Samenvatting van vandaag: Hamas schiet vier projectielen de grens over, IDF schiet daarop terug met vier doden tot gevolg, Hamas schiet weer een projectiel.

Ik heb nog een beetje zitten tellen, met behulp van de lijsten op Wikipedia en diverse nieuwsbronnen ben ik uitgekomen op 103 projectielen die sinds 1 januari 2011 vanuit Gaza zijn afgeschoten. In heel 2010 zijn er 265 projectielen afgeschoten.

The rocket apparently landed din an open area south of Ashdod. There were no reports of injury or damage. Security forces were searching for the rocket's exact landing site. Sirens were also heard in Gan Yavne and Kiryat Malachi, with some residents reporting that they heard explosions.

"People here are panicking," Ashdod resident Yair Shalom told Ynet. "I saw my neighbors running downstairs frantically, and people on the street leaving their cars behind and running to secure areas." Tuesday was one of the more turbulent days Israel has seen since the war against Hamas during the winter of 20082009 ended. In response to a mortar attack on the Negev, the IDF shelled a neighborhood in Gaza and accidentally killed a number of civilians, including two youths, aged 11 and 16, and two men, aged 20 and 50. The army said terrorists were also hit in the attack, and expressed regret over the deaths of civilians. The IDF has launched and investigation into the incident to check why the force's radar malfunctioned and if the commander's decision to open fire was hasty. The army will also examine the decision to launch mortars, which are known to be inaccurate.

'Tension to last for weeks'
Palestinian terrorists responded by firing a rocket towards Ashkelon and a mortar at the Ashkelon Beach Regional Council. There were no reports of injury or damage in either attack.
A few hours later the Israeli Air Force launched an attack on an Islamic Jihad terror cell Israel claims was responsible for a recent Grad attack on Beersheba. Four terrorists were killed in the strike. Shortly thereafter Palestinians launched another Qassam rocket, which landed south of Ashkelon. No one was hurt.
IDF officials estimated that the surge of confrontations with terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip will continue over the next few weeks. They noted, however, that Hamas has no interest in significant, long-term escalation of the situation and stressed that the attack on Israel are initiated by other terror groups, such as Islamic Jihad.
The IDF Southern Command instructed Gaza vicinity residents to stay on high alert, fearing that more rockets will be fired towards the region overnight. (via)

A terror attack was committed in Jerusalem Wednesday afternoon as an explosion was heard and many people injured near the Jerusalem Convention Center at around 3 pm.

The Magen David Adom rescue services declared that at least 20 victims were on the scene and ordered everyone in the area to clear out.

A Ynet reader wrote in a Red Mail: "A loud blast was heard in the center of Jerusalem. After a minute many sirens could be heard."

Blast caused by explosive device placed next to telephone pole; three people seriously wounded; entrance to the city has been closed.

A bomb exploded Wednesday at a crowded bus stop outside the International Convention Center in Jerusalem, just opposite the central bus station. A 59-year-old woman was killed and at least 30 people were wounded in the incident, three of them seriously.

All of the casualties have been evacuated to the Hadassah Hospital in Ein Karem. The Magen David Adom emergency services said that there were no fatalities.

The blast could be heard throughout Jerusalem and blew out the windows of bus No. 74, traveling from Givat Shaul to Har Homa. The explosive device was apparently hidden in a bag next to a telephone pole.

An eyewitness in the area at the time of the explosion told Haaretz that she heard a loud blast close to the central bus station and second later sirens began to wail and security forces rushed to the scene.

Meir Hagid, one of the bus drivers, said he heard a loud explosion as he drove by the site, located near the main entrance to Jerusalem and its central bus station.

"I heard the explosion in the bus stop," he said. He halted his vehicle and people got off. He said nobody in his bus was hurt.

Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovich told Channel 2 that the bomb was about one to two kilograms (four pounds) and was planted in a small bag on the sidewalk. He said security services were on alert for additional attacks.

The entrance to the city has been closed. Security forces were combing the area for other suspicious packages or objects.

A Channel 2 reporter said that the Palestinian Red Crescent contacted the emergency services to offer assistance in evacuating the wounded.

The bombing occurred just hours after Gaza militants fired two Grad-type Katyusha rocket at the southern city of Be'er Sheva and a barrage of mortar shells on the western Negev.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu canceled his scheduled trip to Moscow in the wake of the Jerusalem bombing.

Jerusalem has been hit by a number of terror attacks over the last few years, two of them involving tractor drivers that ploughed down a central street.

In the first incident in July 2008, a bulldozer driver hit a bus, pedestrian and cars before he was neutralized by a soldier and civilian who mounted his vehicle and overtook him and then shot and killed him.

The second attack took place three weeks later. Twenty-four people were injured in the attack, one of which moderately to critically wounded. The terrorist hit five cars before he was shot by a civilian and an IDF military border guard officer that were at the scene of the attack.

Three months later, 19 people were injured - two of them critically and four moderately -when an East Jerusalem resident veered off the street onto the sidewalk near the Old City of Jerusalem and crashed into pedestrians. Most of the pedestrians were soldiers. An officer among the group open fire and killed the terrorist.

The capital suffered dozens of suicide bombings that targeted buses and restaurants during the second Palestinian uprising last decade. Jerusalem last experienced a suicide bombing in 2004.
