quote:Massa targets Brazilian GP comeback
Felipe Massa is targeting a comeback at this year's Brazilian Grand Prix as he continues to make good progress in his recovery from the head injury he sustained in Hungary three weeks ago.
The Brazilian sustained a brain concussion and damage to his skull and left eye after being struck on the helmet by a spring that had fallen out of Rubens Barrichello's car.
Massa is now recovering at home after being released from the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo two weeks ago, and is hoping to return to Formula 1 as soon as possible - targeting his home race in October.
"I cannot wait to race again, I hope I can do the Brazilian Grand Prix," Massa told Brazilian television channel Globo. "But it's not for me to say, it's for the doctors, and I have to show I can be ready for the grand prix."
He will have to pass an FIA medical test and an eye examination before he will be allowed back into a Formula 1 car.
"I think I am going to do some laps in a go-kart beforehand, then I will go to the FIA to do the examinations and get the authorisation to come back to racing."
Massa says he has no recollections of the accident itself, and just remembers waking up in the hospital in Hungary.
"I lived the accident, but I slept," he said. "I didn't see the spring. Many people ask me: 'the spring came, did you not see it?' But I didn't see it hit me, I didn't see anything. The spring just hit my head and I slept. The car crashed and I carried on accelerating but it almost wasn't me that was doing it. It looks like I move my hands, but I was sleeping.
"When I woke in hospital, I felt that everything was working. I saw that my eye was really really big, but I was breathing and thinking. I could move my arms, I could move my legs, I could move everything."
He confirmed that Barrichello feels no guilt over the incident after he was visited at home by his fellow Brazilian last week.
"Not at all," Massa added. "He didn't even know that I was behind him. It's not a problem at all. We are really good friends and what happened was going to happen, it could have been the spring from anyone."
Massa also said he had been touched by the response from his fans in his native Brazil.
"I had an idea, but the moment I got back to Brazil after the accident everyone was clapping me and shouting and hoping for me to get better and come back and race," he said. "It's a unique feeling and I keep saying 'thank you' all the time."

Date 2009-08-19
Romain Grosjean has clarified that, as a Formula One driver, he considers himself French rather than Swiss.
The 23-year-old, promoted to replace Nelson Piquet at Renault for the balance of the 2009 season, was actually born and still resides in Geneva, moving the Swiss media this week to hail Switzerland's second current F1 racer alongside Sebastien Buemi.
But keen eyed and eared observers will have seen only the French flag on Grosjean's overalls and heard only 'La Marseillaise' on the podium after his GP2 race wins.
Grosjean, whose father is Swiss and mother is French, holds duel citizenship and has both a Swiss and French passport, but his racing license is issued by the French federation FFSA.
"In motor sport, my nationality is clearly French, because all of the support in my career was coming from France, never from Switzerland," he is quoted as saying by the Swiss daily newspaper Le Matin.
Grosjean added this week: "Renault has supported me since 2006 and it was only with their help that I could afford to continue racing."
It is reported that until the age of 14, when he began his motor racing career, Grosjean was headed for a future in skiing, until his father baulked at the rising influence of doping in the winter sport.

quote:Kimi Raikkonen is rumoured to be leaving Ferrari at the end of the season to compete in the 2010 World Rally Championship.
The rumours are strengthened by the fact that both Fiat and Volkswagen have confirmed they will be entering the series next year. According to the Financial Times, Neil Duncanson, chairman of the TV company North One (who own the WRC series) has confirmed that Fiat and Volkswagen will be replacing Subaru and Suzuki.
Having tried his hand at WRC in a Fiat Punto earlier this year, it would not come as a shock to many if the Finnish driver chose to leave Ferrari a year early and make the move to WRB. Although Raikkonen is currently contracted to Ferrari until the end of 2010, many believe that the team may offer him a deal which would allow him to leave F1 and pave the way for Alonso to replace him. If rumours are to be believed, Ferrari have already offered the Spanish driver a £175 million contract to drive for Ferrari from 2010.
Raikkonen recently participated in Rally Finland. His Fiat Grande Punto suffered from engine trouble and although he eventually crashed out of the race, Raikkonen ended up finishing in 15th place and his performance was praised by many,

quote:Kovalainen told to raise his game
Heikki Kovalainen has been told that he needs to raise his game over the remainder of the season if he is to have any chance of keeping hold of his seat at McLaren in 2010.
AUTOSPORT understands that Kovalainen's option for next year with McLaren has now lapsed, although the team has not ruled out retaining the Finn. Team principal Martin Whitmarsh has made it clear however that Kovalainen needs to deliver more in the next few races than he has shown so far this season - and the Finn was informed of the situation during a factory visit on Wednesday.
"Heikki is doing, as a team player, a fantastic job in this team," Whitmarsh said in a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes 'Phone-In' media call. "On his own evaluation he has not raced as well as he would have liked and we would have liked him to this year.
"I was frankly just talking to him on the subject a few minutes before this call. He is working hard...
"A lot of us want to see Heikki get some good results this year, and that will ensure that he remains with us. That is certainly our wish. His goal going into Valencia this weekend is to win - and he is capable of winning the race this weekend.
"He has been a good qualifier, he has done some good qualifying times, and he is capable of qualifying well and winning this race. So that is what he is going to focus on, and I've just had that conversation with him. Then on Sunday evening he will start thinking about Spa, and that is what we want him to focus on - not all the speculation."
In a boost to Kovalainen's situation, McLaren is adamant it has not begun discussions with any other driver yet about a seat in 2010, despite fresh rumours linking Nico Rosberg with the outfit now that the German's previous likely destination BMW Sauber is out of F1.
"Speculation is normal," said Whitmarsh. "We are not commenting on it, but I can confirm that contrary to some of the speculation we are not in discussions with any other drivers outside this team at the moment."
And, denying any talk that McLaren was under pressure to take a German driver to appease engine partner Mercedes-Benz, Whitmarsh said: "In terms of nationality, obviously some nationalities from a marketing perspective are more convenient, but McLaren continues to have the strategy and policy that we will get the two best drivers in our cars every season, and that is what we will continue to do."

Chad Hurley is joining USF1
Chad Hurley, the co-founder and present CEO of YouTube, has joined USF1, following rumours that emerged two weeks ago linking him to the team.
Hurley said:
Getting in on the ground floor of a project of this size and scope is a tremendous opportunity, and I look forward to helping shape the USF1 vision and corporate strategy for years to come.
As we discussed earlier the implications of the tie-up are interesting as Formula 1’s commercial owners are at pains to stop fans sharing F1 videos (even those they shot themselves) being uploaded to YouTube. Hopefully Hurley’s arrival on the scene will help awaken the powers-that-be to the massive opportunities for promotion YouTube offers.
The deal is a serious coup for USF1, who have brought on board a man who helped found a website that was sold for $1.65bn just 17 months after it was set up.
It’s not clear whether this means we’ll see YouTube logos on the side of the USF1 cars in 2010.
Press release
CHAD HURLEY, CO-FOUNDER AND CEO OF YOUTUBE, JOINS USF1 TEAM
Hurley to Provide Visionary Guidance and Corporate Strategy Expertise to America’s First Formula One Team in More Than 40 Years
Charlotte, N.C. (Aug. 20, 2009) – Taking on the might of the world’s best race teams just got a little bit easier for USF1 as it was announced today that Chad Hurley, YouTube co-founder and CEO, has joined the American operation in its quest to compete on the world’s grandest of motorsports stages in 2010 and beyond.
USF1, led by Formula One veterans Ken Anderson and Peter Windsor, is bidding to become the first American team to win a Grand Prix since Dan Gurney’s Eagle in 1967. USF1, which was formally accepted by the Federation de l’Automobile (FIA) on Friday, July 31, when it signed the Concorde Agreement, is currently designing its racecar and developing its sponsorship portfolio and driver lineup.
“I am thrilled to be a part of America’s first Formula One team in more than 40 years,” Hurley said. “Getting in on the ground floor of a project of this size and scope is a tremendous opportunity, and I look forward to helping shape the USF1 vision and corporate strategy for years to come.”
In his role as USF1’s primary investor, Hurley will bring his entrepreneurial ingenuity and unique outlook on social media to USF1 while also providing corporate strategy and visionary expertise to the startup operation. Hurley will be a major force behind the team’s goal to showcase that a U.S.-based team with American technology can compete again in Formula One and eventually win races in the most prestigious and most celebrated motorsport in the world.
“Chad’s addition to the team is a victory for USF1,” said Anderson, USF1 president, CEO and team principal. “Bringing in a businessman with his level of credentials, and experience in developing and fostering a vision for startup companies, is an honor, and we look forward to taking on the Formula One challenge together in 2010 and beyond.”
Hurley is credited with helping take YouTube, the world’s largest video sharing site, from a simple idea to a cultural phenomenon which in 2006 was awarded “Best Invention of the Year” by Time Magazine.
“This is a great day for USF1,” said Windsor, executive vice president and sporting director for USF1. “Chad’s commitment to this team is vital and his visionary expertise and leadership will help steer us into the future as we look to attract best-in-class sponsors, drivers, employees and fans in our quest to compete at the highest level of motorsports.”
For much of the last 10 months USF1 has been designing its racecars from its headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina, the motorsports capital of the United States. The location of the 40,000 square-foot facility provides accessibility to top-level staff members and the highest concentration of racing-specific suppliers, technical analysis companies and testing partners in the United States.
Formula One is the world’s most popular and recognizable form of motorsport featuring racing’s most advanced cars and talented drivers. In 2009, Formula One is holding 17 races in 16 countries that are televised in nearly 200 countries with worldwide viewership of race broadcasts likely to exceed 600 million people.
About USF1 Team
USF1 Team is an officially sanctioned and approved Formula One operation that was formed by motorsports veterans Ken Anderson and Peter Windsor. From the design and construction of the racecar to the development of the next generation of American drivers, USF1 brings an authentic American effort to the global stage of Formula One. Headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, motorsports capital of the United States, USF1 will compete full time in 2010 and beyond in one of the world’s largest and most popular sports.

autosport.comquote:Theissen: Team has offers to consider
By Jonathan Noble Thursday, August 20th 2009, 18:32 GMT
BMW Sauber has several offers on the table from parties interested in saving the Formula 1 outfit, with evaluation of those bids due to analysed by team chiefs over the next few days.
The Hinwil-based team has taken its first step in trying to secure its future by officially re-entering next year's world championship before last Monday's deadline, even though details of a rescue package have not been finalised.
Although an offer from shareholder Peter Sauber to take over the outfit was recently rejected by BMW, the former F1 team principal is now working with BMW motorsport director Mario Theissen to try to secure the outfit's future.
Theissen said he was optimistic that a solution could be found, even though he acknowledged it would not be straightforward to come to a settlement.
"It's not easy but there are opportunities," he said in Valencia. "There are interested investors, apparently a wide spectrum from just an interested question up to a structured concept with a profound business plan. And we are currently evaluating these."
He added: "Fortunately I'm not working on my own, I am doing it together with Peter. He is trying very hard to use his connections and he is talking to people. We are doing it jointly.
"I cannot tell you anything about the on-going negotiations. As I have said, there are several interested parties and we are just about to evaluate the individual proposals."
Theissen has also dropped a hint that he could leave his position within BMW to take up a role with the new version of the team if a buyer is found.
"That's still open," he said about the suggestion. "I'm not thinking about it. The first priority is to secure the future of the team in my current role with the team. Then after the season we can see what will happen to me."
Theissen also denied any suggestion that the team's poor form this year was the catalyst for the decision by BMW to quit F1.
When asked how different the situation would have been if BMW Sauber was winning races, Theissen said: "I think not too much different because the underlying theme was that the board has said there was a shift in the corporate strategy.
"This is something which happens not from one day to another. It's a long-term issue. A continuous move. And then there are apparently other instant events which trigger such a decision and in this case it has been the obligation to sign up (to the Concorde Agreement) for three more years, under a certain environment and that was basically the culmination."

quote:Shock details of the injuries which floored Michael Schumacher
The full, horrific extent of the neck and head injuries that prevented Michael Schumacher making a Formula One comeback have been revealed by his personal doctor.
Schumacher, who retired in 2006, had hoped to make a dramatic return to the track as replacement for injured Ferrari driver Felipe Massa in the European Grand Prix in Valencia.
But the 40-year-old winner of a record seven world titles was forced to abandon those plans following a special test session in a 2007 Ferrari Formula One 10 days ago.
At the time, the German merely said the lasting effects of damage to his neck sustained when he crashed a racing motorbike at 140mph in February meant he would not have been fit enough to last a Grand Prix.
But now Dr Johannes Peil has given a full list of the injuries Schumacher suffered when he fell from his Honda Superbike during a test session,
Dr Peil said: "He had a serious injury to the seventh vertebra of the neck, a fracture of the first left rib and a fracture at the base of the skull, roughly the size of a thumbnail but in a place supporting the whole weight of the skull.
"There was also a hairline fracture on the left side of the skull."
One of the two main arteries to Schumacher's brain was also damaged.
Incredibly, Peil claimed Schumacher could still race again. It is understood the injuries that stopped him racing on Sunday have healed well. Given more time for recovery, and special neck-strengthening exercises, Schumacher could return in 2010 if he wanted to.
Massa's car will now be driven by Italian veteran Luca Badoer at least until the Brazilian Grand Prix in October when Massa hopes to make his own comeback.
Meanwhile, Mark Webber believes that the championship has been thrown wide open after he and Red Bull team-mate Sebastian Vettel destroyed the aura of invincibility that had embraced Jenson Button.
Webber finished ahead of Button in the last three races, and third place last time out in Hungary means the Australian has narrowed the gap on the Brawn driver to 18.5 points. Vettel also beat Button at Silverstone, where the German sensation took the chequered flag, and at his home Grand Prix at the Nürburgring where he was runner-up to Webber. He retired his car in Hungary, but with 47 points to Button's 70 he is well within reach with seven rounds of the championship to go.
Webber said: "It looked like Jenson was going to win it. After six or seven races he and his Brawn GP team looked unbeatable. But we've proved that wrong in the last three races. We're still up there and we haven't been blown away by any means."
Button knows he faces a battle to hold off his Red Bull rivals and said: "With the cars at the front being so close at the moment it should be an interesting weekend."
