The words "price tag" were spray painted on the mosque, Rosenfeld added — a reference to a Jewish settler practice of attacking Palestinians in retaliation for government operations or attacks against Jewish settlements.
An official at the mosque, Ali Zangria, told Army Radio that a villager detected smoke rising from the mosque around 2 a.m. and contacted police.
"But everything had already gone up in smoke by then," he said, ruing that his village had been singled out for attack.
Security was heightened across northern Israel to prevent further disturbances and police met with village leaders in an effort to defuse tensions, Rosenfeld said.
Israeli Arabs account for one-fifth of Israel’s population of 7.6 million, and many live in northern Israel.
The mosque was the third burned since the government destroyed structures in an unauthorized Jewish settlement outpost in the West Bank last month. An Israeli military base was also vandalized after the demolitions and threatening graffiti was sprayed at the apartment of a prominent Israeli settlement opponent. Jewish extremists are suspected in all of these incidents.
Most "price tag" actions are carried out in the West Bank, and attacks on mosques inside Israel are rarer.

Amjad Awad, 19, suspected of murdering five members of the Fogel family in Itamar last March together with his cousin, Hakim, has confessed to the crime.
Just last month, the Samaria Military Court sentenced Hakim, 18, to five consecutive life sentences and another five years in prison - a total of 130 years behind bars. Hakim and his cousin Amjad brutally murdered Ehud Fogel, 36, Ruth Fogel, 35, 11-year-old Yoav, 4-year-old Elad and 2-month-old Hadas.
Moments before the sentence was read out, Hakim Awad managed to say that he was not sorry and explained that he murdered the Fogels "because of the occupation". The judges said then that they avoided sentencing him to death "because it wasn't effective with those kinds of people".

Syrian President Bashar Assad on Tuesday threatened to set fire to the Middle East, and especially Israel, if NATO attacks Syria, the Fars news agency reported.
In a meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, Assad said: "If a crazy measure is taken against Damascus, I will need not more than six hours to transfer hundreds of rockets and missiles to the Golan Heights to fire them at Tel Aviv."
The Syrian president stressed that Damascus will also call on Hezbollah in Lebanon to launch a fierce rocket and missile attack on Israel, such that Israeli intelligence could never imagine.
