A person with knowledge of the situation said Beltran did not obtain advance written consent from the club to have the surgery, which was performed by his personal physician, Dr. Richard Steadman, in Colorado. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Mets didn't discuss the matter publicly.

Beltran's agent, Scott Boras, said the guarantee language in the slugger's contract requires advance written permission only for elective operations.

"This was necessary surgery, necessary surgery to work," Boras told The Associated Press.

The Mets might claim that the operation was elective.

The deadline for players to file for arbitration was Friday. Lincecum is eligible for the first time and figures to earn $10 million or more this year after going 33-12 over the past two seasons.

4:35pm: Coley Ward at UmpBump.com says that Hernandez has bonuses in the contract that will pay him $1MM if he wins a Cy Young, $500K if he finishes second, and $250K if he finishes in third.

3:05pm: Heyman tweets that Hernandez will get a $3.5MM signing bonus, and will make $20MM in 2014, the final year of the contract.

9:28am: Heyman confirms (via Twitter) that it is in fact a five year deal worth $78MM. Good job by Blavia beating everyone to the scoop.

The deal buys out Hernandez's two remaining years of arbitration plus three years of free agency at an average annual salary of $15.6MM. FanGraphs says Felix's performance was worth exactly double that in 2009, and has been worth at least that every year since 2007. It's hard not to love this deal for the Mariners, and it sure isn't bad for a 23-year-old pitcher either.

Lincecum's case is an interesting test because few players have entered salary arbitration with credentials similar to his. Called up early in the 2007 season, the right-hander has a 40-17 record with a 2.90 ERA.

He won the Cy Young in his first two full seasons, becoming the first repeat winner since Randy Johnson from 1999-2002. Lincecum was a bargain for the Giants last year, when he made $650,000.

He had no negotiating leverage then, but is guaranteed to increase his salary by more than twelvefold even if he loses his case because he is eligible for arbitration as a so-called "Super 2" -- a player in the top 17 percent of service time between two and three seasons.

Lincecum's case could be most similar to Howard, who won a $10 million award in his first time in arbitration in 2008. Howard won the NL MVP in 2006 when he led the league with 58 home runs and followed that with 47 homers in 2007. The Phillies offered $7 million, while Howard won with his $10 million request.

The contract is $16 million for two years. The New York Mets are believed to have offered $15 million for two years, and they might have been willing to go a little higher to seal the deal. News of the the agreement was first reported by Newsday.

Pineiro went 15-12 with a 3.49 ERA for the St. Louis Cardinals last season. He walked just 27 batters in 214 innings and posted a 60.5 percent groundball rate due to a newfound sinker.

The Angels hope Pineiro will help fill a hole created by the departure of John Lackey, who left the AL West champions for a five-year, $82.5 million deal with the Boston Red Sox. Pineiro joins a rotation that includes Jered Weaver, Joe Saunders, Scott Kazmir and Ervin Santana.
