the Azores, are not as documented as eruptions are today, which make comparisons rather difficult.
- Earthquake-report.com wants to thank the many readers who are writing us with tips, local contact persons, etc. This help is not only appreciated but essential to verify upcoming events.
- IGN has listed 19 earthquakes since midnight, the strongest one being a 2.7 to the West of Frontera. The depth varies in between 12 km and 22.10 km. Nothing special one would say, but harmonic tremor is indicating constant magma stress below the volcano.

And the story continues:
CHIE_2011-11-03_09-10_sp.jpg

#ElHierro The pyroclastic at #LaRestinga consist of basalt and trachyte #Canarias #viveelhierro

quote:
The pyroclastic de La Restinga are composed of basalt and trachyte with no chemical reaction

CSIC representatives as part of the scientific committee of the Civil Protection Plan for Volcanic Risk (PEVOLCA) have moved into the direction of the Plan, the preliminary results on the first pyroclastic thrown to the surface of the Sea of calms. The fragments are formed by a magma mixing between two materials, one black (basalt) and one white (trachyte), which occurred at the time of the eruption so it is a physical mixture between the two materials without the two chemical reaction has occurred.

In this regard it is noteworthy that these trachytes are volumetrically insignificant and constitute more than an anecdote that the main feature of the eruption. In reality the samples have been collected along these days, the trachyte was only present in the first few episodes as a ratio of 1 to 10 with respect to the basalt, which does not involved in determining the type of resulting eruption.
Its origin may be due to a Remobilization (reflow) of a small remnant of material from the basalt trachyte again on his way to the surface. These processes are not so rare in this type of volcanism occur in a short time (a few hours to few days).
These results, although they had already been advanced, had not been made public because it had not yet completed the series of tests to do in this type of study, and not relevant to consider that the presence of magma mixing as driver dynamics of the eruption.
It should be noted that studies have been published in the media today during a concern is for staff responsible for its production and not a formal request from the City of El Pinar, as he said.
To avoid confusion arising from contradictory information, especially the residents of El Hierro, the direction of PEVOLCA stresses the importance of following the official statements that leads to the population. To this end and for those scientific and research institutions wishing to participate in the study of eruptive phenomenon, the Canary Islands government has created a Scientific Steering Committee, to achieve effective coordination and discussion of research in order to a better guidance to bodies responsible for Civil Protection.
PROCEDURES
From the first moment CSIC members took charge of the pyroclastic sampling and its analysis following the usual procedure in these cases, ie the samples sent to different laboratories to compare results and to have a spectrum the broadest possible range of data. Some of the samples were sent to Madrid (MNCN, CSIC), Barcelona (ICTJA, CSIC) and the University of Huelva, where they are doing experimental petrology studies to determine the thermodynamic characteristics of eruptive magmas. In addition, samples have also been sent to Washington State University, in the United States and of Clermont Ferrand, France, for isotopic analysis.
Basalt and trachytes
Basalt is the most common magma eruptions of El Hierro, has a 43 percent SiO 2, reaches a temperature of 1,200 ° C and a density of 2700 kg/m3.
The trachyte is a magma with a SiO2 content of 63%, reaches a temperature of 850 ° C and a density of 2,300 kg/m3. The trachyte is not the predominant magma erupted, therefore does not contribute to increase the explosiveness of it.
Both the basaltic material as the trachyte samples are highly vesicular, which means that both had a high amount of gas in the time of eruption, which would explain why it is explosive (pyroclastic formation) despite the sea water pressure on the mouth of issue. However, this type of explosive is normal within the parameters of basaltic eruptions with which we move and no additional hazard is of the fact also contain trachytic magma.

Raymond Matabosch, The French volcano follower (see separate article) told us that he will spend the night in a tent at the El Julan heights, which have a great view on the Las Calmas sea. Raymond is convinced that, if the current harmonic tremor /seismic activity continues, a Surtseyan eruption will occur within the next few hours or days, and he does not want to miss such an event.
- 96 species of fish have been affected by the eruption. There are no signs of any marine life within a radius of 1.5 km from the eruptive mouth. In an extended radius of 3 miles, there is almost no marine life perceivable until a depth of 200 meter. Below 700 meter depth and further than 1.5 mile from the eruption vent, marine life is not affected anymore. The results have been reported by Marine professor Alberto Brito from the University of La Laguna, Canary Islands.
- The people responsible for the webcam at El Golfo (LasPuntas.es) (the one directed to the mountains) have reacted on our request to change direction in El Golfo and to install another one towards the Las Calmas sea. New spots have appeared in the South.

Het noorden lijkt dus nog rustig. Bevingen zitten daar wel. maar de tremors lijken dus van het zuiden te komen.

quote:

According to the latest PEVOLCA statement: "The scientific committee spokesman Civil Protection Plan for Volcanic Risk (Pevolca), Carmen Lopez, said that Border seismic events, which have intensified in recent days ... correspond to the stage of La Restinga underwater eruption, which began on 10 October.

Lopez noted that the high seismicity that has occurred with magnitudes of 4.3 and 4.4. has affected the feedback mechanism of the process magmatic eruption of La Restinga, "generating a process of 'rectified diffusion', an injection of magma pressure in the emission rate increases and releases large amount of gas."

This phenomenon is what has been represented in discrete pulses of tremor and new spots appeared on the surface of the Mer de las Calmas, which turn white, brown along the pyroclastic material, precisely because of the presence of gases .

However, scientists do not completely rule out that another seismic "smaller and smaller scale" that is occurring at 15 kilometers deep in Earth's crust in the area of El Golfo, could result in a submarine eruption, but not imminently. "

However, in this interview with a scientist aboard the Margalef said that there are cracks in El Golfo and is observed on the rocky bottom sediments new generation of them. Full saying there's a new fracture and is out some material in suspension.

------------------
In the graph of the evolution of seismic energy by half every 6 hours and a half deep, you can see the evolution before the eruption of the first swarm to the eruption, then the system is no longer representative to start with disperse seismicity and volcanic system reactivated with this second swarm holding at the same depth from day 20 to 22 October when the intrusion began, staying between 20 and 22 km, with some forays to shallower areas about 17 km, but the latter must increase days the area of activity is unstable and fluctuates more.

In principle one might think that we need more activity in the northern shallow ahead of a possible eruption, although tremor signal so that small earthquakes are not detected, may not see ... although I think there will be shallow earthquakes before the possible eruption of the northern zone (Enrique).
-----------------------------
In the graph of evolution of the depths of the earthquakes from October 1, you can see the activity of the pine forest before and after the eruption. You can also see how the second swarm activity centered in the Gulf was concentrated until five days in two horizontal zones or sills between 19 and 23 km and a shallower between 16 and 17 km, taken as the last days are merging as one area, indicating that whatever is coming up from below, but has not yet come up. - the light green stains are far bigger than seen previously as dark green stains on the Guardia Civil pictures (the dark green stains on the RapidEye pictures are shadows of the clouds).
- the grey muddy eruption vent activity was not seen anymore on October 31 (Raymond looks to be wrong here as he stated that the venting continued all the way)
- that the current to the right of La Restinga blocks the stain from being spreading to La Estaca
- a big mystery is the coloring in the El Golfo bay. was this coloring created by the sea currents or by new activity
- the dark green patches can also be seen in the El Golfo area (see comment about colors above)!

Border seismic events are the scene of the submarine eruption of La Restinga

The direction of PEVOLCA remember that there is risk to the public but all civil protection resources are activated

Frontera seismic events, which have intensified in recent days, corresponding to the scene of the submarine eruption of La Restinga, which began on 10 October.

This has been reported Carmen Lopez, spokesman for the scientific committee of the Civil Protection Plan for Volcanic Risk (PEVOLCA) after the meeting of the Steering Committee.

This phenomenon is what has been represented in discrete pulses of tremor and new spots appeared on the surface of the Sea Calm, which turn white, brown along the pyroclastic material, precisely because of the presence of gases .

However, scientists do not completely rule out that another seismic "smaller and smaller scale" that is occurring at 15 kilometers deep in Earth's crust in the area of the Gulf, could result in a submarine eruption, but not imminently.

This eruption would be similar to the South, but given much more depth of ocean floor bathymetry in the area. In any case, it would be necessary to give other values that "at this time do not exist." Note that in this day the ground deformation has stabilized in the North, which had experienced some acceleration in recent days and is significantly relaxed in the south. To this is added the decrease of the seismicity and the stabilization of the tremor signal. Lopez wanted to point out that historically, in the Canaries, "no two eruptions have occurred simultaneously."

Despite the alarming situation has created this situation for the population, the Director General of Security and Emergency of the Canary Islands, Juan Manuel Santana, stressed "the eruption of the South no risk for the population" and insisted that Scientists are monitoring for 24 hours, at the slightest variation of the current trend "must preactivated all civil protection resources."

El Hierro May Have New Volcanic Vent

PEVOLVA and the National Geographic Institute (IGN) have announced how El Hierro has recorded a total of 24 Earthquakes since midnight and 11.00 hrs CET this morning, averaging around 3.0 on the richer scale.

The highest was measured off the North-West of the Island at 3.2 less than 1 hours ago, with the remainder measuring from 1.9 to 3.0, with ten of the quakes measuring over 2.5.

The depths of the activities were around 22km.
Observers have noted the high number of earthquakes with a stronger magnitude and expect that this will continue throughout Friday.

Meanwhile, to the south of the island and off the coast of La Restinga, Scientists have noted a change in the colour of the stain and bubble formations rising to the surface as a result of the volcanic eruption, and are looking into the possibility of a further vent now becoming active.

A helicopter is currently flying above the eruption zone in order to gather further information for analysis.

"Hopefully they do not disprove the volcano with a large explosive eruption," the Catalan researcher, who told this newspaper that, contrary to what CSIC scientists argue, "most of the rhyolite pyroclastics are volumetrically" that is, one of the most explosive magmatic material existence.

Of course, if someone has had access to the volcano's pyroclastic at mar de Las Calmas, these have been the CSIC volcanologists Joan Martí and Ramon Ortiz, who have been integrated into the Pevolca from the beginning. On Wednesday, Gimeno gave the bell with his explosive conclusions. In his report was clear that the City of El Pinar which requested the chemical analysis of samples was done for free, "because it is a sample collected in the context of national emergency", and the University of Barcelona is a public body.

It also describes all the techniques that were used to obtain the data and the time elapsed since the arrival of materials, October 27, until they could make findings, only two days later. The question that the scientist is why, if so immediate analysis, the public did Pevolca their data until Wednesday, coinciding for his appearance in the media.

The fact that the analyzed material containing rhyolite gives a special explosive power, which has been consistently dismissed by experts Pevolca. But that is not all. "The presence of pyroclastic material in the differential is significant, regardless of the genetic interpretation to be given, provides clear indications of a much larger explosive potential, so far not publicly mentioned by anyone, as we have been monitoring the news in press, radio and national television, "says petrologist in the report. He continued: "The inhomogeneous mixing of different magma compositions is a phenomenon widely reported in the literature as increasing the explosiveness of a magma, and on many occasions as a trigger for an eruption."

The point is that, at all times, there has been talk of an eruption surtseyana, quiet apart from the time the magma hits the surface, when a column of steam, followed a few hours, an ash , the famous rooster comb, which has given much play. Well, not always according to Gimeno. "The test material does not exhibit the characteristics of a surtseyano like rash, which is the stage repeatedly proposed by the scientific monitoring committee, at least for more than a week in the first phase of the eruption," he says.

Professor at the University of Barcelona can not escape to devote the final paragraph of his report to the manner in which the crisis is being managed El Hierro. "We must make the effort to attract talent, first local and national environment closer, prioritizing the description and understanding of personal hypotheses or small groups. Since it is also obvious, urgent works are used public funds and is played with the safety of persons and property ".

From AVCAN propose, if it seems appropriate that we discuss what questions they would like to ask members if they had that opportunity PEVOLCA. Perhaps that helps for some of the people attending. The submarine volcano has returned to La Restinga expel pirclastos smoldering this morning to the sea surface, as confirmed by sources on a daily face Hierro. There are many residents who have contacted this newspaper to inform us of the smoke observed sea surface.

For its part, the scientific committee spokesman Civil Protection Plan for Volcanic Risk (Pevolca), Carmen Lopez, said yesterday that seismic phenomena Frontera, which have intensified in recent days, correspond to the scene of underwater eruption La Restinga, which began on 10 October.

This phenomenon is what has been represented in discrete pulses of tremor and new spots appeared on the surface of mer de las Calmas, which turn white, brown along the pyroclastic material, precisely because of the presence of gases .

The tremor of the Restinga in the south is increasing in amplitude from this morning to saturate the sensor signal, but still fails to completely saturate the sensor as it did in early October. The seismicity in El Golfo north indicates that the volcanic system is pressurized, the 3.8 of a while ago, is a mark that will continue until the seismicity depressurize or lose strength.

In principle it shows activity in the mer Las Calmas, fissure type, but not a big mouth is defined to allow a drop of clear tremor, so I think it will continue opening mouths, and increasing the road , is still closer to the coast, so there will be very aware if a mouth opened near the coast and / or land to be very alert to official information they can get on the evolution of the phenomenon (Enrique)

The opening of the tunnel in the morning was expected to surveillance and security measures.

It has also carried out the eviction of the 11 houses of the points that were more likely to be affected by landslides.
These preventive measures are discussed in separate morning meetings of the scientific committee and steering committee to assess maintenance or making other decisions that may be necessary depending on the situation.

The Emergency Coordination Center and Security (CECOES) 1-1-2, under the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Security of the Canary Islands, received between 20:37 and 21:28 yesterday evening, 45 calls by inhabitants of the three municipalities of El Hierro and related to the earthquake that occurred this evening on the coast of the island
Also in that same time slot, the CECOES attended some calls from the municipalities of Arafa and Santiago del Teide, both located in the south of Tenerife, and Valle Gran Rey in La Gomera.
The most important incidents connected with this phenomenon have been associated with some detachments located in the heart of Sabina and in the area of Guinea, without consequences.
In this sense, IGN has confirmed to the direction of Pevolca that there was an earthquake of magnitude 4.4, the western border, with a depth of 21 kilometers.

The volcano of El Hierro loose slag by several craters

Researchers aboard the research vessel 'Ramon Margalef' studying whether it has opened a new mouth in the north of the island after finding "new generation materials" and gas leaks in El Golfo.

The volcano has been living for three weeks with the residents of El Hierro is more awake than ever. So much so that in their eagerness to be noticed has opened several mouths to keep throwing the slag as it is called the material released in the Atlantic with an eruption.

A helicopter ride over mer de las Calmas allowed scientists to monitor the evolution of the volcano certify the existence of a string of craters could be three open in a straight line quite well defined. A row of gas bubbling and steaming pyroclastic would correspond with the fracture of the crust, more open than ever, which Hierro volcano unleashes its power.

By releasing tensions that crack, the technicians of the National Geographic Institute (IGN) observed a "significant" decrease in the number of earthquakes that shook the north of the island because of the volcanic magma bustle output below El Hierrro.

Thus, only 39 earthquakes recorded IGN on Thursday a sense by the public and the press time numbered only 26 in the day yesterday, on an island used to half a hundred earthquakes a day. Of course, a magnitude 3.8 earthquake with an epicenter located just five miles from Frontera represented the only shock to the northern population, while in the south watching the bubbling volcano, closer than ever to La Restinga.

The question of a crack in the north
To these concerns was added a doubt, the possibility that a small crack had opened in el Golfo, against Frontera, suggested by the current head of the research vessel campaign Ramon Margalef, Eugenio Freire. Apparently, last Thursday observed some release of materials at those seabed, but the ship had to return to port of Los Cristianos on Tenerife Island to refuel and take on board new teams of researchers.

Yesterday, the Ramon Margalef returned to the waters of El Hierro to verify this impression, which officials said could not be confirmed. Freire had claimed that "there are sediments new generation" on the ocean floor: "There are some cracks and some stuff is coming," said lead researcher of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) was quoted by Antena 3 Canarias. Freire is the third campaign chief scientist Ramon Margalef eruption on the phenomenon of El Hierro, whose mission is to analyze the physico-chemical state of the waters. The vessel's presence will help clarify the situation, as when doubts arose about whether he had in front of La Restinga eruption at first.

The head of the first campaign, the IEO researcher Juan Acosta, who was in charge of studying in detail the geology of the seabed islanders, last week also noted an anomaly in these soils, "small gas leaks very fine" that could be of "volcanic or biological." He described the terrain in that area contains an old scar the result of an underwater landslide.

Yesterday, the priority of the authorities was to the south, La Restinga, where they held a meeting with residents on Thursday after some of them leave their homes in fear. The scientific spokesman of the crisis committee, María José Blanco, said that there is a single eruption in progress, but fissure type being the material always comes out the same place. In addition, the researcher explained that the volcano IGN maintains an "irregular emission rate" marked by seismicity that occurs in the north of the island.

Renewed Eruptions at El Hierro in the Canary Islands

Hierro_bubbles.jpg

Trying to keep up with the news at El Hierro in the Canary Islands is hard the seismicity and tremor has been almost nonstop for 6 months now and over the last few weeks, the submarine eruptions have waxed and waned but now we seem to have entered another period of strong submarine activity (see above), which might possibly be closer to the ocean surface.

UPDATE 3:15 EDT: It looks like the phreatomagmatic explosive activity is beginning south of El Hierro. Prensa El Hierro tweeted (translated): Juan Manuel Santana have just announced that produce water columns and ash. La Restinga is being evacuated as a precaution. Some new video/images of the area shows small explosive plumes/jets from the ocean surface that suggest the eruption is enterting a Surtseyan phase. The team of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO, public research body under the Ministry of Science and Innovation), which develops from the Oct. 23 on a scientific mission on board Iron Ramon Margalef, has been compared in images before and after the appearance of the underwater volcano in the south of the Canary Island.

Comparing the 1998 image, taken from the Oceanographic Research vessel Hesperides, with this week by the Ramon Margalef, current studies allow us to interpret the submarine valley as the trace of a fault or fissure, at the end of which it is produced rash and creation of the new volcano.

Moreover, scientists have obtained the first video recreation of the crater of a volcano. The volcano has a base diameter of 700 meters, a height of 100 meters and a crater about 120 meters wide. The base of the crater is located 300 meters deep.

The image shows a topography module compiled from data obtained in 1998 with the Oceanographic Research Vessel Hesperides in the area of El Hierro, in the Program "Spanish Exclusive Economic Zone" that led the Navy Hydrographic Institute (MMI) Defense Ministry and the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) under the Ministry of Science and Innovation. This image reveals how much was raised from the seabed before the onset of the new volcano, the circle indicates the bottom topography at the time, which corresponded to an underwater valley.

This second image was captured on board the research vessel of the IEO Ramon Margalef. It clearly shows the volcano of new creation, and the morphology of a tongue of lava, rising from the crater, runs downhill along the course of the old valley.

El Hierro volcano enters Surtsey eruption phase
Posted on November 6, 2011 by Jón Frímann
This is a short blog post about latest events.
***

Earlier tonight a Surtey eruption started in El Hierro volcano. Before this phase did start there has been increased harmonic tremor on seismometers that are located on El Hierro Island. Volcano ash is to be expected while water can still get into the crater. When the water does no longer get into the crater it is going to stop making volcano ash. The ash plume can go up to 3 to 10 km high, depending on the strength of the eruption. New vents have also been opening up south of town of La Restinga. That means the fissure is still growing, at least that was the case yesterday and earlier today from what I can gather. I am unsure of that has continued or stopped.

Earthquake activity still high north west of the town of Frontera. This suggests that fissure might open up there. But so far that has not happened. I do not think this are earthquakes due to tectonic stress changes due to the eruptions in south El Hierro volcano. But this stress changes are because of the magma injections at depth in El Hierro volcano.

Harmonic tremor from the eruption in El Hierr volcano. It now shows clear signs of explosions (strong ones) and increased eruption activity. Copyright of this picture belongs to Instituto Geográfico Nacional.

If new vents open up closer to the shore there is going to be instant Surtsey eruption activity. But that might only last for a short while the water gets into the crater. There the lava stage is reached much sooner then on the vents that are erupting on more depth at the moment.

I am going to post more updates on this. If I can get more details on what is going on.

Analyzing the current situation, there is no doubt that the submarine eruption is very active again. I am still convinced that a collapse of the top part of the new cone occurred yesterday morning (Sunday). The eruptive area colors brown and shows a large accumulation of pumice.
The jacuzzi is showing more activity and the bubbles are getting more important with steam jets on the surface of the water.
The buildup of the new top of the cone may explain the shaking of the ground due to underwater explosions It would not surprise me that the eruption spot will show plumes of steam and ash blowouts in the coming hours

Important Update 07/11 08:52 UTC :

Mooi plaatje. Je kan het licht van het magma onderwater zien.

De bevingen in het noorden zitten wel erg geclustert. Misschien dat daarom de tremors rustiger zijn geworden?

IGN and Graphics rescaling
- When discussing the activity with Raymond during the night, he hard a hard time believing that the harmonic tremor decreased seriously (see update 07/11 23:59).
- He did not detect any serious change while i reported this (of course it was dark and he was reflecting the explosion vibrations he felt)
- I was unable to confirm him that it was a real decrease because the graphics we use are coming from the IGN website and IGN NEVER REPORTS RESCALING the graph. Most of the time it can be seen by white spaces or blue lines in the seismograms and harmonic tremor graphs, but at the time of reporting no visible change was detected. Since midnight it is obvious that the scale was adapted a number of times. We request @ IGN that they will indicate the rescaling actions in a separate log.

El Hierro `Stain now covers 34 hectares

The Ramon Margaleff Oceanographic research vessel has returned to the area surrounding the underwater volcanic eruption off the coast of La Restinga, El Hierro. Scientists on board are believed to be analysing the composition of the gases and mapping the seabed around the vents to assess the current state of the eruption.

Back on the Island, the National Geographic Institute (IGN) monitored a total of 15 earthquakes overnight, measuring between 1.5 and 2.8 magnitude on the scale Richter.

The largest of the earthquakes was recorded at the opposite, Northern side of the Island, at 04.58 hours and had a magnitude of 2.8 degrees, in the northwest of the town of Frontera and at a depth of 20km.
The other earthquakes occurred to the northwest of Frontera, between 10 and 24 kilometers deep, with the most recent occurring at a magnitude of 1.9 magnitude and at a depth of 07.43 hours and at a depth of 17 km.

Meanwhile, the `Deimos-1Spanish research satellite observing the Island has recorded that the eruptive stain now has an approximate diameter of 650 mts and covers an area of 34 hectares (0.34 million square meters).

Marys recent Youtube post gives a thorough review of yesterdays activity (bearing in mind she is working in EST as opposed to GMT) >>>

Yesterday a total of 65 earthquakes were recorded between, the strongest being measured at 06.19 at 3.0 on the richter scale off the coast of Frontera and at a depth of 21km.
Mary Greely blaat iets te veel - in de video staat vermeld dat de explosies tot 100 Meter hoog gaan. Terwijl dat tot zo'n 30 is.

El Hierro 'landmass' just 70mts from surface

Spain's National Geographic Institute (IGN) who are observing the volcanic eruption off the town of La Restinga, on the southern coast of the Island, have reported further changes to the underwater phenomena.

Over recent days the bubbles on the surface above the fissures have changed to produced columns of steam, volcanic gases, lava and ash, thrown an estimated 20 mts into the air.

Yesterday scientists revealed that the water surrounding the eruption had been measured at 11 degrees higher than the average water temperature for coastal waters around the rest of the island.
Meanwhile, Scientists onboard the Ramon Margaleff Oceanographic research vessel have estimated that the solidifying mass of magma rising from the fissure erupting on the ocean floor is just 70mts away from reaching the surface.

As far as the northern coast of the island is concerned, the increase of seismic activity over recent days has heightened fears that a further eruption may occur around the epicentres of the many earthquakes, to the north of Frontera.

For all the Scientists, researchers, Military and Emergency personnel on the island, together with their many resources, there is still little information forthcoming with regards to what is happening on the island - or about to happen.

The Youtube clip demonstrates the force of the activity currently occurring off the coast of La Restinga >>>

09/11/2011 @ 11:26 – The El Hierro underwater volcano eruption seems to have calmed down today as the ‘bubbling’ and ‘steaming’ effect with explosions and the spewing of magma has dissappeared since its spectacular show yesterday. Despite this news, there have been 18 earthquakes on El Hierro so far today, all overe 1.5 degrees Richter.
quote:
Very Important Update 09/11 – 12:22 UTC :
- Scientists in La Restinga and Guardia Civil who is currently flying over the earlier jacuzzi location have reported that the vent has probably closed completely. The activity has completely stopped at the moment. The Roman Margaleff Oceanographic ship is now close to the eruption vent is is problably taking gas samples and water samples.
We expect to publish images soon.
The closure of erupting vents is a normal phase in this kind of activity. This does not mean that the volcano activity is completely over. If the volcano continues in the same pattern, the seismic activity may getting stronger again as the magnma trying to find his way to the surface has been blocked.

Update 09/11 – 11:30 UTC :
- There is a slowdown of the activity. A lot of pumice, but the activity active seaspots have subsided almost completely. Joke is now looking atthe Las Calmas sea at the Montaña Naos (the cliff 150 meter above the Las Calmas sea).
- The world is blind again ! The El Pinar webcam (see picture below) turned black.
- The owner of the La Restinga webcam is still working on a solution involving the authorities and Telefonica. Why do we have a bad feeling about this …

Data Update 09/11 – 11:20 UTC :
- 18 M+1.5 earthquakes occurred since midnight today
- strongest earthquake had a magnitude of 3.0 and occurred at 04:15 NW of Frontera.
- seismic activity is almost unchanged for many days now, the depths are still within the 17 to 23 km range and almost all epicenters are in the El Golfo bay.

Update 09/11 – 13:04 UTC :
The Roman Margaleff has been throwing a buoy near the eruption vent yesterday. The ship is now circling the area. What the ship is doing know can be called a calculated risk. We have to admit that the ship is doing great work in continuous sampling of the emitted gases and the water (he has been observed many times at the edge of the stain the last couple of days). As Patrick Allard was telling in this article before, the composition of the gases is predominant in calculating the risk for the population.

Rij afstand is bijna 40
Maar de eruptie zit in het zuiden. (ja ja, ook daar zijn veel bevingen geweest - ik weet het)
Komt er nog een eruptie ja of nee.

El Hierro eruption quietens

The National Geographic Institute (IGN), who have been observing both the volcanic eruption off the coast of la Restinga, on the southern coast of El Hierro, and seismic activity off the coast of Frontera on the north of the Island, have reported further activity.

A further 18 earthquakes measuring over 1.5 on the richter scale were recorded between midnight and 09.00 hrs GMT, with the strongest being recorded at 3.0 at 04.15 hrs GMT in the El Golfo area of the coast of Frontera, at depths of 17 to 23km.

On the opposite side of the island, scientists on board the Roman Margaleff Oceanographic Research Vessel are still observing the las Calmas bay area in general. Following an increased level of activity over recent days, they are now reporting that, whilst the jacuzzi appears to have stopped for now and vents closed, this by no means suggests that activity has ended.

Eruption at El Hierro Creeping Towards the Surface

A brief update today on all the events at El Hierro – it looks like the eruption continues to work its way closer to the surface of the Atlantic as periodic explosions continue off the southern coast of the island. So far, there hasn’t been any sustained explosive activity that would make the eruption truly Surtseyan in nature, but the last few periods of heightened activity did see larger explosive “bubbles” in at the surface, some potentially as high as 25 meters (see above). The video of the activity clearly shows that the materials reaching the surface are very ash/tephra rich and in the photos of the chain of “jacuzzis”, you can see the clasts of volcanic debris floating (see below) on the surface. Some of the most recent estimates I’ve seen is that the vent is ~70 meters from the surface now, so close to that ~50 meter depth needed to truly get Surtseyan explosions to start occurring regularly. However, latest reports from El Hierro suggest that activity has subsided at the vents (via @teideano) – but government officials have still closed beaches near the eruption due to “toxic gases” (although the articles mentions copper sulfate as the gas, which is confusing to say the least).

The National Geographic Institute (IGN) have reported how seismic activity on the Island of El Hierro was reported yesterday evening at 18.17 and 18.41 GMT, measuring 3.1 on the richter scale, with a further 8 quakes being registered between midnight and 10.00 Hrs GMT measuring between 1.5 and 2.7 on the richter scale and at depths of between 18-22 kms.

Observers also report that, following yesterdays decrease in activity, the `Jacuzziaction erupting from the fissures on the ocean floor of las Calmas, off the coast of la Restinga.

The National Research Council announced this morning that a specially invited number of scientists and experts from the fields of Volcanology, Oceanography, Petrology, Geodynamics, Geochemistry, Meteorology and Atmospheric and Geologic Hazards will meet this afternoon.
The assembly has been called in order to advise the committee for the Special Plan of Civil Protection and Emergency Response for Volcanic Risk in the Canary Islands (PEVOLCA) who will inform the appropriate authorities and public bodies as soon as a common agreement with regards to what is actually happening, or about to happen on the island has been made.

PEVOLCA also intend to try and standardise all of the scientific methodology that is being applied to allow for easier interpretation of the data being observed.

- Since midnight UTC the earthquake activity can be called weak compared to prior days. Only 8 quakes with magnitudes 1.5 or higher.
- Max. magnitude since midnight : 2.7.
- Shallowest earthquake being at a depth of 18 km.
Update 10/22 10:55 UTC:
Joke just arrived at Montaña Naos (Naos mountain) a viewpoint area 150 meter above sea level. She reports that a faint eruption zone is forming again, but without bubbles in the middle like we have seen the prior days.

The picture below was uploaded by Involcan (Instituto Volcanologico de Canarias) and shows the relation in between various parameters like : nr of volcanic earthquakes, the date when the eruption started and the CO² emitted before and after the jacuzzi or eruption action. The last 2 days are not included, so the graph ends with the strongest eruption phase explaining why the CO² values are that high. Clicking on the image will result in a larger picture.

Dag allemaal,

"Update 10/11 – 16:16 UTC:
- Joke has just reported “NO activity on the Las Calmas sea“.
- Harmonic tremor is unstable but not saturated anymore.
- volcanic earthquakes continue but only 17 since midnight, far less than the preceding days.
- Current parameters are showing the weakest activity since a couple of weeks"

11/11/2011 @ 09:01 Scientists prepare for a new eruption, possibly to the north of El Hierro. After a period of calm came a 4.6 degree earthquake this morning, at 00:20 located to the north-west of El Hierro. This is the strongest quake to hit the island so far. Scientists are expecting a new eruption to take place and claim that data points towards a new eruption off the coast of Frontera, to the north-west of the island as this is where all the lastest earthquakes are being detected. So far today there have been 23 earthquakes over 1.5 degrees on the island, three of these have been felt by the islands population.
quote:
Data Update 11/11 08:44 UTC:
- The 4.6 magnitude earthquake was also felt on the islands of La Palma and Tenerife
- we want to stress (before we get a number of questions about it) that this earthquake will have NO relation with the volcanoes on La Palma and Tenerife.
- Joke just told me that she sees NO sea jacuzzi from her house in El Pinar (400 m above the Las Calmas sea). Later today she will move to the viewpoint @ the Naos mountain (where the official journalists are standing)
- Joke is not a journalist of course, she is an artist, and became our volunteer El Hierro eyes while commenting in this website on what she saw. Gradually Joke became our human webcam (she invented the word herself) and reported to the thousands of daily ER readers. Just as many of our readers, she became fascinated by the volcano she is living up the last 25 years.

- Jose Manuel Soria, the candidate of the Partido Popular for the presidency of the Canary Islands (elections to be held on November 20), is currently campaigning at El Hierro and wants to visit Montaña Naos to have a view at the eruption area. He may not be aware of all the journalists he will find at this viewing spot
The evacuated people at El Hierro as well as the business sector are highly dependent on aid from the Canary Islands government.
- Paulino Rivero, e memeber of the PSOE, is the current president of the Canary Islands and apart of a lot of promises, only little has been done to help the people of La Restinga and Las Puntas. Mr. Rivera has now approved bills for direct aid to business owners employing personnel.
- The central government has now given a period of 10 days to fill in the necessary documents to obtain aid.

El Hierro : Largest Earthquake Hits This Morning

IGN scientists observing seismic and volcanic activity on the Island of El Hierro recorded the strongest earthquake to date in the current earthquake swarm - measuring some 4.6 on the richter scale. The activity was measured at a depth of 21km at 00.20 GMT, with an epicenter in the El Golfo bay, off the northern coast of the Island.

The tremors were felt as far away as La Palma and Tenerife, which has heightened concerns that any seismic activity on the former Island "could" have an effect on the Cumbre Vieja Volcano. Observers have concerns that a collapse of the Volcano would cause a landslide, which would in turn cause a tsunami that could potentially devastate much of the eastern seaboard of the US.

Sources on the island have reported that the only incident arising from the activity is a landslide which closed the HI1 road, which was closed for a number of hours until the debris could be cleared.
A further 21 earthquakes were recorded between 2.8 and 3.1 on the richter scale, all located off the coast of Frontera to the north of the Island, according the IGN.

Meanwhile, two beaches on the south of the island, Tacoron and Puerto Naos have been closed to the public due to a government worker being taken ill while measuring carbon dioxide levels.

SPOILER
Update 16/11 – 21:00
- A very strong harmonic tremor since many hours. We expect more eruption activity at least the following hours.
- The scientists station at La Restinga who is monitoring the air quality has NOT recorded any unusual values at the moment
- At 20:32 a M 3.1 earthquake was felt by the people of the north.
- Readers who have witnessed the first phase of the eruption which started on October 9 will certainly recall a similar colorful stain as the beginning of a series of activity events. Among them :
- October 9 – shallow earthquakes to the south of El Pinar (current eruption area)
- October 10 (04:00) : start of harmonic tremor
- October 11 – a colorful stain is noticed (still a lot of discussion whether the color meant an eruption or not)
- October 11 – La Restinga people are evacuated to other parts of the island
- October 13 – first images of a dark brown concentrated substance (what we call now a vent)
- October 13 – RapidEye satellite images show a very concentrated vent (about the same location than the current vent)
- October 16 – The burbuja or Jacuzzi appears in front of the coast.
A range of all kind of Jacuzzi's, stains in different colors and other activity until November 10
- November 10 : Joke reports a Jacuzzi, color free Las Calmas sea
Current phase
November 13 – A new stain is forming
November 14 – new brownish dark grey nucleus in the greater stain
November 16 – very noticeable vent to the south of La Restinga
The following dates ? : We expect gradually stronger submarine eruptive action creating a new jacuzzi and magmatic material arriving at the surface (this expectation is based on the first eruptive phase).

#ElHierro Enrichment of helium between 4,000 and 35,000 times higher than normal in the sea south of La Restinga

quote:
Scientists at the Institute of Technology and Renewable Energies (ITER), an agency of the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife which now form part of volcanological Institute of the Canaries (non-tip), reported to management of the Civil Protection Special Plan for Volcanic Risk Canary Islands (Pevolca) on the results of his research on chemical and isotopic composition of dissolved gases in the area of submarine eruption, which have provided results in an enrichment of helium in water from the sea south of La Restinga .

Ensure that the purpose of this study is to detect and delineate water bodies affected by discharges magmatic-hydrothermal volcanic-submarine volcano from the south of La Restinga.

According to his data, geochemical vertical profiles carried out in the sea the Las Calmas near the area where there is more volcanic gases bubbling highly significant enrichments reflect helium (He) and carbon dioxide (CO2) dissolved in seawater. These enrichments are stressed about 100 meters deep in vertical geochemical profiles closer to the bubble located south of the Restinga as a result of the depth of the submarine eruptive mouth, the magnitude of volcanic-download-magmatic hydrothermal and ocean current predominates.

Experts explain that helium is the second most common element in the universe, after hydrogen, however, the atmosphere contains only five parts per million (ppm) of helium, with concentrations in sea water are still much lower, as there become 4-7 ppt higher than helium (He).

Also, the helium enrichment observed in the Sea Las Calmas become between 4,000 and 35,000 times higher helium concentrations considered normal seawater.

The realization of these geochemical vertical profiles has been made possible by the logistical support provided by the research vessel "Professor Ignacio Lozano 'and the collaboration of the Canary Institute of Marine Sciences (ICCM), the Canary Islands Oceanic Platform (Plocan) and the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO).

Currently two members of the non-tip are in the Oceanographic Vessel 'Ramon Margalef' of the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) in order to evaluate the possible existence of helium enrichment in the sea water north of the island of El Hierro .

Non-tip is an institution demanded unanimously by the Senate (2005), Parliament of the Canary Islands (2006) and House of Representatives (2009) with the aim of contributing to improving and optimizing the management of volcanic risk in Spain.

Theorie:

Update 17/11 – 15:29 UTC
Mexican reader and Google+ fan Martin Rey (also a contributor to our Nabro volcano report (Eritrea)), attracted our attention to a number of very interesting reports from the IEO (Instituto Español de Oceanografía). The Román Margalef belongs to this oceanographic institute. Most of the research of the Ramón Margalef is only communicated to Pevolca or to the IEO itself. The outstanding reports are giving a scientific insight in their research until now. The reports have been published from November 9 until today.
Martin Rey has created a very good image on the depth of the erupting vent, a question raised regularly in the comments. Why don't we see a lot of action on the surface while everybody is telling that the eruption goes on ? Although we have no official confirmation of our version we expect that the present eruption takes place in at least 2 major vents. The red colored stream on the picture is the erupting magma which gradually changes into yellow when the magma it is cooling.
Martin has calculated that the depth of the vent closest to La Restinga would be 156 meter. The second vent deeper in the Las Calmas sea is approx. 400 meter deep.
The eruptive material from the La Restinga vent arrives at regular times at the surface (with or without Jacuzzi). The material from the deeper vent is picked up by the currents and is carried away at a depth of approx. 300 meter.
Finally, the stain can well be seen at the image as the yellow color hanging at the upper part of the image.
We presume that the days that we do not see any surface action from the vent, although everything indicates that the eruption is continuing, a strong sea current maybe the reason for a diluted stain.
If you do not agree on our theory, just let us know in the comments.
Our sincere congratulations to Martin Rey, IEO and the crew of the Ramón Margalef.

Some readers have asked us about the size of the Jacuzzi's. As Pevolca, IGN or CSIC almost never gives this kind of information, the picture below might give you a clue. To our own surprise, the Jacuzzi looks far bigger than we initially expected it. The relation in between the size of the helicopter overflying the stain. We assume that the picture has been taken on November 9 (but this is only a guess as the picture is not showing any properties).
Peter Cobbold, a volcano watcher at the Volcanocafe discussion blog : So the bubble is about 20 helicopters diameter= 240m. Thats small. Surtsey before it broke out from underwater was erupting a column of steam and ash 400m across at its base and 1000m+ high.

The fissure eruption progresses and the tunnel cracks

Since submarine eruption occurred on 10th October, all to think that the crisis would end in a few days. But it was not. We have 40 days of eruption and do not know when this is completed. In the north of the island in El Golfo began a new seismic crisis hypocenters deeper and somewhat higher magnitudes. Also the direction of the new crack is different: it aims at La Restinga directly. If it progresses to the ground, the danger increases and thus, risk.
The risk is not whether there will be eruption or not. The status of tunnel of Roquille is worrying. On October 18, technicians inspected it and found many deficiencies caused by earthquakes: cracks in several tranches, with the anchors detached wires, deprendimientos in the key, ie the current state is dire. With popular pressure, who is now dares to say it is dangerous to travel on it while continuing to earthquakes, some of magnitude 4.0?
Another day I'll tell you what the rooster tails.

Update 22/11 – 11:40
Reader Paul Abuelo (a multiple commentator) attracted our attention on a sublime document entitled "The Canary Islands Hot Spot". The extract quotes : The Canary archipelago comprises seven main volcanic islands and several islets that form a chain extending for ~ 500 km across the eastern Atlantic, between latitudes 27°N and 30°N, with its eastern edge only 100 km from the NW African coast. The Canary Islands developed in a geodynamic setting characterized by Jurassic oceanic lithosphere formed during the first stage of opening of the Atlantic at 180-150 Ma and lying close to a passive continental margin on a very slow-moving tectonic plate – the African plate. In addition, the archipelago lies adjacent to a region of intense active deformation comprising the Atlas mountains, a part of the Alpine orogenic belt. Click here to read the entire document.

Now all eyes turn to the north by the earthquakes, but we must not lose sight of the volcano in the South, the tremor continues to fall and is still active.

The reading of the descent of the tremor and as I said this morning, is that either the system is losing pressure or is clearing the road and washed out better by merging edges that cause tremor.

The case is that the option in which southern volcanic system continue to lose pressure, seeing that the tremor that begins to have explosions, and if it continues that way, or there is a chance of water entry into the system we could find something no one expected, the water from the volcanic system, and then we got the surprise of a possible full-scale revival by interacting with the magma water in the ducts. In fact I think it happened once, when the tremor began to give out those explosions and light gray spots and fine material in the water.

Commented this possibility, especially how close the current eruption of the village of La Restinga and because one thing I worry about the possibility that another mouth open near or close to the same or the same and this must be taken into account, as the magma flowing beneath the town, so if the time came, no one be surprised if it happens.

In the event of that would be awful for the town and the people of the Restinga, because if such were the case to be opened in the port or next to one of the piers would hydromagmatic explosion of several hundred meters .

We'll see what happens at the end, nature has the last word, and although pre-eruptive activity North portends something in that area, there is no need to remove the eye to the activity of the volcano south of La Restinga. (Enrique).

Tanganasoga Vulcano Inflation
November 22

This will be a rather short post. During the last day I have received some information regarding Tanganasoga. Apparently it has been known for some time, but held back from the general population of El Hierro, that Tanganasoga is suffering from rapid inflation due to magma injection.

The Inflation

Even though I had two individual sources stating this, I still wanted to have additional confirmation before I wrote about it. After all, now we are talking about a volcanic feature that possibly can cause fatalities. So to get a bit of confirmation I asked GeoLurking to make a plot of the current uplift. It seems to indicate that there is an ongoing inflation in the Tanganasoga volcano.

tanganasogaplot.png

Carbon dioxide map

CO2 is one of the premier gasses when you try to judge a volcanoes state. If you have an increased emission from a volcano you have yet another precursor to a possible eruption. As can be seen on the image below the area of Tanganasoga is leaking CO2 quite badly right now. The northwestern red area is related to the Roques de Salmor gas-vent.

gasmap.jpg?w=640&h=415

Tanganasoga inflation

The inflation of the Tanganasoga Volcano puts strain on the rock face pointing down towards the village of Los Llanillos. As the rock face is put under strain it will sooner or later start to shear and parts of the rock face will start to come loose and fall down.

There is also a small risk of a lateral collapse of the mountain side if an eruption occurs at Tanganasoga. I am not saying that it would be like Mount Saint Helens, the pressure is just not there. But, between 0.5 and 2 cubic kilometer of rock going down into the bay is not good news. And then on top of that, magma flowing down after the falling rocks. Well, I for one would not like to be in the way of it all.

Let us be clear on one thing, I am not saying that there will be an eruption at Tanganasoga. But the pressure build up on the rock alone requires diligent monitoring. And the political will to evacuate Los Llanillos if there is an increased risk of a larger rock fall due to mountain tension. If the risk increases even more, which I think is likely after seeing the CO2 map. They need to make serious preparations for evacuation of everything from Frontera to Sabinosa. Because if there is an eruption at Tanganasoga there will be rockslides, magma flows, and yes even the small risk of pyroclastic flows. And it will all most likely be going into the town of Frontera, so there is not being any leeway for risking a non-evacuation. It is time for the small boys of IGN, Pevolca, Involca and the rest to grow up, and grow a pair.

quote:
Look at it as a constantly heated cooking pan. If the fire underneath remains the same, the cover will regularly blow off some steam. The same is the case here. The vent is feeded with new material / gases (from the deeper areas in the El Golfo area) and when the pressure gets higher than the water column, it blows off. As we had only 2 volcanic earthquakes today and a more or less harmonic tremor, the process is not too much altered (like it was the case many times before). When the stain was seen at first (around October 10) a similar process had started. Very few earthquakes with a growing colorful stain. So, the main reason why there are so few earthquakes today, is that multiple vents have been opened (see the pictures from yesterday), and that a lot of material is erupted. If the process follows the same pattern than during the October 10 phase, more action is expected. Unfortunately bad news for the fish and for the people of La Restinga.
Armand

quote:
My take is that this might be the final blow of Bob, and that the tube will shut down soon in a systemic collaps. Afters that Bob may, or may not, erupt closer to the harbour, in the harbour or onland.
But, the current reports of sulphuric smell at Frontera tells an alternate story, a story that is corroborated by a lot of circumstantial evidence and an official report from one of the organisations stating that the most likely thing to happen now is an eruption happening on the line from Tanganasoga to Los Llanillos (Net ten westen van Frontera).
I made a mini-post comment yesterday about this after reading the internal report of the organisation in question.
-------------------

# ELHIERRO. Signals appear 'lp' in the north, one indicator of an eruption precursors

quote:
Elblogoferoz .- Although they have fallen in the north of El Hierro the number of earthquakes, yesterday have appeared with some frequency volcanic signals 'lp' (long period), as confirmed by the official communication from Civil Protection Plan for Volcanic Risk (PEVOLCA). These signals were recorded at the seismic station of La Palma, one of the indicators are precursors of an eruption.
For those unfamiliar with the terminology a sign 'lp' is like a jerky tremor and clear evidence of magma movement.
In addition, there is increased pressure continues to increase and diffuse emission is carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere by the volcano island of El Hierro. The information provided yesterday by the Institute of the Canary Islands volcanological (PEVOLCA), reflecting that has reached 2186 ± 87 tons per day, an amount equivalent to 6.34 times the normal average value considered for the diffuse emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the island of El Hierro (345 tonnes per day).
Volcanic gases. Since last July, scientists at the Institute of Technology and Renewable Energies (ITER), an agency of the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife, the 8500 non-tip have been more diffuse flux measurements of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the Island El Hierro through numerous scientific surveys on volcanic gases diffuse emissions that have materialized over the entire surface of the island of Isla Meridian.

Pevolcan continues to record an increase in the diffuse emission of CO2 by the insular volcanic system
mancha_varios.jpg

The purpose of these scientific surveys to assess spatio-temporal variations of the diffuse emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere by the volcanic system island of El Hierro in the context of the recent seismic-volcanic crisis Island Meridian . On the other hand, realize the reasons for this type of scientific stem from the inability to obtain such information through permanent instrumental networks, to be absolutely convinced that the gases are the driving force of volcanic eruptions and the importance of Carbon dioxide (CO2) in volcanic surveillance programs because it is the second major component of volcanic gases after water vapor, and its low solubility in molten magma silicitados-- making carbon dioxide (CO2 ) to escape with their ease of volcanic systems in depth.
Seismicity and deformation. For its part, the direction of PEVOLCA in relation to the seismicity that develops in the north of the island are reducing the number of earthquakes, repeating a pattern of depth, although there have been "quite often a type of volcanic signals (lp) in the Stations of the north coast and a new seismicity in the south to a depth of between 13 and 17 kilometers. " These phenomena are not significant at this time but "must be analyzed in case there is recidivism."
In this line, the strains remain in the horizontal direction is a lack of trend, most of them have a depression, and continues a pattern of stability in the area located in the Gulf. Tremor signal also no evidence that there is another source that the well-known eruption. For the National Geographic Institute is expected seismicity maximum of 4.5 on the Richter scale.
As to the impact on the sea surface underwater volcano, the area stands emission looks blue-green in their outer parts and dark central area is clearly defined. It should be noted that its position has not changed.

New support to the population. Finally, the Canary Islands Government Council approved at its meeting on Thursday the modification of the decree of Grants and exceptional measures to mitigate the damage caused by earthquake-volcanic crisis of El Hierro in order expand the coverage of these, according to ACN Press.
The new decree states that may be granted aid businesses, entrepreneurs and professional bodies active in the nuclei of the points and the Pozo de la Salud, both in the municipality of La Frontera.
Likewise, aid will be extended to business owners that were not included explicitly in the previous decree and part-time workers at 250 euros each. It also expressly provides that the maximum amount of aid will be $ 3,000 (one thousand euros to the activity and up to 2,000 per template).
Furthermore, the Governing Council also agreed to request the central executive exemption from payment of Social Security payments for the months of August, September and October 2011 enterprises carrying on business as usual in a permanent and localities affected by volcanic and seismic processes in the island of El Hierro and return, if any, of the contributions for those months already paid.
As explained by the deputy government spokesman and Communication, Martin Marrero, is ultimately, "that the State Government not to allow a limited extension in the payment of fees, as is reflected in A Royal Decree approved in late October, but proceed exemption, as it did because of the torrential rains that hit the archipelago in early 1999. "
Marrero said that "we are paying the aid that are pending in the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Security and which are about 60". "Over the next week to pay the aid and crews from 11 October to 31 December, in advance," he added.
In the same vein, on Thursday declared emergency as the draft Border Highway Sabin. The spokesman explained that "what is sought is the economic recovery that involves the construction of a highway and improved road communications to the island."
