quote:Formula 1 » Webber denies 'Lewis will kill' comments.
Saturday, 18th October 2008
Mark Webber has moved to correct quotes, twisted by the media, that suggested he was branding Lewis Hamilton a threat to life.Mark Webber has lashed out at sections of the media he feels have twisted comments he made in the Shanghai paddock on the eve of this weekend's Chinese Grand Prix to suit the current anti-Lewis Hamilton agenda.
The Australian, who confirmed that the GPDA intended to talk to Hamilton, asked the BBC's Radio Five Live station to broadcast a clarification of statements attributed to him after he spoke to journalists on Thursday, insisting that a lot of positive comment on the McLaren driver had been left out of newspaper reports in favour of references to the death of a marshal at Monza in the 2000 season.
Webber, commenting on the current debate over Hamilton's aggressive driving style, had moved on from discussing the Briton's habit of moving around in the braking area of corners to refer to the tragic death of Paolo Ghislimberti, which came as the result of two cars touching wheels in similar circumstances. He insists, however, that, at no point, did he brand Hamilton a threat to anyone's life.
"I know I never said the word 'kill'," Webber, who was forced onto the grass by Hamilton at this year's Italian GP, claimed, "It's clear there have been a few manoeuvres in the braking area that some of us have not agreed with, and I used Monza eight years ago as an example of that type of situation where we can have cars flying through the air.
"I said a lot of positive stuff about Lewis. [I'm] very disappointed at those headlines, I'm disappointed with the press. They come to you for your expertise and experience and, sometimes, they slate you."
Hamilton also received a little support after his frustrating Japanese Grand Prix appearance last weekend from BMW Sauber's Nick Heidfeld. The German, team-mate to one of Hamilton's biggest critics of late, Robert Kubica, told BBC Sport that he felt the McLaren driver had been unfairly punished for his move at the first corner.

By Ian Parkes, PA Sport, Shanghai
Lewis Hamilton has found a surprise ally in world title rival Felipe Massa as he faces a storm of controversy surrounding his aggressive driving style. The two men may be scrapping over this season's championship, but Massa can understand Hamilton's approach, one that has attracted a great deal of criticism.
Robert Kubica, Fernando Alonso, Kimi Raikkonen, Mark Webber, Jarno Trulli, and today Flavio Briatore, have all lined up over the past few days to have their say about McLaren driver Hamilton. It leaves the 23-year-old facing not only a fight to cling onto his five-point lead over Massa, but also one to protect his reputation. Yet Massa can appreciate how, with the title on the line, an aggressive attitude can occasionally be the right way to go.
"That is Lewis," said Massa, who knows Hamilton can become champion on Sunday if the Briton wins the Chinese Grand Prix and he finishes no higher than fifth.
"That is his personality - to be aggressive and to always be over-confident.
"It doesn't mean he cannot be good, cannot be competitive or cannot be strong because of that.
"Everybody knows he is very strong and these things, in many races, have given him a lot of points.
"Sometimes we have seen that an aggressive style helps a lot, but then we have also seen many times it does not help.
"I have had some races this season where I have been very, very aggressive and had a good result at the end of the day, same with Lewis.
"Then there have been some races where I have not been aggressive, but it was the right thing to do at that moment.
"That is the way I think, and whether you have an aggressive style or not, it doesn't change anything.
"It can maybe be good or bad, but you only know at the end of the race, you never know before."
Given the general feeling of antipathy towards Hamilton within the paddock, it is unsurprising the majority of drivers are currently rooting for Massa.
That leaves the 27-year-old from Sao Paulo a little embarrassed, but grateful all the same for the show of support from his peers.
"It makes me feel proud," said Massa, smiling.
"I always respect other drivers, and I always respect everyone who is racing against me. That is the way I am, the way I do my job.
"When you are in F1 you can never underestimate your competitors because everyone knows what they are doing, they are all strong, and they all won something before.
"That is why I think respect is the most important thing for the other drivers."
quote:Formula 1 » Ecclestone: 'Dirty tricks' will be punished.
Friday, 17th October 2008
F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has made it clear that 'dirty tricks' will not be tolerated in the final two races of the 2008 F1 campaign, as Lewis Hamilton, Felipe Massa, Robert Kubica, Fernando Alonso and Sébastien Bourdais continue to trade blows off-track...
Bernie Ecclestone has called for a ‘hard but fair' approach from the Formula 1 World Championship contenders, their teams, team-mates and allies in the final two races of the 2008 campaign, as off-track hostilities threaten to spill over onto the circuit.
In the wake of the contentious Japanese Grand Prix last weekend, Felipe Massa blamed both McLaren-Mercedes title rival Lewis Hamilton and Scuderia Toro Rosso's Sébastien Bourdais for his clashes with the pair – despite the general paddock consensus being that the Brazilian had been at fault on both occasions – whilst former double F1 World Champion Fernando Alonso has vowed to ‘help' the Ferrari star to clinch the laurels if he can.
Moreover, BMW-Sauber ace Robert Kubica blasted Hamilton's driving as being both ‘dangerous' and ‘too much', as the Briton accused Massa of a ‘deliberate' attempt to take him out at Fuji Speedway.
With tensions running increasingly high as the showdown closes in – with just the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai this weekend and the Brazilian Grand Prix finale at Interlagos a fortnight later left on the calendar – and suggestions race stewards, team-mates and ‘allies' could come into play to determine the eventual destiny of the crown, the sport's ringmaster Ecclestone has demanded that everybody play fair.
“We want fair play at all times,” the 77-year-old told the Gulf News newspaper. “Hard and close racing, yes, but fair play too, without drivers being put in danger.
“The wider world is watching and awaiting the outcome of what has turned into a great championship. We don't want it spoiled and we will crack down on any dirty tricks.”

FOUR TOP TITLE CONTENDERS SPEAK OUT
Lewis Hamilton has brushed aside Fernando Alonso's promise to help Ferrari's Felipe Massa win the 2008 Formula 1 title, saying it was none of his business what other drivers did.
Hamilton will be crowned champion at the Chinese GP this weekend if he scores six points more than Massa, his closest rival, in the penultimate race of the season.
Alonso was upstaged by Hamilton when they were team mates in 2007 and since his return to Renault has done little to hide his animosity for McLaren and the man who could replace him as F1's youngest champion.
Hamilton said of Alonso's comments: "I don't really have an opinion. I focus on my job and the most important thing this weekend is to be competitive and try to earn some points.
"What the others do is none of my business."
Hamilton looked isolated on a news conference platform with Alonso, Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen and the third remaining title contender Robert Kubica, who criticised Hamilton's driving last week.
Alonso has won the previous two races and was in ebullient form. He was in no mood to backtrack on his comments about favouring Massa despite Hamilton's presence.
He said: "You cannot misunderstand what I said. My best relationship, for example, is with Robert. I would like to see him win the championship but I know that it will be difficult to make up 12 points.
"I will drive my own race, but after the race you would prefer some drivers to win or some teams to win compared to others. You can take whatever from my comments but it's very simple."
BMW driver Kubica said the main purpose of his comments about Hamilton's tactics at Monza had been to highlight dangerous overtaking moves.
He said: "I didn't comment on Lewis, I just said these kinds of moves are pretty dangerous, especially in the wet."
A subdued Hamilton said he'd recovered from a disappointing race in Japan last week, where a poor start from pole and a collision with Massa left him without any points.
He qualified in pole position at Shanghai in 2007 but failed to score any points after skidding off.
He said: "I feel as strong here as I always do, we still have two races and I still have a great opportunity to make the next step.
"The team and I have recollected ourselves and are moving forward. We'll see what happens, we'll give it our best shot." - Reuters

October 16, 2008 - By Nick Mulvenney
Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso, who have won the last three Formula 1 World titles between them, have backed the idea of recruiting ex-drivers to help with stewarding.
Penalties handed out at the 2008 Japanese were the latest in a string of decisions that have led to calls for an overhaul of officiating.
Renault's Alonso and Ferrari's Raikkonen, speaking at a news conference on Thursday before this weekend's Chinese GP, said the most important improvement would be consistent punishments for the same infringements. - Reuters

En:quote:Penalty for Webber, Coulthard blocked
It has been a good qualifying session for Red Bull Racing driver Mark Webber at Shanghai today. The Aussie placed his car 6th on tomorrow's grid but due to an engine change, he will get a ten-place grid penalty. Team mate David Coulthard didn't make it into Q2 as he was blocked by BMW's Nick Heidfeld.
Mark Webber, Position 6th
(Mark will drop ten places on the grid tomorrow, due to an engine change)
"Unfortunately a penalty for an engine change drops you five rows back - and it's difficult enough anyway these days with the field being so tight. In Fuji I would have had a chance to make up some places during the race, as it's easier to pass there, but there are some really quick corners here making it more difficult. Let's hope for some rain tomorrow."
David Coulthard, Position 16th
(David will move up a place tomorrow, due to Mark's engine change penalty)
"I'm extremely disappointed with what Nick Heidfeld did at the end of Q1 on the last out lap. All the cars were bunching up on the second to last corner, as they jostled for position, but Nick suddenly passed me on the inside into the last corner, just as I was about to start my flying lap. It was very unlikely he was going to do a better lap on prime tyres and he was on the dirty side of the track, so he wouldn't have done a faster lap by squeezing through the inside at that point - and he came in
before the end of that lap anyway! He would have known he was in the top ten already, so for me it was very un-sportsman like behaviour, as all he did was screw up my last flying lap - there wasn't any intention of him doing a quicker time."
Christian Horner: "Despite losing track time with an engine failure in this morning's practice, Mark did a good job to finish P6 in today's qualifying session. Unfortunately he takes a grid penalty tomorrow due to the engine failure and subsequent engine change, but it was a good lap from him. David had the pace to go through to Q2, but an incident with Heidfeld cost him time on his last run and, with the circuit improving, unfortunately he just missed the cut."
Fabrice Lom, Renault, Principal Engineer, Track Support: "We are very sorry for Mark and apologise to him for the engine failure. It's a shame as he had good pace today and easily got through in to Q3 to finish P6. David was blocked during Q1, so wasn't able to show his real pace today. It wasn't a good day, I hope Sunday will be better."

18 October 2008
David Coulthard was not amused after Saturday's qualifying session. The Scot was held up by Nick Heidfeld going into his final flying lap in order to try and improve his fastest lap time. Coulthard didn't manage to improve his lap time and so he missed out on Q2.
After the qualifying Coulthard didn't make a secret of it he wasn't happy with Heidfeld. Coulthard said: "I'm extremely disappointed with what Nick Heidfeld did at the end of Q1 on the last out lap. All the cars were bunching up on the second to last corner, as they jostled for position, but Nick suddenly passed me on the inside into the last corner, just as I was about to start my flying lap. quote:Heidfeld moves back to ninth
OCTOBER 18, 2008
Nick Heidfeld has been bumped back to ninth on the grid after the FIA Stewards intervened once again and and ruled that the German had got in the way of David Coulthard's Red Bull late in the Q1 session. The two men were both trying to ensure that they moved through to the Q2 session. Coulthard complained that he had been slowed down by Heidfeld's manoeuvre and that this had caused him to miss out. The stewards took several hours to reach a conclusion - which is odd given that one of the reasons given for the removal of permanent steward Tony Scott Andrews at the end of last year was that decision took too long. The decision does not help Coulthard at all as he remains in 15th place but it does move Sebastian Vettel, Jarno Trulli and Sebastien Bourdais up one place on the grid.
Heidfeld was given another three-place penalty just two races ago in Singapore but some others have had five-place penalties.
