Icelandic authorities evacuated about 800 people early Wednesday because of a possible volcano eruption near the Eyjafjallajokull glacier, an emergency spokesman said.

The first evacuations began at 2 a.m. (10 p.m. ET Tuesday), according to Rognvaldur Olafsson, chief inspector at Iceland's Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management. He said everyone in the area was safe. "We have located the fissure that is erupting under the glacier," Olafsson told CNN. He said scientists are currently doing aerial reconnaissance of the area and that officials would know more when they return.

So far, he said, the eruption has created a large hole in the glacier. Lava is not a big concern but flooding is, he said. "The volcano is under the glacier and it's melting parts of the glacier," Olafsson said. "The rivers will rise and potentially make some damage." Rivers closest to the glacier have already started rising, he added.

The glacier is the sixth-biggest in Iceland, just to the west of the bigger glacier, Myrdalsjokull. It is about 100 miles (160 km) east of the capital, Reykjavik. A map from the Icelandic Meteorological Office showed seismic activity of between 1 and 2 magnitude in the area around the glacier Wednesday morning.

New Iceland Eruption Causes Glacial Flooding

The water level by the glacial tongue Gígjökull on the northern Eyjafjallajökull has increased significantly since last night. Before the new eruption began the water level was 75 centimeters, now it has exceeded two meters and continues to rise.

he Coast Guard airplane TF Sif is currently flying over Eyjafjallajökull with earth scientists and reporters on board. They are in direct contact with the Icelandic Civil Protection Department, ruv.is reports.

They have confirmed that there is glacial flooding on both sides of Gígjökull and that the water level in the lagoon in front of the glacial tongue is constantly increasing. The water that flows into the lagoon is dark in color.

However, the water flow has yet to reach the peak of spring thaw.

Visibility is very limited in the area but the airplane's crew has spotted a cloud of volcanic ash and smoke which extends 12,000 to 14,000 feet into the air and appears to be coming out of the glacier’s summit.

Magma is melting its way through the icecap; there is a circular ice free area by the summit measuring approximately 200 meters in diameter.

The Ring Road, Iceland’s highway No. 1, is closed between Skķgar and the crossroads to Gunnarsholt east of Hella.

Verkeersbureau IJsland: wel vluchten naar IJsland/Reykjavik

Gisteren is er in IJsland een nieuwe eruptie ontstaan. Deze uitbarsting onder de Eyjafjallajokull gletsjer is 10 tot 20 keer krachtiger dan die van 21 maart j.l. De wolk welke hierdoor is ontstaan heeft inmiddels het Europese continent bereikt. Luchthavens in Scandinavie en Groot Brittanie zijn gesloten en vluchten zijn geannuleerd of worden omgeleid. Ook is het vliegverkeer van en naar Schiphol getroffen.

Icelandair meldt bij deze dat de vlucht FI502 vandaag van IJsland (KEF) vertrokken is naar Amsterdam (AMS). Het plan is ook om de Nederlandse toeristen vandaag gewoon met vlucht FI503 naar Keflavik International Airport te brengen. Door een kleine omleiding heeft de vlucht een vertraging van ca. 60 minuten.

De vulkaan Eyjafjallajokull ligt in een zeer afgelegen gebied en heeft geen effect op het dagelijkse leven van IJsland. Gezegd wordt dat het ergste betreffende de uitbarsting voorbij is en dat dit in het weekend geen invloed zal hebben op de Icelandair vluchten van en naar Amsterdam.
