Diverse media hier meldde afgelopen weekend dat Mugabe (Zimbabwe) een elite eenheid heeft gestuurd naar Libya om Khadaffi te beschermen.
Is dit ook bevestigd door enigszins betrouwbare media of weet iemand hier meer over toevallig?

1. Uit het bericht zelf:
"De PKK liet weten dat het niet van plan is Turkse doelen aan te vallen. De opstandelingen zouden voor een defensieve strategie kiezen."
2. Daarnaast voert de regerende AK-partij van Erdogan onderhandelingen met de gevangen leider van de PKK, Öcalan, om in ruil voor meer rechten definitief vrede te sluiten. Tijdens die onderhandelingen probeert Erdogan de gecentraliseerde eenheidsstaat vast te houden, terwijl de Koerden meer autonomie en culturele rechten eisen. Volgens sommige geruchten zouden de onderhandelingen in een ver gevorderd stadium zijn. In Noord-Irak is men al begonnen met het opleiden van leraren die over vijf jaar Koerdische lessen zullen verzorgen. Dit perspectief toomt de onvrede die onder sommige Koerden bestaat.
3. Alle andere politieke partijen in Turkije en een meerderheid van de bevolking zijn pertinent tegen onderhandelingen en pleiten voor de confrontatie. 'De staat onderhandelt niet met een terreurbeweging', stelt men. Over een half jaar zijn er weer verkiezingen in Turkije. Als de Koerdische rebellen te hard van leer trekken, bestaat het risico dat Erdogan zijn meerderheid in het parlement verliest. Momenteel stevent Erdogan op een absolute monsterzege van zo'n 48% van de stemmen af, maar dat kan zo voorbij zijn als de PKK-guerilla's Turkse soldaten en politieagenten vermoorden, of nog erger: als miljoenen Koerden de straat op gaan, Turkije niet erkennen en hun eigen staat uitroepen. Dat zou echt het onmiddelijke einde van Erdogan zijn, wat ook niet in het belang van de PKK is omdat de alternatieven van Erdogan veel nationalistischer zijn. Het is de PKK er alles aan gelegen om het Erdogan niet te moeilijk te maken, én andersom.
4. Hoewel veel Koerden de PKK steunen, en (al dan niet op de lange termijn) een aparte staat willen, is een nog veel groter deel van de Koerdische bevolking voor meer culturele rechten binnen de staat Turkije. Tijdens de laatste verkiezingen kreeg de politieke tak van de PKK zo'n 6 % van de stemmen, terwijl Turkije voor zo'n 20% uit Koerden bestaat. De overige stemmen gingen bijna allemaal naar de AK-partij.
5. Zelfs de meest radicale PKK-ers erkennen dat Koerdische onafhankelijkheid momenteel niet in het belang van Koerden is, omdat het gebied waar zij wonen onderontwikkeld is. Een tijdelijke eenheid met culturele rechten, totdat de bevolking hogeropgeleid is, de infrastructuur verbetert en het aantal fabrieken toeneemt, is zelfs de wens van de meest nationalistische Pan-Koerdisten.
6. Hoe moet de verklaring van de PKK dan gelezen worden? Naar mijn bescheiden mening stelt die verklaring niet zoveel voor. Men tracht tijdens de onderhandelingen Erdogan bang te maken, om zoveel mogelijk concessies binnen te halen, maar de PKK weet dondersgoed dat zonder Erdogan de Koerden keihard aangepakt zullen worden. Het is dus een onderhandelingsstrategie die weinig gewicht in de schaal zal leggen.
Daarnaast speelt ook mee dat de PKK tijdens de wintermaanden een staakt het vuren afkondigd, omdat de Koerdische bergen dan akelig koud en lastig begaanbaar zijn, om tijdens de lente weer te beginnen met de guerillastrijd/ het terrorisme. Dat gebeurt ieder jaar weer geloof ik.

President Robert Mugabe has sent troops to Libya to defend Colonel Gadaffi, his long-standing ally and financier.
Early last Tuesday morning, several hundred serving and retired Zimbabwean soldiers and a handful of air force pilots flew from Harare to Libya on a chartered flight to join Gadaffis increasingly desperate battle to stay in power.
Zimbabwean state intelligence sources said some of the troops were from the commando regiment; others were from the Fifth Brigade that was once trained by North Korea and is infamous for crushing a rebellion in Matabeleland in the early 1980s in which 20,000 civilians were killed.
The Zimbabweans join other African mercenaries from the Ivory Coast, Chad and Mauritania who are fighting on behalf of Gadaffi in Tripoli against a popular uprising that has seized the east of the country.
The Zimbabwean force was sent in a secret arrangement made between Gadaffi, Mugabe and General Constantine Chiwenga, the chief of the armed forces and a staunch Mugabe loyalist.
British government officials said yesterday they were aware of the deal, which has been the subject of an internal intelligence report.
They said they believed that Gadaffi might seek refuge in Zimbabwe if he decides he cannot survive in power.
There is an intense closeness between him and Mugabe. Zimbabwe is one country Gadaffi might choose to go to, a Whitehall insider said.
The deal to lend Gadaffi his troops was so secret that even Emmerson Mnangagwa, the powerful minister of defence and a contender to succeed Mugabe, who has just turned 87, was not involved.
On Wednesday, Mnangagwa balked at answering a parliamentary question put by an opposition MP about reports that Zimbabwean soldiers were in Libya.
He would neither confirm nor deny the report, saying he had no mandate in his duties as defence minister to investigate happenings in another African country.
Mugabe has a history of military intervention in Africa. In 1997, without consultation, he sent his troops into the war-torn Congo to fight against rebels backed by Rwanda and Uganda, a war in which several million people died. The Zimbabwean military intervention was rewarded with choice pickings from Congos mineral resources, particularly diamonds and gold, which enriched many of the top military officers around Mugabe.
Gadaffi is one of Mugabes staunchest political allies on the African continent. A few years ago, he contributed millions of dollars of oil supplies that saved the Zimbabwean economy from complete collapse and he has invested in property. Recently his son, Saadi, was granted a concession to mine for diamonds in the Marange diamond field, one of the richest in the world.
After Gadaffi, in power since his 1969 military coup, Mugabe is Africas longest-surviving leader. The popular uprisings that have swept away dictators in Tunisia and Egypt and now threaten Gadaffi, are being avidly followed in Zimbabwe. Commentators are asking whether it is possible to have a revolution against Mugabe.
Most say it is not. But the uprisings inspired a march against Mugabe on Tuesday under the theme power in numbers to remove dictatorship. Taking no chances, Mugabe had many of the organisers arrested last week.

Statement by the Office of the Prosecutor on situation in Libya
United Nations Security Council Resolution 1970 (2011) provides jurisdiction to the International Criminal Court over the situation in Libya.
The Office of the Prosecutor has to now decide whether an investigation into alleged crimes against humanity committed in Libya since 15 February 2011 should be opened.
The Office is currently assessing allegations of widespread or systematic attacks against the civilian population as well as other additional legal requisites established by the Rome Statute.
The Office is liaising with relevant organisations including the Arab League, the African Union, the UN Council on Human Rights, the UN High Commission for Human Rights and the UN Secretariat, as well as with States, in order to collect information required.
The Office of the Prosecutor is interested in receiving footage and images to confirm the alleged crimes. Additionally the Office is liaising with Libyan officials and army officers to receive information about the identity of authorities with command and control over the organizations allegedly involved in the crimes.
The Office of the Prosecutor has to act impartially. The next step will be to decide whether to open an investigation, and eventually collect evidence and request an arrest warrant against those identified as the most responsible. The judges will then decide based on the evidence. In accordance with its mandate to end impunity to contribute to the prevention of future crimes, the Office will act without delay.

De EU-landen zijn het in Brussel eens geworden over sancties tegen Libië. Er komt een wapenembargo en de Libische leiders worden niet meer toegelaten in lidstaten van de Europese Unie. Ook worden hun tegoeden bij Europese banken bevroren.
De VN-Veiligheidsraad kondigde in het weekeinde vergelijkbare sancties aan. De Europese maatregelen gaan op een aantal punten verder dan die van de VN.
De EU levert ook geen producten meer aan Libië die ingezet kunnen worden tegen demonstranten, zoals nachtkijkers, munitie en traangas. De Europese Unie voert de maatregelen zo snel mogelijk in.
De Duitse minister Guido Westerwelle van Buitenlandse Zaken heeft bij de VN-Mensenrechtenraad in Genève voorgesteld om alle betalingen aan Libië zestig dagen te bevriezen.

I interviewed Col. Moammar Gadhafi this morning, when he told me he cannot step down because he is not a president or king, and claimed there have been no demonstrations in the streets of Libya's capital.
"My people love me. They would die for me," he said.
ABC conducted the interview with BBC and the Sunday Times of London.
Gadhafi refused to acknowledge that any demonstrations had taken place in the streets of Tripoli, and he denied ever using force against his people. Gadhafi blamed al Qaeda for encouraging young people to seize arms from military installations.
Gadhafi, who has ruled Libya for 42 years, said he felt betrayed by the United States.
"I'm surprised that we have an alliance with the west to fight al Qaeda, and now that we are fighting terrorists they have abandoned us," he said. "Perhaps they want to occupy Libya."
Gadhafi called President Obama a "good man" but said that he might have been given "misinformation."
"The statements I have heard from him must have come from someone else," Gadhafi said. "America is not the international police of the world."

Zimbabwean army helping Gaddafi in Libya
Speculation that members of the Zimbabwe National Army are in Libya to help prop up cornered dictator Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, has gained momentum. This follows Zimbabwes Defence Minister Emmerson Mnangagwa (pictured) avoiding giving a straight answer to a question posed in Parliament.
With the eastern part of Libya having fallen to anti-Gaddafi protesters, its being reported that mercenaries from several African countries, including Zimbabwe, are putting up a stand in the west of the country, including the capital Tripoli, on behalf of Gaddafi. They are reportedly gunning down unarmed civilians at random and Arab TV channel Al Jazeera said that Zimbabwe was helping to provide mercenaries, along with Chad and other African countries.
In Parliament on Wednesday MDC-T MP and Chief Whip, Innocent Gonese, asked Mnangagwa to respond to reports that soldiers from Zimbabwe are involved. Instead of giving a straight answer Mnangagwa said that there are mercenaries who are African and are in Libya I have no mandate in my duty as Minister of Defence to investigate activities happening in another African country.
Meanwhile its being reported that Gaddafi is weighing up his options in terms of which country to flee to for sanctuary. Zimbabwe is emerging as a firm favourite, with London-based Libyan political activist Guma el-Gamaty, telling the Australian ABC news channel that "quite reliable sources" believe Gaddafi is readying to flee his country and heading to Zimbabwe.
Gaddafi's own private plane is loaded with gold bullion and lots of hard currency, mainly dollars, and is preparing to flee to Zimbabwe to stay there with his friend Robert Mugabe. We think this could happen very shortly because the (UN) Security Council is threatening to impose a no-fly zone and we think that Gaddafi will try to escape before this no-fly zone is imposed, Guma el-Gamaty said.
Mugabe is no stranger to giving sanctuary to murderous dictators. Former Ethiopian dictator Mengistu Haile Mariam was offered a safe haven in Zimbabwe, despite being sentenced to death by an Ethiopian court for crimes against humanity. He remains happily ensconced in his villa in the suburb of Gunhill, outside Harare, to this day.
Major Protais Mpiranya, a Rwandan army officer accused of ordering the murder of that countrys Prime Minister and the Belgian soldiers who protected her, is also said to be hiding in Zimbabwe. Mpiranya, a Hutu extremist who formerly led the Presidential Guard in Rwanda, is wanted for genocide and crimes against humanity by the UN war crimes tribunal.

Zimbabwe is emerging as a firm favourite, with London-based Libyan political activist Guma el-Gamaty, telling the Australian ABC news channel that "quite reliable sources" believe Gaddafi is readying to flee his country and heading to Zimbabwe.
Gaddafi's own private plane is loaded with gold bullion and lots of hard currency, mainly dollars, and is preparing to flee to Zimbabwe to stay there with his friend Robert Mugabe. We think this could happen very shortly because the (UN) Security Council is threatening to impose a no-fly zone and we think that Gaddafi will try to escape before this no-fly zone is imposed, Guma el-Gamaty said.
Mugabe is no stranger to giving sanctuary to murderous dictators. Former Ethiopian dictator Mengistu Haile Mariam was offered a safe haven in Zimbabwe, despite being sentenced to death by an Ethiopian court for crimes against humanity. He remains happily ensconced in his villa in the suburb of Gunhill, outside Harare, to this day.
Major Protais Mpiranya, a Rwandan army officer accused of ordering the murder of that countrys Prime Minister and the Belgian soldiers who protected her, is also said to be hiding in Zimbabwe. Mpiranya, a Hutu extremist who formerly led the Presidential Guard in Rwanda, is wanted for genocide and crimes against humanity by the UN war crimes tribunal.
