Volcano

Latest information received from the Icelandic Meteorological Office indicates that the explosive activity from the Eyjafjallajökull volcano is continuing, with the ash plume reaching heights of up to around 18,000 ft. The Icelandic Met Office state that there are no signs that the eruption is about to end, with the volcanic eruption remaining dynamic.

Winds are expected to blow from a mainly north or north easterly direction over the next few days, with most of the ash cloud likely to stay over the Atlantic Ocean and close to western parts of the British Isles. As a result NATS continues to advise aircraft about airspace restrictions affecting transatlantic flights, allowing them to cross the Atlantic safely. Recent weather patterns mean that the ash cloud has drifted across some parts of central and southern Europe, leading to disruption.

As the volcanic activity changes, the Met Office will continue to provide frequently updated information to NATS and CAA about the dispersion of the volcanic ash, in line with the new engine criteria set by the CAA and the aviation industry.

Any decisions on airspace closures are the responsibility of CAA and further information on the impacts of this increased activity should be sought from them.

Conditions at eruption site:
Observations from air and web cameras show similar activity to yesterday. In the afternoon there was an increase in explosive activity, giving darker and slightly higher plume.

Seismic tremor:
Slight increase in the lower frequency bands.

Earthquakes:
Sixteen earthquakes were located since yesterday, mostly at depths of 18 – 20 km and magnitude less than Ml 2.

GPS deformation:
Small displacements towards the center of Eyjafjallajökull volcano but irregular oscillations in the vertical component of a station closest to the volcano.

Overall assessment:
No major changes are seen in the activity, but small variation can still be expected. The ash plume increased slightly in the afternoon. Presently there are no indications that the eruption is about to end.

Tephra fallout: Ongoing ashfall since 0600h reported from south of Eyjafjöll, Berjanes, Drangshlíđ and Skarđshlíđ. Ashfall from midnight until morning at Skķgar. The ash is somewhat finer today than yesterday.
Lightning: Twenty lightning were recorded on the ATDnet since last night.
Noises: No reports.

Meltwater:
Low water discharge at Gígjökull.

Conditions at eruption site:
The upper part of the ash cloud and the lower part of Eyjafjallajökull could be seen from the aircraft, the rest was in clouds. The top of the ash cloud was at ~ 5 km / 17.000 ft. No great changes seen in Gígjökull.

Seismic tremor:
Similar to previous days.

Earthquakes:
At around 1600h 4 earthquakes were measured beneath Eyjafjallajökull, all of them were located at shallow depth.

GPS deformation:
Horizontal displacements towards the center of Eyjafjallajökull volcano and subsidence.

Overall assessment:
No major changes are seen in the activity. The ash plume has increased since yesterday. Presently there are no indications that the eruption is about to end.

LONDEN - De IJswolkse aswolk blijft het luchtverkeer in Europa parten spelen. Het luchtruim boven het noorden van Engeland, Noord-Ierland en delen van Ierland zijn zondag (16 mei) dichtgegaan als gevolg van de aswolk. Daardoor zijn verschillende luchthavens dichtgegaan. Dat meldden de Britse en Ierse autoriteiten.

De Ierse luchthavens Sligo, Donegal en Knock zijn dicht, maar luchthaven Belfast International blijft open. Ook de luchthavens van Londen blijven open.

De luchthavens van het Noord-Ierse Belfast blijven nog zeker dicht tot twee uur 's middags (Nederlandse tijd), evenals de luchthaven van het eiland Man. Dublin en Shannon gaan mogelijk later dicht en blijven in ieder geval nog tot die tijd open.

De meteorologische dienst van Reykjavik liet zondag weten, dat de wind zich naar het zuiden gedraaid heeft en opnieuw dikke aswolken richting Europa blaast.

De aswolk zal dinsdag boven Londen hangen, maar drijft vermoedelijk woensdag weer weg, aldus Britse meteorologen tegen de BBC. Mogelijk krijgen luchthavens in het zuidoosten van Engeland de komende dagen ook te kampen met de aswolk.

Britse ministers beslisten zaterdag dat de Britse weerdienst informatie over de situatie in het luchtruim en de invloed van de aswolk tot vijf dagen vooruit moet publiceren.

De aswolken drijven momenteel op 6 tot 8 kilometer hoogte. Bewoners die ten zuiden van de onvermoeibare vulkaan onder de gletsjer Eyjafjallajökull wonen kregen zondag weer te maken met 'asregen'.

De asdeeltjes kunnen funest zijn voor vliegtuigmotoren. Half april gingen grote delen van het Europese luchtruim dagenlang dicht uit vrees voor de as. Dat was na de grote uitbarsting van 14 april van de vulkaan, die nog steeds naweeën heeft.

In Nederland en België worden geen problemen verwacht met het luchtverkeer. Een woordvoerster van Luchtverkeersleiding Nederland heeft dat zondag gezegd.

Volgens het KNMI lijkt er een kleine aswolk richting Nederland te waaien. Maar de luchtverkeersleiders denken dat de as waarschijnlijk geen kwaad kan.

"Het is een klein puntje en het komt waarschijnlijk in een deel van het luchtruim terecht waar geen vliegverkeer is", zegt de woordvoerster. Luchtverkeersleiding Nederland valt onder de verantwoordelijkheid van het ministerie van Verkeer en Waterstaat.

KLM schrapt deel van de vluchten Engeland

AMSTERDAM - KLM schrapt vanaf zondagmiddag 14.00 uur vluchten naar de Engelse bestemmingen Liverpool, Manchester, Humberside en Leeds Bradford. Een woordvoerster van KLM heeft dat bekendgemaakt. KLM sluit niet uit dat later op de dag nog meer vluchten zullen uitvallen.


Voor gedupeerde passagiers wordt zo veel mogelijk een oplossing gezocht, aldus de woordvoerster.

Het uitvallen van de vluchten heeft te maken met de aswolk, afkomstig van de IJslandse vulkaan, die boven delen van Engeland hangt.

Luchtvaartmaatschappijen beslissen elk voor zich of ze hun vluchten annuleren of niet. Volgens een woordvoerster van Schiphol zijn haar geen grote problemen bekend met aankomst dan wel vertrek van vliegtuigen op de nationale luchthaven.

Ze raadt passagiers aan ruim voor vertrek te controleren of hun vluchtschema is aangepast.

The ash cloud from the Eyjafjallajokull eruption is extremely active at the moment and has never been as visible from the Icelandic capital, Reykjavik, according to University of Iceland geophysicist, Magnus Tumi Gudmundsson. The ash is, however, not affecting domestic or international flights in and around Iceland as it has been doing over recent days.


All international and domestic flights have been running as normal today – with the exception of to and from the Westman Islands – and the situation is not predicted to change soon. Air Iceland has pencilled in a flight to the Westman Islands at 09.00 tomorrow morning; but that is subject to change.

Meanwhile, British airspace could close again from tomorrow morning until at least Tuesday due to the volcanic ash, according to Daily Telegraph sources in the Ministry of Transport.

According to the paper’s website, it is likely that airports in Scotland and the Souteast of England will close, along with Irish airports.

The British government has given the Met Office permission to make its five-day ash forecasts public online, replacing the 18-hour forecasts available until now.
