The competition: the Tata Nano, which costs even less
As one of the cheapest new cars in the world it will have no power steering or anti-lock brakes, metallic paint will not be an option and a radio will cost extra.
But with so few frills and at less than £1,500 for a brand new model, it's also unlikely anyone will bother to steal it.
A new budget run-around, the ULC – or Ultra-Low-Cost vehicle – is being developed by Renault alongside Nissan and Indian firm Bajaj.
It will be up against the 623cc, £1,200 Tata Nano low-emission car, unveiled in January by Indian rival Tata and aimed at low-paid workers and their families.
Although it is short on gadgets and luxury, with a cruising speed of 60mph and 80 miles to the gallon, the ULC could be the perfect city runabout. And it will make Renault's last budget car, the £5,000 Logan, seem like a limo.
It will first be aimed at drivers in developing countries but, unlike the Tata Nano, it could then go on sale in Europe.
The car is still in the design stages and is due to go into production in India in 2011.
A Renault spokesman said: 'The concept is to produce a reliable, solid vehicle at very low cost for Indian families who are still currently all using mopeds.'
