Spannend dus.

supermooi artikel in de satirische New Yorker van vandaag :
D.S.K. in Jail: The View from Paris - Posted by Philip Gourevitch

This was the only story on French cable TV news this morning: Dominique Strauss-Kahn, chief of the International Monetary Fund, was reported to be “entirely nude” when a “chambermaid” entered his “three thousand dollar a night suite” at the Times Square Sofitel, at which point he “precipitated” himself on her, then “precipitated” her onto the bed, forcing her to perform “une fellation,” until she fought free of him, and “escaped,” calling the police, while he threw on some clothes and, leaving behind his cell phone and other “personal effects,” he “fled” to J.F.K. International Airport, where he was ensconced on an Air France jet minutes before takeoff for Paris when detectives stopped the flight, and removed him to a “commissariat in Harlem,” where he was held on suspicion of attempted rape and involuntary imprisonment in connection with a sexual assault. (He was expected to enter a not-guilty plea in court by evening.) His accuser was treated for minor injuries at a hospital, and he spent the night at that “commissariat in Harlem”—“in Harlem,” “in Harlem,” “in Harlem,” the newscasters kept repeating. French reporters stood in front of their cameras in the rain in lower Manhattan and referred to the Tombs, where the accused was to make his appearance, as “le palais de justice.”

Dominique-Strauss-Kahn_blog.jpgAs Paris woke up to the news, the chattering classes began texting and e-mailing and phoning one another with updates and rumors, repeating the same phrases of the plot synopsis—“entirely nude,” “three-thousand-dollar room,” “attempted rape,” “Harlem”—with a mixture of disgust and Schadenfreude. It was a profound shock to the French system that D.S.K., as he is known, should be booked as a common criminal, and jailed for a violent crime. But, even as everyone on TV paid lip service to the presumption of innocence, nobody in the political classes bothered to fake genuine surprise to find him accused of a predatory attempt to gratify his sexual urges, or of conducting himself with a sense of grotesque entitlement.

D.S.K. has long had a reputation as a gluttonous womanizer and shamelessly conspicuous consumer in Paris; nonetheless, he was, until this morning, considered the leading candidate for the Socialist Party’s nomination in next year’s presidential election, with a very good chance of defeating the incumbent, Nicolas Sarkozy. (One of the clips that got play on the French news stations today showed D.S.K. sporting a T-shirt with the legend, “Yes we Kahn!”) Sarkozy’s camp claimed to welcome his challenge, precisely because D.S.K.’s appetites seemed to cancel out the popular perception of Sarkozy as a jetsetter (he is often mocked as President Bling Bling). As a Figaro columnist recently remarked, Sarkozy’s problem is that he likes rich people, and Strauss-Kahn’s problem is that he likes money.

D.S.K. had not yet formally declared his candidacy, but there was little doubt here that he would. In anticipation, the journalist Michel Taubman has just published a sort of biographical portrait, composed with enough literary license that he called it, “Le Roman Vrai de DSK“—“The True Novel of DSK.” Taubman was on TV today, declaring that the hero of his story always had good relations to the women in his family, and was not some frustrated, hard-up guy, but a man of great intelligence who had no difficulty scoring. (As if that were the issue in this case.) Of the now-former I.M.F. boss, imprisoned in Harlem, Taubman said: “This Dominique Strauss-Kahn bears no resemblance to the Dominique Strauss-Kahn I know, and those close to him know: a seducer, yes, a rapist, no.”

Socialist Party leaders also took the line that the D.S.K. depicted by the N.Y.P.D. was unrecognizable. Laurent Fabius, a former Socialist prime minister said the charges “provoke incredulity,” and Martine Aubry, the first secretary of the Socialist Party, said she was “totally stupefied.” Aubry, who was seen as a potential Presidential candidate even before D.S.K.’s fall, used her minute of airtime to call on the party faithful to remain “united and responsible.” And Francois Hollande, who is seen as the Socialist most likely to replace D.S.K. as the party’s presidential favorite, decried the “terrible news” and warned: “We must react at once with emotion and also with restraint, with reserve, with concern for justice… We must guard against any premature conclusion.”

Nicolas Sarkozy, who is not known for biting his tongue, saw fit to do so today, but Le Monde’s excellent correspondent at the Elysée palace, Arnaud Leparmentier, reported on his blog that members of Sarkozy’s entourage there were playfully lamenting: “This happened too soon.” The Sarkozy camp, according to Leparmentier, was expecting D.S.K. to blow up, but would have rather he’d waited until the final weeks of the election campaign—a year from now. Under the circumstances, one advisor said, “Nothing needs to be said, let history unfurl.”

The only politician who seemed to know exactly what to say when the news broke was Marine Le Pen, the leader of the National Front, which she took over in January from her father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, the long-time leader of France’s extreme right. Marine Le Pen, who is the political sensation of the year, having surged ahead of Sarkozy in some polls, appeals to a disillusioned French electorate by portraying the leaders of the traditional right wing (Sarkozy) and the left (the Socialists) as virtually indistinguishable: out of touch, decadent, corrupt, cosmopolitan elitists. “I’m a bit astonished by the hypocrisy of the reactions,” she said of the protestations of astonishment and sorrow from the mainstream political class. And she said, “I was not particularly surprised by this affair.” After all, she said bluntly, D.S.K.’s “pathological” treatment of women has been the buzz of Paris for months. She spoke of his “fragility,” and his “addiction,” and said, “today the machete fell.”

This being France, within minutes of the first news of D.S.K.’s arrest, there were rumors that he was the victim of a plot. Christine Boutin, the leader of the Christian Democrats in France, declared that D.S.K. had been entrapped, although she did not specify by whom, or how—but there was no shortage of possibilities floating in the French ether today: Sarkozy, of course, or Socialist rivals, or else, I heard someone say, the Russians who are unhappy with how he has dealt with them at the I.M.F., or maybe the Greeks, whose economy has self-destructed almost as thoroughly as he now has. You could even find D.S.K. being called the new Dreyfus. In conversations with writers, and reporters, and intellectuals around Paris today, I found that nobody quite believed these fancies, but nobody could resist speculating about them either. D.S.K.’s behavior, in and of itself, was just too suicidal to make sense entirely by itself.

Then again, everybody I spoke with in Paris agreed that if he had done in France what he stands accused of doing in New York, it would likely have been kept much quieter, and not be the lead story all over the world today—or tomorrow. This is a country, after all, that welcomed Roman Polanski when he fled after pleading guilty to the statutory rape of a child in California—and it was from Paris that the campaign to defend his escape was mounted most vigorously last year. (“Watch the anti-Americanism come on strong in the next few days,” one Parisian friend said.) But these were private conversations. Marine Le Pen, however, made the thought public. D.S.K.’s “pathology”—she loved that word—was obvious, she said: “Yet for years everything was hidden by everyone because that’s a little bit the system in France.” In the coming days, she said, she expected there’d be more stories, and already by day’s end young women were coming forward to say they regretted keeping quiet for so long.

At her office outside Paris a few days ago, I asked Marine Le Pen, whose personal brand of ultra-nationalist populism often makes a particular point of the challenges facing women, whether she sees herself as a sort of feminist candidate. Not at all, she said; she is a candidate for the French people. “But,” she said, “women are French people too.” Listening to the political classes attempting to come to terms with the destruction of Dominique Strauss-Kahn today, I heard hardly a thought for his accuser. It seemed a good measure of the depth of France’s political malaise that it took a Le Pen to show solidarity with the working woman against the Socialist Party’s favorite son.

U.S. to hit debt limit, will dip into pension funds

REUTERS — 6 MINUTES AGO

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States is expected to reach the legal limit on its debt later on Monday and will start dipping into federal retirement funds to give the country more room to borrow, a Treasury official said.
The U.S. Treasury will settle $72 billion in maturing bonds on Monday, which will push the country right up against its $14.294 trillion borrowing cap, the official said. (Reporting by Rachelle Younglai; Editing by James Dalgleish)

International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn allegedly forced a New York City hotel housekeeper to perform oral sex and submit to anal sex, in addition to allegedly attempting to rape her, according to a complaint filed today by the office of Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance.

The complaint charges him with two counts of criminal sexual act in the first degree, one count of attempted rape, sexual abuse in the first degree, unlawful imprisonment, sexual abuse in the third degree and forcible touching.

The complaint is a terse charging document, less than a full page in length.

It charges that he forcibly touched the housekeeper's breasts, attempted to pull off her panty hose, twice "forcibly made contact with his penis and the informant's mouth" and that "the defendant engaged in oral sexual conduct and anal sexual conduct with another person by forcible compulsion."
