FOOTBALL MANAGER LIVE - PROJECT UPDATE

Now that Football Manager Live has been through more than eight months of intensive play and scrutiny from thousands of beta testers, we’ve got a much clearer picture of how the game will play when the playing public finally get their managerial mitts on it - and it’s looking very exciting indeed.

In the last couple of weeks, two new gameworlds have launched with 1,000 managers in each of them and, with the existing 4 each comprising between 500 and 1,000 managers, there are now a total of over 5,000 people making sure that every minute detail in this colossal project is perfectly polished.

To get the inside word on the project, we caught up with Marc Duffy, product manager at Sports Interactive, to grill him about Football Manager Live. You can read the Q&A here.

TAILOR-MADE

In gameworld 3, named “Tonton” after the wunderkind from a classic Sports Interactive footy game, a new federation called Ultimate Football league, has been created with two full seasons being played each calendar month rather than the normal standard one. This was created by the managers themselves, after a number of them wanted a more demanding fixture list, and so it came to be. The fact that at this stage, pre-launch, there is this much freedom shows just how much potential there will be for you, the gamers, to make the playing experience customised just for you.

NEW FEATURES

Two new features that have attracted a lot of attention are ‘Skills’ and ‘Achievements’. Under a manager’s profile, there is now a list of around 100 skills to be learnt, broken down into four categories: coaching, management, physiotherapy and scouting. The skills themselves range from the more general, i.e. ‘first team coaching’ to the very specific, like ‘head injuries’ (treating, not causing!), and have five levels to complete.

They all have an impact on gameplay; a manager who is skilled at ‘passing coaching’ will improve their players’ passing stats at a greater rate than managers who have focused their skills elsewhere. Each skill takes a pre-defined time to learn, with higher-level skills taking considerably longer to complete. So while you may be able to add ‘set-piece coaching level one’ to your managerial CV in 40 minutes, it will take you 27 days to get ‘judging potential level 5’.

A manager can only be learning one skill at a time, so deciding what skills to learn and in which order has become a crucial part of the game. Many new and hidden features also become visible after certain skills are learned, with SI promising to add more during the life of the game.…

Achievements will be familiar to any X-box live players, and display in a manager’s profile what managerial feats they have accomplished- highest number of goals in a match, the number of games he has managed to go without defeat, and so on. Next to the achievement is the number of other managers who have attained the same success. There’s a real sense of having done something special when you unlock an achievement that is very rare and sets you apart from the other managers playing the game. Try going 10 games without conceding a goal, for instance!

Marc’s mention of the brand new FML website suggests that it could be as engrossing as the game itself, offering a whole extra dimension to the playing experience that Football Manager Live provides. Make sure you scout the 'net carefully as we can reveal that the launch is imminent...
