Enough with the Rudolph and Frosty Claymation specials! Oh, who am I kidding? I love them just as much as the next guy, but it's time to start thinking about some real TV again, now that the New Year is upon us. Thank goodness, a slew of new shows and returning faves will be premiering in the coming month. (Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.)

We've got all the premieres listed below in order of airdate, along with the dish about which January newbies are—and aren't—worth watching. Allow me to break it down for ya...then mark your calendars, rev up your TiVos and get ready to get back on that couch!

Dirt (FX), Jan. 2
You know the dirt that gets so deep under your fingernails you can't seem to get it out no matter how hard you scrub? Well, that exact feeling came to mind while watching the first three episodes of FX's new show Dirt, and unfortunately, that's not meant as an endorsement. The show is just icky—and not in a good way like Nip/Tuck or Dexter. You'll feel like you need a shower. The biggest problem? Not a single character on the show is even remotely likable. I really wanted to enjoy this series—after all, it is Courteney Cox (who doesn't love her?) and a fantastic premise (tabloid journalism is so now) but unfortunately—at least for this viewer—Dirt does not live up to its promise.

In Case of Emergency (ABC), Jan. 3
Thankfully, half of the Courtney Cox and David Arquette duo got things right, because although it's hardly the next Arrested Development or The Office, In Case of Emergency is actually pretty entertaining. Arquette stars as a businessman who wants to kill himself, but instead accidentally shoots his foot, sending him to meet a hot doctor played by Lori Laughlin. Arquette is just one-fourth of the equation here—the show is about a quartet of highly dysfunctional fortysomethings who went to high school together: Jonathan Silverman plays the insecure dweeb, Kelly Hu is the hot girl turned hooker and Greg Germann is the diet guru suffering a mental breakdown. The plot is a little predictable, and a few of the jokes need work, but Emergency is actually worth checking out.

Knights of Prosperity (ABC), Jan. 3
Donal Logue is back on television! And finally, it seems he may have found a show that lives up to his talent. While the first episode of Prosperity leaves plenty to be desired, the cast has chemistry, and the show gains momentum with each new ep. It could very well be a contender for your permanent DVR lineup. Logue plays a washed-up janitor who assembles a gang of would-be thieves (who are just about the least-savvy crooks around) to rob Mick Jagger

Beauty and the Geek (CW), Jan. 3
The geeks are gettin' some! That's right. According to executive producer Jason Goldberg, this season's cast is one saucy group. Not only does one of the ditzy babes fall for one of the socially challenged dorks, but apparently there's a sex scandal as well! "There were a lot of fireworks in the house this year for some reason," Jason tells me. Sounds a little more like The Real World than B&TG to me, but Jason insists the show is still sweet at its heart. "It's funny because it's competition based and it has money at the end of it, but [the contestants] are actually there because they want the experience. That's what's different about this show. It's really humbling for people to admit their weaknesses and learn their strengths and ultimately celebrate who they are."

The L Word (Showtime), Jan. 7
Perhaps the most underappreciated series on Showtime returns with a lot of heat for its fourth season. It picks up right where the finale left off, with Bette on the run with Angelica, and Tina desperate to find her ex-lover and their daughter. Things only get crazier from there, with a breakup, a bad car wreck and a "gift" for Shane that turns her world upside-down—all within the first episode.

The Apprentice (NBC), Jan. 7
The Donald is back, and so is the hair! But Carolyn and George are history—and so is the show's former backdrop of New York City. In their place is this glorious place we call Hell-Ay (or L.A.), and the new boardroom babe is none other than Trump's own offspring, Ivanka. And of course, there is a new twist. Along with Donald and Ivanka, each week's winning team leader will be alongside to make the deciding factor on who is fired. But aside from the location and personnel change, everything else is pretty much Apprentice status quo—so bring on the backstabbing, crying and bitchery!

24 (Fox), Jan. 14
Of course, after its Emmy win and amazing fifth season, this new season of 24 is the most highly anticipated debut of January, and I promise you will not be disappointed. Not only will there be plenty of twists in Jack's family department, but Kiefer gets down and dirty, gritty and unshaven. This is not action-hero Jack but possibly deranged Jack, and the sixth season takes on an edgier tone than ever before. (I'll have much more for you on the new season in a 24 scoop extravaganza closer to the premiere!)

Extras (HBO), Jan. 14
So good. So good. Sooo good. That's what I can tell you about the first three episodes of the second season of HBO's Extras, which are so simultaneously cringe inducing and hilarious, you can't help but be thoroughly entertained. Ricky Gervais' alter ego Andy finally makes it big into his own show (a hokey, catch-phrase-laden "s--tcom"), and the success (or lack thereof) of the show provides a great through line, but as always, it's the guest stars that leave your jaw on the floor. Where else can you watch Orlando Bloom take the piss out of Johnny Depp (as he does in the first episode), David Bowie serenade a certain "little fat man" (second ep) or Daniel Radcliffe, aka Harry Potter, get his "Johnny" stuck in the hair of a veteran British actress (number three)? I am so in.

Rome (HBO), Jan. 14
Finally. The most addictive drama on HBO returns, after leaving us hanging with enough pulse-pounding, character-killing cliffhangers to set up a stellar second season. In case you haven't been keeping up on your history books, that dude Caesar really is dead, Marc Antony is livid and Octavio is stepping up in his role as heir apparent. But the most riveting (and heart-wrenching) drama comes from the mighty soldier Verenus, who goes off the deep end after burying his wife. As you may remember, she plummeted to her death after the Big V learned of her child with another man. Even if you didn't see season one, now is the time to catch up, because you have no idea what you've been missing.

The Hills (MTV), Jan. 15
Yes, the lowest common denominator of quality television—and the pinnacle of guilty pleasuredom—is back with a whole new season! I just caught up with Lauren Conrad (L.C.) herself, who revealed she has "a couple new love interests" this season. "Last season, we all had boyfriends," she explains. "And this season, we all start off single, so there is a lot more going out. I think we filmed, like, three times at clubs this last week—we do at least once a week going out. It's a lot more fun this year. You get to see me date, and I'm not very good at that. We [Audrina and Lauren] just went on a blind date together." Am I lame if I say I can't wait?

American Idol (Fox), Jan. 16
Have you heard of this show? Some guy named Ryan who works here told me it's good. I think I'm gonna check it out.

Monk (USA), Jan. 19
You know how Dexter Morgan channels his crazy into crime-solving do-goodism? Dude is just taking a page from Adrian Monk's book, and lucky for us, everybody's favorite obsessive-compulsive gumshoe is back on the case. Unlike Dexter, however, Monk has a certain charming throwback quality—it's not revolutionary television, but it's always fun—and it consistently delivers a great slate of guest stars. In the coming eps, look for Andy Richter as Monk's brand-new BFF (comedy gold, people!) and Sean Astin as a creepy Natalie-stalking murder suspect. The writers also have fun incorporating Traylor Howard's real-life pregnancy into the plot.

Psych (USA), Jan. 19
James Roday, where have you been all our lives? Roday as ESP fakester Shawn Spencer is a hidden gem of funnyosity, and Dulé Hill is now on his umpteenth year of stellar straight-man work (Martin Sheen's President Bartlet was his first foil). Throw in Corbin Bernsen as Shawn's perpetually annoyed cop dad, and you've got a recipe for a very funny detective show. The Santa Barbara-based cop series returns with Kurtwood Smith ("Red" from That '70s Show) guesting as an Alzheimer's-afflicted ex-cop who seeks Shawn's help in putting together the clues he can't find inside his own head.

FOX Develops 'Smarter' Thursday Plan
Quiz show will get an 'Idol' lead-in for multiple episodes

Viewers anxious to discover if they are, in fact, smarter than a 5th grader will be able to find out on FOX starting at the end of February.

FOX announced on Wednesday (Jan. 31) that Mark Burnett's new game show "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" will begin a six-episode run starting at the end of February, as the network experiments with the quiz format in a number of time periods.

The network will air half-hour episodes starting at 9:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Feb. 27 and Wednesday, Feb. 28 in the cushy post-"American Idol" time periods. "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" will also get a post-"Idol" run with hour-long Thursday episodes on March 1 and March 8 at 9 p.m. The next two weeks, March 15 and March 22, FOX will let the show lead off the night at 8 p.m. If viewers stick around for those last two episodes, you can count on FOX bringing it back.

The show focuses on knowledge that most American adults had at one point, but may have forgotten. Grownups will be quizzed on subjects they would have studied in grade school, with questions coming from actual 1st grade through 5th grade math, science, history and geography text books. If the adults are stumped, there's some provision for them to cheat and ask actual grade-schoolers the answer.

"Whereas most game shows in an odd way measure how smart you are, our contestants are going to be measured about how dumb they are," FOX Entertainment President Peter Liguori boasted to reporters earlier this month. "These are going to be questions you might ask your kids, where they will rattle off an answer like that, but given how distant we are from a 5th grade education, actually wind up being a bit tougher. We've seen the show through a couple of run-throughs. It is very funny. When Mark Burnett wound up pitching this show to each network president, in fact, only one network president left the six questions with money, which I think is a real glaring indictment against the intelligence of the people who sit in front of you here, but it also shows the fun of the show."

In case you're curious, Liguori claims to have been the only network president to have come out on top.

The FOX press release offered a trio of sample questions:

"Engagement" earns laughs playing by the rules

That the CBS midseason entrant "Rules of Engagement" is undeniably funnier than most members of the couples-sitcom genre is to damn it with faint praise.

Are all white guys who are in relationships with women destined to be hardcore slobs obsessed with sex, sports and suds? Are all of the women who love them somehow glib, intuitively wise, exceedingly tolerant and overly emotional?

This is the world built by the traditional primetime broadcast network comedy, and it's perhaps why the form itself is in crisis. It needs a new hook, and "Rules" ain't it. On the other hand, it does have some clever lines, and any show that co-stars Patrick Warburton ("The Tick," "Seinfeld's" Puddy) and David Spade ("The Showbiz Show," "Just Shoot Me") is nothing if not well cast. So kudos to casting directors Leslie Litt and Suzanne Goddard Smythe for having the good sense to get these guys.

Warburton in particular is a comic gold mine, based on his bone-dry monotone delivery alone. I'd pay to hear him read a wine list, and would no doubt laugh heartily at it. In "Rules," he plays Jeff, a deadpan lug who has been married for 12 years to feisty Audrey (Megyn Price) and thus looks at the world through beer-colored glasses. He's always trying to figure out ways to combine sports and romance, or at least retain his tenuous hold on his masculinity.

On the other side of their apartment building, we have Adam (Oliver Hudson of "The Mountain") and Jennifer ("Dawson's Creek" alumna Bianca Kajlich), newly engaged and thus still really hot for each other in a way that Jeff and Audrey seem to be only on special occasions like birthdays.

Completing this motley quintet is Russell (Spade), who is single and thus a horndog commitment-phobe. (This is another network comedy rule: If you're a straight guy and aren't in a relationship, it is because you are constitutionally incapable of intimacy and therefore mask it with wisecracks.) Russell is Adam's best friend, and in the real world they are too different to have any realistic bonding potential. But this being TV, they're tight, and Spade's dependable cynicism and impeccable timing deliver the goods nicely.

In fact, there is really nothing all that wrong with the first couple of episodes supplied for review. The concept is to illustrate "different phases of the male/female relationship" (as in new, not so new and not anything). In the pilot penned by executive producer Tom Hertz, Adam and Jennifer have just gotten engaged, and Jeff warns Adam that he had better establish some rules or risk having his manhood erased. "She wanted a cat, and I didn't, so we compromised," he explains. "We got the cat." A second episode is sillier and less believable but has more of Warburton's sad-sack attitude, so it's easy to forgive.

Again, "Rules" is rife with attitude and snappy dialogue and the requisite mega-attractive characters. But there is a reason that the half-hour comedy as we've long known it plays like yesterday's news, and this show unfortunately embodies the same stale, cliche-riddled, boys-will-be-boys dynamic that the tube too often uses to pigeonhole adult relationship issues. White males remain the last group in America that you can pretty much smack around with impunity -- simple-minded, testosterone-driven doofs that they are -- and while you can still mine a few laughs from that, the calories being dispensed in the process are decidedly empty ones.

Michael Ealy"Sleeper Cell" star Michael Ealy is moving from Showtime to ABC, taking a part in the Guy Ritchie-directed pilot "Suspect."

Another fairly good-sized group of actors has signed up for pilot duty, including Matthew Lillard in "Area 52," Chris Wiehl in "Lipstick Jungle" and Christopher Sieber in "Wildlife," all at NBC; and Dina Waters in the ABC comedy "Family of the Year."

Ealy earned a Golden Globe nomination this year for "Sleeper Cell," in which he played an FBI agent who infiltrates a terrorist group. He'll play a dedicated cop in "Suspect," according to The Hollywood Reporter. The show is a crime drama that will introduce viewers to possible suspects in a case, then narrow them down to the actual criminal.

In addition to "Sleeper Cell," Ealy appeared in both "Barbershop" movies, "2 Fast 2 Furious" and the ABC film "Their Eyes Were Watching God."

Also at ABC, Waters ("Six Feet Under," "Just Like Heaven") has signed on to "Family of the Year," about a New Mexico family whose string of honors as their town's No. 1 clan is challenged by some new neighbors. Waters will play the wife in the rival family.

Lillard (the "Scream" films, "Scooby-Doo") will star in NBC's comedy "Area 52," about government employees at a secret facility in the desert. He's set to play an Air Force colonel who's in charge of watching over a captured alien.

In "Lipstick Jungle," Wiehl ("Love Monkey") will play the husband of Brooke Shields' character, while Sieber ("Spamalot," "It's All Relative") will play a zookeeper in "Wildlife," a comedy set at an animal park.

Rules of Engagement is best leuk. Nog niet helemaal overtuigd ervan, maar ik heb me er wel mee vermaakt. Doet me ook heel erg aan de serie What About Brian denken (ook een erg leuk tussendoortje trouwens). Daar start het dan met 3 koppels en 1 vrijgezel en heeft iets meer drama, RoE lijkt toch luchtiger. Leuke vent (qua rollen altijd) en zijn personage houdt iig de pilot toch levendig, zonder hem zou het wel saaier zijn vrees ik ("Whats up with the Bears, were you raised by them?" ) en dat is toch wel zonde voor zo'n komedie, het kan nl best leuk worden denk ik.

Perhaps stoked by the success of the new sitcom "Rules of Engagement," CBS has ordered up three additional comedy pilots.

The trio of fresh pilots come from a variety of recognizable figures, including Paul Reiser and "Will & Grace" creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick.

Reiser has written (but doesn't seem to be starring in) "Atlanta," a half-hour, single-camera comedy that both trade papers describe as being about a man and a woman who meet at a funeral and then can't avoid each other.

This is Reiser's second straight year with a comedy pilot at CBS, after a show starring Bobby Cannavale didn't make the cut last spring. The writer-producer-actor was nominated for 10 Emmys for "Mad About You" without a win.

Mutchnick and Kohan, writing partners, one of whom is straight, the other gay, have gotten a pilot order for an untitled show about writing partners, one of whom is straight, the other gay. There's also a woman involved in some way. Recent credits for the scribes include "Four Kings" and "Good Morning, Miami."

Also in the mix at CBS is "The Rich Inner Life of Penelope Cloud," from "Friends" veteran Jeff Greenstein. The multicamera comedy, about a former literary star who experiences a major change of attitude, has been given a cast contingent pilot order.

William Baldwin has already starred on one TV series this season, but viewers never got to see it. He'll take another shot this spring, this time at ABC.

He's one of several actors signing on to ABC pilots, along with Swoosie Kurtz ("Huff"), Christopher Titus ("Titus") and Eric Christian Olsen ("The Loop"). NBC, meanwhile, has inked Brian Benben ("Dream On"), Julian Sands ("24"), David Alan Basche ("United 93"), David Norona and Kelvin Yu.

Baldwin ("The Squid and the Whale") has joined ABC's drama pilot "Dirty Sexy Money," about an idealistic lawyer (Peter Krause) and the rich family he works for. Baldwin will play a member of that family, a senator with some secrets he'd rather keep secret.

He starred with Joe Pantoliano in CBS' picked up-but-unaired drama "Waterfront" this season and in the indie film "Adrift in Manhattan," which debuted at Sundance last month. He also appears in "Park" and "American Fork," both of which are screening at the HBO Comedy Arts Festival this week.

Also at ABC, comedian Titus will star with Michael Vartan and Dylan McDermott in an untitled drama about four high-level businessmen who are friends. Peyton List ("Windfall") has also been cast as McDermott's daughter.

Kurtz will play series lead Lee Pace's aunt in "Pushing Daisies," in which Pace discovers he can resurrect the dead with his touch. She won a guest-acting Emmy in 1990 and has been nominated numerous other times, including each of the past two years for her work on "Huff."

Sullivan, coming off FOX's "The Loop," will star in an untitled comedy from former "Friends" writer-producer Shana Goldberg-Meehan. His credits also include "Beerfest" and "Tru Calling."

At NBC, Sands, Basche and Norona ("Six Feet Under") have all joined the drama "Lipstick Jungle." Sands will play the husband of Kim Raver's character and Basche her boss. Norona will play a co-worker of Brooke Shields' character.

Benben will co-star in the Peacock's comedy "The Mastersons of Manhattan," about two socialite sisters (Molly Shannon and Natasha Richardson). He'll play the attorney defending Shannon's character against murder charges.

Also, Yu ("Studio 60," "Grandma's Boy") has joined another NBC comedy, "Area 52."

Leslie Hope and Fred Willard have landed pilot gigs at FOX.

Hope will join the ensemble of the off-duty-cops drama "The Apostles," playing Dee, wife of an officer and mother of two, about to embark on a new legal career.

"The Apostles" brings Hope back to FOX, where she co-starred up until the final seconds of the first season of "24." Her recent series credits have included ABC's "Line of Fire" and The CW's "Runaway." She'll next appear in the Lifetime telefilm "Don't Cry Now," plus she's expected to direct a project for the cable network.

Meanwhile, Variety is reporting that Fred Willard has joined the network's "Action News" team, playing a sports anchor to Kelsey Grammer and Patricia Heaton's anchors.

While "Apostles" is going through the fully development season process, "Action News" is a sure thing, having already secured a 13-episode order.

Willard earned three Emmy nominations for his guest work on CBS' "Everybody Loves Raymond." His feature credits include the Christopher Guest films "Best in Show," "A Mighty Wind" and "For Your Consideration."

In other FOX casting news, Blake Shields ("Sleeper Cell") will join Anthony Anderson and Cole Hauser in the New Orleans buddy cop drama "K-Ville."

"The Matrix" star Carrie-Anne Moss has joined ABC's drama pilot "Suspect," marking her first television work in nearly a decade.

Moss will play a tough-but-tender police lieutenant in "Suspect," the showbiz trade papers repot. The Guy Ritchie-directed crime drama begins with a list of suspects in a case and narrows it down to the actual perpetrator. Ed Zuckerman ("Law & Order," "JAG") wrote the pilot and will executive produce with Ritchie, Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly.

Michael Ealy ("Sleeper Cell") and Charles S. Dutton ("Threshold") have previously been cast in the show, and Erik Palladino ("ER," "Over There") and Kathleen Munroe ("Beautiful People") have signed on as well..

The pilot will be Moss' first TV work since "The Matrix"; she had previously starred on "Models Inc." and a USA series called, coincidentally, "Matrix."

Her other film credits include "Memento," "The Chumscrubber" and "Disturbia," which is due in theaters in April.

FOX announced on Wednesday (Jan. 31) that Mark Burnett's new game show "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" will begin a six-episode run starting at the end of February, as the network experiments with the quiz format in a number of time periods.

The show focuses on knowledge that most American adults had at one point, but may have forgotten. Grownups will be quizzed on subjects they would have studied in grade school, with questions coming from actual 1st grade through 5th grade math, science, history and geography text books. If the adults are stumped, there's some provision for them to cheat and ask actual grade-schoolers the answer.

FX Reaps 'Riches' in March
Series takes perch on Monday nights

FX will try to stake out a spot on Monday nights this spring with its newest series, "The Riches."

The series, which stars Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver as married con artists with three kids, will premiere at 10 p.m. ET Monday, March 12. It's the first of FX's dramas to air on Monday nights; the cable network's other dramas have aired on Tuesday and Wednesday nights for the past few seasons.

The debut episode will run with fewer than the usual number of commercial breaks, thanks to Dimension Films and the Weinstein Company. The movie companies will use three ad spots to promote the film "Grindhouse," which is scheduled for release in early April.

Izzard ("Ocean's Twelve," "My Super Ex-Girlfriend") and Driver ("Grosse Pointe Blank," "Will & Grace") play Wayne and Dahlia Malloy, married "travelers" who live off the grid and make a living by conning other people. After Dahlia's release from prison, the couple and their three kids (Shannon Woodward, Noel Fisher and Aidan Mitchell) take on the identity of an upper-middle-class family, the Riches, in a gated community.

Playwright Dmitry Lipkin created the series and is an executive producer with Dawn Prestwich and Nicole Yorkin ("Brotherhood," "Carnivale"), Michael Rosenberg, Mark Morgan and Guy Oseary.

Emmy nominee Gregory Itzin ("24") will get a chance to show off his comedic chops in a pilot for ABC.

The veteran actor is among several folks joining comedies at the Alphabet, including Amy Yasbeck ("Wings") and Rachel Boston ("American Dreams"), according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Itzin will play a high-level executive in the comedy "Nice Girls Don't Get the Corner Office," about the struggles of the titular nice girl (Jayma Mays, "Heroes") in the corporate world. He earned an Emmy nod last year for his role as the oily President Charles Logan on FOX's "24" and reprised the part in recent weeks, although Logan's life appeared to be at least a little bit in jeopardy by the end of Monday's episode.

Although he's done primarily dramatic work in recent years, including appearances on "Star Trek: Enterprise" and "Judging Amy," Itzin has a number of comedy credits under his belt. He's appeared on "Friends" (as Paul Rudd's father), "Night Court," "Caroline in the City" and Comedy Central's "Strip Mall." Early in his career, he had a small role in the movie "Airplane!"

Also at ABC, Yasbeck and Boston have signed on to an untitled comedy about a local TV news department in Phoenix. Yasbeck, who co-starred in FOX's "Life on a Stick" a couple of seasons ago, will play a co-anchor of the newscast, while Boston, who has guested on "Grey's Anatomy" and "Crossing Jordan" this season, will play a go-getting young producer.

'Seinfeld' star cast in cop comedy

Former "Seinfeld" star Jason Alexander is looking to rejoin the sitcom game, signing on to a pilot at ABC.

Alexander has taken a role in a comedy set at a police precinct. Jillian Armenante and Sarah Lafleur have also joined the show, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Also at ABC, Wayne Wilderson has joined "The Thick of It," while The CW has signed Jud Tylor for its pilot "Dash 4 Cash."

The cop comedy, from British writer Victoria Pile ("Smack the Pony," "Green Wing") will deal mostly with the lives of the officers working in a robbery-homicide precinct. Alexander will guest-star in the pilot as an Internal Affairs officer, and his part will become recurring if the show goes to series.

A multiple Emmy nominee for playing George Costanza on "Seinfeld," Alexander has guest-starred on "Everybody Hates Chris" this season. His most recent series was CBS' "Listen Up," which ran during the 2004-05 season.

Armenante ("Judging Amy") and Lafleur will play detectives in the squad.

Wilderson, who had a recurring part on "The Office" earlier this season, will play a political blogger on "The Thick of It." He's also appeared on "The Steve Harvey Show" and "CSI."

Over at The CW, Tylor ("What About Brian," "That '70s Show") has joined "Dash 4 Cash," which is set behind the scenes of a reality show. She'll play one of the contestants.

BURBANK -- April 12, 2007 -- NBC announced the premieres for its original alternative programs in Summer 2007 that feature the return of last summer's hit "America's Got Talent" (with new host Jerry Springer) on May 29 as well as an updated edition of the hit series "Last Comic Standing" (with new host Bill Bellamy) on June 13 and the launch of "Age of Love" reality dating series (with host Mark Consuelos) on June 18. In addition, NBC will reprise the popular weight-loss series "The Biggest Loser" (with new host Alison Sweeney from NBC's "Days of our Lives") in late summer.

The announcements were made today by Craig Plestis, Executive Vice President, Alternative Programming and Development, NBC Entertainment.

"We have a strong hand to play this summer season with a proven stable of winning series from past summers," said Plestis. "Impressively, each returning show will have a fresh look with new hosts and the competitions on 'America's Got Talent,' 'Last Comic,' and 'Biggest Loser' will be even bigger and better than before. Likewise, we like what we see with the new 'Age of Love,' which could prove to be the breakout hit of the summer."

"America's Got Talent" will debut on Tuesday, May 29 (9-11 p.m. ET) with a two-hour season premiere, then will resume in its regularly scheduled time period the following Tuesday, June 5 (8 p.m. ET). "Last Comic Standing" will premiere on Wednesday, June 13 -- also with a two-hour premiere from 9-11 p.m. (ET) - then will regularly continue on Wednesdays starting June 20 (9-10 p.m. ET). The series will go on an international search looking for the funniest comic in the world.

"Age of Love," hosted by Mark Consuelos ("All My Children"), debuts on Monday, June 18 (10-11 p.m. ET). The exact day and time for the late-summer premiere of "The Biggest Loser" will be announced later.

Following are descriptions for NBC's summer alternative series in order of premiere dates.

From the producers of "American Idol" and Simon Cowell, "America's Got Talent" (May 29) was last summer's #1 new series. It premiered on June 21, 2006 with a 4.6 rating, 14 share in adults 18-49 and 12.4 million viewers overall, making it the #1 non-sports telecast on television for the week.

Bringing the variety format back to the forefront of American culture, "America's Got Talent" showcases the hottest performers from across the country, with the winner being chosen by the television viewing audience. Each week, the show features a colorful array of hopeful future stars -- singers, dancers, comedic performers and unique acts of all ages who have a chance to strut and perform in front of a panel of celebrity judges.

New host Springer is currently in his 16th season of hosting NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution's hit talk show "The Jerry Springer Show." Throughout his career, Springer also has been the mayor of Cincinnati, a political pundit, lawyer, newscaster, country recording artist, international emcee, television personality, movie star, Broadway actor, progressive talk-radio broadcaster - and even a competitor in the hugely popular television series "Dancing with the Stars."

NBC's unscripted laughfest "Last Comic Standing" (June 13) returns for a fifth season with new host Bill Bellamy, new talent scouts that include "Last Comic Standing" alumni Alonzo Bodden, ANT and Kathleen Madigan -- and an all new quest to find the funniest new comedian in the world. The Emmy Award-nominated series broadens its scope this season by searching internationally for the world's funniest comedian as it holds casting calls in London, Montreal and Sydney, Australia in addition to Los Angeles, New York, Minneapolis, San Antonio and Tempe, Arizona. Celebrity judges will also join the talent scouts as they search for the world's funniest new comic.

The fourth season of "Last Comic Standing" ranked as the #4 summer series overall in adults 18-49, with every telecast ranking in that week's top-seven in adults 18-49. Last year, it averaged a 3.6 rating, 10 share in adults 18-49 and 8.1 million viewers overall.

Comedian and actor Bellamy recently released his debut comedy DVD, "Bill Bellamy: Back to My Roots," which aired as a one-hour special on Comedy Central. He headlined the new season of "Def Comedy Jam," and starred in the comedy "Getting Played," the drama series "Fastlane," and in the comedy series "Men, Women & Dogs." His feature-film credits also include "Any Given Sunday," "Love Stinks" and "Love Jones."

Bodden won season three of "Last Comic Standing." A top headliner at comedy clubs nationwide, Bodden had his own half-hour comedy special on Comedy Central, and has appeared in "Bringin' Down the House," "The Girl Next Door," "Angel" and "Grounded for Life." Likewise, Ant was a contestant in season two and has also made appearances in every other season of the show as well. He is the host of "Celebrity Fit Club" and is a regular guest on NBC's "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno." Madigan also was a contestant on season two of the series and was voted Best Female Standup at the American Comedy Awards. NBC is bringing romance back to television this summer with the new reality dating series "Age of Love" (June 18), hosted by popular actor Mark Consuelos. The eight-episode series from 3 Ball Productions (NBC's "The Biggest Loser") features a new twist on the reality dating show format.

Consuelos' recent film credits include "My Super Ex-Girlfriend" starring opposite Uma Thurman and Luke Wilson, and last year's World War II action film, "The Great Raid." Logan Marshall-Green and Matthew Bomer of 'Traveler'The new ABC drama "Traveler," which had been ticketed for a playing-out-the-string summertime run, will get an in-season debut after all.

The network will air what it's calling a "sneak preview" of the pilot episode, which follows two friends who are framed for an act of terrorism, on Thursday, May 10, following "Grey's Anatomy." The show will have its regular premiere at 10 p.m. ET Wednesday, May 30, with a second showing of the pilot.

"Traveler" stars Logan Marshall-Green ("The O.C.") and Matthew Bomer ("Tru Calling") as Tyler Fog and Jay Burchell, grad-school roommates who, on a trip to New York, decide to play a prank and roller-blade through an art museum. Upon their exit, they receive a call from their buddy Will Traveler (Aaron Stanford, "X-Men: The Last Stand") who says, "Sorry -- I had to do this," just before the museum blows up.

Branded as domestic terrorists after security footage catches them in their prank, Tyler and Jay go on the run, simultaneously trying to clear their names and figure out why someone they believed to be a friend would set them up.

The scheduling of the "Traveler" preview and a couple other ABC moves also signals that "Men in Trees," which previously occupied the post-"Grey's" spot on Thursdays, won't be back before the 2006-07 season ends next month. The show has received a pickup for next season, however, so it's likely that the five unaired episodes will carry over to the fall.

ABC is airing a two-hour "Grey's Anatomy" on May 3. A "Lost" clip show will fill the spot on May 17 -- the final Thursday of sweeps -- and re-air prior to the "Lost" finale on Wednesday, May 23.

"Traveler" also stars Steven Culp ("Desperate Housewives"), Viola Davis ("Century City"), Anthony Ruvivar ("Third Watch") and William Sadler ("Wonderfalls"). David DiGilio ("Eight Below") wrote the pilot, which was directed by David Nutter ("Smallville," "Band of Brothers").

Derren Brown Project (Title TBD; New Series - Premieres July 25, 2007 @ 10 PM) - This July, SCI FI Channel will introduce America to mentalist Derren Brown, the British sensation described as "part James Bond, part Yoda." With numerous top-rated series and specials to his credit, Derren has astounded UK television audiences causing them to conclude that he knows your mind better than you do. SCI FI's original U.S. produced version of the Derren Brown Project (official title TBD) will consist of 6 jaw-dropping 1-hour episodes that must be seen to be believed. Flash Gordon (New Series - Premieres August 10, 2007) Placing a 21st century spin on a science fiction classic, SCI FI's contemporized version of Flash Gordon follows the all-new adventures of Flash (Eric Johnson) and his companions, Dale Arden and Dr. Hans Zarkov. Ordinary people thrust into extraordinary circumstances, they find themselves as Earth's last line of defense against the forces of the merciless dictator Ming. Produced by Reunion Pictures, this modern day retelling of the classic comic strip franchise will begin production in May. RHI Entertainment will be distributing the series internationally. Under an agreement with property owner King Features Syndicate, the new series is being produced by Matthew O'Connor and Tom Rowe. RHI's Robert Halmi, Sr. and Robert Halmi, Jr. (Tin Man, Mitch Albom's The Five People You Meet in Heaven, The Ten Commandments), who previously produced SCI FI's popular miniseries event Legend of Earthsea, will serve as Executive Producers on the series.

Ghost Hunters (New Episodes Premiere June 6, 2007 @ 9 PM) - In October 2004, SCI FI introduced Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson--plumbers by day, Ghost Hunters by night! Few comedy pilots eyed for pickup

It looks like the comedy drought on broadcast television might continue for at least another year.

Sources speculated that just a handful of new half-hour series -- as few as five -- might land on the fall schedules, with some nets potentially picking up only one or no new comedy series. Meanwhile, dramas are making another strong showing, with about a half-dozen projects vying for slots at most networks.

One comedy hopeful, ABC's "Sam I Am," and the CW's one-hour "Reaper" have inched closer to a series pickup as they have received permission to begin making staffing offers.

Meanwhile, NBC's hot sci-fi drama "The Bionic Woman," which received a thumbs up to begin staffing late last week, has tapped Glen Morgan for a two-year show deal to potentially serve as executive producer/co-showrunner with David Eick if the show is picked up to series as expected.

At ABC, in addition to "Sam," two other comedies have picked up momentum: the much-talked-about "Cavemen," based on the characters from the Geico commercials, and "Miss/Guided," which was shot months ago.

Additionally, there has been speculation that the robbery romp "The Knights of Prosperity," which was taken off the schedule, might return for a second season with "Everybody Loves Raymond" star Ray Romano as the new mark. Another freshman comedy, "Notes From the Underbelly," also is said to have a shot at coming back, along with veterans "George Lopez" and "According to Jim," with "Lopez" having the edge between the two.

"Pushing Daisies," the untitled Jon Feldman project, "Dirty Sexy Money," "Eli Stone," "Football Wives," "Cashmere Mafia" and "Marlowe" are among the strong candidates on the drama side.

The big guessing game at ABC is where on the schedule its "Grey's Anatomy" spinoff is going to land, with 10 p.m. Wednesday, 9 or 10 p.m. Monday and 10 p.m. Thursday slots being the most-discussed possibilities at the moment.

The dramas "Babylon Fields," the untitled Cynthia Cidre project, "The Man" and "Viva Laughlin" and the comedies "Fugly," "The Big Bang Theory," "The Captain," "The Giants of Radio" and "I'm in Hell" are said to be in contention at CBS. The untitled Cynthia Cidre drama starring Jimmy Smits is rumored for the 10 p.m. Thursday slot, with the period's current occupant, "Shark," potentially replacing "Close to Home" on Friday.

In addition to "Bionic," almost all other one-hour NBC pilots are in the running, including "Journeyman," "Chuck" and "Life," which are staffing. The network is said to have narrowed down the comedy field to "The IT Crowd," "Business Class" and "Lipshitz Saves the World."

" 'Til Death" looks like a sure thing to return for next season at Fox, possibly paired with the new comedy "Action News."

Actioner "The Sarah Connor Chronicles," which is rumored as a potential companion to "24," is hot on the drama side, with "K-Ville," "Them," "Canterbury's Law," "Nurses" and "New Amsterdam" also in contention.

At CW, "Reaper" joins "Gossip Girl" as pilots that have been given the green light to begin making staffing offers.

NBC kicked off the broadcast networks' annual series-pickup frenzy with orders to dramas "The Bionic Woman," "Chuck," "Journeyman" and "Life" as well as a renewal of critical darling "Friday Night Lights."

Additionally, sources said ABC is close to a 13-episode order for the midseason comedy "Notes From the Underbelly," and CBS is close to bringing back the midseason comedy "Rules of Engagement" and the sophomore sitcom "The New Adventures of Old Christine."

Talks are said to continue about ABC possibly picking up eight to nine more episodes of its well-received but low-rated comedy "The Knights of Prosperity," featuring Donal Logue and company trying to rob Ray Romano (HR 5/10). Romano appeared at the end of the last aired episode of "Knights." He also is featured in the remaining three episodes of the show's first season, which have not aired.

All four newly picked up NBC drama series were given permission to begin staffing last week (HR 5/8).

"Bionic," from NBC Universal TV Studio, is a re-imagination of the 1970s series. David Eick, Jason Smilovic and director Michael Dinner exec produced the pilot starring Michelle Ryan, with Glen Morgan joining the series as exec producer.

"Chuck," from Warner Bros. TV, is a dramedy starring Zachary Levi as a computer geek working as a spy. Josh Schwartz and Chris Fedak penned the pilot and exec produced it with the pilot's director McG.

"Journeyman," from 20th Century Fox TV, stars Kevin McKidd as a man who travels back in time to fix the lives of people in trouble. Writer Kevin Falls and director Alex Graves exec produced the pilot.

"Life," from NBC Uni TV, stars Damian Lewis as an ex-cop who rejoins the force after being wrongfully imprisoned. Rand Ravich penned the pilot and exec produced it with director David Semel.

Several other NBC pilots -- including the dramedy "Lipstick Jungle," possibly for midseason, and comedies "The IT Crowd" and "Lipshitz Saves the Universe" -- are said to have strong supporters at the network.

The full-season pickup for "FNL," which struggled in the Wednesday 8 p.m. time period, follows an order for six additional scripts NBC made in April (HR 4/11). NBC Entertainment president Kevin Reilly had repeatedly stated that the NBC Uni TV show would return for a second season, probably in a new time slot. The most rumored scenario has the football drama going to Fridays.

Sources said NBC's long-running drama "Crossing Jordan" won't return, while the jury is still out on "Law & Order," "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" and "Scrubs." For two of the three, "L&O" and "Scrubs," a cancellation by NBC won't necessarily mean the end of the shows, with TNT interested in picking the procedural drama and ABC interested in taking on the medical comedy.

The end of the road might be coming for another series that was looking for a new beginning, CW's "Veronica Mars." Sources indicated that the cult show, whose trailer for a fourth season set a couple of years into the feature had been warmly received by CW brass, is now back on the verge of cancellation.

A rumored CBS schedule, which made the rounds Thursday, includes the untitled Cynthia Cidre drama pilot landing the Thursday 10 p.m. time slot and "Shark" moving to the Tuesday 10 p.m. hour.

With its paranormal theme, "Babylon Fields" could be a good fit after "Ghost Whisperer" on Friday, while murder mystery-musical "Viva Laughlin" might kick off the network's Wednesday crime lineup of "Criminal Minds" and "CSI: NY."

FX Turns More 'Dirt,' Reaps 'Riches'

'Dirt' star Courteney CoxFX has decided that once was not enough for its new series "Dirt" and "The Riches."

The cable network has picked up both shows for a second season after they delivered ratings in line with some of FX's veteran shows. Both are scheduled to return sometime next year.

Additionally, FX has decided to move the new season of "Rescue Me" from Tuesday to Wednesday nights starting in June and set a July premiere date for its legal drama "Damages," starring Glenn Close.

"We're very proud to have managed, in the toughest possible competitive environment, to launch 'Dirt' and 'The Riches' -- two highly original series that have resonated with our audience as strongly as 'The Shield' and 'Rescue Me,'" FX president John Landgraf says. "FX now has six original dramas, more than any network in the history of cable television, cementing the network's status as a leader in quality original series."

Both "Dirt," which drew a cumulative 5.2 million viewers per week (over multiple airings) earlier this season, and "The Riches," which is averaging 5.9 million cumulative viewers, have posted ratings numbers similar to recent seasons of "Rescue Me" and "The Shield." Both shows also draw about two-thirds of their audience from the adults 18-49 demographic.

In addition to picking up the two new shows, FX has set its schedule for the rest of 2007-08. "Rescue Me" will premiere Wednesday, June 13, a day later than previously announced, and remain on Wednesdays throughout the summer. "Damages," which stars Close as a powerful attorney and also features Rose Byrne, Tate Donovan and Ted Danson, will follow on Tuesday, July 24.

"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" will kick off its third season in September, with "Nip/Tuck" and "30 Days" scheduled for later in the year. New seasons of "The Shield," "Dirt" and "The Riches" will roll out in the first half of 2008.

The newcomer, which stars Brooke Shields, Kim Raver and Lindsay Price, joins yesterday's pick-ups "Life," "Journeyman," "The Bionic Woman" and "Chuck."

Also nearing a pick-up: the Peacock's imported version of the British comedy "The I.T. Crowd." Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, two of the pilot's executive producers (the others being David Guarascio and Moses Port), inked an overall deal with producer NBC Universal Television this week. The pact covers their duties on the series should it move forward, a likely sign its sibling company is going with the comedy.

Yesterday "Journeyman" creator Kevin Falls signed a similar two-year, seven-figure deal with 20th Century Fox Television - the same day the Peacock ordered the project to series.

Finally as for "Scrubs," the veteran comedy is expected to enter its final season with a slightly shortened run of 18 episodes.

'With critical acclaim and one new hit on its side, NBC will continue its rebuilding process in 2007-08 with a crop of new shows that lean heavily toward the dramatic.

The network is adding five new shows to its lineup in the fall, none of which are comedies. In fact, NBC has ordered only one new half-hour for next season, "The IT Crowd." It will likely appear at midseason. The new shows for the fall are the dramas "Bionic Woman," "Journeyman," "Life" and "Chuck" and an unscripted show called "The Singing Bee."

"Last year we promised a return to the NBC legacy of quality, and in terms of awards, buzz and critical acclaim, that's just what we delivered," NBC Entertainment president Kevin Reilly says. "We've got the class and next season we're ready to add some mass, with new shows that build on the creative accomplishments of last season and are as broad as they are good."

NBC has also done some shifting of its returning series, moving the critically beloved "Friday Night Lights" to its namesake night, Friday, at 10 p.m. ET. Returning shows "Law & Order" and "Medium" will be held back until midseason, where they will air on Sunday nights at 8 and 9, respectively. Another new drama, "Lipstick Jungle," will fill the 10 p.m. Sunday spot once the NFL season ends.

"Journeyman," a sci fi-tinged drama about a man ("Rome" star Kevin McKidd) who inexplicably travels through time, will get the 10 p.m. Monday spot after "Heroes," with NBC no doubt hoping it's found a compatible show for the first-year hit. "Chuck," a comedy-tinged spy drama from "O.C." creator Josh Schwartz, will air on Tuesdays, while "Bionic Woman" and "Life" will get Wednesday spots.

NBC's Thursday lineup will feature the same shows, in a slightly different order. "The Office" will move to 9 p.m. to anchor that hour, with "30 Rock" moving up to 8:30 following "My Name Is Earl." The seventh season of "Scrubs" will air at 9:30, leading into "ER."

"The Singing Bee" will share a Friday-night spot with returning game show "1 vs. 100." Another unscripted show, "World Moves," will be available for fall as well but doesn't have a spot yet.

Gone from the schedule are "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" -- which is moving to NBC sibling USA -- "Crossing Jordan," "Studio 60," "The Black Donnellys," and "Identity." Donald Trump's reality franchise "The Apprentice" is also apparently done.

Stephen McPherson, president, ABC Entertainment, today outlined ABC's plans for next season and unveiled the network's 2007-08 fall schedule before a crowd of ABC affiliates and representatives of the advertising and media communities at Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall.

Scheduled to debut next season are four new comedy series: "Carpoolers," "Cavemen," "Miss/Guided" and "Sam I Am"; along with seven new drama series: "Big Shots," "Cashmere Mafia," "Dirty Sexy Money," "Eli Stone," "Private Practice," "Pushing Daisies" and "Women's Murder Club." Alternative series "Oprah's Big Give" is also slated to debut.

In addition to the new series, ABC previously announced season renewals for "Brothers & Sisters," "MEN IN TREES," "Ugly Betty," "Grey's Anatomy," "Lost," "Desperate Housewives," "Boston Legal," "Jimmy Kimmel Live," "Dancing with the Stars," "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," "The Bachelor," "Supernanny," "America's Funniest Home Videos" and "Wife Swap."

"October Road" and "Notes from the Underbelly" will return for second seasons as well.

"We're heading into the new season with a strong lineup of returning shows that we've developed and nurtured over the past few years," said McPherson. "That solid foundation will help us launch an exciting development slate as we continue our forward momentum this fall. We're dedicated to working hard week after week to deliver the best stories and most memorable characters on TV."

During the 2006-07 TV Season, ABC's first season in decades without "Monday Night Football," the network solidified its dominance with women and in all upscale measures. And with the addition of "Ugly Betty," "Brothers & Sisters," "October Road" and "MEN IN TREES," ABC has added a new generation of broad-appealing, young, accessible dramas to its roster. ABC is the #1 network with Women 18-34 and Women 18-49, and is currently in second place for the season among Adults 18-49, leading both NFL-fueled CBS (with "Super Bowl 2007") and NBC (with "Sunday Night Football").

Excluding sports from the mix this season (to account for the loss of "Monday Night Football," the 2006 "Super Bowl" and the Bowl Championship series) ABC is the No. 2 network to Fox among Adults 18-49. The network airs 7 of the Top 20 TV series in the key young adult sales demographic. ABC retained 99% of its Total Viewers, 100% of its Adult 18-34 audience and 95% of its Adult 18-49 audience year to year in the "non-sports" averages. Additionally, ABC marked its second straight season as the No. 1 television network among advertiser-prized upscale, high-income Adults 18-49 (with/$100K+ annual income). And ABC is the only network whose May Sweep performance is up from a year ago.

As previously announced, "Saturday Night College Football" will return for a second season on SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 1 (8:00 p.m., ET).

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- Both CBS and the CW confirmed the bulk of their renewals and cancellations today as upfront week kicked into high gear.

Various sources have indicated the Eye has given firm go-aheads to 12 series - "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," "CSI: Miami," "CSI: NY," "Ghost Whisperer," "How I Met Your Mother," "The New Adventures of Old Christine," "Rules of Engagement," "Shark," "The Unit," "Criminal Minds," "NUMB3RS" and "NCIS." - while "48 Hours Mystery," "60 Minutes," "The Amazing Race," "Cold Case," "Two and a Half Men" and "Without a Trace" are also expected to return.

Not making the cut: freshman drama "Jericho" as well as longshots "Close to Home" and "The Class."

Over on the CW, renewals have been issued to its signature reality series "America's Next Top Model," Monday comedies "Girlfriends" and "The Game," as well as dramas "Smallville," "Supernatural" and "One Tree Hill."

Also on track to return: "WWE Smackdown," "Beauty and the Geek" and potentially "Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll" should a second season format be worked out.

On the flip side, veteran comedy "All of Us" won't be returning for a fifth season while "Veronica Mars" is drifting towards cancellation as well.

As for its 2007-2008 freshman class, the netlet has confirmed three dramas - Josh Schwartz's "Gossip Girl," the Kevin Smith-helmed "Reaper" and U.K. import "Wild at Heart" - as well as one comedy - "Aliens in America," now a co-production of Warner Bros. Television and CBS Paramount Network Television - have been given series orders.

In addition, the CW is expected to move forward with its alternative half-hours "CW Now," an "Entertainment Tonight"-esque look at pop culture, and "Online Nation" (previously known as "Viewsers"), an "America's Funniest Home Videos"-esque series for the YouTube generation.

Meanwhile over on FOX, the network has locked in "24" for two more seasons. The veteran drama had been widely expected to return despite a downtrend in its ratings and critical praise.

Series star Kiefer Sutherland is also set to return for both go-arounds as part of his multi-year production deal with producer 20th Century Fox Television.

The five new series feature bold and creative concepts, including Viva Laughlin, where drama is accented by iconic music; Cane, starring Jimmy Smits as the head of a powerful South Florida Cuban-American family; Moonlight, a romantic thriller with a new twist on the vampire legend; The Big Bang Theory, a comedy about genius geeks from "Two and A Half Men" co-creator Chuck Lorre; and KID NATION, a reality series where 40 kids will try to build a new society in an abandoned ghost town.

These new shows will be woven into a deep and successful lineup that returns more series and has more time period-winning programs than any other network. CBS will return television's Number One drama and scripted program, CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION; the Number One comedy, TWO AND A HALF MEN; the Number One new comedy, RULES OF ENGAGEMENT; the Number One news magazine, 60 MINUTES; and the premiere reality series, SURVIVOR.

Also returning are: HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, CSI: MIAMI, NCIS, THE UNIT, CRIMINAL MINDS, CSI: NY, WITHOUT A TRACE, GHOST WHISPERER, NUMB3RS, COLD CASE and SHARK, as well as 48 HOURS: MYSTERY and CRIMETIME SATURDAY.

On Monday, CBS adds a new series to television's top rated comedy lineup. HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, with a young and loyal audience, returns at 8:00 PM, paired with the new genius comedy THE BIG BANG THEORY at 8:30 PM to form a young adult comedy block. From 9:00-10:00 PM, CBS returns television's top comedy, TWO AND A HALF MEN, followed by the Number One new comedy, RULES OF ENGAGEMENT. At 10:00 PM, CSI: MIAMI, the night's Number One scripted series, returns for its sixth season.

On Tuesday, the Top 20 hit NCIS and THE UNIT return from 8:00-10:00 PM. This successful two-hour drama block will serve as a launching pad for the stylish new drama CANE at 10:00 PM.

On Wednesday, CBS returns its successful duo of CRIMINAL MINDS and CSI: NY from 9:00-11:00 PM. Earlier in the evening at 8:00 PM, the network will try something very different with a new reality series, KID NATION, starring 40 remarkable kids attempting to prove they can form a functioning society in an abandoned New Mexico ghost town, where their adult predecessors failed.

On Thursday, CBS returns one of television's top dramas, WITHOUT A TRACE, to 10:00 PM, joining forces once again with the time period-winning SURVIVOR at 8:00 PM and CSI: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION, television's Number One drama, at 9:00 PM.

CBS will again use an established series as a launch pad for a new one on Friday. GHOST WHISPERER opens at 8:00 PM as a compatible lead-in to the new romantic thriller MOONLIGHT at 9:00 PM, followed by the return of the time period-winning drama NUMB3RS at 10:00 PM.

Saturdays will feature CBS's CRIMETIME programming from 8:00-10:00 PM, followed by 48 HOURS: MYSTERY, the night's top-rated program.

On Sunday, CBS will once again open with 60 MINUTES, the perennial Number One newsmagazine on television. At 8:00 PM, CBS will make one of its biggest moves with one of its boldest new shows, VIVA LAUGHLIN, a drama with music, based on the British hit "Viva Blackpool." From 9:00-11:00 PM, the network will program a two-hour block of successful crime and justice with the growing COLD CASE and the sophomore series SHARK.

In addition to the new series for Fall, the network announced the pick up of three programs for midseason, including the four-time Emmy Award-winning THE AMAZING RACE, the comedy THE NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE, starring Emmy Award winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and the provocative new drama SWINGTOWN.

The network also announced it has ordered the reality series POWER OF 10, hosted by comedian Drew Carey ("The Drew Carey Show") for this summer.

They will cook their own meals, clean their own outhouses, haul their own water and even run their own businesses - including the old town saloon (root beer only). They'll also create a real government - four kid leaders who will guide the group through their adventure, pass laws and set bedtimes. Through it all, they'll cope with regular childhood emotions and situations: homesickness, peer pressure and the urge to break every rule they've ever known. The CW Network unveiled the schedule for its 2007-2008 season today at Madison Square Garden before more than 3,000 advertisers, affiliates and national media. The announcement was made by Dawn Ostroff, President of Entertainment, The CW.

"Our new shows have attitude and a sense of fun, and they're going to define this network," said Ostroff. "With that in mind, The CW is adding six new series to our schedule this fall. With established shows anchoring four nights and providing a launch pad for new programs, we will also have stability on our successful Thursday and Friday lineups. Shows that can be enjoyed by the whole family will air on Mondays and Sundays in the 8:00-9:00 hour, with the 7:00-8:00 hour on Sunday providing an innovative showcase for both viewers and advertisers."

On Wednesday nights, the network's top-rated series, AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL, showed double-digit growth last season and was the number one show in the timeslot with women 18-34. AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL will return in its successful 8:00-9:00 p.m. slot, followed by the premiere of the new drama GOSSIP GIRL from 9:00-10:00 p.m. From "The O.C." producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, GOSSIP GIRL is based on the best-selling young-adult book series of the same name. The show features an ensemble cast of new and veteran actors, including Blake Lively ("The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants") and Leighton Meester ("Surface"), and focuses on the struggle for social supremacy among teens from both sides of the tracks in a posh Manhattan prep school. The fun, sexy and dramatic hour is a perfect companion piece for TOP MODEL'S strong female audience, making Wednesday "Girls Night In" on The CW.

Stability is the key on Thursday and Friday nights. On Thursday ?? television's most competitive night ?? SMALLVILLE and SUPERNATURAL deliver a good mix of male and female viewers. On Friday, the wildly popular FRIDAY NIGHT SMACKDOWN! rules the night with two hours of original wrestling extravaganzas 52 weeks a year. SMACKDOWN! was last season's number-one show in male viewers, giving the network a lock on young men on the night leading into the weekend.

Sundays will kick off the 7:00-8:00 p.m. hour with two new reality shows. At 7:00 p.m., CW NOW will premiere as the ultimate source for everything hip, hot and happening in youth culture. From the producers of the entertainment magazine show "Extra," CW NOW utilizes eye-catching graphics and visuals in a fast-paced mix of celebrity gossip and current fashion and lifestyle trends. Advertisers can participate by incorporating their brand into the fabric of the show, expanding on the network's success last season with content wraps. At 7:30 p.m., The CW is turning couch potatoes into mouse potatoes with ONLINE NATION, a series that takes the best of the web's user- generated video and makes it available to television audiences. At 8:00 p.m., the new family drama LIFE IS WILD brings the beauty and drama of Africa to television. The show will be filmed entirely in South Africa, with a diverse cast of American, British and South African actors, and will feature film-quality production values. LIFE IS WILD is the story of a dysfunctional blended family from New York who moves to a rural South African town and finds they must rely on each other more than they ever did back home. The 9:00 p.m. hour will continue last season's successful strategy of an encore presentation of AMERICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL.

The popular Monday night comedy line-up returns with three favorites and one new series. From 8:00-8:30 p.m., the critically acclaimed EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS returns with a first-time ever guest appearance by the show's co-creator and executive producer, Chris Rock. EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS provides the perfect lead-in for the ground-breaking new fish-out-of-water comedy ALIENS IN AMERICA, about a 16-year-old Wisconsin boy, Justin Tolchuk (Dan Byrd, "The Hills Have Eyes"), whose mother decides to improve his social status at school by importing an exchange student to be his friend. When the student turns out to be a Pakistani Muslim teenager named Raja (Adhir Kalyan, "Fair City"), issues of diversity, tolerance and coming of age in America take center stage in this sweet and insightful comedy.

The Monday comedy block continues with GIRLFRIENDS and THE GAME, the two highest-rated scripted shows on television among Africa-American adults and women 18-34, helping to make The CW the number one-rated programming option for African-American viewers on Monday nights.

On Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m., the hit reality series BEAUTY AND THE GEEK, from executive producers Ashton Kutcher and Jason Goldberg, will return with a new crop of beauties and geeks in this funny and poignant social experiment competition. The devilish new drama REAPER will follow at 9:00 p.m. With executive producers Michelle Fazekas, Tara Butters, Mark Gordon, Deb Spera, Tom Spezialy and executive producer/director Kevin Smith, this humor-filled adventure is the story of a slacker named Sam (Bret Harrison, "The Loop," "Grounded for Life") who learns that his parents accidentally sold his soul to the devil before he was born, forcing him into a new life as the devil's bounty hunter. MIDSEASON
In a strategy designed to give producers time to make a significant creative change, the hit drama ONE TREE HILL will be held until midseason. When it returns, the story will have advanced four years and the characters will have already graduated from college. Online digital diaries will premiere in the fall, allowing fans to learn what happened during the college years, and will lead into the midseason series return.

Midseason reality series include a second season of the popular PUSSYCAT DOLLS PRESENT, which averaged eight-million viewers a week in its premiere season, along with two new reality concepts. On FARMER WANTS A WIFE, a real-life farmer will search for a wife from the big city, and on CROWNED: THE MOTHER OF ALL PAGEANTS, mother/daughter teams must work together to win a beauty pageant. The three reality shows will enable the network to schedule original reality series in key time periods over the entire season.

FOX ANNOUNCES PRIMETIME SLATE FOR 2007-2008 SEASON

New York (Thursday, May 17, 2007) Peter Liguori, President, Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company, today unveiled the FOX primetime schedule for the 2007-2008 television season.

"This is the most stable and most vibrant schedule ever presented by FOX one that is sure to help us secure our fourth consecutive season as the No. 1 network in key demos," Liguori said. "We'll have a balanced schedule across the week, and we expect a significantly stronger fourth quarter. And in early 2008, 24 and AMERICAN IDOL, along with unprecedented sporting events in primetime including the Super Bowl on Feb. 3 will allow us to launch additional series and position ourselves for another dominant season."

Liguori went on to say: "We'll have returning shows on six nights in the fall and every night of the week come January. We're introducing new series that are distinctive, compelling, and which have impressive auspices. New series will be paired with returning hits to create a balanced, competitive, solid schedule."

The new dramas premiering this fall are K-VILLE (20th Century Fox Television), starring Anthony Anderson and Cole Hauser as police officers in post-Katrina New Orleans; and NEW AMSTERDAM (Regency Television), the first American television project from Oscar-nominated director/producer Lasse Hallstrm, featuring newcomer Nikolaj Coster Waldau as a New York City homicide detective unlike any other.

FOX has announced the September premiere dates for a bevy of returning shows, plus five of its new options. In the past, FOX has attempted to get an early start on the fall season, often premiering shows in August or just ahead of the more conventional network premiere dates. That strategy has let FOX get traction before the fall is interrupted by the baseball postseason.

This year, with the network's baseball exposure somewhat limited, FOX's autumn launches are surprisingly conservative. Only one show, "Are You Smarter That a 5th Grader," will launch in August (premiering on Thursday, Aug. 30), with the rest of the lineup starting over three traditional weeks in September.

As the network announced back at its May upfront presentation to advertisers, the fall will see the premieres of the new scripted dramas "K-Ville" and "New Amsterdam," along with the comedy "Back to You" and the unscripted "Kitchen Nightmares" and "Nashville." The network has saved big guns like "The Sarah Connor Chronicles" and "The Return of Jezebel James" for the January season where "American Idol" and "24" arrive to make everything alright again.

Following the Aug. 30 "Smarter" premiere, FOX will wait until Saturday, Sept. 8 to unveil new episodes of its reliable "COPS" and "America's Most Wanted" duo. FOX's late-night Saturday options, "MADtv" and "Talk Show With Spike Feresten," will premiere the next week.

"Kitchen Nightmares," a new series staring Chef Gordon Ramsay, has its first airing at 9 p.m. ET on Thursday, Sept. 13 and "Nashville," from the producers of "Laguna Beach," goes out at the same time the following night.

A new season of "Prison Break," with our heroes now stuck in a Panamanian prison, begins on Monday, Sept. 17, followed by the premiere of the New Orleans police drama "K-Ville," starring Anthony Anderson and Cole Hauser.

The Kelsey Grammer/Patricia Heaton sitcom "Back to You" premieres at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19, with the second season launch of "'Til Death" and the third season premiere of "Bones" to follow.

On Sunday, Sept. 23, "The Simpsons" and "King of the Hill" will start new seasons in the 8 p.m. hour and "Family Guy" will get an hour-long premiere. Fans of "American Dad" will have to wait until Sept. 30 for that show to launch.

FOX's other September openings will come on Tuesday, Sept. 25 with the first episode of the immortal cop saga "New Amsterdam" leading into the eagerly awaited "House" premiere.

Ik vroeg me ook al af waarom ik steeds aan Six Degrees moest denken. Zal wel komen omdat ik die serie ook nergens over vond gaan.

Als je echt wil vergelijken lijkt Californication denk ik meer op iets als Red Shoe Diaries.

Denk ook niet dat ook maar iemand op voorhand voor het uitzenden of zien van de pilot op basis van een beschrijvend verhaal van Grey's Anatomy, Desperate Housewives, the Office, Soprano's etc had kunnen zeggen dat het later iets succesvols werd.

Ligt toch veel meer aan hoe de het acteerwerk is, hoe de dialogen zijn, hoe het verhaal geschreven is en zich ontwikkeld. Kan je vooraf vaak niks van zeggen. Veel van die serie's moet je gewoon een aflevering of 2 tot 3 van afwachten of het iets wordt.

Heb gister ook Journeyman gekeken, las vrij veel negatieve reacties (het kwam ook pas echt op gang na 30 minuten dus vandaar misschien) maar het was best goed idd! Verder Life en Dirty Sexy Money gezien maar dat sprak me nog niet meteen aan, kijken hoe dat verder gaat.
