By Hugh Podmore on Monday, June 29, 2009
The head of the Spanish motorsport federation Carlos Gracia has publicly backed Max Mosley’s allegation that FOTA showed disrespect to the FIA in recent days.
The Spaniard said that Luca di Montezemolo’s infamous snipe that Mosley was a ‘dictator’ were tantamount to insulting the democracy at work within the FIA.
Speaking to Spanish radio station Onda Cero, Gracia said: “I don’t support Max Mosley to the death, but I do support respecting institutions, and what Luca di Montezemolo has done was show a lack of respect to the FIA and the World Council.’
Gracia went on to say that this was more likely to harden Mosley to stand as a candidate for FIA President again.
“It wouldn’t surprise me if Max Mosley runs for re-election. The worst thing you can do with an animal is leave him wounded, and what Luca di Montezemolo has achieved is to re-activate Max. You can’t dance on someone’s grave before he’s dead.”
The Spaniard did not rule out a run for the presidency himself.

Slip of the tongue by Ron Dennis adds fuel to Fernando Alonso conspiracy theory
Edward Gorman, Motor Racing Correspondent
Ron Dennis, the team principal of the McLaren Mercedes Formula One team, let one very large cat out of a very expensive bag after Lewis Hamilton’s retirement from the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai on Sunday. Speaking about the disastrous decision to delay Hamilton’s tyre change, which led to the British rookie sliding off the track while trying to get into the pits, Dennis said something that will have convinced Fernando Alonso’s supporters that there is a conspiracy within the team against their hero.
“The problem was rain and his [Hamilton’s] tyres were in the worst condition,” Dennis said to a group of British journalists in the paddock at the circuit. “But we weren’t at all fazed about Kimi [Raikkonen, of Ferrari]. We weren’t racing Kimi, we were basically racing Fernando.”
Slip of the tongue it may have been – there were efforts by McLaren to explain it away - but, in one stroke, Dennis had made a nonsense of his claims to be treating his drivers equitably in the World Championship run-in.
What is more, Dennis’s remarks have turned into articles of faith the deep suspicions in Spain and elsewhere that McLaren could be deliberately doctoring Alonso’s car to present the championship to Hamilton. In large parts of the motor-racing world, it is regarded as gospel that Alonso is battling against not only Hamilton but also the whole McLaren team for his third consecutive drivers’ championship.
It is possible that the public will never know for certain exactly what is going on in a team who have been torn apart by the feud between their drivers and between Alonso and Dennis. The team principal says that McLaren are treating their drivers fairly and giving them equal chances to win, while Alonso says – or implies – that he is being cheated of his chance.
One element that does seem to be becoming increasingly obvious is that McLaren as an organisation have, in recent weeks, turned their collective backs on Alonso. The team are going through the motions with their unhappy Spaniard, but are deriving very little pleasure from the process and it is undoubtedly the case that, as a group, they would prefer to see Hamilton win the title.
In Spain, this regrettable state of affairs is regarded as having held sway since near the beginning of the season. In truth, there is little evidence to suggest that Alonso had anything other than a clean slate when he arrived at McLaren. But his unsportsmanlike attitude to the challenge of trying to beat Hamilton, plus his allegedly threatening behaviour towards Dennis and recent refusal to deny suggestions of “car-fixing”, have pushed him beyond the pale.
McLaren go to Interlagos next week for the Brazilian Grand Prix in a strange condition indeed. The team will be delighted if Hamilton wins his maiden world title, but the celebrations will be muted if Alonso snatches it from the Briton at the death. The saddest part about the affair is that Alonso will have made history himself if he does prevail in Brazil. He will have become the first driver since Juan Manuel Fangio to win consecutive titles with different constructors, but the team who gave him the car to do it will barely, if at all, share in his joy.
During another trying weekend for Alonso in China, he explained his view of McLaren, a team who he says have failed to treat him with the respect that he believes he deserves as a two-times world champion. “I was expecting a lot more,” Alonso said. “From the outside, the team had a different image: serious, but very professional. I improved the car as much as I could. Last year they were fighting to make it into Q3 [the third section of qualifying] and this year they are going to win the [drivers’] championship, and the truth is that the treatment has not been very good.”
When asked if the way he had been treated was deserving of a two-times champion, Alonso said: “Not a double champion, but a normal person.” And he again denied that he had been given a fair chance in his battle with Hamilton. “You are always hearing about that so-called equality in the team, but tell me what you brag about and I’ll tell you what you are lacking,” he said. “It’s impossible to have equality in a Formula One team; there’s always a better engine, a better lap to stop in. There’s always a better option.
“I’m not saying it’s not equality, because sometimes it’s one driver’s turn and other times it’s the other’s, but you always hear him [Dennis] talk about that or promising things and it’s not like that.”

Thursday 02nd July, 04:05 AM JST
NAGOYA — Toyota Motor Corp.’s Fuji International Speedway Co. plans to no longer host the Formula One Japanese Grand Prix race at its circuit in Shizuoka Prefecture, sources familiar with the matter said Wednesday. Although Toyota plans to keep participating in the auto race, the Toyota unit will refrain from hosting the race in a bid to save costs, they said. Fuji International Speedway is expected to announce the plan within this month. The top Japanese automaker expects to post a large net loss for the second consecutive year in fiscal 2009 ending next March.
Fuji International Speedway and Honda Motor Co.’s Suzuka Circuit in Mie Prefecture had agreed to alternately host the annual F1 Japanese Grand Prix. Suzuka Circuit is set to host this year’s race in October. After Fuji International Speedway’s withdrawal, Suzuka Circuit may sponsor the race every year, the sources said. Toyota acquired Fuji International Speedway close to Mt. Fuji in 2000 and invested some 20 billion yen in it before sponsoring the annual race in 2007 for the first time. It hosted the 2008 race as well.

Bridgestone has announced its tyre allocations for the four rounds of the championship from Hungary to Italy.
After much criticism from the drivers, notably Fernando Alonso, it has ceased its practice of bringing tyres two stages apart on its performance spectrum.
As last year, Hungaroring and Valencia will be tackled with its softest tyres. But for Spa Bridgestone will bring tyres one stage softer than last year.
For Monza Bridgestone is changing back to the combination of medium and soft tyres in used in 2007. Last year it brought hard and medium - but heavy rain meant the race was mostly run on wet weather tyres anyway.

Bernie Ecclestone will meet with a delegation from Bulgaria next weekend in view of adding the name of the southeastern European republic to the Formula One calendar.
We reported in March that the Bulgarian Motorcycle Federation was in talks with the F1 chief executive and assigning funds to build a bespoke Formula One circuit.
Representatives of the race organising committee have now been formally invited to the Nurburgring next weekend to meet with Ecclestone, the Focus news agency said on Thursday.
It is claimed the race promotion contract, to be initially for 2011 through 2015 and with an option to extend further, could be signed at the German Grand Prix.
Ecclestone will reportedly also meet with Baden-Wurttemberg premier Gunther Oettinger at the Nurburgring, in a bid to rescue embattled Hockenheim's Formula One round.
quote:How neutral was the 2010 team selection process?
The F1 world was stunned when Manor, Campos and USF1 were recently revealed to be the three new teams which would join the F1 grid next year. However, according to the Guardian, one man in the FIA seemed to have a good idea as to the identity of one of those teams several weeks before its selection was announced.
Alan Donnelly, the official representative of FIA president Max Mosley, has already been criticised for his consultancy firm, Sovereign Strategy, allegedly doing public relations work for the Manor team. However, if true, this conflict of interest would be nothing compared to what has come to light today.
The Guardian reports that on 29 May, two weeks before the FIA announced the identity of the three successful bidders for a place on the 2010 grid, Donnelly sent a sponsorship and investment agreement about Manor to a certain 'Royal Highness' who he hoped to meet in Saudi Arabia.
The email (complete with spelling mistakes), which is allegedly from Donnelly, says "I attach both the investment and sponsorship agreement for your consideration. Virgin have signed to be investment partners with a share holding of around 20%. I will be in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on Saturday evening and look forward to seeing you at our planned meeting at 3pm on Sunday, with representatives of Manor and Virgin. However if you woud like a pre- meeting with me privately on Sunday then please let me know, I will ofcourse be available."
If Donnelly really was touting around investment opportunities in the team before it got to the grid it raises huge conflict of interest issues.
By selling stakes in Manor, Donnelly would have been helping the team get investment which thereby improved its financial position. Clearly, no one connected to the FIA should have been favouring any prospective teams and particularly one which also has the involvement of Nick Wirth, who was one of Max Mosley's business partners in the 1990s before he launched the Simtek F1 team.
Furthermore, one has to wonder whether Donnelly would have bothered brokering deals for a team which didn't get to the grid. Then again, how could Donnelly possibly have known that it would?
According to the Guardian, Donnelly was in Saudi Arabia on official FIA business, holding meetings with its sports ministry, potential investors in new circuits and the Saudi Motorsport Federation. "I also met potential investors in Formula One," he said. "It would be odd for an FIA representative to refuse to assist in any of these projects."
That may be so but there is a big difference between assisting with a team and brokering the sale of a stake in it.
If Donnelly's response in the Guardian is anything to go by, it doesn't look as if he is denying that the email really was from him which in itself seems to raise a further question about his competence.
The email is signed off 'God Bless' which certainly does not seem to be an appropriate way to address anyone in the Arab world. After last year's revelations about Mosley's private life, the FIA surely doesn't need more embarrassment heaped on it by blunders like this.
The clean-cut Richard Branson must be cringing on reading this and it is hard to imagine how he got sucked into this crazy scheme in the first place. It could well be argued that sponsors should stick to what they do best, which is sponsoring not owning teams. Having been in F1 for less than a year Virgin is not exactly experienced in F1's eccentricities and it could soon pay the price following this latest revelation. If the email is accurate, Virgin will have gone from sponsoring the likely world champions Brawn to owning a stake in a team which, assuming it does make it to the 2010 grid, is unlikely to be regularly challenging for points far less wins.
Pitpass hears that FOTA is to demand that the team selection process is not just reviewed but started from scratch. With this latest development that seems a sensible move.

quote:Bernie's discussions of Hitler, Saddam Hussein and others really does Mosley no favours at all. And the suggestion that Hitler might not have been the man responsible for the Nazi outrages shows that Ecclestone has not read Mein Kampf which clearly laid out what Hitler intended to do and explained how he had become anti-Jewish. This was published in 1925, long before he came to power.
Inevitably Ecclestone's remarks about Hitler drew a strong reaction from Jewish groups and politicians on both sides of the house.
Stephen Pollard, the editor of the Jewish Chronicle, said that "Ecclestone is either an idiot or morally repulsive. Either he has no idea how stupid and offensive his views are or he does and deserves to be held in contempt by all decent people".

The Association subsequently pressed for improvements to car and circuit safety in the wake of Imola and other serious crashes during the 1994 season; in 2001 the FIA mandated the use of the HANS device, designed to prevent the type of injury suffered by Ratzenberger.
Niet Max ... maar SENNA.quote:On Friday, during the afternoon qualifying session, Senna's protégé, the then F1 newcomer Rubens Barrichello, was involved in a serious accident that prevented him from competing in the race. The next day Austrian driver Roland Ratzenberger was killed in qualifying.
Senna spent his final morning meeting fellow drivers, determined after Ratzenberger's accident to take on a new responsibility to re-create a Drivers' Safety group (i.e. Grand Prix Drivers' Association) to increase safety in Formula One. As the most senior driver, he offered to take the role of leader in this effort.
