quote:The future of BMW in F1
July 29, 2009 by joesaward
BMW has called a press conference for today in Munich and it says that it wants to discuss “current developments in motor sport”. There is no doubt that this will be an important announcement of some kind as the event will involve BMW’s motorsport director Dr Mario Theissen, the company’s head of R&D, Dr Klaus Draeger and the overall boss of the company Dr Norbert Reithofer. There has been speculation that this might be a withdrawal from Formula 1, although the timing would be very odd if that was the case. It would make more sense if BMW was going to withdraw from the World Touring Car Championship, as an announcement to that effect prior to the signing of the Concorde Agreement in F1 might have been interpreted as a political manoeuvre and thus it would be best to stay quiet about the WTCC until the F1 situation was sorted out.
BMW has been a major player in the Formula One Teams’ Association and withdrawing from F1 would be a strange move at the moment when the settlement finally arrives. The Concorde Agreement ties the team into F1 until 2012 although there is already en existing commitment to stay, which was signed back in 2006. However, this affects only the F1 team and if BMW chose to hand the whole operation back to Peter Sauber, it would certainly reduce the costs involved for Munich. Pulling out without doing that would lead to legal action from Formula One Administration.
Thus the best option if Munich wants to reduce its involvement, would be to continue as an engine supplier and hand the team back to its original owner Peter Sauber. The signing of Concorde will release a sum of $250m to the teams and this money would help to pay for the team in the future, along with the existing sponsorship deals.
BMW was previously an engine supplier and could revert to that position, although it did not win the World Championship with Williams and therefore decided that it needed to run its operations in F1 and so acquired Sauber. There was heavy investment in the team and until this year the team had been on an upward trajectory. If BMW quits now, it will be a major reversal of fortunes. The economic situation has been difficult for all the manuacturers but BMW has done better than most. Sales in the important US market are now much improved, although still around 18% down on last year and it seems that the firm is doing better in the US than its major rivals, notably Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus.
Stoken of waarheid?
By Rich Jones, Press Association Sport
Formula One chief Bernie Ecclestone believes BMW's failure to challenge for the world title is behind their widely anticipated withdrawal from the sport.
The German manufacturer have called a press conference for 10am today, during which they are expected to announce that they will end their participation in F1 at the end of the season.
It is a blow to Ecclestone, who saw Honda pull out ahead of the 2009 campaign, but he is hardly surprised given BMW's inability to produce a competitive package.
"Recently when I spoke to Mario Theissen, the team manager, he said they had three years to win the world championship," Ecclestone told BBC Radio Five Live.
"That's what he wanted to do and he was quite confident they would.
"But it appears it's not quite been like that, so perhaps that's why they've (chosen) to stop."
BMW drivers Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica have amassed only eight points between them this season to leave their team eighth in the constructors' championship.
The company cited "current developments in motor sport" as the reason for calling today's press conference in Munich - but Ecclestone believes their struggles brought matters to a head.
"If I was looking after their politics, if you want to say that, I'd hardly say that we decided to leave because of our performance over the last three years," he added.
"When you consider how much money they've spent and the results they've got, it's probably not such a good investment.
"They were quite sure that they were going to win the championship within three years, and I was hoping they would."

Formula One rights holder Bernie Ecclestone does not believe Felipe Massa will drive again this season – but doubts Michael Schumacher can replace him at Ferrari.
Massa’s future in the sport has been called into question due to an eye injury suffered in Saturday’s qualifying crash at the Hungarian Grand Prix which left him in a coma.
The Brazilian’s condition has since improved and Ecclestone is confident he will be back in the cockpit, but not this year.
“I spoke to the hospital and they’re now very hopeful that it’s certainly not as bad as they expected it would be,” Ecclestone told BBC Radio Five Live.
“It’s difficult to say whether or not he’s going to be in a position to compete this year. Next year I don’t know, but I doubt we’ll see him this year.
“One thing that’s good is that they’re very, very hopeful that the eye’s not anywhere near as bad as they thought.”
Seven-time world champion Schumacher, who won five of those titles with the Italian team, has been suggested as a candidate to replace Massa for the rest of the season.
The 40-year-old remains an advisor to Ferrari following his retirement in 2006, however Ecclestone does not think he is in good enough physical shape to make a shock return.
“I doubt whether he will,” he added.
“That guy, you must remember, was super-fit when he was driving, and to get as fit as that again and be prepared to get back in a car without any testing would be asking too much.”
