Tourists Fear Aftershocks

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.0 has rocked Mexico.

Tourists in Acapulco rushed out of their hotel rooms and huddled together, fearing aftershocks.

The quake hit about 6am GMT (1am local time).

It struck 40 miles northwest of Acapulco on the country's Pacific coast, the US Geological Survey said.

"Oh man, we felt it. We jumped out of bed and went into the garden. I was fast asleep. It really shook. Things fell off shelves," said Acapulco resident Anna Archdale de Palazuelos.

The area is home to around a million people.

Power also went down in some areas of Mexico City, which was devastated by an 8.1 magnitude earthquake in 1985 that killed around 10,000 people.

Inhabitants in the capital's central Tlatelolco district, badly hit 22 years ago, swarmed out into a main square.

Mexican radio said the windows of some homes there were broken.

Mexico City police patrolled streets while even more tourists waited outside their hotels in pyjamas or bath robes.

There were no early reports of injuries, Mexican emergency services said. (Sky)

Bron:

The massive magnitude 8.1 earthquake that jolted the Solomon Islands on April 1, 2007, permanently changed the shoreline on Ranongga Island, west of the epicenter. New beach was added to the western shore of the island when the earthquake lifted the island as much as three meters, exposing near-shore coral reefs, reported the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. The freshly exposed reefs are visible beneath a veil of clouds in the top image, acquired by the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on NASA’s Terra satellite on April 11, 2007. The lower image, taken on March 31, 2006, shows the island’s former shoreline. Lush tropical vegetation is red in these images, while the exposed reef is dark grey. Water is black and clouds range from light blue lavender to white. The exposed reef adds tens of meters to most of the shoreline, and more than 150 meters at the tip of the spit of land shown in this image.

The earthquake occurred along the plate boundary, where the Australia/Woodlark/Solomon Sea plates slide beneath the denser Pacific plate. Friction between the sinking (subducting) plates and the overriding Pacific plate led to the large earthquake on April 1, said the United States Geological Survey (USGS) summary of the earthquake. Large earthquakes are common in the region, though the section of the plate that produced the April 1 earthquake had not caused any quakes of magnitude 7 or larger since the early 20th century, said the USGS.

Expecting An 'Major' Earthquake In The Northern Tien Shan

Approximately through April 2007, there may happen a heavy earthquake in the area of the Northern Tien Shan. According the specialists of the Schmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth, Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Institute of Geophysical Research of the National Nuclear Center of Republic of Kazakhstan, probability of this event is rather high, and the researchers forecast it based on the analysis of earthquakes in Central Asia within the last hundred years.
Anzeige

When analyzing Centeral Asia seismicity the researchers noted that powerful earthquakes in the Hindu Kush, Altai and Northern Tien Shan are often grouped by three. Events in the first two regions can happen in the reverse order but the Northern Tien Shan earthquake always accompanies them. Within the last century, five groups of such events took place. The Hindu Kush earthquakes are deep-focus ones, they take place at the depths of 100 to 230 kilometers, in contrast to others, more shallow ones in the interior of the earth’s crust. It may take from 1.8 to 6.9 years from the first through the third earthquake in the group of three, while the interval between the second and the third earthquake makes up 20 days to a year and a half.

According to the researchers’ calculations, probability is rather high that within 100 years it was by chance that the pairs consisting of the Hindu Kush and the Altai earthquakes were formed for five times, but it is no way that groups of three earthquakes could accidentally happen for five times. Probability of such event makes about one of the hundred thousandth. Apparently, a group of three occurs as follows: first the Hindu Kush and the Altai earthquakes happen (in any succession but at the interval not exceeding six years), after which likelihood abruptly grows that a cataclysm will also take place in the region of the Northern Tien Shan within the next year and a half.

Why does the Northern Tien Shan regularly respond to the events that took place in the Hindu Kush and the Altai? According to the specialists’ opinion, the main reason is as follows. The lithosphere of the vast regions in Central Asia from the Hindu Kush and the Western Himalayas through the Altai and the Sayan Mountains is under the action of stresses caused by collision of the Indian and the Eurasian platforms. The stress field in the region is relatively homogeneous. After a pair of powerful earthquakes in the regions of the Hindu Kush and the Altai, the stresses redistribute, and as a result pressure increases between seismic event foci. The stresses should increase most of all exactly in the middle between them, just where seismic foci of powerful earthquakes of the Northern Tien Shan are located. Their energy is usually significantly lower than that of the first two events in the group of three, thus confirming the hypothesis of the Russian and Kazakhstan researchers.

The last group of three earthquakes that took place in 2002-2003 differs to some extent from the previous ones, mainly because after it, on October 8, 2005, there occurred one more very powerful crustal earthquake with seismic magnitude of 7.6 in the area of Kashmir, nearby the Hindu Kush zone. This was the most powerful earthquake for the last one hundred years within a radius of 600 kilometers from this zone. According to the specialists, this earthquake’s effect should be similar to the effect of the deep-focus Hindu Kush events. The researchers assume that there may happen one more event in the region of the Northern Tien Shan (its magnitude being about 6 and more) after a group of the 2002-2005 powerful earthquakes. The most probable time of the disaster is a year and a half after the Kashmir earthquake, that is approximately through April 2007. One of likely locations for this earthquake preparation is the region of the Kirghiz mountain ridge to the south-east of Bishkek. In 2004, two rather powerful deep events already took place there, which can be considered as forerunners of the impending cataclysm.

“By the way, an earthquake already happened in the mentioned region on December 25 last year, says Yuri Kopnichev, its magnitude being 5.8, which is practically in line with our forecast. It caused major destruction in Kochkor region of Kirghizia. Nevertheless, we expect that a more powerful event is to occur here.”

TOKYO, Japan (AP) -- A moderate earthquake jolted central Japan on Sunday, injuring at least five people, damaging houses and a 400-year-old castle, police and officials said.

The 5.4-magnitude quake hit at 12:19 p.m. local time and was centered in Mie prefecture, about 200 miles southwest of Tokyo, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

About six hours later, a magnitude-4.5 temblor believed to be an aftershock struck the area, Japan's Meteorological Agency reported.

A woman and a man suffered minor head and shoulder injuries at a roadside restaurant in Kameyama city when part of a ceiling fell on them. Elsewhere in the Mie province, three people received minor leg and arm injuries, prefectural official Yoshihisa Ito said.

The quake also caused part of a stone wall to collapse at the more than 400-year-old Kameyama Castle, but nobody was injured, according to local police. Several houses were partially damaged.

Authorities briefly suspended high-speed bullet trains and other train services and closed roads to perform safety checks, but transport services quickly resumed, Ito said.

Sunday's temblor was not related to a pair of fairly powerful quakes Saturday -- one near a remote island in the Pacific Ocean south of Tokyo and another one off the northeastern coast of Ibaraki, meteorological official Kazumitsu Yoshikawa said.

In March, a magnitude-6.9 quake in northwestern Japan killed one person and injured more than 200 others.

Japan sits atop four tectonic plates and is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. In 1995, a magnitude-7.2 quake killed 6,433 people in the western city of Kobe.

Strong Quake rocks Japan & Taiwan, Tsunami alert triggered

TOKYO — A series of strong earthquakes rattled southwestern Japan on Friday, prompting the government to warn of a possible tsunami that ultimately never came.

There were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries from the quakes.

The Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami advisory for southwestern Japan after an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 6.7 struck at 10:46 a.m. (0146 GMT).

The notice covered islands around Miyakojima, part of the Ryukyu island chain that stretches southwest toward Taiwan.

A tsunami advisory is used when waves are forecast to be no more than 18 inches tall, agency official Yuji Nishimae said. The agency issues a warning when the waves are forecast to be 3.1 to 6.2 feet high, and warns of a large tsunami when higher waves are expected, he added.

The agency lifted its advisory at 11:50 a.m. (0250 GMT). No tsunami was detected, agency official Kana Akiyama said.

The 6.7-magnitude quake came a little more than an hour after a tremor with a preliminary 6.2 magnitude quake struck the same area. A third quake, also with a preliminary 6.2 magnitude, followed later in the morning.

People living on the island were warned to stay away from the coast as a precaution.

"I could feel a little bit of shaking, but it wasn't strong enough to rattle cups on desktops and the like," local policeman Takumi Higa said.

Japan is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries because it sits atop four tectonic plates. A magnitude 5.5 earthquake jolted northern Japan early Thursday, but there were no reports of injuries or damage.

Miyakojima, part of Okinawa prefecture, is about 1,130 miles southwest of Tokyo.

Earthquake Raises Reefs in the Solomon Islands

When people talk about change happening on a geologic time scale, most of the time, they mean that the change happens over the course of millions of years: the Colorado River gradually cuts through the soft rock of the Colorado Plateau until it has made a 4,000-foot deep chasm, the Grand Canyon; continents drift centimeters at a time, slowly changing the shape and position of landmasses on the Earth. Most of the time, change is slow, but sometimes, geologic change happens all at once. This was the case on Ranongga Island in the Solomon Islands. In the early morning hours of April 2, 2007, a magnitude 8.1 earthquake shook the Solomon Islands, its epicenter southwest of Ranongga Island. The huge quake pushed much of the island up, raising the coral reefs that ringed the island above the water. In the course of a few minutes, Ranongga Island acquired several meters of new beach.

The newly exposed reef forms a gray rim along the eastern shore of the island in the left image, acquired by the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on April 12, 2007. In the right image, taken on March 31, 2006, the shallowly submerged reefs color the water a lighter shade of blue. The uplift may be more dramatic than the images show. When ASTER took the 2007 image, the tide was 29.4 centimeters higher than it was when the 2006 image was taken, and yet the uplift is still visible. The lush vegetation that covers the tropical island is bright red in this image, which is made from both visible and infrared light.

Out of its aquatic environment, the reef died, becoming the foundation of new land. Such evolution is common in earthquake zones in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. During the December 26, 2004, earthquake that generated the massive Indian Ocean tsunami, Simeulue Island was lifted as much as 150 centimeters (4.9 feet), exposing the reef that surrounded it. A similar set of exposed fossilized reefs on the shores of Papua New Guinea, near the Solomon Islands, provided proof that wobbles in the Earth’s orbit trigger ice ages.

Earthquake in southern Chile could be birth of undersea volcano

SANTIAGO, Chile There are reports of a strong earthquake in southern Chile.

The region, about 17-hundred miles south of the capital Santiago, is sparsely populated. Preliminary reports indicate no victims or major damage, though the governor says there was some panic in two towns. Electric power and telephone services were briefly interrupted, and a minor landslide damaged two houses.

The U-S Geological Survey puts the magnitude at six-point-two.

Scientists say the tremor could be related to the birth of an undersea volcano in a fjord. The area has been hit by hundreds in the last three months, all centered in the same fjord.

An earthquake with a magnitude of at least 4.7 has shaken southern England.

The quake struck at 8.18am, with the British Geological Survey placing the epicentre 7.5 miles off the Dover coast.

The US Geological Survey had put the magnitude at 4.7, while the European monitoring station had measured 5.0.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service received 200 emergency calls and has been dealing with several incidents.

Most involved reports of structural damage to buildings.

Chimneys have fallen down while local energy supplier EDF Energy reported that thousands of its customers had lost power.

However, supplies have now been restored in the Folkestone and Dover areas.

One woman in her 30s was taken to hospital with minor head and neck injuries.

More than 100 people who fled their homes were comforted by the Salvation Army with shelter and refreshments at a church in Folkestone. (Sky)
