The police driver of Jenson’s vehicle reacted swiftly and, using avoidance techniques, rapidly forced his way through the traffic, taking Jenson and the other occupants of the car immediately away from any danger and back to their hotel.

The Sao Paulo authorities have also acted efficiently and will be providing additional security to transfer Jenson and other senior Vodafone McLaren Mercedes personnel to the Interlagos circuit for Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix.

How the championships can be won in Brazil

The Formula One world heads into tomorrow's Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos in the knowledge that both world championships could be decided, with Fernando Alonso and Red Bull both in a position to put their respective championships beyond reach when the chequered flag falls.

Drivers' championship
As the leader of the standings, Alonso is the only driver to be able to secure the title on Sunday. With an 11-point advantage, he needs to finish either 25 or 26 points clear of his nearest competitor, depending on his finishing position in the race. Either way, Alonso needs to finish on the podium to have any chance of securing the title.

Alonso will win the title if:
• he wins and Webber finishes fifth or lower.

• he finishes second, Webber finishes eighth or lower, Hamilton finishes fourth or lower and Vettel doesn't win.

• he finishes third, Webber finishes 11th or lower, Hamilton finishes fifth or lower and Vettel finishes fourth or lower.

Vettel needs to outscore Alonso to stay in contention, as well as ensure not to lose more than 10 points to Webber and 20 points to Hamilton. Victory for either Alonso, Webber or Hamilton will automatically put Button out of the fight, while victory for Vettel, a non-score for the top three and second place for Button will still keep him in contention by a single point.

Constructors' championship
Red Bull hold a 27-point lead over McLaren in the constructors' championship, meaning they will put the title beyond doubt if they extend their lead by 16 points, and keep Ferrari's gain on them to nine points or less.

As a result, a 1-2 finish for Red Bull would secure their first constructors' championship, regardless of McLaren's fortunes. At the other end of the scale, the worst result with which Red Bull can clinch the crown is with a fifth and a seventh, assuming neither McLaren score points and Ferrari score no more than 24 points.

Mercedes' Michael Schumacher felt he could have qualified higher than eighth at the Brazilian Grand Prix, but lost tyre temperature making way for traffic ahead of his flying lap.

Schumacher looked quick all afternoon and set the second fastest time on intermediate tyres in Q3 before all ten cars swapped to slicks for their final runs. He said his last lap was error-free but the tyres were not up to temperature.

"I am somewhat disappointed as the circumstances today were exactly as I had wished them to be," he said. "I really hoped for more from qualifying but it didn't turn out right for us. I couldn't have gone any quicker on my lap and there were no issues so the only explanation is that my tyres cooled down at the beginning when I had to leave the racing line to let Sebastian and Mark past. It's a shame that it didn't work out better today. Congratulations to Nico Hülkenberg who did a fantastic lap."

Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg failed to make Q3 and will start from 13th on the grid. He blamed Toro Rosso's Sebastien Buemi for holding him up.

"We were on for a good result in qualifying today but on the drying track, the intermediate tyres were only good for one fast lap and I was blocked by Buemi on my lap in Q2," he said. "So that was it for me and it's disappointing to qualify so far down the field when we could have taken advantage of the conditions."

A Sauber spokesperson on Sunday confirmed reports that multiple team engineers were robbed at gunpoint whilst returning to their Sao Paulo hotel on Saturday evening.

The news comes as rumours suggest the future of the Interlagos event is in doubt over the security issue, after the car taking Jenson Button from the track on Saturday narrowly escaped a similar attack by smashing through traffic.

According to German media, the team spokesperson said the Sauber attack involved three engineers.

"They had stopped at a traffic light and were approached by five men.

"One of them had a gun. They stole bags, personal items, mobile phones and cash."

And Brazilian driver Lucas di Grassi told BBC radio that he was mugged for his watch in Sao Paulo recently.
