AJE 1:19pm Antiquities Minister Zahi Hawass says eight major artefacts, including two gilded wooden statues of Tutankhamun, were stolen when looters broke into the Egyptian Museum on the "Day of Rage", January 28. Hawass earlier said the heads of two mummies had been ripped off and dozens of pieces damaged.

Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, voormalig secretaris-generaal van de NAVO, vindt het jammer dat de Europese Unie geen rol van betekenis heeft gespeeld bij de recente ontwikkelingen in Egypte.
Dat zei De Hoop Scheffer vandaag in het televisieprogramma Buitenhof. Volgens hem hielden de Amerikanen een stevige vinger aan de pols, maar schitterde de EU door afwezigheid.
"De opstelling van Europa was inconsequent", schetste De Hoop Scheffer "vanuit zijn leunstoel". "De grote landen als Duitsland en Frankrijk deden het zelf wel. EU-buitenlandchef Catherine Ashton en 'Brussel' stonden daardoor, tot mijn grote spijt, aan de zijlijn."
Die inconsequente opstelling kan Europa volgens hem nog goedmaken. "Als Egypte het wil, en ik onderstreep als Egypte het wil, dan zou Europa kunnen helpen met bijvoorbeeld het schrijven van een grondwet of het opzetten van politieke partijen. Maar politiek was Europa tot dusver afwezig."

Ik typ die toespraken op AJE mee voor hier, zodat ik eruit kan citeren voor nieuwsberichten, maar als ik het toch doe kan het net zo goed zoals jullie het willen. Dus heb je het liever in het Engels of in het Nederlands, of maakt het niet zo veel uit.
