• Turkije: heeft bekend gemaakt de 'nodige voorbereidingen' te gaan treffen.
• Zweden: heeft aangegeven steun te zullen verlenen wanneer de NATO daarom vraagt. Stuurt humanitaire hulp.

Maar toch, het beoogde doel van deze dingen was om in de koude oorlog Russische tanks uit te schakelen, indien die een massale opmars zouden maken. En dat zijn dezelfde tanks die G nu in gebruik heeft. 1000 meter bereik met een raket die zelfs de zwaarste tanks van G in n klap uit het veld ruimt.
Maar goed, bij een dergelijke wapenleverantie is het ook wel handig dat de ontvangende partij er mee om kan gaan. De rebellen die geen militaire achtergrond hebben gaan hier niks mee raak schieten als ze het proberen, en als het ze al lukt zijn ze gevaar voor eigen omgeving. De overgelopen militairen gaan een belangrijke rol spelen als er wapens worden geleverd.

Dat Egypte zich hier direct bij heeft betrokken vind ik opzich wel een goede zaak. Het liefst dat alles soepel verloopt en geen moord en bommen gooien, maar bloedvergieten is uiteindelijk onvermijdelijk als een dictator weigert zijn functie neer te leggen.
Dit kenmerkt toch wel een hele belangrijke ontwikkeling in de Arabische wereld. Een ontwikkeling die in sommige landen vlot gaat, en in andere landen misschien nog wel decennia op zich laat wachten. Maar de toon is gezet; Na alle jaren onderdrukking, moord en verdwijning, is het volk daar helemaal klaar met leiders die alleen zichzelf dienen. De tijd is rijp om de rekening met hun voormalig onderdrukkers vereffenen.
Al verkeerd Egypte nog in onzekerheid en moeten de verkiezingen nog plaatsvinden, denk ik wel dat het volk daar eindelijk meer vrijheid krijgt, en in ieder geval niet meer op z'n hoede hoeft te zijn voor die verderfelijke inlichtingendiensten van Mubarak. When gunfire breaks out in Tripoli, it pushes a city on edge into paroxysms of speculation and rumor. The gunfire was heard in the early hours of Thursday, and went on in staccato bursts for a little more than an hour. It took place outside the Rixos Hotel, where the journalists stay, which is just a few minutes' walk to Muammar Gaddafi's Bab al Aziziya compound. Witnesses to the aftermath described "pools of blood" on the streets. "But you won't find anything now," a resident, who cannot be named in order to protect his safety, told me a few hours later. "The fire trucks came to hose it all down." A friend quipped, "They probably used shampoo to make sure they got it all up." Dark humor has become the trademark of Libyans in a town with little reasons to laugh.
The fight, I was told, took place between a small band of rebel boys from the restive neighborhoods of Tajoura and Souk al Juma, armed with stolen weapons, and Gaddafi's volunteer militia - civilians given arms by the government. The reasons are unclear. The Libyan speaking to me surmised that the rebels, some 30 in total, were attempting to make a show of force at the gate to Gaddafi's compound, but no one knows for sure. What is clear, he told me, is what happened next: the security forces intervened, stopped the fighting and captured the rebels. The Libyan, who comes from those neighborhoods, didn't think any had been killed, though there had been plenty of injuries he said. (See photos of the battle for Libya.)
At a press conference that evening, Government Spokesman Moussa Ibrahim swatted away questions about the early morning conflagration. "I always try to advise my friends not to celebrate by shooting in the air," he sighed with mock exasperation. "But it is a genuine Arab tradition. As far as I know there was no fighting in Tripoli last night. People heard good news, so they were shooting in the air." The good news? There had been no airstrikes on the city that night.
I asked the Libyan witness to the post-shooting cleanup what he thought would happen to those rebels he said had been captured by the security forces. "They will disappear of course. And next time there is an airstrike, they [the authorities] will bring out their bodies and say they were civilian casualties." I asked him if he really believed that, or if he was just being cynical. "I believe they will do anything," he replied. (See the rebels' high cost of reclaiming their towns.)
Apparently, so does Amnesty International, which just released a report detailing an alleged government campaign of enforced disappearances throughout the country. Ibrahim slammed the report in his press conference, saying: "We are fed up. [International human rights organizations like Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International] are losing credibility. They are making wild claims about our abuses of human rights, against prisoners of war and armed rebels. ... They are sitting in Benghazi, where the terrorists are, and making claims about what is happening in Tripoli."
He went on to explain that in a situation of war it is inevitable that people disappear. But just because something bad happens, the government should not be blamed. "First of all, hundreds of young Libyan boys were tricked into joining the revolution. They go to join with no papers, no I.D. Some die, some escape and some are traumatized and go to the hospital. They are either killed or taken by the army. We do not kidnap people." (Watch the passionate Libyan rebels in action.)
A question about a ceasefire proposed by the rebel National Opposition Council elicited a furious tirade. "It's a trick," said Ibrahim, explaining that the conditions - Gaddafi's forces withdraw from the cities and allow peaceful protests - were impossible. "You're not offering peace if you're making impossible demands," he said. "We will not leave our cities. We will not stop protecting our civilians. If you want peace, you leave things as they are."
The press conference, of course, had been called to complain about airstrike-inflicted civilian casualties. As Ibrahim spoke, video footage of wounded women, children and men being treated at a hospital rolled on the screen behind him. He offered to take journalists to the town of Bou Aqoub, near the oil town of Brega, to see for ourselves the civilian dead. I couldn't help but wonder if the bodies in Bou Aqoub look anything like the rebels in Tripoli.

In a call I had with some of the freedom fighters in the city of Az Zawiya, they told me what they have from information regarding the latest events in the city. The city has been overrun with troops from Gaddafis battalions, most of them are foreign mercenaries and some Libyans also. In every street there are tens of them, some above buildings and roofs of houses which have become empty from their residents.
The northern area of the city is near empty of residents. The majority of them fled southwards after their houses were shelled by Gaddafis tanks and rocket launchers. Houses are deserted and have been broken into, looted and robbed by Gaddafis mercenaries. Many of the stores and shops have been burned and looted also.
Anyone who goes outside from the youth is either killed or kidnapped to an unknown location. The number of people kidnapped has exceeded 3000 and the martyrs 500 so far. Killings, rapes and transgression, I swear the situation does not require any exaggeration.
The city of Az Zawiya has been destroyed and its residents live in a state of fear, horror, murder and kidnappings. Basic food supplies are near non-existant, childrens milk is not available at all. The youth and elderly are being kidnapped and even women have not been spared from this. The number of kidnapped and missing women has reached 88 so far. I swear by God that the martyrs are being buried in peoples back gardens/yards.
There are many many reports which illustrate Az Zawiyas painful and terrible situation. No food supplies are permitted to enter the city and checkpoints are extremely thorough. Gaddafi wants to cleanse Az Zawiya from its free and liberated citizens, and despite all this, the revolution is still ongoing in the city. There are nightly attack by the freedom fighters even though their ammunition is limited and mercenaries are present on mass. The freedom fighters have not stopped struggling and defending their city, even if it means their operations are small.
We are awaiting for the Transitional National council to put pressure on NATO so that it can perform air strikes on Gaddafis forces in Az Zawiya so that the revolutionaries can control it once more. The revolutionaries are in a ready state and only ask for Gaddafis forces to be bombed.
The council needs to make it clear to the media and press what the city of Az Zawiya is going through. What has been mentioned is only some of what is happening in the city, and may Libya live free forever. Freedom is coming soon by the will of God.2019: The Great Awakeningcolleteral damage?

A Reuters correspondent waiting near the eastern gate of Brega, a sparsely populated settlement spread over more than 25 km (15 miles), heard the thud of explosions and machinegun fire on Sunday morning.
Black smoke rose further west and hundreds of cars carrying volunteer rebel fighters streamed away from the town. Later, half a dozen rockets struck near the gate. Rebels waiting there held their ground.
"Those planes that circled last night didn't hit anything," said rebel fighter Osama Abdullah, suggesting the absence of air strikes was the result of NATO taking command of the coalition forces from France, the United States and Britain.
"(French President Nicolas) Sarkozy is great but NATO is not," said Abdullah.
A Western coalition air strike killed 13 rebels late on Friday near Brega's eastern gate. The source, a doctor who was not identified for security reasons, told CNN two people were injured by an initial mortar blast. The rest of the injured were wounded by a second mortar blast when they went to the scene of the first attack to help victims.
One of the injured is a 14-year-old child who suffered a fractured skull and is in a coma, the doctor said Sunday.
The clinic that was attacked had evacuated patients because of recent attacks, said another doctor at a Misrata hospital that received the patients. But it was being guarded by opposition "fighters and young people" who were injured.
Elsewhere in the city, the sound of heavy shelling was heard coming from the port area, a resident said.

De Libische vice-minister van Buitenlandse Zaken, Abdelati Obeidi, is per vliegtuig onderweg naar Griekenland, meldt Reuters op basis van een bron bij de Tunesische veiligheidsdienst. Het is niet bekend of het een vlucht is, dan wel een poging tot een diplomatieke uitweg.

Het lijkt nu dat Obeidi, waarnemend minister van Buitenlandse Zaken, niet gevlucht zou zijn naar Athene. Al Obeidi komt in Athene een boodschap van Gadhafi overbrengen aan de Griekse premier Giorgos Papandreou. Abdel Ati al-Obeidi, the Libyan deputy foreign minister, has met with George Papandreou, the Greek prime minister, in Athens, though officials refuse to divulge what the content of the discussions was.
Papandreou's office says that Baghdadi al-Mahmudi, the Libyan prime minister, requested the meeting during a phone conversation on Saturday. Papandreou has also discussed the Libyan crisis with British PM David Cameron on Friday, Qatari PM Sheikh Hamad bin Jabar al-Thani on Saturday and Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday.
On Friday, al-Obeidi had said the Gaddafi government was attempting to hold talks with Britain, France and the United States.
Earlier, another Libyan envoy had visited Athens in March to meet with foreign ministry officials ahead of an EU meeting on the Libyan crisis.

Libya official in Athens to convey Gaddafi message
(Reuters) - Libyan Deputy Foreign Minister Abdelati Obeidi flew to Greece Sunday to deliver a message from Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to the Greek prime minister, a senior government official told Reuters.
His trip came after Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou had a phone conversation with Libyan Prime Minister Al-Baghdadi Ali Al-Mahmudi Saturday on developments in Libya.
"They (Libyan government) requested to send an envoy with a message for Prime Minister George Papandreou and that is why he is in Athens," said the official, who asked not to be named.
It was not clear what the message was about, the official said. Obeidi was expected to meet Papandreou late Sunday, the prime minister's office said.
Along with Gaddafi, Papandreou spoke with Qatar's Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jabr Al Thani Saturday, Turkey's Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan Sunday, and UK's Prime Minister David Cameron Friday.
Earlier Sunday, a security source at Tunisia's Djerba airport told Reuters that Obeidi crossed from Libya into neighboring Tunisia and from there flew to Athens.
Tunisia's official TAP news agency also reported that Obeidi crossed overland into Tunisia and was heading to Djerba airport, near the border, adding that he was not on an official visit to Tunisia and had not been in contact with Tunisian officials.
Last week Libyan Foreign Minister Moussa Koussa crossed into Tunisia then flew from Djerba airport to Britain. The British government said he had defected.
In Tripoli, Libyan officials were not immediately available to comment on Obeidi's movements.
Obeidi served as prime minister under Gaddafi in the late 1970s, and later was head of the General People's Congress, or parliament. His current post is minister of state for European affairs.
Greece has said it will not send any warplanes or take part in air strikes against Libyan targets but the NATO-member country has made available to European and U.S. forces the Souda military base on the island of Crete and three other air bases.

TRIPOLI, Libya - At the Rixos Hotel, Moammar Gadhafi's gilded cage for foreign journalists, fistfights break out. Paranoia is high. And the Libyan government is on unblinking watch for any deviation in the official script.
Waitresses who serve coffee with smiles on their faces act more like trained intelligence agents hours later, when a woman bursts in claiming that militiamen had raped her. They expertly wrestle her to the ground.
Government minders feed reporters the narrative of a nation united behind its longtime leader, then arrest or even expel those who sneak away to find out for themselves. Government-led trips dubbed "magical mystery tours" by the press corps sometimes turn perilous.
And then there's the noise, the pro-Gadhafi music blaring on the bus with state journalists singing along and pumping their fists in time and even in journalists' rooms as housekeepers clean them.
The psychological stress is much different from that faced by reporters on the front line in eastern Libya, where bullets, mortars and rocket-propelled grenades are the threats.
The Rixos, by contrast, is a five-star hotel, though it has rapidly declined as journalists and minders have taken over the building and some staff have fled. Still, for Western journalists accustomed to press freedoms, working in Tripoli under Gadhafi's rules has in some ways been tougher than reporting from a battlefield.
One reporter muses about whether his dinner is being drugged. An Italian journalist punched a government minder and had to be pulled off the man by a couple of British reporters.
A French journalist threw his coffee at his cameraman during an argument, but it landed on the back of a government spokesman, who had to change his clothes. Another punching fight ensued.
"It has become a competition to see who gets kicked out first," one American journalist has a habit of saying.
Some journalists already have been deported most of them Arabic speakers. They are more tightly controlled than the rest of the corps because they understand the culture better, and have many times caught discrepancies in the government-paid translators who try to control the interviews and information.
When Iman al-Obeidi barged into the hotel to tell her story of being gang-raped, it was the Arab journalists who were harassed the most for trying to interview her. Government minders called them traitors of their own culture and said they should understand why the other Libyans were unhappy with her dramatic entrance.
Al-Obeidi now faces criminal charges.
Reporters are lectured at press conferences, accused of not doing their job, of not "asking the hard questions" or "asking the wrong questions."
When an Associated Press reporter was trying to decipher the exact story of how a missile allegedly hit a farm in Tripoli, the minders called her unprofessional and said she was trying to skew the story.
Journalists have to put up with the government control if they want to report from Tripoli. Even though they see little Gadhafi does not want them to see, they have a unique window on the conflict quite possibly the most important window if his regime falls.
For now, however, the experience can be disorienting and excruciating.
"Good moooorning all jooournalists!" Moussa Ibrahim's call booms over the hotel's public address system every day, the hint of a British accent in his perfect English betrays the 15 years he lived in the United Kingdom.
The hotel itself has lost some of its sheen. Hotel management has canceled room service and laundry service, and has taken all the pictures and decorations off the walls. Chairs and tables have been removed from a pretty terrace where some journalists used to drink coffee and work it's now a desolate hall people use as a smoking room.
Each day sees a "magical mystery tour" a government-run bus trip to see a location around Tripoli. It usually turns out to be nothing like what the minders described.
At their worst, the trips leave the press corps in fear of their lives. There was the night the bus ran out of gas outside the Gadhafi stronghold of Sirte, almost stranding journalists in the desert as rocket fire pounded nearby.
On another trip, unhappy locals opened gunfire at the bus and journalists had to run for cover.
The trips usually end with at least one very loud staged rally: Gadhafi supporters waving green flags and dancing around for the benefit of the television cameras. The print reporters will try to sidle to the sidelines to talk to anyone who seems like they're not part of the rally, only to be ushered back to the main crowd by the government minders.
Reporters are so tired of the staged rallies they now stand listless during the events, smoking cigarettes and wincing at the loud pro-Gadhafi shouting.
The hotel lobby has become a meeting point to share information, rumors and gossip for the reporters.
Sometimes a couple will attempt to sneak out of the hotel, minderless, but it has become increasingly difficult to do this with taxi drivers getting in trouble for driving foreigners around town.
If on the off chance, journalists are able to slip away and get one or two precious quotes of dissent in the capital, they walk around with the sense of pride that comes with beating the system, and brag to their colleagues and competitors about their work.
Usually the sneaking trips have ended badly some reporters were arrested, cuffed, detained for a day, disappeared for a few hours, or kept in a parking lot to get berated by Gadhafi militiamen.
Sometimes just being arrested feels like work has been done that day.

1. Revolutionaries attacked Gaddafis forces that were stationed in an area called Taghma. Their attacks began at 5am and continued attacking till 10am which resulted in Gaddafis forces suffering losses in men and weaponry. Gaddafis forces retreated to the area of Jfara where they began indiscriminately firing Grad missiles into the town of Al Qalaa. This random bombardment caused the residents to flee to an area called Thaahir Al Qalaa.

Eman They did not take me to the doctor or a hospital. They did not take me to a health or psychological. Rather, they kept me in custody for 3 days. For 3 whole days I was kept in custody for investigation purposes with all the different branches. The Intelligence Agency, the External Security, the Internal Security, The Criminal Investigation Department, The Directorate of Securitythere wasnt a single security branch that did not question me. Eman They were saying that I was refusing to go to the medical examiner. But I DID go to the medical examiner and he proved that I was raped and subjected to forced sexual intercourse. But after 3 days and pressure from the media, they transferred me to the Attorney General in Tripoli. And after they received confirmation from the Medical examiner they told me that they will take all necessary measures to arrest those who were responsible, but till now till this hour, I was at the Attorney Generals office and they have not done anything so far.

WASHINGTON The U.S. agreed to NATOs request for a 48-hour extension of American participation in coalition airstrikes against targets in Libya and U.S. lawmakers cautioned Sunday the allies need to know more about the rebels fighting Moammar Gadhafis forces before providing them with weapons.
Two weeks into the assault on Gadhafi, Republican lawmakers expressed concern that a stalemate could leave him in control of portions of Libya and with access to stockpiles of chemical weapons.
The U.S. is shifting the combat role to Britain, France and other NATO allies, but American air power is still in demand. Air Force AC-130 gunships and A-10 Thunderbolts and Marine Corps AV-8B Harriers will continue to attack Gadhafis troops and other sites through Monday evening. One of four journalists covering the uprising in Libya has been released after being arrested for a second time.
One of four Al Jazeera journalists detained by Libyan forces has been released after a bizarre turn of events that saw the team being arrested, freed and then rearrested.
Lotfi Al Masoudi, a Tunisian national, crossed the border into Tunisia on Sunday night.
An Al Jazeera spokesman said that the network is "glad to see the end of the ordeal that Lotfi unnecessarily went through" while calling for the immediate release of his colleagues.
A statement from the network blasted the arrest of the journalists as "a grave breach of human rights as established by international law and conventions guaranteeing the freedom and safety of reporters, especially those operating under the extreme conditions of war."
"We are extremely grateful for all the sincere and generous efforts of heads of state, diplomats as well as legal, human rights, media and press freedoms organisations from around the world to secure the release or our colleagues."
Lotfi, along with Ahmad Val Ould Eddin, a Mauritanian national, Ammar Al-Hamdan, a Norwegian national of Palestinian descent, and Kamel Al Tallou, a Libyan citizen, was freed once before.
The men were initially detained on March 19 near Zintan, in the country's northwest. They were released on March 31, only to be rearrested later that same day.
After they were freed on March 31, Al Masoudi, gave an interview to a Tunisian radio station, saying that he and his colleagues had been treated well.
The three non-Libyan nationals met with their respective ambassadors in Tripoli to plan their departure for Tunisia the following day.
But all four men were rearrested just hours later, with Libyan authorities providing no information on why the journalists were rearrested or where they were being held.
Other foreign journalists detained in Libya, such as two BBC correspondents, who were also detained and released, have spoken of rough treatment that includes beatings and mock executions.
Reporters from The New York Times and AFP news agency are also among those who have either been detained or are missing since the violent conflict between pro-democracy rebels and Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's started in February.
The Committee to Protect Journalists has recorded at least 60 attacks on journalists in the North African country since the start of the unrest, with 33 documented arrests and two fatalities, including Al Jazeera cameraman Ali Hassan Al Jaber, who was shot covering a protest 50km outside Benghazi.
Ahmad Val Ould Eddin first joined Al Jazeera in 2008. He worked as a correspondent in South Africa for a couple of years before he returned to the newsroom in Doha. He reported on Africa, which led him to cover Libya during the recent uprising. A Mauritanian, he has two daughters, Layla and Lubna. He writes a blog called "Kounach", in which he collects articles he published in several newspapers. He is a passionate reader of Arabic poetry, especially by Al-Mutanabbi.
Lotfi Al Masoudi joined Al Jazeera from CNBC Dubai in March 2007 and started off as a presenter for Al Jazeera Sport. He is a native of Kairouan, Tunisia, and his main professional goal has been to make sure that Al Jazeera stays at the forefront of the news industry. This devotion took him to Libya to cover the conflict there as a correspondent. Lotfi is 34, married, and has a 2-year-old son named Mohamad Khalil. Lotfi and his wife Amira hope to have a family reunion soon.
Kamel Al-Tallou joined Al Jazeera as a cameraman recently, driven by his passion for journalism despite his medical education and background as a doctor. Al-Tallou studied medicine in Tripoli before working as a doctor in England until 2009. Kamel, 43, is married with three sons and one daughter.
Ammar Al-Hamdan is a Norwegian cameramen with a multicultural background. He is of Palestinian origin, born in Baghdad in 1977 and brought up in Oslo, where he married a Norwegian journalist. TRIPOLI, Libya Col. Muammar el-Qaddafis son Seif el-Islam is proposing a resolution to the Libyan conflict that would entail his father relinquishing power for a transition to constitutional democracy under his sons direction, a diplomat with close ties to the Libyan government said Sunday, citing eminent people in Tripoli.
But neither Colonel Qaddafi nor the rebels seeking his ouster appear ready to accept such a proposal, the diplomat said, speaking on condition of anonymity to divulge private conversations within the Libyan government.
Despite the evidence of deep internal discontent, Colonel Qaddafi appears to believe that rebellion against him is a foreign conspiracy of Islamist radicals and oil-hungry Western powers attempting to take over Libya, the diplomat said. And the rebels, who have set up their own provisional government, continue to insist on the exit from power of Colonel Qaddafi and his sons.
This is the beginning position of the opposition, and this is the beginning position of the Libyan government, this diplomat said. But the bargaining has yet to commence.
The diplomats account could not be confirmed and Libyan officials have declined to comment on any talks. Speculation has swirled about a possible proposal from the Qaddafi camp since Seif al-Islam el-Qaddafis top aide, Mohamed Ismail, traveled to London for undisclosed talks with the British several days ago. The diplomats account is the first insight into the content of those talks and the latest sign that the Qaddafi government may be feeling the pressure from two weeks of allied airstrikes that have severely diminished the advantage in equipment of the Qaddafi militias.
The London talks coincided with the defection of one of Colonel Qaddafis closest confidants, the foreign minister and former intelligence chief Moussa Koussa, followed closely by the exit to Egypt of another former foreign minister, Ali Abdussalam el-Treki.
British officials have so far declined to describe any conversations with Mr. Ismail.
Militarily, the rebellion appears to be locked in a stalemate. On the eastern front, near the oil town of Brega, the two sides exchanged rocket and mortar fire for several hours on Sunday but the battle lines did not change.
Loyalists continued to hold most of the town, with the rebel forces massed on the road to the northeast of the city.
In Tripoli, armed checkpoints keep the capital locked down. And the United Nations resolution authorizing airstrikes does not include the deployment of Western troops on the ground in Libya.

Proposals and counterproposals for a cease-fire appeared deadlocked as well, the diplomat noted. For Qaddafi a cease-fire means everyone should cease firing but the Qaddafi forces should stay where they are, but for the rebels it means that the Qaddafi forces should withdraw, the diplomat said.
Seif al-Islam el-Qaddafis proposal follows years of public efforts on his part to call for a transition to a constitutional democracy. He has said that his father was a historically unique figure and that Libyas next leader should be elected to serve for a limited time under a legal system spelled out in a constitution.
To many Libyans who do not support the armed revolt, Seif al-Islam represents a hope for more gradual change. In a recent interview with the pan-Arab news channel Al-Arabiya, another Qaddafi son, Saadi, suggested that before the revolt Seif al-Islam el-Qaddafi was the person who used to run the show every day in Libya.
But in the opaque and convoluted Libyan system, in which neither Colonel Qaddafi nor his son Seif al-Islam hold any formal office, how decisions are made is often impossible to discern.
During the revolt, though, Seif al-Islam el-Qaddafis position has been indistinguishable from his father, vowing swift retribution against the rebels and potentially tarnishing his credibility as a voice of reform. He has argued that the early and healthy peaceful movement for political opening was quickly co-opted by foreign terrorists determined to bring down the Libyan government.
Rebels said Sunday that the Western airstrikes had begun hitting the heavy weapons of the Qaddafi forces even within cities. A spokesman for the rebels controlling the besieged city of Misurata said that on Friday night the airstrikes had hit two tanks and three armored vehicles of the Qaddafi forces that had entered the city. But on Sunday morning Qaddafi forces outside the city continued shelling an area near the port, while Qaddafi gunmen occupied rooftops along the central Tripoli Street, said the spokesman, Mohamed, whose last name was withheld for the protection of his family.
In an interview in Tripoli, S. Levent Sahin Kaya, the Turkish ambassador, said a Turkish hospital ship has left the Misurata port with 250 patients seriously injured in the fighting to take them for surgery abroad. The Qaddafi government had sought to direct the ship first to Tripoli or to postpone its trip for security, Ambassador Sahin Kaya said, but instead the Turkish government sent it directly to Misurata with the escort of ten F-16 fighters and a warship.
The humanitarian side is so important to us, the ambassador said. We are the only country able to speak with both sides, he said, referring to both the rebels and the Qaddafi government.
We think a cease-fire should be reached, and after a cease-fire a political solution can be discussed, he said. This is the Turkish position. He declined to address the details of any cease-fire talks.
About 50 foreign embassies remain open in Tripoli, including those of Turkey, Russia, Bulgaria, Ukraine and China as well as sub-Saharan African countries.

De Libische opstandelingen hebben een speciale brigade gevormd die uitsluitend bestaat uit overgelopen regeringssoldaten. De hoop is dat zo de gevechtskracht van de minimaal georganiseerde opstandelingen vooruit gaat.
De gevechten bij de steden Brega en Misrata gaan onverminderd door. Moeammar Gadaffi heeft ondertussen een gezant naar Griekenland gestuurd met de boodschap dat hij wil dat er een einde komt aan de gevechten. Schijnbaar zoeken de Libische autoriteiten naar een oplossing, aldus de Griekse minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Dimitris Droutsas.
Mogelijk is er ook gesproken over een vredesplan van Gadaffis zoon Saif, dat volgens Libische diplomaten momenteel zou circuleren. Volgens dat plan zou Gadaffi aftreden, waarna Saif een overgangsgang zou leiden tot aan democratische verkiezingen. Een anonieme diplomaat meldt dat het plan vooral een startpunt is voor onderhandelingen, Gadaffi zou nu nog niet bereid zijn om zijn macht af te staan.
Al dagen werd er gesproken over een reorganisatie van de opstandelingen, die over doorgaans niet meer beschikken dan een kalasjnikov en veel enthousiasme. Het is een verzameling van vrijwilligers uit alle geledingen van Oost-Libie, varirend van ziekenbroeders tot zakenmensen, moslimstrijders en hangjongeren.
De meest professionele individuen aan de kant van de opstandelingen zijn de naar de rebellen overgelopen militairen van Gadaffi. Een dieptepunt tot dusver wat betreft het ongedisciplineerde gedrag van de rebellen kwam afgelopen vrijdag, toen een NAVO-vliegtuig per ongeluk een positie van de opstandelingen bombardeerde. Dertien rebellen kwamen om.
Van de kant van de opstandelingen kwam enkele uren later een verklaring voor de fout: de rebellen zouden als uiting van vreugde in de lucht hebben geschoten toen de gevechtsvliegtuigen opdoken, waarna de westerse piloten te maken dachten te hebben met stellingen van troepen loyaal aan Gadaffi. Daarop voerden zij een aanval uit.
Inmiddels komen er van het front berichten dat er spanningen zijn tussen de vrijwilligers onder het opstandelingenleger en gedeserteerde oud-soldaten in ditzelfde leger. In een poging een gedisciplineerde en daardoor effectievere gevechtseenheid te vormen is er nu inderhaast een brigade gevormd die alleen bestaat uit gedeserteerde soldaten en gepensioneerde militairen. Hoe groot deze brigade is, wilden de rebellen niet kwijt.
Verder zijn er tussen rebellenhoofdstad Benghazi en het front een aantal wegversperringen opgezet om vrijwilligers zonder militaire ervaring weg te houden van de strijd.
