Stilstkin?

quote:Described as a "wake-up call," by, their fourth album presents the most accomplished version of their gripping, anthemic sound yet. Appropriate to its title,
comes in sweeps and swells, ranging from searching, uncompromising rock like "Killed By an Angel" and "One" to gentle, beautiful ballads like "Rain Song" and even pop-tinged songs like "Television," which sounds a bit like a more propulsive version of the Police's early '80s singles.
Though the album was recorded with a trio lineup, it's some of the band's fullest-sounding work, rich with strings and keyboard flourishes that add extra depth to the shimmering, Eastern-inspired drones of "Fool in the Photograph" and "Faces in Disguise." Lou Giordano's production givesan unabashedly big, clean sound that frames
's detailed songwriting and arrangements perfectly, giving the restrained, reflective "Tearing in My Heart" and "The Ocean" as much impact as driven tracks like "Snibe" and "Disappear."
Best of all is the title track, which blends a beautiful melody, heartfelt vocals, and an insistent rhythm into a sweeping, affecting finale.
Expansive and complex without compromising the band's focused, impassioned style,is one of
's — and 2000's — most impressive albums.
op zich wel, maar bij lange na niet van de grootte REM, dus ik wilde ff uit die categorie wegquote:

But if they were falling apart during the making of, they were officially broken and shattered during the making of
, resulting in a sprawling, incoherent, and utterly brilliant 20-track double album. At the time of its release, it was a flop, never reaching the top of the charts and never spawning a true hit single, despite two well-received Top Ten hits.
This is the ultimate cocaine album — it's mellow for long stretches, and then bursts wide open in manic, frantic explosions, all of which are relieved by smooth, reflective work from all three songwriters.
owns this record with his nervous energy and obsessive production, winding up with a fussily detailed yet wildly messy record unlike any other. This is mainstream madness, crazier than
's idol Brian Wilson and weirder than any number of cult classics. Of course, that's why it bombed upon its original release, but
is a bracing, weirdly affecting work that may not be as universal or immediate as

Opgezocht, da's goed.quote:Op dinsdag 4 augustus 2009 16:36 schreef cafca het volgende:
