ABC has announced that two of its three soap operas -- All My Children and One Life to Live -- will go off the air in the coming months. General Hospital will be left as the network's only remaining soap.
"While we are excited about our new shows and the shift in our business, I cant help but recognize how bittersweet the change is," Brian Frons said in a statement. "We are taking this bold step to expand our business because viewers are looking for different types of programming these days. They are telling us there is room for informative, authentic and fun shows that are relatable, offer a wide variety of opinions and focus on real life takeaways."
"All My Children and One Life to Live are iconic pieces of television that have made an indelible mark on our cultures history, Frons continued. Each of the shows has touched millions and millions of viewers and informed the social consciousness. It has been a privilege to work with the extraordinary teams who brought the residents of Pine Valley and Llanview to life each day, and we thank the cast, crew, producers and most especially the fans for their commitment to the shows through their history."
Together, All My Children and One Life to Live combine for 84 years of broadcast history. All My Children is slated to go off the air in September. One Life to Live will conclude its run in January 2012.
"It saddens me that All My Children is canceled. I've loved playing Erica Kane and working with Agnes Nixon and the incredible people at AMC," said Susan Lucci (Erica Kane, AMC). "Im looking forward to all kinds of new and exciting opportunities."
"ABC just cancelled AMC and OLTL. End of an era. So sad. Fond memories," Cady McClain (Dixie Martin, AMC) posted via Twitter.
"Saddened and shocked by the news of #AMC's cancellation," added Eden Riegel (ex-Bianca Montgomery, AMC). "It's the end of an era. I love you, AMC."
"WOW. RIP #AllMyChildren," Leven Rambin (ex-Lily Montgomery, AMC) added on her Twitter page. "The end of an iconic era and huge part of my life. What a travesty!"
"Six more months of really good show! This has been the best group of people that I've ever worked with," Jordi Vilasuso (Griffin Castillo, AMC). "I am blessed to have been part of AMC!"
Castle star and one of One Life to Live's Joey Buchanans, Nathan Fillion, wrote, "A moment of silence for a disappearing genre. OLTL & AMC, we'll miss your hard work and talent."
"So saddened by the cancellation of All My Children and One Life to Live! Sad to see an era die off," McKenzie Westmore, who is best known to soap fans for her work on Passions, but who also appeared as a doctor on All My Children.
"Heart goes out to my friends at AMC/OLTL and their fans," Emmy winner Sarah Brown added.
"It's a sad day in Pine Valley. We're all still trying to absorb the news..." Stephanie Gatschet (Madison North, AMC) told fans. "Thank you all for your support! #AMC has the best fans ever."
"Thank you all for all the supporting tweets and words of encouragement. Feelings about this are bittersweet," offered Denise Vasi (Randi Hubbard, AMC). "AMC and its legacy ends but we were all blessed to be a part of true television history!"
Both soaps will be replaced with talk shows. The first is called The Chew, which will have a food-themed focus. The second is a show tentatively called The Revolution.

WTF. Ze hadden 8 langlopende soaps in de VS, waarvan er nu dus 4 gestopt zijn/worden: Guiding Light, As The World Turns, All My Children, One Life To Live.
Het aantal soaps is dus gehalveerd.

Nu zijn alleen nog Days Of Our Lives, General Hospital, The Young & The Restless en The Bold & The Beautiful over.
Waarom zijn leuke soaps zoals As The World Turns stopgezet, terwijl een waardeloze, saaie baggershow als The Bold & The Beautiful hoge kijkcijfers haalt?
B&B is geen bal aan.
