LIMA, Peru — A powerful earthquake shook Peru's coast near the capital on Wednesday, toppling some buildings and killing at least 15 people. Authorities said the quake generated a tsunami but it wasn't destructive.
Peru's highly respected Cable news station Canal N reported that the 7.9 magnitude quake had caused a church to collapse in the city of Ica south of Lima, killing 17 people and injuring 70.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake hit at 6:40 p.m. (7:40 p.m. EDT) about 90 miles southeast of Lima at a depth of about 25 miles. Four strong aftershocks ranging from magnitudes of 5.4 to 5.9 were felt afterward.
Several hours later, President Alan Garcia said in a nationwide broadcast that it apparently had not caused a catastrophe.
"Thank you God Almighty, these terrible quakes did not cause a high death toll like in other years," he said.
The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning for the coasts of Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, Costa Rica and Panama. A tsunami watch was issued for the rest of Central America and Mexico and an advisory for Hawaii.

The center canceled all the alerts after about two hours, but it said the quake had caused an estimated 10-inch tsunami near the epicenter.
"It wasn't big enough to be destructive," said Stuart Weinstein, the center's assistant director.
An Associated Press photographer said that some homes had collapsed in the center of Lima and that many people had fled into the streets for safety. The capital shook for more than a minute.
"This is the strongest earthquake I've ever felt," said Maria Pilar Mena, 47, a sandwich vendor in Lima. "When the quake struck, I thought it would never end."
In his comments, Garcia did not give a death toll, but said there were at least 70 confirmed injured.
He ordered all police personnel to the streets of Lima to keep order and said he was sending the country's health minister and two other Cabinet members to Ica, 165 miles southeast of Lima, where news reports said the quake hit hardest. Garcia also said public schools will be closed Thursday because the buildings may be unsafe.
Police reported that large boulders shook loose from hills and were blocking the country's Central Highway east of Lima.
Firefighters quoted in radio reports said that many street lights and windows shattered in Lima but did not specify if there were any injuries. Hundreds of workers were evacuated from Lima office buildings after the quake struck and remained outside, fearing aftershocks
Callers to Radioprogramas, Peru's main news radio station, said parts of several cities in southern Peru had been hit with blackouts. Callers reported homes in poor neighborhoods in Chincha near Ica had collapsed.
The quake also knocked out telephone service and mobile phone service in the capital. Firefighters were called to put out a fire in a shopping center. State doctors called off a national strike that began on Wednesday to handle the emergency.
The last time a quake of magnitude 7.0 or larger struck Peru's central coast was in 1974 when a magnitude 7.6 hit in October followed by a 7.2 a month later.
The latest Peru quake occurred in a subduction zone where one section of the Earth's crust dives under another, said USGS geophysicist Dale Grant at the National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo.
Some of the world's biggest quakes strike in subduction zones including the catastrophic Indian Ocean temblor in 2004 that generated deadly tsunami waves.
The tsunami warnings caused alarm up and down the coast.
Alex Kouri president of the Callao region, which includes the port of Callao, adjacent to Lima, urged residents to remain calm in the face of any possible tsunami, while other officials told Radioprograms they were going to evacuate La Punta, a Callao neighborhood, because of the potential threat of a tsunami.
In Colombia, President Alvaro Uribe ordered the partial evacuation of the southern city of Tumaco in response to the warning.

damn 7,9 is ook wel een forse aardbeving, nog geluk gehad dat het centrum van de aardbeving niet precies boven Lima lag anders waren er waarschijnlijk nog veel meer doden geweest.

Op het moment van de beving liep ik in het centrum van Lima. Ik was net terug van Mercado Central om wat te kopen voor mijn café-bar in het centrum. Plotseling hoorde ik allemaal ruiten rammelen en dacht, wat is dit? Enige ogenblikken later was de straat vol met mensen. Pas toen realiseerde ik me dat er een aardbeving bezig was. Lopend op straat voel je het veel minder dan als je in een gebouw zit. Mensen liepen in paniek rond en vele mensen waren aan het bidden. Wat voornamelijk uitzonderlijk was aan deze beving was dat het wel 2 minuten duurde voordat het voorbij was. Na de beving onmiddellijk geprobeerd mijn vrouw te bellen, maar uiteraard lag het telefoonnet plat. Toch lukte het me een kwartier later met haar te bellen, gelukkig was alles ok.
Een dag later is de schade enorm, niet echt in Lima, maar voornamelijk ten zuiden van Lima, hoewel er ook in Lima schade is. Ik zou op dit moment Nederlandse les aan het geven zijn, maar mijn studente is niet op komen dagen. Ze woont ten zuiden van Lima, in Cañete, een van de ergst getroffen plaatsen in Peru. Hopelijk is er niks met haar gebeurd, tot nu toe is het nog onmogelijk geweest om contact met haar te hebben.
Een dag later is de schade enorm, niet echt in Lima, maar voornamelijk ten zuiden van Lima, hoewel er ook in Lima schade is. Ik zou op dit moment Nederlandse les aan het geven zijn, maar mijn studente is niet op komen dagen. Ze woont ten zuiden van Lima, in Cañete, een van de ergst getroffen plaatsen in Peru. LIMA - De aardbeving in Peru had een kracht van 8,0 op de schaal van Richter, sterker dan de eerder gemelde 7,9. Het Amerikaanse seismologisch instituut USGS herzag donderdag zijn eerdere metingen.
Een aardbeving van deze kracht komt zelden voor.
Bij de beving woensdagavond kwamen bijna 500 mensen om en raakten 1500 anderen gewond.
De schok richtte grote schade aan in de zuidelijke kustgebieden.

Wat een naschokken ook zeg. nadat ik die 7.5 op 500 kilometer gevoeld heb, weet ik dat dit absoluut niet fijn kan zijn, buiten de 8.0 als hoofdschok alleen al.
Waar is trouwens die lutser die liep te zeiken dat het niet ernstig was? Even excuses maken gehaktbal!

ja, heeft met de diepte van de aardbeving te maken. Die bij Java was op bijna 300 kilometer diep. Hoewel de bewegings-golven erg ver kwamen (op meer dan 1000 klometer is de beving duidelijk gevoeld) bleef de schade beperkt tot enkele ingestortte huizen. The death toll rose to 510 on Thursday in the magnitude-8 earthquake that devastated cities of adobe and brick in Peru's southern desert. Survivors wearing blankets walked like ghosts through the ruins.
Dust-covered dead were pulled out and laid in rows in the streets, or beneath bloodstained sheets at damaged hospitals and morgues. Doctors struggled to help more than 1,500 injured, including hundreds who waited on cots in the open air, fearing more aftershocks would send the structures crashing down.
Destruction was centered in Peru's southern desert, at the oasis city of Ica and the nearby port of Pisco, about 125 miles southeast of the capital, Lima.
The deputy chief of Peru's fire department, Roberto Ognio, presented a report saying the death toll from the quake had risen to 510. He did not say where the additional 60 deaths had occurred.
Earlier Thursday, the United Nations said the official toll of 450 dead was expected to rise.
"It is quite likely that the numbers will continue to go up since the destruction of the houses in this area is quite total," said U.N. Assistant Secretary-General Margareta Wahlstrom.
The San Clemente church in the main plaza of the gritty fishing port of Pisco was perhaps the single deadliest spot in the magnitude-8 earthquake, which devastated cities and hamlets of adobe and brick across Peru's southern desert.

Indonesia unscathed after trio of earthquakes
Three undersea earthquakes struck western and eastern Indonesia this morning, but there were no reports of casualties or damage, the country's meteorological agency says.
No tsunami warnings were issued. The first quake struck at 1:26am (local time) south of a strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra, with its epicentre about 275 kilometres south-west of the capital Jakarta.
The Indonesian agency said the quake measured 5.9 on the Richter scale, while the US Geological Survey said on its website the quake was magnitude 5.
The other two quakes struck about eight hours later in the Banda Sea in the far east of Indonesia.
The quakes hit an area around 235 kilometres from the nearest city of Ambon in the Maluku islands.
Indonesia's meteorological agency put the quakes at 5.8 and 6.2 on the Richter scale.
Police officer Muhammad Nur said no tremors were felt in Ambon.
