ROMAN Abramovich, the Russian billionaire, has been taking soundings over selling Chelsea football club to Gulf Arabs.
Representatives of the oligarch have travelled to Saudi Arabia and Dubai to elicit interest in the club, Gulf sources have told The Sunday Times.
At least one of the meetings was with members of the Saudi royal family. There has been no evidence so far of a potential buyer.
The Middle East has become the cash cow for British football teams. Sheikh Mansour of Abu Dhabi, the owner of Manchester City, hopes to sign the Brazilian star Kaka from AC Milan in a deal that could cost up to £243m in payments and salary.

One source said: “Abramovich’s team have been out in the Middle East sounding out what interest there is in buying the club.” Chelsea insisted last night that Abramovich was still fully committed to the club on which he has lavished hundreds of millions of pounds. A Chelsea spokesman said it was “total nonsense” that the Russian was willing to sell the club.
He bought Chelsea for about £60m in 2003, taking over £80m in debts, and has since provided at least £500m in loans to buy new players. Sources say that if Abramovich can recoup his money, he might now be ready to sell after five years in which he turned Chelsea into a Champions League side that has twice won the English Premier League.
Chelsea reached their first Champions League final last season and Abramovich watched as they were beaten in a penalty shoot-out by Manchester United in Moscow in May. He was absent from last weekend’s 3-0 defeat by United, which many feel will pave the way for Chelsea’s rivals to win the Premier League for a third successive year.
Yesterday he left his seat at Stamford Bridge with 15 minutes of the game remaining with Chelsea losing 1-0 at home to lowly Stoke. It took two late goals to secure victory.
City sources believe it would cost at least £800m to buy out Abramovich when the “going rate” for a Champions League side is about £500m. Mansour was able to snap up Manchester City for about £200m.
Abramovich’s wealth has fallen sharply in the down-turn. Philip Beresford, who compiles The Sunday Times Rich List, conservatively estimates that Abramovich has lost £3 billion from his £11.7 billion fortune.
City experts question whether he may have a short-term problem with liquidity and needs cash. Some of Chelsea’s superstars are paid £120,000 a week.

Chelsea star John Mikel Obi has been charged with drink-driving.
The midfielder was arrested at 0530 GMT on 24 January on Fulham Road in Chelsea, west London.
Mikel, who lives in Weybridge, Surrey, has been charged with driving while over the drink-drive limit and will appear in court in April.
He was not part of the team which beat Ipswich 3-1 at home in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday afternoon.
The Nigerian star is due to appear at West London Magistrates' Court on 3 April.

Een groep internationale investeerders bereid een bod voor op Chelsea. Dat heeft Holger Heims, een Duitse zakenman, bevestigd.
De Duitser maakte bekend dat hij en een groep van zes of zeven investeerders uit Europa, het Midden-Oosten en Aziė samen een bod gaan uitbrengen op Chelsea. In de club kapitaalkrachtigen zit ook Sulaiman al-Fahim, een van de mensen achter de overname van Manchester City.
Hoeveel de investeerders op tafel willen leggen is niet bekend. Geschat wordt dat Chelsea op dit moment zo'n 900 miljoen euro waard is. De huidige eigenaar van Chelsea is Roman Abramovich (foto). Heims zegt nog niet met de Rus om tafel te hebben gezeten. "Maar we willen geen vijandige overname. Dit is alleen mogelijk als een vriendelijke deal."

Abramovich heeft meerdere malen laten weten nog lang niet klaar te zijn met Chelsea, hij zit er ook pas net 5 jaar. En hij is niet de typische investeerder die verder persoonlijk niet bij de club betrokken is.
Misschien krijg ik hem dalijk op mn neus als de club wel verkocht wordt, maar voorlopig neem ik het niet al te serieus.

Ja, dit seizoen helaas nog weinig dat koppel in actie kunnen zien. Alex of Ivanovic moeten Torres dan maar koest houden

Vind Ivanovic wel een goede trouwens.. die moet vaker met Terry spelen, kan die nog veel beter worden met zo'n persoonlijkheid naast zich. Vond em altijd erg sterk bij Lokomotiv.

Kalou is niet de eerste voetballer die mogelijk in opspraak komt. De FA oordeelde vorig jaar dat Ipswich Town-speler David Norris een boete moest betalen omdat hij na het vieren van een doelpunt steun betuigde aan voormalig ploeggenoot Luke McCormick. De doelman werd tot zeven jaar en vier maanden gevangenis veroordeeld omdat hij dronken achter het stuur stapte en een dodelijk ongeluk veroorzaakte.

Quaresma has 24 caps for Portugal and played under Scolari at Euro 2008
Chelsea have signed Portugal winger Ricardo Quaresma on loan from Inter Milan until the end of the season.
The 25-year-old rejoins Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari, who was his national coach with Portugal.
Quaresma was Inter manager Jose Mourinho's first signing when he joined from Barcelona for £15m in the summer of 2008.
But the winger has struggled at the San Siro and was left out of Inter's Champions League squad on Sunday.
He has only played 12 times this season and was heckled by his own fans during the 1-1 draw with Torino.
Chelsea have struggled for wide men since losing Joe Cole for the rest of the season with knee ligament damage, and Scolari has decided to look to another of the Portugal players he worked with at Euro 2008.
The former Sporting Lisbon, Barcelona and Porto winger becomes Chelsea's sixth Portuguese player alongside Ricardo Carvalho, Deco, Paulo Ferreria, Jose Bosingwa and goalkeeper Hilario.
Quaresma, nicknamed "Mustang" for his speed and power, began his career with Sporting Lisbon where he won the Portuguese championship in 2001/2002 playing alongside Cristiano Ronaldo.

Luiz Felipe Scolari has been dismissed as manager of Chelsea Football Club today (Monday) with immediate effect.
The Chelsea board would like to place on record our gratitude for his time as manager.
Felipe has brought many positives to the club since he joined and we all feel a sense of sadness that our relationship has ended so soon.
Unfortunately the results and performances of the team appeared to be deteriorating at a key time in the season.
In order to maintain a challenge for the trophies we are still competing for we felt the only option was to make the change now.
The search for a new manager has already started and we hope to have someone in place as soon as possible.
While that continues Assistant Coach Ray Wilkins will take charge of the team on a temporary basis.
