Noord-Korea had aangekondigd de raket af te schieten tussen 4 en 8 april. De VS waarschuwde eerder dat het de lancering als een provocatie zou zien.

Ik vind al deze ophef vanwege deze raket ook vrij hypocriet. Iedereen vuurt toch raketten af. De VS, Europa, China, Rusland, Japan, Zuid-Korea, noem maar op. Ieder land dat in staat is tot het ontwikkelen en lanceren van een raket doet dat gewoon. Dus waarom zou het afvuren van een raket door Noord-Korea dan opeens zo'n enorme provocatie zijn?

Ik snap wel dat het niet wenselijk is dat een dergelijk land over kernwapens in combinatie met lange afstandsraketten beschikt, maar huilie-huilie doen omdat ze nu een raketje afvuren is wel heel hypocriet. Tv-stations in Noord- en Zuid-Korea hebben dinsdag beelden getoond van de lancering van de raket die zondag door Noord-Korea werd uitgevoerd. Kijkers zagen een witte drietrapsraket met het woord Chosun (Korea) wegvliegen vanaf het lanceerplatform, zo meldde het Zuid-Koreaanse persbureau Yonhap.

De beelden waren eerst te zien op de staatstelevisie in Noord-Korea. Kort daarna werd dezelfde video ook getoond op de Zuid-Koreaanse televisie.

Een Amerikaans onderzoeksinstituut gaf eveneens dinsdag de vermoedelijk eerste satellietfoto's van de raketlancering vrij. Hierop is onder meer een door de raket uitgestoten pluim te zien. De door het Institute for Science and International Security in Washington vrijgegeven foto's zijn genomen op enkele kilometers afstand van de lanceerplaats Musudan-ri aan de noordoostkust van Noord-Korea.

Staatsmedia in het geïsoleerde communistische Noord-Korea meldden zondag vol trots dat een satelliet met succes in de ruimte was gebracht. De ,,experimentele communicatiesatelliet'' zou rond de aarde cirkelen en ,,revolutionaire liederen'' uitzenden. Maar volgens Westerse landen wilde Noord-Korea in werkelijkheid alleen een langeafstandsraket testen.

Of de lancering een succes was, zoals Noord-Korea beweert, is niet duidelijk. Volgens Zuid-Korea en de Amerikaanse strijdkrachten is de raket, met satelliet en al, in de Stille Oceaan gestort.

Sanctions threat

A further meeting is set for Tuesday, but correspondents say it may take days to reach a deal.

Washington and Tokyo are seeking a strong response, but Beijing and Moscow have called for "restraint" - although it is unclear exactly what this means. Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was quoted by state media as saying that while the situation was "of major concern", Moscow wanted to look into it in more detail.

China's foreign ministry spokesman Jiang Yu said this issue involved "a country's right to peaceful use of space".

"We believe the Security Council should respond in a prudent way," he said.

Earlier US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said North Korea's launch had "grave implications", and she called for the UN to adopt a "strong position" in response.

"North Korea ignored its international obligations, rejected the unequivocal calls for restraint, and further isolated itself from the community of nations."

The US, South Korea and Japan say the launch violates a UN Security Council resolution adopted in October 2006 which bans North Korea from carrying out ballistic missile activity

Neutraal terrein
Voetbalcoach Kim heeft de FIFA nog gevraagd de wedstrijd uit te stellen en vervolgens te laten spelen op neutraal terrein.

De internationale voetbalbond weigerde op het verzoek in te gaan.

Sportarts
De Zuid-Koreaanse voetbalbond ontkent alle beschuldigingen.

Volgens de bond heeft een sportarts de verzwakte voetbalspelers onderzocht en geen ernstige gezondheidsproblemen gevonden.

Noord-Korea heeft inmiddels een klacht ingediend bij de FIFA.

Japan's Cabinet reauthorized and ramped up economic sanctions imposed on the isolated country since a 2006 missile test, by lowering the cap on remittances that must be reported and reducing the amount of money visitors can carry into the North, Chief Cabinet Secretary Takeo Kawamura announced.

The old sanctions, which must be renewed every six months, expire on Monday. The latest renewal is good for one year.

The new measures will reduce the amount of remittances to North Korea subject to reporting to the Japanese government to $100,000 from $300,000 and slash the amount of money that travelers can bring into the North by more than one-third to $3,000.

White House Calls on North Korea to End 'Provocative Threats'

North Korea vowed Tuesday to restart its nuclear reactor and to boycott international disarmament talks for good in retaliation for the U.N. Security Council's condemnation of its rocket launch.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said Tuesday that North Korea ordered the immediate expulsion of its inspectors and told the U.N. nuclear watchdog it was reactivating all of its nuclear facilities.

North Korea told inspectors to remove seals and cameras from its Yongbyon nuclear site and leave the country as quickly as possible, an IAEA statement said.

Pyongyang informed the IAEA it was "immediately ceasing all cooperation," the statement said.

The vow to restart its nuclear reactor and boycott international disarmament talks was a serious step in the wrong direction, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said.

North Korea must "cease its provocative threats" and respect the will of the international community, which won't accept the communist country unless it abandons what the White House calls its pursuit of nuclear weapons, Gibbs said.

Russia, voicing regret over the move, urged Pyongyang to return to the negotiating table. Its Foreign Ministry called the U.N. statement "legitimate and well-balanced," and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said all sides must stick to the disarmament process. China, North Korea's main ally, appealed for calm.

All 15 members of the Security Council, including Beijing and Moscow, agreed to condemn the April 5 missile launch as a violation of U.N. resolutions and to tighten sanctions against the regime. The U.N. statement was weaker than the resolution Japan and the United States had pursued.

North Korea claims it sent a communications satellite into space as part of a peaceful bid to develop its space program. The U.S. and others call the launch an illicit test of the technology used to fire an intercontinental ballistic missile, even one eventually destined for the U.S.

A Security Council resolution passed in 2006, days after North Korea carried out an underground nuclear test, prohibits Pyongyang from engaging in any ballistic missile-related activity -- including launching rockets that use the same delivery technology as missiles mounted with warheads, Washington and other nations say.

President Barack Obama called the U.N. statement, which also called for quick resumption of disarmament talks, a "clear and united message" that North Korea's action was unlawful and would result in real consequences, Gibbs said.

North Korea carried out an underground nuclear test in 2006 but until recently foreign governments believed that such nuclear devices were useless as weapons because they were too unwieldy to be mounted on a missile.

With 13,000 artillery pieces buried close to the border between the two Koreas, and chemical and biological warheads, it was always understood that the North could inflict significant conventional damage on Seoul, the South Korean capital. Military planners had calculated, however, that it could not strike outside the peninsula.

Now North Korea’s supreme leader, Kim Jong Il, has the potential to kill millions in Japan as well as the South, and to lay waste U.S. bases and airfields in both countries. It will force military strategists to rethink plans for war in Korea and significantly increase the potential costs of any intervention in a future Korean war. Verenigde Staten


De Noord-Koreaanse krant Rodong Sinmun zei zondag in een redactioneel commentaar dat de Verenigde Staten duizend kernwapens in Zuid-Korea hebben gestationeerd. Zaterdag zei het weekblad Tongil Sinbo al dat de VS een groot aantal kernwapens heeft liggen in Zuid-Korea en Japan.


"Noord-Korea ligt geheel binnen bereik van een Amerikaanse nucleaire aanval en het Koreaanse schiereiland wordt een gebied waar de kans op een kernoorlog het grootst is van de wereld", aldus het artikel.

Beschuldigingen


Een woordvoerder van het Amerikaanse opperbevel in Seoul wees de beschuldigingen als ongegrond van de hand. Er zijn geen kernwapens in Zuid-Korea, zei hij. Amerikaanse tactische wapens werden in 1991 weggehaald in het kader van een wapenreductie die na het einde van de Koude Oorlog werd doorgevoerd.

Zaterdag reageerde Noord-Korea met dreigende taal op nieuwe sancties die de VN-Veiligheidsraad uitvaardigde na een nieuwe Noord-Koreaanse kernproef. Het kondigde aan te beginnen met het verrijken van uranium en wapens te maken van al het plutonium in het land. Ook dreigde het met 'resolute militaire actie' tegen elk land dat het waagt zijn schepen aan te houden op grond van de nieuwe sancties.

Sancties

De Amerikaanse vicepresident Joe Biden noemde het zondag belangrijk dat de sancties worden uitgevoerd. "God mag wetenwat de Noord-Koreaanse leider Ki Jong Il beoogt met zijn halsstarrige houding", verzuchtte Biden.

"Of het al dan niet te maken heeft met zijn opvolging, zijn behoefte aan respect of een werkelijke wil met kernwapens te dreigen valt niet te zeggen. Een Noord-Korea dat kernwapens de wereld instuurt of zelf gebruikt is hoe dan ook 'een ernstig gevaar voor de wereld", zo zei hij.

TOKYO — North Korea may fire a long-range ballistic missile toward Hawaii in early July, a Japanese news report said Thursday, as Russia and China urged the regime to return to international disarmament talks on its rogue nuclear program.

The missile, believed to be a Taepodong-2 with a range of up to 4,000 miles, would be launched from North Korea's Dongchang-ni site on the northwestern coast, said the Yomiuri daily, Japan's top-selling newspaper. It cited an analysis by the Japanese Defense Ministry and intelligence gathered by U.S. reconnaissance satellites.

The missile launch could come between July 4 and 8, the paper said.

While the newspaper speculated the Taepodong-2 could fly over Japan and toward Hawaii, it said the missile would not be able to hit Hawaii's main islands, which are about 4,500 miles from the Korean peninsula.

A spokesman for the Japanese Defense Ministry declined to comment on the report. South Korea's Defense Ministry and the National Intelligence Service — the country's main spy agency — said they could not confirm it.

Seoul, 18 juni. Noord-Korea beschikt over enkele duizenden tonnen aan chemische wapens die, afgeschoten met artillerie en raketten, kunnen worden ingezet bij een snelle aanval op Zuid-Korea. Dit stelt de International Crisis Group (ICG) , een gezaghebbende denktank die waarschuwt voor gewapende conflicten in de wereld, vandaag in een rapport.

Volgens de organisatie heeft het land tussen de 2.500 en 5.000 ton aan chemische wapens als mosterdgas, zenuwgas en sarin. Het ICG gaat ervan uit dat Noord-Korea 600 scud-rakketten heeft waarmee het Zuid-Korea kan treffen en 320 rodong raketten die Japan kunnen bereiken.

Pyongyang heeft de chemische wapens de afgelopen decennia ontwikkeld en kan bij een conflict, ook met conventionele artillerie, de agglomeratie Seoul bereiken. Daar wonen ongeveer 20 miljoen mensen, bijna de helft van de totale bevolking van Zuid-Korea. De wapens zijn „voldoende om op grote schaal burgerslachtoffers te veroorzaken in Zuid-Korea”.

Het ICG roept de Verenigde Staten op om met Noord-Korea een dialoog aan te gaan over de huidige nucleaire crisis. „Diplomatie is de minst slechte optie”, aldus de denktank.

Rusland en China hebben Noord-Korea opgeroepen terug te keren naar het zes landenoverleg over het nucleaire programma van het land. Pyongyang verliet dit overleg in april, nadat de Veiligheidsraad van de Verenigde Naties de lancering van een raket voor de lange afstand had veroordeeld.

The cargo ship Kang Nam may not look like much, but it is suddenly attracting a lot of attention from the U.S. military.

It is the first North Korean ship to set sail since the U.N. Security Council passed a resolution calling on the U.S. and other navies to intercept North Korean vessels believed to be carrying arms.

That means a U.S. warship could request permission to search the Kang Nam, but it could not use force to board her if North Korea refuses, which it almost certainly will.

North Korea has threatened to retaliate if its ships are interfered with - and is preparing a new launch pad to fire off a long range missile capable of reaching Hawaii. Two previous long-range missile tests have failed, but the Pentagon is taking no chances.

It's positioning a giant radar at sea to track any North Korea launch and sending interceptor missiles to Hawaii as a back up to interceptors based in California and Alaska.

"I think we are in a good position, should it become necessary to protect the … American territory," Defense Secretary Robert Gates told reporters.

The Kang Nam was halted for safety violations entering the port of Hong Kong two years ago. That such a seemingly unassuming vessel could become a key player in such a high-tech standoff is almost laughable.

Except that that is exactly what's happening.

MOSCOW, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Russia is monitoring a possible missile launch by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), news agencies reported on Friday, citing a deputy chief of the Russian armed forces.

"It is too early to say when North Korea could launch a missile -- this could happen any time," Lt. Gen. Alexander Burutin was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti. "Our monitoring facilities are on permanent alert, and we will trace the missile seconds after it is launched," he said.

Burutin warned that his country will intercept the DPRK ballistic missile if it flies in the direction of Russia. "Our air defense, missile defense system and tracking system are fully equipped for this," Interfax quoted him as saying. The United States and South Korea claimed that the DPRK has moved a long-range ballistic missile to a west coast launch site in preparation for a possible test launch within days.

The DPRK conducted a series of short-range missile launches after its May 25 nuclear test, threatening to beef up its deterrence potential to counter what it calls hostile U.S. policies.

On the eve of North Korean naval exercises, President Obama has extended economic sanctions against Pyongyang for another year, heightening tensions over the communist state's nuclear and missile programs. The military drills begin tomorrow and run through July 10. Singapore says no notice on tracked NKorean ship
Singapore's maritime and port authority said Thursday it has not received any information that a North Korean ship being tracked by the US military had requested to dock in the city-state.

Since it left the western North Korean port of Nampo on June 17, the Kang Nam 1 has been shadowed by a US Navy destroyer under UN sanctions on suspicion of carrying missiles or related parts. South Korea's YTN television news channel, citing an unnamed intelligence source, has said the 2,000-tonne ship was heading for Myanmar via Singapore.

"The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore has not been informed of any intention by Kang Nam 1 to call at the Port of Singapore," the authority said in a statement. Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said last week that the government will take action if it is true that the vessel is carrying materials banned under UN sanctions.

"Singapore takes seriously the non-proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD), their means of delivery and related materials," the foreign ministry said. "If the allegation is true, Singapore will act appropriately."

Media reports had said the ship might make a stop in Singapore to refuel.

North Korea threatens to shoot down Japanese planes

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea threatened Saturday to shoot down any Japanese planes that intrude into its airspace, accusing Tokyo of spying near one of its missile launch sites.

The North has designated a no-sail zone off its eastern coast from June 25 to July 10 for military drills, raising concerns that it might test-fire short- or mid-range missiles in the coming days, in violation of a U.N. resolution.

North Korea's air force said Japan's E-767 surveillance aircraft conducted aerial espionage near the Musudan-ri missile site on its northeast coast Wednesday and Thursday.

The country's official Korean Central News Agency said the air force "will not tolerate even a bit the aerial espionage by the warmongers of the Japanese aggression forces but mercilessly shoot down any plane intruding into the territorial air of the (North) even 0.001 mm."

Officials of Japan's Air Self-Defense Force were not immediately available for comment Saturday.

The threat against alleged Japanese aerial espionage is rare, though the North has regularly complained of U.S. spy missions in its airspace.

Japan is very sensitive to North Korea's missile programs, as its islands lie within easy range. In 1998, a North Korean missile flew over Japan's main island. Tokyo has since spent billions of dollars on developing a missile shield with the United States and has launched a series of spy satellites primarily to watch developments in North Korea.

But in April, another rocket flew over Japan's main island, drawing a strong protest from Tokyo. Pyongyang claims it put a satellite into orbit, while the U.S. and its allies say it was really a test of the country's long-range missile technology.

The launch was one of a series of missile tests in recent months, and the communist regime has further raised tensions by conducting a second underground nuclear test. Its actions have drawn harsh international condemnation and new U.N. sanctions
