Een zijweggetje maar toch interessant. Wat achtergronden over Murat en z'n ex-vrouw Dawn in Norfolk:
SUSPECT'S MARRIAGE MYSTERYFRIENDS of Robert Murat's ex-wife told last night how she suddenly walked out on him - but she would not say why. Dawn Chapman, 41, was devastated when her marriage collapsed a few months after they moved to Portugal.
They had hoped to start a new life with daughter, Sofia, now four, who neighbours last night said bears a startling resemblance to missing Madeleine McCann. A friend said: "One minute they seemed perfectly happy and were excited at their new life in Portugal, and the next, Dawn was home and the marriage was in tatters.
"It was obvious something had gone terribly wrong during their few months on the Algarve but she would not talk about what had happened. "She looked on the verge of a nervous breakdown when she got back. For a long time, she seemed to be in tears the whole time and she lost a lot of weight.
"The circumstances of the marriage break-up were something of a bombshell to her." Dawn, who also has a son David, 20, from an earlier marriage, refused to say why she walked out on kidnap suspect Murat, 33.
The friend added: "Something happened out there, she discovered something about him and things were never the same again." Dawn was escorted by police from her home in Hockering, Norfolk, to a safe house on Monday night.
She covered daughter Sofia with a blanket to hide her from the cameras. But neighbours remarked how similar the girl is to missing Madeleine, who turned four at the weekend. Geoffrey Livock, 71, who lives near Dawn, said: "At first glance, if you saw them walking down the street you would think they were twins.
"Their hair is about the same and their faces are similar. I didn't think anything about it when Madeleine went missing. It was only when all this came out that I realised they were so similar."
Last night, Dawn had not returned to the semi-detached home that she once shared with Murat, who now lives in a villa 150 yards from where Madeleine went missing 13 days ago in Praia da Luz.
But Murat's close friend Gareth Bailey told last night how the marriage foundered when Dawn failed to settle into a new life abroad in 2005.
He said: "She was unhappy in Portugal and became homesick. She is a Norfolk girl and her family are in Norfolk. "She only stayed with Rob for three or four months before she decided to come home. He had already got a life out there, so he stayed. At first, he kept flying back to the UK to spend time with Dawn and their daughter.
"He was going backwards and forwards between Portugal and here, often only staying a couple of days before going back there. In the end, their relationship just fizzled out."
Gareth, who worked with Murat for four years at Inchcape Autoparc used car dealership in Norwich, told how his friend adored his daughter.
In conversations with reporters during the search for Madeleine, Murat said he and his ex-wife were fighting a custody battle over Sofia. Meer op
