Kamui Kobayashi heeft voor de Grand Prix van Japan 60 slachtoffers van de catastrofale tsunami uitgenodigd. De tsunami in Japan vond in maart dit jaar plaats en Kobayashi wil iets terugdoen voor zijn landgenoten.

HRT is closing in on a deal for experienced designer Jorg Zander to head up its technical operations, as part of an effort to ramp up facilities in Munich.

With HRT's new owners Thesan Capital helping team principal Colin Kolles push forward with plans to help the outfit move forward, a rethink about its technical operations has been under way over the past few months.

AUTOSPORT understands that an original plan to set up a design office in Brackley has been abandoned, and that the idea now is to base the operation out of Munich, which is just an hour's drive away from the team's race factory at Greding.

A deal put in place for the team to use the Mercedes-Benz wind tunnel facility in Brackley will continue.

As part of his new technical role, Zander is set to be put in charge of the Munich facility to help push forward with the design of the 2012 car, and he will work in tandem with new chief aerodynamicist Stephane Schosse, who has worked at Toyota, Sauber and Ligier in the past.

Zander has a depth of experience in F1, having worked at Toyota, BAR, Williams, BMW-Sauber, and then Honda/Brawn GP - leaving in the middle of the team's title-winning 2009 campaign.

The technical shake-up at HRT appears to point towards technical director Geoff Willis no longer being part of the team's plans, having originally joined the outfit in February 2010 as a consultant.

HRT has officially confirmed that Narain Karthikeyan will make his anticipated return to a race seat for the Indian Grand Prix.

Karthikeyan will also be back in the car for Friday practice at next weekend's Singapore GP in preparation for his home race.

"Of course it's a great feeling to be driving on a grand prix weekend once again, and on the subject of my home Grand Prix of India, the team had assured me that I'd be driving when I stepped out of my seat after the European GP," said Karthikeyan.

The 34-year-old Indian lost his HRT race drive to Red Bull protege Daniel Ricciardo before Silverstone, but it was always understood that he would get another chance at India's inaugural Formula 1 on 30 October. This was underlined when Karthikeyan concluded sponsorship deals for racing at the event.

He has remained part of the HRT operation and ran in Friday practice at the Nurburgring in July.

Team boss Colin Kolles said the Singapore outing was to ensure Karthikeyan was not too rusty when he reclaimed his race seat for India.

"It is great to have Narain back in the car as it will give him critical seat time before he drives at the Indian GP," Kolles said.

"He is the best driver to come out of the region and is undoubtedly extremely talented as he has proved through his progress this season."

Ricciardo told AUTOSPORT that he expected to be the one to move aside for Karthikeyan in India, rather than his team-mate Vitantonio Liuzzi.

The team has signed a deal with Renault and that means that next year Williams ought to be back in the hunt in the mid-grid and not in the current mess. What will turn the team back into a stronger force is good leadership. Success brings cash in F1 so the aim of the team should be to climb as high as possible in the Constructors’ Championship.

Kimi left F1 two years ago, wanting to do something else. He has done two seasons in the World Rally Championship and made a limited impression and then he popped up in NASCAR, although that seemed to be another false start. The signs are that he is thinking more about getting back into F1, if he can. He is only 31 but his lack of interest in his final year at Ferrari did not leave a good impression. It was felt that he had achieved his ambition and won a World Championship and did not seem particularly motivated to win another. Getting back into F1 was always going to be a challenge, as was seen when Renault F1 decided on Nick Heidfeld rather than Kimi. Whether Kimi is the right man to lead a Williams revival is an arguable point, but it might be a good move.

Team Lotus extends Renault and Red Bull technical deal through 2013 and adds KERS

Team Lotus has announced that it has extended its Renault engine deal through to the end of 2013, with a view to the partnership continuing beyond that date.

The Hingham-based squad will also continue to use gearboxes supplied by Red Bull Technology, and will use KERS for the first time next season.

The original agreement between Lotus, Renault and Red Bull expired at the end of next year.

Lotus boss Tony Fernandes said: "Having established an incredibly good working partnership since the first days of our agreement we are absolutely delighted that Renault Sport F1 and Red Bull Technology will be playing such an integral role in the ongoing development of our team until at least 2013, and then we are aiming to keep working together when the new rules are introduced.

"They are both passionate, dedicated teams of people with whom we have a growing relationship that is creating a number of exciting opportunities for us for the future. They share our vision for where we want to take our team, and we are very proud to have their power pushing us forward."

Fernandes sees the addition of KERS next year as a particularly valuable part of the new deal.

"Not only will we be able to build on everything we have learnt through working with Renault and Red Bull Technology in 2011, but we will now have the added benefit of KERS for next year, which really is a major step forward for our team," he said.

"We have done the very best job we can this year but without that extra power we are always competing on a different level to the teams ahead, so to give our drivers that boost is a key element of helping us catch the cars ahead, and compete with them when we do so."

Renault Sport F1's managing director Jean-Francois Caubet is confident that Lotus will make strides up the field during the coming years.

"This year we have established solid foundations with Team Lotus and this latest agreement consolidates the relationship that we look forward to continuing for many seasons to come," said Caubet.

"Renault is in F1 to display the quality of its product, so we need to be associated with teams that clearly have potential. The steps Team Lotus has made on and off track with its technical structure and facilities have given us a confidence they will achieve their aims.

"KERS is now an essential part to a competitive performance in F1 today and we hope this supply will help the team continue its evolution. Furthermore a wider experience of using the KERS system at this point in time will help in the development of the powerful energy recovery systems that will be introduced under the future engine regulations."

The deal was also welcomed by Red Bull chief Christian Horner, who said the joint arrangement with Lotus underlined the collaboration between his organisation and Renault.

"This endorses the joint venture between Renault Sport F1 and Red Bull Technology, which will continue to develop in the coming months," Horner said. "Hopefully this will enable Team Lotus to build on the significant progress they have already made this season."

Lotus had hoped that the Renault/Red Bull package would be a key ingredient in its progress up the field in 2011, as it aimed to score points in its second year in Formula 1. But so far, although the gap to the cars ahead has narrowed slightly and it has remained clear of fellow 2010 arrivals Virgin and HRT, Lotus has not threatened to break into the top 10 and 13th places are its best results of the season. However it is on course to finish 10th in the constructors' championship for a second straight year.

In addition to Lotus, Renault also supplies engines to champion team Red Bull and its former works operation, which presently still runs under the Renault name. From next season, Williams will also use Renault power again for the first time since its title-winning days in the 1990s.
