Algerians hit the streets
Thousands (if not tens of thousands) have taken to the streets in Algiers. Police have arrested and beaten so many demonstrators that jails are full and prisoners are being held in police station corridors or released. Of yet no deaths have been reported. The turn out has dashed most analysts expectations: most expected far less. But outside the capital and Oran turnout is less impressive. Locals in Annaba say a small demonstration was broken up early and the city is prepared for a happy Eid al-Mawild; Constantines several hundred protestors were sent home by the police. Algiers and Oran are Algerias two largest cities. Demonstrators have taken over the small 1 May and 1 November Squares in Algiers and Oran, respectively. Demonstrations have been reported in Tizi Ouzou and other parts of Kabylia. One of the Algiers demonstrations key organizers and a leader of the CNCD Fadil Boumala has been arrested. One wonders whether the arrest of the demonstrations leaders will put down the revolt. The major factor to watch is whether or nor civilians start dying. The turning points in Tunisia and Egypt were when demonstrators were killed by the security forces. The Algerians avoided this in December and January and seem to be relying on mass arrests (in the main cities tens of protestors have been arrested). Thus far it seems the Algerians will need greater numbers to make a major impact on the swarms of police, political establishment and the limitations of the CNCDs organizing methods. Leger doet daar bijna openlijk aan martelen, das al jaren bekend.
Nu al hulde aan die mensen die vandaag de straat hebben opgezocht.
Las ergens dat de politie daar vrouwen als schild gebruiken tegen de protesters

Internet providers were shut down and Facebook accounts deleted across Algeria on Saturday as thousands of pro-democracy demonstrators were arrested in violent street demonstrations.
Plastic bullets and tear gas were used to try and disperse large crowds in major cities and towns, with 30,000 riot police taking to the streets in Algiers alone.
There were also reports of journalists being targeted by state-sponsored thugs to stop reports of the disturbances being broadcast to the outside world.
But it was the government attack on the internet which was of particular significance to those calling for an end to President Abdelaziz Boutifleka's repressive regime.
Protesters mobilising through the internet were largely credited with bringing about revolutions in Egypt and Tunisia.
"The government doesn't want us forming crowds through the internet," said Rachid Salem, of Co-ordination for Democratic Change in Algeria.
"Security forces are armed to the teeth out on the street, and they're also doing everything to crush our uprising on the internet. Journalists, and especially those with cameras, are being taken away by the police." President Hosni Mubarak had tried to shut down internet service providers during 18 days of protest before stepping down as Egyptian leader on Friday.
Mostafa Boshashi, head of the Algerian League for Human Rights, said: "Algerians want their voices to be heard too. They want democratic change.
"At the moment people are being prevented from travelling to demonstrations. The entrances to cities like Algeria have been blocked."
At least five people were killed in similar protests in Algeria in January, when the Interior Ministry said 1000 people were arrested.
On Saturday at least 500 had been arrested by early evening in Algiers alone, with hundreds more in Annaba, Constantine and Oran taking part in the so-called February 12 Revolution.
"The police station cells are overflowing," said Sofiane Hamidouche, a demonstrator in Annaba.
"There are running battles taking place all over the city. It's chaos. As night falls the situation will get worse."
Algeria has the eighth largest reserves of natural gas in the world, and is also oil-rich, but its youthful population suffers mass unemployment, a chronic lack of housing, and widespread poverty. Political corruption is also endemic.

" After about three hours, hundreds of people left the square quietly, with police opening up gaps in their cordon to let them through. Some 200 young men from a poor neighbourhood nearby stayed on the square. Some threw objects at police."
5:55pm Said Sadi, head of the opposition group Rally for Culture and Democracy tells AFP that that human rights activist Ali Yahia Abdelnour, 90, was "manhandled by the police". Sadi said that the protest was not orchestrated.
"It wasn't even an organised demonstration. It was spontaneous. It was an explosion of joy. "

Het lijkt nu een mooi moment voor andere landen om door te gaan nu, maar eigenlijk denk ik niet dat het zo werkt. Elk land opzich heeft gewoon een eigen moment nodig. Elk land heeft een hele andere situatie en misschien is de tijd nog niet rijp voor sommige landen. Ik denk bijvoorbeeld dat het aantal mensen wat toegang heeft tot internet heel belangrijk is voor dit soort dingen. Maar er zijn ook andere factoren waar algarije misschien pas over een tiental jaar aan voldoet voor een revolutie. We zullen zien

Ik ben me nog steeds aan het inlezen over Algerije.
Land is groot, maar heeft niet zoveel inwoners als Egypte. 2 grote steden,veel landbouw en olie en gas. Als ik het goed begrijp gaat dat laatste naar Amerika, en van de landbouwproducten is de grootste afzetter Italië.
Ook in dit land een gedeelte analfabeet. Veel boeren en die gaan nou eenmaal niet naar school. De kinderen springen bij zodra ze kunnen lopen en nemen de bedrijven over.
Maar ook weer een grote werkeloosheid onder een groot gedeelte studerende jeugd.
En ik begin langzamerhand te denken dat die werkelijk de toekomst hebben zoals het spreekwoord luidt.
Het is internet wat mensen afstompt, maar het is net zo goed internet wat mensen kennis geeft. En het cirkeltje is rond. Want kennis is macht.

Algeria typically has about 135 routed network prefixes in the global routing table, and our data show that they are all still routed and relatively stable. Traceroutes inbound confirm that sites hosted in these prefixes are still alive, and spot checks of websites hosted in Algeria show that most are up and functioning normally.
It's possible, according to Renesys, that there are some Internet blocks not visible to outside the country, similar to Iranian-style throttling, but that can not be confirmed at this time.
The Telegraph first reported that Algeria shut down the Internet and Facebook today in response to mounting protests. Social media website Mashable also picked up the report and led with it on its front page Saturday evening.
