Libyan troops troops loyal to Muammar Gaddafi launched counteroffensive attacks against a number of rebel-held towns yesterday as the uprising intensified into open warfare.
In Libya's Ras Lanuf, which is home to an important oil refinery, the fighting has been particularly heavy, rebels there say the town remains in their hands.
Al Jazeera's Jacky Rowland is there and has been talking to the rebels.

Libyan state television has broadcast an appearance by leader Muammar Gaddafi before crowds in Tripoli's Green Square.
Pro-government supporters also rallied in the capital on Sunday.
Pictures have also emerged of fighting in the Libyan town of Misurata.
Opposition fighters also say they have repelled an attack by government forces, including tanks and artillery.
At least 18 people were killed.

Here's a map of cities in Libya that have so far played a major role in the country's uprising, a few of which have witnessed some the worst fighting in recent weeks such as Az Zawiyah, Brega and Toruk.
Ras Lanuf, Ajdabiya and Benghazi are all in the hands of anti-Gaddafi rebels, while Tripoli, the capital, and Sirte remain under Gaddafi's control.

NEW YORK - De topman van de Verenigde Naties heeft de Libische regering zondag overgehaald om een team toe te laten dat de humanitaire situatie in Tripoli gaat vaststellen. VN-topman Ban Ki-moon benoemde de Jordaanse oud-minister Abdelilah Al-Khatib als zijn speciale gezant hiervoor. Saif Al Arab schijnt van München waar ie woont naar Parijs gevlucht te zijn (staat in onderstaand artikel). Die moet Frankrijk onmiddelijk oppakken. Maar dat gebeurt niet omdat we mietjes zijn dankzij onze rechtsstaten in Europa.quote:

Ik ben het er mee eens, het is alleen niet toegestaan. Zwitserland gijzelt ook geen Libiërs in Zwitserland. Gaddafi weet dat en ondanks dat hij de EU meer nodig heeft dan wij hem, kan hij gewoon alles maken om dingen gedaan te krijgen. Zwitserland heeft er nog nachtmerries van.quote:

Als dit weer goed afgelopen is, blijft de EU gewoon weer handel doen met en in Libië. Als een zoon van Gaddafi ergens weer slecht wordt behandel, dan gijzelt papa gewoon weer een burger van dat land die in Libië aanwezig is.
Dat doen wij zeker ja, maar juridisch gezien kan je hem gewoon niet oppakken. Waar wil je hem voor oppakken? Het is hier geen Libië. Het zou geweldig zijn als het kon, want dan heb je een zeer goede stok om Gaddafi mee terug te slaan maar het kan gewoon niet.quote:

Een AIVD kan die jongen wel oppakken en het zou een zeer goede stok zijn om Gaddafi mee terug te slaan. Echter is die jongen niet perse verantwoordelijk voor wat zn vader op zn kerfstok heeft, sommige zonen inmiddels duidelijk wel en dat zal ook naar buiten komen als Gaddafi dit verliest. Die jongen is misschien ook doodsbang en ziet dat de rest van zn familie wellicht sterft in Libië, hij blijft dan over.

Some reporters returned, but hotel staff had not.

Gaan ze er weer op af 
Hopelijk nemen ze Sirte snel in, dat gaat het moreel aan de kant van Khadaffi harde klappen geven. Aan de andere kant heb ik zo het gevoel dat men daar nog meer dan elders zal vechten tot de dood, en het een van de laatste bolwerken zal zijn die veroverd gaat worden.
Hopelijk nemen ze Sirte snel in, dat gaat het moreel aan de kant van Khadaffi harde klappen geven. Aan de andere kant heb ik zo het gevoel dat men daar nog meer dan elders zal vechten tot de dood, en het een van de laatste bolwerken zal zijn die veroverd gaat worden.

Libya: Special Forces Saga Was No Conspiracy
The saga surrounding the eight special forces soldiers freed by rebels should be viewed as an embarrassing cock-up rather than a conspiracy.
It is entirely normal for the Foreign Office and MI6 to try and establish communication with rebel forces.
What is abnormal is that they failed to let them know they were coming.
There will inevitably be speculation that they were on some different, more clandestine type of mission.
But this was an overt operation, in broad daylight, using a helicopter.
If this was some type of 'black op' it would have involved arrival by sea and then movement by foot.
We've got money that belongs to the Libyan people and (the Foreign Office) are going to need to know who they're going to release that to.

The weapons being carried by the special forces there were not markedly different to those they would carry during normal operations.
Those on the mission will be well versed with assessing potential humanitarian crises.
Although that may not be the situation at present, this is a desert climate with two and a half million foreign workers who may suddenly want to get out, so a humanitarian crisis may be imminent.
Concern also persists within the intelligence community that Colonel Gaddafi still has weapons of mass destruction at his disposal, notably sulphur and mustard gas.
The rebels are adamant they do not want foreign help, as they do not want Gaddafi to exploit this help to claim this is a Western-inspired uprising rather than an organic explosion of anger.

2:02pm: The Arab League supports the creation of a military no-fly zone over Libya to protect civilians, the French foreign ministry has told the AFP news agency. On Sunday, French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe held talks in Paris with Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa.
1:54pm: Mr Gheriani also told Reuters that there were almost 17,000 rebel fighters out there in Ajdabiya and beyond, but they are scattered.
1:53pm: A spokesman for the rebel National Libyan Council has warned that Col Gaddafi could seek to destroy Libyas oil industry if there is no foreign military intervention soon. The West needs to move or this crazy guy will do something to the oilfields. He is like a wounded wolf. If the West does not intervene with tactical air strikes he could put the oilfields out of commission for a long time, Mustafa Gheriani told the Reuters news agency.
1:44pm: There has been a sharp increase in the number of North African migrants arriving on the Italian island of Lampedusa. Eleven boats carrying around 1,000 people reached Lampedusa overnight, and others have been sighted approaching the small island. Facilities there are being seriously over-stretched its reception centre only has beds for 850 people, and the authorities have restarted airlifts to move the migrants to the Italian mainland. Most of them are said to come from Tunisia. The influx has been increasing since the overthrow of President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali in January, and the beginning of the uprising in Libya last month.
1:37pm: The Reuters news agency is also now reporting that a government warplane has launched an air strike in the eastern oil port town of Ras Lanuf. The jet fired two rockets at a checkpoint on the eastern outskirts, rebel fighter Mokhtar Dobrug said. There were no casualties.

Weve been trying to get people through the borders, especially at the Tunisian end, but unfortunately thats been closed. We have had contacts with people who are able to use smuggling routes. That is costing a lot of money and is also very, very dangerous. The Libyan authorities, as in Gaddafis men, are not allowing people in with supplies, he explained.
1:25pm: Dr Ahmed Sewehli is a Libyan psychiatrist who has given up his job in England to help the medical community back in Libya. He told the BBC World Service that Misratas hospital was struggling to cope with the number of casualties. Unfortunately, there are not enough ventilators in the hospital to cope with the severely injured, and there is a shortage of anaesthetic agents, he said.
1:23pm: A rebel spokesman in Misrata, Mohammed Benrasali, told the BBC that there had been an eight-hour battle. Seven tanks entered the city supported by about 25 vehicle-mounted machine-guns. Three of the tanks made their way all the way to the town centre, where they were trapped in one of the squares and there was really heavy fighting. There was carnage and destruction.
