EDIT:
quote:
Ash fall can have serious detrimental effects on agricultural crops and livestock depending mainly on ash thickness, the type and growing condition of a crop, the presence of soluble fluoride on the ash, timing and intensity of subsequent rainfall, condition of pasture and animals prior to ash fall, and availability of uncontaminated feed and water. Fluorine poisoning and death can occur in livestock that graze on ash-covered grass if fluoride is present in high concentrations; it may be advisable to sample and analyze ash or ash-coated vegetation to determine whether this potential hazard exists for livestock in areas covered with ash, even as thin as 1 mm. Livestock eating pasture that is contaminated with ash can suffer and die from gastrointenstinal blockages. Shortages of uncontaminated feed and water after an ash fall can also lead to starvation.

Survival of agricultural crops and pasture is often severely limited when ash thickness is greater than 10-15 cm (4-6 in). Predicting the potential crop losses from ash fall, however, is difficult and usually exaggerated because of the great variety of environmental and plant conditions that exist in tropical and temperate areas during and after ash falls of varying thicknesses.

The abrasiveness of ash can damage farm machinery and equipment, but increased maintenance and a few precautionary actions can signifiantly reduce the cost of keeping the machinery in working condition.

Chain reaction possible?
quote:
April 15 (Bloomberg) -- The Icelandic volcano that erupted for the second time in four weeks may ignite a geological chain reaction with another volcano nearby, potentially extending a disruption to air traffic as ash plumes block flight paths.

The Eyjafjallajokull volcano in southern Iceland is adjacent to the Katla volcano, increasing the risk of a second eruption, said Ármann Höskuldsson, a volcanologist at the Institute of Earth Sciences at the University of Iceland. The Eyjafjallajokull last erupted in 1821 and remained active for two years, according to the researcher.

“It is a beautiful volcano, but not when it’s erupting,” Höskuldsson said. “It might be better tomorrow, but it could take a few days.”

celand sits on an oceanic ridge in the Atlantic that provides a continuous flow of magma, keeping the crust warm and providing natural energy. Iceland has more than 200 volcanoes and more than 600 hot springs. The volcano, located in a thinly populated part of Iceland, will likely spew ashes for a couple of days before lava emerges, according to the university.

The island is home to 320,000 residents. Settlers arrived in Iceland around 874 on sail-powered wooden longships. The country came under Norwegian control in 1262 and then under Danish dominion in 1380. It gained autonomy 90 years ago and became fully independent from Denmark in 1944. Iceland made headlines in the last year after its financial system cratered.

quote:
The Katla volcano has a reputation as one of the most dangerous volcanoes in Iceland. It is situated to the north of Vík í Mũrdal and to the east of the smaller Eyjafjallajökull glacier. Its peak reaches 1,512 metres (4,961 ft) in height and is partially covered by the Mũrdalsjökull glacier with an area of 595 km˛.

The crater of the volcano has a diameter of 10 km and the volcano normally erupts every 40–80 years. The last major eruption occurred in 1918, although there may have been a small eruption in 1955.[1] Since 930, 16 eruptions have been documented. The Eldgjá canyon is part of the same volcanic system.[2][3] It is thought that Katla is the source of the Vedde Ash (more than 6 to 7 cubic kilometers (1.4 to 1.7 cu mi) of tephra dated to 10,600 years BP)[1][4][5][6] found at a number of sites including Norway, Scotland and North Atlantic cores.

Before the hringvegur (Iceland's road no.1) was constructed, people feared traversing the plains in front of the volcano because of the frequent glacier outburst floods and the deep river crossings. Especially dangerous was the glacier outburst that followed the eruption of 1918. Katla has been showing signs of unrest since 1999 and geologists have concerns that it might erupt in the near future.[7] Particularly, monitoring has been intensified following the March 2010 eruption of volcano beneath the Eyjafjallajökull glacier.[8] The eruption of this nearby long-dormant volcano in March 2010 prompted fears among some geophysicists that it may trigger an eruption at Katla.[9][10][11]

At the peak of the 1755 eruption the flood discharge has been estimated between 200,000–400,000 mŗ/s; for comparison the combined average discharge of the Amazon,[citation needed] Mississippi, Nile, and Yangtze rivers is about 290,000 mŗ/s.[12]
