A member of the "Committee of Wise Men" said the main demand of protesters in Tahrir Square was for President Hosni Mubarak to step down and transfer his authority to Vice-President Omar Suleiman.

The committee was formed as Nobel Prize winner Ahmed Zeweil called for negotiations with the Egyptian regime on the transfer of power. The committee includes 18 intellectuals and businessmen, including Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa, constitutional law expert Yehia al-Gamal, former ambassadors Nabil al-Arabi and Nabil Fahmy, publisher Ibrahim al-Moalem, former information minister Mansour Hassan and musician Ammar al-Sheriey.

Al-Moalem, vice-president of the International Publishers Association, said that Egypts young people had begun an unprecedented revolution in Egyptian and world history.

"They refuse dictatorship," he said. "They want a decent life."

Al-Moalem explained that young people had clear and legitimate objectives. Their steadfastness since the beginning of protests on 25 January encouraged the masses to take to streets, he said.

What we want now is to fulfill the young peoples demands and keep Egypt safe and secure, said al-Moalem, noting that the Committee of Wise Men had communicated with VP Omar Suleiman and newly-appointed prime minister Ahmed Shafiq.

Uh, nee? De voornaamste eis is dat Mubarak weg gaat, niet met daarbij de voorwaarde dat hij de macht afstaat aan zijn net benoemde vazal.

Mubarak gaat wel weg, en snel ook. Zijn uitspraak dat hij niet vertrekt omdat Egypte anders in chaos zou wegzinken dient alleen om de knieval wat meer euforisch gewicht te geven. En vervolgens zit hij zijn levensdagen uit op een of ander tropisch eiland, op kosten van Uncle Sam. Misschien wordt hij nog een paar keer in de pers opgevoerd, op weg naar een of ander tribunaal waar het maar nooit tot een veroordeling komt, en in de tussentijd schrijft hij zijn autobiografie.

Ik vind dat Obama het prima aanpakt. Dit zijn Egyptische zaken. En de Egyptische burger laat overduidelijk zien dat ze het zelf aanpakken.
Buitenstaanders kunnen alleen maar laten weten dat we achter ze staan. En dat wordt dan ook duidelijk gezegd. Dat mubarak niet luistert, komt omdat het een vervelende, zure, dementerende oude man is, die niet voor rede vatbaar is.

Ik heb ook zo'n gevoel dat dit vannacht nog heel erg uit de hand kan lopen.

Obama's antwoord op een vraag over Egypte:

"The future is in hands of Egypt, not us who is going to determine that.
In light of what's happened the last two weeks, going back to old ways is not going to work.

Suppression isn't, engaging violence isn't, neither is attempting to shut down information flows. The only thing that will work is moving in an orderly transition process that engages all parties and leads to democratic (niet gehoord ) and free elections and a representative government. I believe president Mubarak cares about his country and he's proud and a patriot. I told him he needs to consult those who are around him, consult those in his goverment and listen to the voices of the Egyptian people. The transmission must be orderly, meaningful and serious.

I believe that he's (Mubarak) already said he is not going to run for re-election. This is someone who's beenin power for a very long time. It's a psychological break for him and it's most important for him to ask himself and the government to ask itself and the opposition to ask 'how are we going to make the transition ( niet snel genoeg )

Continuing suppression of the opposition is not going to work. Once the president announced he is not going to be running again and his turn is up relatively shortly the key question is 'how do I leave a legacy behind that... ( )' "

Ik heb het idee dat er binnen 24 uur iets gaat gebeuren. Het is wel duidelijk dat er achter de schermen nu machtsstrijd plaatsvindt.

Ja, uiteindelijk moeten de mensen op het plein en de rest in Egypte straks zich de vraag stellen of ze blij zijn met de uitkomst.

Maar da's al zo sinds het begin... hoewel aan het einde van D-day de emoties nogal hoog op kunnen gaan lopen inderdaad, mocht Mubarak niet aftreden...

Vreemd dat nergens de mensen genoemd worden die in het 'Wise Men' committee zitten, zou iemand die op willen zoeken? Ik kan niks vinden. Het is wel interessant om deze mensen te onderzoeken.
