Ik had al een enorm respect voor oorlogsjournalisten, maar de afgelopen maanden is dat naar ongekende hoogte gestegen.
Wat mij betreft mag de -social- media dit jaar de nobelprijs voor de vrede krijgen.

Of Mohamed Bouazizi natuurlijk!! Zonder hem hadden al deze omwentelingen nooit plaatsgevonden.

Natuurlijk staat Al-Qaeda niet aan de kant van Khadaffi maar aan die van de rebellen, dat is logisch. Maar ik denk niet dat lokale bevolking staat te springen om een samenleving in het ideaal van Al-Qaeda...

Reporters were allowed by U.S. military officials to interview some of the pilots and other crew based at Aviano, in northeast Italy, where F-16s have taken off for night missions over Libya earlier in the week. They are the first accounts of their sorties in the U.S.-led airstrikes.

Air Force Capt. Ryan Thulin, an F-16 pilot, recalled on Friday how even with night goggles the desert sky over Libya was so dark only the towns below were visible.

The 28-year-old Thulin, from Michigan, has flown some 800 sorties.

The uncertainties and fear over what is to come and what is happening at present remain rife in Libya, as the coalition air strikes on military targets continue. One Tripoli resident - who did not want to be identified for security reasons - describes the mood in the capital.

Who ever thought that an oil-rich country like Libya could face fuel shortages?

That is exactly what is happening as I write these words. People - including myself - have been scrambling to fill up the tanks of their cars in anticipation of what appears to be a looming threat of fuel shortage - or even worse - no fuel at all.

It is one of the few reports on state television you can take at face value. It is also physically visible in the long queues at petrol stations across the capital.

My relative and I spent two hours waiting our turn on Thursday, and in the end we succeeded only because the manager is a friend of a friend of a neighbour. As instructed, we reversed into the petrol station from the exit end and shamelessly re-fuelled as others stared us down with visible disdain.

I never thought I would live to see the day where you needed "connections" to get petrol here. My friends in other parts of the city tell me many stations are closed for business, which fuelled even further panic.

Hoewel 'confirmed' altijd met zout genomen moet worden zal het vast niet G's peace missie zijn welke bij de stad aankomt. De stad ligt/lag sowieso wel onder vuur en dat zou (deels) zijn opgehouden na het zien van coalitie vliegtuigen boven de stad/omgeving.

UPDATE 1-French forces destroy seven Libyan aircraft on ground

PARIS, March 26 (Reuters) - French warplanes have destroyed five Libyan military planes and two helicopters at Misrata air base in the past 24 hours, France's armed forces said.

Armed forces spokesman Thierry Burkhard said all seven Libyan aircraft were destroyed while on the ground at the base, near the insurgent-held town of Misrata, as they were preparing to carry out attacks in the area.

A patrol of French Rafale fighters, backed by an E2-C Hawkeye AWACS, carried out air strikes overnight and around 20 French planes supported by four tankers and an E3F AWACS struck targets during the day, the armed forces said in a statement.

Pro-Gaddafi forces had earlier pounded the town with tank, mortar and artillery fire that halted only as coalition aircraft appeared overhead, a rebel told Reuters.

The five planes destroyed at Misrata were Galeb fighter jets and the helicopters were MI-35's, the French armed forces said.

Two French and two Qatari Mirage 2000-5 jets carried out a joint surveillance mission of Libyan airspace from an air base on Crete, the statement also said.

Een vliegtuig dat van Misrata airport opstijgt is natuurlijk eerder boven Misrata-stad dan een of andere jager die nog moet opstijgen.
Aangezien Gaddafi nu al weken probeert zoveel mogelijk schade aan te richten en alles op alles aan het zetten is om Misrata te heroveren, vind ik het geen vreemde actie van de geallieerden.

Tripoli-Benghasi, March 26th, 2011 - (Democratic Libya Information Bureau) During the opening days of the Libyan uprising Saif Al Islam Gaddafi invited the international media to come to Tripoli and see for themselves that the people are with the regime. At the time, the regimes narrative was that there was nothing going on at all and that the uprising was somehow the concoction of Al Jazeera. It has since morphed into a combination of Al Qaida infiltration; western imperialism and youths high on Tramadol, a painkiller whose only side effects are constipation and drowsiness.

It is no secret that the international press have effectively been under house arrest ever since they arrived. Their purpose, as far as the regime is concerned, is to film government press releases and conduct interviews with the Tyrant and his sons. Occasionally, they would be taken on a tightly choreographed field trip to see pro Gaddafi supporters chanting and singing. The fate of some of the journalists who have ventured out without government permission has been detention, deportation, torture and some have simply disappeared without a trace.

Today the regimes attempt to keep journalists from witnessing the truth backfired when the truth came to them. Iman El-Obeidi, a Libyan national, stormed into The Rixos Hotel, one the hotels housing the international press, to show the world her wounds and bruises and tell the journalists that she had been raped by no less than 15 Gaddafi thugs. El-Obeidi was pounced on by security officials who then stuffed her into a car as she yelled that they were taking her to prison. Even more disturbing was the reaction of the staff at the Rixos hotel some of whom picked up table knives and threatened the panicked woman whilst others attempted to cover her face and silence her in any way they could. Journalists attempting to intervene on her behalf were kicked and beaten by government officials. Footage of the incident has since been shown on several news networks. The government later blamed the incident on the womans mental state and claimed that she was drunk, adding two new elements to their twisted narrative. Iman El-Obeids fate remains unknown. However, what is known is that she is a hero of the Libyan uprising. She showed great strength and courage in the face of the oppressors and we pray for her safety.

The Gaddafi regime has committed almost every conceivable crime against the Libyan people. In Zawiya the tyrant has even managed to commit crimes against the dead by exhuming bodies of victims so as to leave no trace of the crimes committed. The regime has kidnapped over 20,000 men between the ages of 15 and 60. They have stormed hospital wards and thrown the wounded from the windows. Thugs have looted shops destroyed homes and raped women all in the name of the great King of Kings.

Yesterday, in what can only be described as a sick joke, the regimes delegation to the African Union meeting said that it is now ready for a ceasefire and to talk to the pro democracy revolutionaries about their legitimate demands. If our demands have not been clear we would like to take this opportunity to clarify them once and for all. We demand the unconditional surrender of the Gaddafi regime, the prosecution of all those responsible for the crimes committed against the Libyan people and a transition to democracy. These are the only terms we are prepared to offer and these are the only terms we are prepared to accept.

Gates baseert zich naar eigen zeggen op rapporten van Amerikaanse inlichtingendiensten. Daarin zou staan dat Kadhafi op die manier aan de wereld wil laten zien dat er burgerslachtoffers vallen bij de militaire acties tegen Libië.

(Reuters) - U.S. intelligence reports suggest that Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's forces have placed the bodies of people they have killed at the sites of coalition air strikes so they can blame the West for the deaths, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said in a television interview on Saturday.

"We do have a lot of intelligence reporting about Gaddafi taking the bodies of the people he's killed and putting them at the sites where we've attacked," Gates said according to interview excerpts released by CBS News' "Face the Nation with Bob Schieffer" program, which will air on Sunday.

A U.S.-led coalition began air strikes against Libya a week ago to establish a no-fly zone over the oil-exporting North African country and to try to prevent Gaddafi from using his air force to attack people rebelling against his rule.

Last week Libyan officials said nearly 100 civilians had been killed in the coalition strikes, but Western military officials at the time denied any civilians had been killed.

"The truth of the matter is we have trouble coming up with proof of any civilian casualties that we have been responsible for," Gates said in the television interview.

Asked if Gaddafi's days were numbered, Gates replied: "I wouldn't be hanging any new pictures if I were him."

U.S. officials have said the goal of the military action is to protect civilians, not to topple Gaddafi, though they have made no secret of their desire for him to leave power.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, appearing on the same program, said there were signs that Gaddafi's aides were becoming increasingly nervous.

"The people around him, based on all of the intelligence and all of the outreach that we ourselves are getting from some of those very same people, demonstrate an enormous amount of anxiety," she said according to the interview excerpts.

Volgens mij gebruikt Gaddafi nog iets anders dan geweld tegen zn eigen volk. Er lopen echt totaalidioten bij en die heb ik nooit eerder gezien in andere landen in die regio. Dat hele Libië, je kan er een soap over maken man, alleen al die Gaddafi familie, maar sinds de opstand heb ik echt al 100 x keihard moeten lachen, hoe ernstig en triest het ook is.

Hiervoor ben ik zelf nooit echt anti-Gadaffi geweest, totdat hij zijn eigen volk ging bestoken met artillery en luchtaanvallen. Maar op dit punt is alles beter dan Gadaffi, al hoop ik wel dat de Libiers voor democratie kiezen.

Ik denk dat het een beetje te snel gaat, en het de vorige keer nu ook fout ging. Maar je ziet goed hoeveel verschil het maakt als er geen/weinig artillerie beschietingen zijn. Tja ze zitten nu redelijk veilig in Ra's Lanuf als er materiaal aan komt rollen dan wordt het eerder uitgeschakeld dan wat anders want er lijkt tussen Surt(Sirte) en Ra's Lanuf geen grote plaats van betekenis meer te zitten.

Dus het is wachten tot alle tegenstand uitgeschakeld is en dan voorzichtig Surt benaderen, en zorgen dat je bevoorradingslijnen niet worden afgesneden.

hoe is het gisteren in misrata afgelopen ? ( na dit soort berichten );
