Wii owners have already checked August 19, 2011 on their calendars, day output RPG Xenoblade Chronicles. Some of you may have even ordered the limited edition. Well just imagine that Nintendo, the editor, we prepared a nice surprise with the presence of a 200-page artbook containing previously unseen footage, a must for fans with collectionnite. The problem is that this beautiful book is only available in 1000 copies and can be retrieved by typing in the code that came with the limited edition of the game on the official website of Nintendo. This indicates that we must already have received. So we have to be patient and pray for the game early enough to register on the site in time.
quote:So, in anticipation of the European release, I fired up my import copy again. If you've seen a few trailers, chances are you've seen a beautiful vista with a huge waterfall, complete with a rainbow, far in the distance. Just for shits and giggles, I wanted to know if you can actually go there...
Well, turns out you can. It's very far and it takes ages, you have to swim and the current gets quite strong the closer you get, but you'll eventually reach it. No invisible wall or anything. It's huge. So huge, in fact, that you can't really appreciate it anymore once you get there. And there's absolutely nothing there. Except for the waterfall, of course. At first, I was kinda disappointed. I expected a landmark, or at least an achievement for swimming all the way out, but no - absolutely nothing. Then I realized that there's actually nothing to be disappointed about: Swimming all the way takes forever and is really boring, so any associated achievement would have been a pain in the ass. I swam there because I wanted to see if it's possible, not to get an achievement after all. And it is possible. That, in itself, is pretty damn cool.
So, in short: If you can see something, you can get there. But if reaching a certain place doesn't seem worthwhile, it probably isn't.
PS: Also, this game would blow minds in 3D. You don't really understand how huge some environments and structures are unless you stand right in front of them, at which point they become so incredibly huge that you can't really appreciate their size anymore.

quote:This video shows an almost complete map that didn't make it into the final game, except for a brief appearance in a cutscene. I recorded the video using an emulator, but this map runs fine (even better) on my actual Wii console.
I entered this map by switching around Hienter Graveyard and this beta map in the map table file. The game has to be patched for this, there is no known cheat code or glitch to access this location in an unmodified game.

Reggie discusses localizing games like Xenoblade
Xenoblade. The Last Story. Pandora's Tower. To much of the gaming world, these three titles are nothing more than the latest or upcoming releases for Wii. For North American gamers, however, these three games won't see release. This controversial move by Nintendo of America has resulted in massive protests, organized in part by "Operation Rainfall," a group of fans dedicated to getting these games in stores.
Because of the timing of the movement and Nintendo's subsequent statement that these titles would not be localized here in the North American territories, many wondered if the publisher would ever give a substantial comment on the situation.
Today I asked Nintendo of America president and COO, Reggie Fils-Aime about the situation. As expected, Fils-Aime didn't have anything new to announce, and wasn't willing to get into details on any specific titles. However, he did offer up one interesting comment.
"We will be watching very closely what happens in Europe," Fils-Aime told me. "Certainly if there are business opportunities and positive consumer uptake from some of those titles, that will be great data for us to consider as we look at what to do with these titles."
It's by no means any sort of confirmation, but it affirms that Nintendo of America does have its eye on some of these missing games. It also means the company is focused on whether or not Nintendo fans will truly support the software they say they will. Does Wii still have enough of a hardcore following to support lengthy RPGs like Xenoblade and Last Story? We'll find out soon enough.
