King Crimson ontstaat in 1969 uit het trio Giles, Giles & Fripp. Bassist Peter Giles geeft er de brui aan en samen met blazer/zanger Ian McDonald, zanger/bassist Greg Lake (die Peter Giles vervangt) en tekstschrijver Peter Sinfield vormen drummer Michael Giles en gitarist Robert Fripp King Crimson. Ze maken 1 album, het legendarische In The Court Of The Crimson King, een van de allereerste progressieve rock albums en een voorbode van compromisloze en grensverleggende stijl van King Crimson.
Tijdens opnames voor het nieuwe album In The Wake Of Poseidon is de band alweer uit elkaar aan het vallen (en zeker niet voor de laatste keer!). McDonald en Giles nemen samen een album op en Greg Lake heeft er ook geen zin meer in en vormt Emerson, Lake & Palmer. In een rommelige periode met veel personeelswisselingen (oa Mel Collins, Keith Tippet en Gordon Haskell) en een even rommelig album, Lizard, lijkt er in '71 weer een stabiele formatie te zijn met Ian Wallace op drums, Boz Burell op bas/zang, Mel Collins op toeters en de onvermijdelijke Robert Fripp. De band toert uitgebreid door Europa en de VS en nemen 1 album op, Islands. Maar ook deze samenstelling houdt niet lang stand, in '72 houdt King Crimson op te bestaan.
Niet veel later blaast Fripp de band weer nieuw leven in. Bassist/zanger John Wetton, drummer Bill Bruford, violist David Cross en percussionist Jamie Muir vormen samen met Fripp een van de succesvolste incarnaties van de band. Na een paar optredens en de opnamen voor het "debuut"album Larks'Tongues In Aspic verlaat Muir de band en de rest tourt bijna een jaar onafgebroken. Tussendoor komt ook nog Starless And Bible Back uit, dat bijna geheel uit zorgvuldig opgepoetste liveopnames bestaat. King Crimson staat ondertussen bekend als een waar live-beest. Ze staan bekend om de improvisaties en de ongenadig hard spelende rime sectie. Zo hard dat tijdens de VS tour in '74 David Cross besluit om te stoppen, hij komt met z'n viool niet meer over het lawaai heen. De band neemt in '74 Red op, een geweldig album maar de zwanenzang voor King Crimson. Fripp heeft er genoeg van en trekt de stekker eruit...
Robert Fripp trekt zich geheel terug uit de muziekwereld, zelfs uit het sociale leven, totdat hij aan het einde van de jaren '70 weer langzaam z'n entree maakt. Na sessiewerk en als producer (oa bij Talking Heads, David Bowie en Peter Gabriel) maakt hij in '79 een soloalbum, Exposure, en vormt hij daarna The League Of Gentlemen. In '81 besluit hij tot een een terugkeer in de, zoals hij het zelf noemt, de eredivisie van de popmuziek en vormt de band Discipline. De band bestaat verder uit oudgediende Bill Bruford, gitarist/zanger Adrian Belew en bassist Tony Levin. De eerste optredens worden lyrisch door fans en pers ontvangen en na een visioen (!) hernoemt Fripp de band tot King Crimson. Het eerste album heet nog wel Discipline en is een bonte mengeling van rock, jazz, wereldmuziek, en minimal music zoals Steve Reich. Ook nu is Crimson een live-act van formaat, maar het opnemen van nieuw materiaal gaat een stuk moeilijker. In '82 verschijnt Beat en in '84, na een aantal zeer moeizaam verlopen sessies Three Of A Perfect Pair. De band tourt nog een keer door Japan en Noord Amerika en dan is voor Fripp de koek op. Voor de derde maal maakt hij een einde aan King Crimson.
Fripp gaat zich bezig houden met Guitar Craft, een soort zweverige masterclass in gitaarspelen maar maakt voor zichzelf een belofte dat Crimson halverwege de jaren '90 weer zal verschijnen. Ook doet hij weer regelmatig sessiewerk, o.a. voor David Sylvian en het is Sylvian die hij in '91 vraagt als zanger voor het nog te heroprichten King Crimson. Sylvian bedankt voor de eer, de twee nemen nog wel een album op en ondernemen een tour met in de band twee leden van het toekomstige Crimson, drummer Pat Mastellotto en bassist Trey Gunn. In 1994 acht Fripp de tijd rijp en King Crimson verschijnt als het zgn. dubbeltrio: Twee drummers, twee bassisten en twee gitaristen. De band bestaat uit de "Discipline"-samenstelling en de twee eerder genoemde Gunn en Mastellotto. In '95 verschijnt THRAK en is een combinatie van de stijl uit de jaren '70 met die van de jaren '80.
Om nieuwe inspiratie op te doen splitst de band zich tussen '97 en '00 in verschillende subgroepjes, de ProjeKcts. Bruford is dan al vertrokken, hij kan zich niet vinden in de electronisch getinte koers die Fripp wil volgen en Levin heeft geen zin om te wachten totdat Fripp weer eens zin heeft en wordt in de wachtkamer gezet. Het overgebleven kwartet maakt in '00 The ConstruKction Of Light en in '03 The Power To Believe.
En toen werd het lange tijd stil ..... Trey Gunn heeft de band eind 2003 verlaten, Fripp maakt er geen geheim van dat hij een hekel heeft aan touren en is voornamelijk bezig oud materiaal te recyclen. Wel zijn er begin 2007 oefensessies geweest met Fripp, Belew, Levin en Mastelloto.
In 2007 wordt bekend dat Porcupine Tree drummer Gavin Harrison zich heeft aangesloten als extra drummer. In 2008 word er een klein aantal concerten gegeven, maar er wordt geen nieuw materiaal opgenomen.
Pas deze week kwam er weer nieuws uit het Crimson kamp. Per 1 september 2014 is King Crimson weer aan het touren.
De lineup bestaat uit : Gavin Harrison (drums), Bill Rieflin (drums), Tony Levin (bass, Stick), Pat Mastelotto (drums), Mel Collins (saxofoon), Jakko Jakszyk (zang, gitaar) en uiteraard Robert Fripp (gitaar).
Er zijn geen plannen voor een nieuw album. De focus ligt op "reconfigured versions of existing Crimson material" ; opvallend voor een band die altijd erg terughoudend was met het spelen van oud materiaal. Er wordt volgens de huidige ideeen waarschijnlijk voornamelijk gespeeld in de USA, maar er kan natuurlijk nog veel veranderen in het komende jaar .

En met geen enkele vorm van verantwoordelijkheid behalve hypotheek betalen is het een leuk ding.
Nou kheb wel toen de Larks box gekocht, maar ik heb die cd's met concerten echt maar 1x beluisterd en vaak nog maar met een half oor. Dan heb ik liever 10 cd's met studio out-takes.
Ik kijk dan liever uit naar The Lot van Roger Taylor. Alhoewel ik niet verwacht dat daar wat nieuws in zal zitten.

Crimson Project deed voornamelijk nummers van Discipline en THRAK. Verder waren er nummers van alleen Stick Men ( Levin, Mastelotto en Markus Reuter) , of alleen het Belew Power Trio ( met Julie Slick en Tobias Ralph).
Nouja, dan maar een kaartje halen voor Heerlen.

King Crimson’s propensity for improvisation & fondness for playing its newest material – often unreleased on record at the time of the concerts - is legendary. Fewer bands still, whether by accident or design, recorded so many of their live shows. Starless offers an in depth overview of one of the era’s most significant bands in its most celebrated live line-up.Autumn 1973: As King Crimson’s second lengthy US tour of that year was coming to a close, a short series of UK concerts for the end of October, followed by a more extensive European tour in November was already planned. Three of these concerts Glasgow, Zurich & Amsterdam were recorded as full multi-track recordings, with material from the Amsterdam show being used as core material for the January 1974 recording of Starless & Bible Black. From mid-March to the start of April, the band was on the road in Europe again, promoting the album with their final European concerts of the decade, prior to undertaking a further US tour. A number of these concerts were recorded on stereo reel to reel machines, fed directly from the signal as sent to the PA system on the night of the performance. From mid-March to the start of April, the band was on the road in Europe again, promoting the album with their final European concerts of the decade, prior to undertaking a further US tour. A number of these concerts were recorded on stereo reel to reel machines, fed directly from the signal as sent to the PA system on the night of the performance. These soundboards are often referred to as “The Blue Tapes”, named after the outer colour of the original tape boxes & are especially valued for both the quality of recording & performance.This boxed set presents eighteen CDs of live concert performances, seven of them mixed from the 1973 multi-track tapes and a further eleven presenting the complete run of “The Blue Tapes” for the first time. CDs of the ORTF Paris TV performance & the 2011 stereo mix of Starless & Bible Black also feature. Two DVD-A discs & two Blu-Ray discs contain concert & studio recordings in stereo, quadraphonic & full 5.1 surround sound – all presented in high-resolution audio.

Vanaf de Discipline tijd werd al het oudere (1969-74) aardig genegeerd. Alleen Red, LTia2 zijn regelmatig gespeeld, en in 1996 zijn Talking Drum en 21CSM ook nog langsgekomen, maar dat was het wel. Tijdens de 72-74 concerten was dit overigens niet heel anders, alleen 21CSM en in 1974 af en toe Cat Foot. Fripp had het vorig jaar over "reconfigured versions of existing Crimson material", dat is een duidelijke aanwijzing dat nu wel ouder materiaal gespeeld zal worden.
Belew zit niet meer in de band, heel veel jaren 80 werk valt daardoor af lijkt mij. Jakko Jakszyk als zanger/gitarist die Indiscipline of Elephant Talk doet ? Ik zie het niet gebeuren. Jakszyk is een hele aardige zanger/gitarist, maar mist wel een beetje eigen stijl naar mijn idee.
Nee, Jakko en Mel Collins hebben jaren lang met de 21st Century Schizoid Band oud materiaal gespeeld. In the Court of the Crimson King, In the Wake of Poseidon en Islands waren toen de belangrijkste albums, en ik denk dat dat nu weer zo zal zijn. Dat is ook het werk waar veel sax in zit, dus dan kan je ook wat met Mel Collins. Circus verwacht ik ook wel.
De nieuwe KC heeft 3 drummers, dus LTiA part 1, 2 en Talking drum zouden me niet verbazen. Mel Collins speelt sopraan sax op de originele Starless, dus eigenlijk verwacht ik die ook wel.
En wat zegt het Scarity of Miracles album ? Als het al op King Crimson lijkt, dan zit het qua stijl toch het dichts bij het Islands album. Maar wat Scarity of Miracles geen Crimson album maakt, is dat het als geheel veel te rustig is. Maar het in onderdeel van bovenstaande verzamelaar, dus daar zullen ze vast ook wel wat van spelen.
Wat kan Bill Rielfin ? Natuurlijk is hij in eerste plaats een drummer, maar hij kan veel meer. Bill Rieflin gaat Mellotron spelen volgens een interview met Levin. Ik weet niet of er echt een Mellotron mee gaat op tournee, maar keyboards heb ik vanaf de jaren 80 al iet meer gezien dacht ik. Rieflin speelt ook gitaar en bass, en is ook nog zanger. Bovendien heeft Rieflin een achtergrond die wel heel erg af staat van de "prog rock" (voor zover je King Crimson daar nog onder mag rekenen). Rieflin speelde in Industrial Rock bands zoals Ministry en Lard.
Crimson heeft ook wel wat Industrial invloeden, vooral op ToaPP en The ConstruKction of Light. The ConstruKction of Light kwam voort uit 4 subgroepen (ProjeKCts), die vooral bedoelt waren om naar nieuwe wegen te zoeken. Voorafgaand aan de ProjeKCts maakte Rieflin met Fripp en Gunn echter ook 2 platen (The Repercussions Of Angelic Behavior en Birth of a Giant) die weer van grote invloed waren op the ProjeKCts. Daarvoor speelde de heren Fripp en Rieflin trouwens ook al samen op de cd van Ten Seconds, een album dat ook al aardig richting de Industrial rock ging. Rieflin heeft dus al jaren invloep op Fripp.
Ik hoop dat Rieflin voor het nodige expiriment kan zorgen, want dat is iets wat ik van Jakszyk eigenlijk niet verwacht.
Kortom, je kan er alle kanten mee op, en misschien doen ze dat ook wel. Met een hoofdrol voor Mel Collins en Jakko Jakszyk bij het oudere materiaal, waarbij Rieflin keyboards kan spelen. Hoofdrollen voor Levin, Mastelotto en Rieflin verwacht ik vooral bij het nieuwere werk.

King Crimson in Albany: The Best New Band in Prog Begins a U.S Tour
Robert Fripp and company come to America with a set list that includes songs they haven't played in 40 years
On September 9th in Albany, New York, the new, ultimate King Crimson – at seven members the largest ensemble in the British band's 46-year history, with three drummers and players from every major phase and decade – closed the opening night of its debut U.S. tour with the ultimate King Crimson song: the tortuous thunder and scathing paranoia of "21st Century Schizoid Man," from the group's 1969 debut album, In the Court of the Crimson King. A nightly feature of Crimson shows until the end of their first live era in 1974, "Schizoid Man" was mothballed as founding guitarist Robert Fripp launched subsequent lineups, including the so-called Discipline quartet in the Eighties and the fearsome double-trio configuration of 1994 to 1997. The closest any post-Seventies Crimson usually came to greatest hits was the art-metal signature "Red," from the 1974 LP of the same name, and the second part of the title piece from 1973's Larks' Tongue in Aspic.
But at the Egg, a classy, intimate concert hall, the latest Crimson – Fripp, bassist Tony Levin, singer-guitarist Jakko Jakszyk, saxophonist Mel Collins and drummers Gavin Harrison, Pat Mastelotto and Bill Rieflin – delivered "Schizoid Man" like fresh terror with the percussionists, lined along the front of the stage, loading the main, booming rhythm with flying-shrapnel accents and executing the famous staircase-staccato bridge in rifle-shot triplicate under the sax and guitars. The waiting – all 40 years – was worth it. Any Crimson could have attempted the song in that time. This was the right one.
The Best New Band in Progressive Rock
It is a testament to Fripp's committment to Crimson and his standards of exploration that this version – nicknamed Mark VIII, hatched earlier this year and hitting nine U.S. cities through early October – is one of the best new bands on the road right now, with the longest tale. Collins goes back nearly to the beginning; he first played on the 1970 album, In the Wake of Poseidon; Levin has done three prior stints; Mastelotto has been a regular since the Nineties double trio, across from drummer Bill Bruford. Harrison, previously in the British band Porcupine Tree, was the second drummer in a short-lived 2008 Crimson.
The new guys have their own recent associations with Fripp. Best known for his tenures in Ministry and R.E.M., Rieflin performed and recorded with the guitarist and R.E.M.'s Peter Buck in the improvising ensemble Slow Music. Jakszyk was the junior third of a group, with Fripp and Collins, that made the 2011 album, A Scarcity of Miracles. The current Crimson performed two songs from that record in Albany – the title track and "The Light of Day," a bleak elegance that recalled Fripp and Collins' prior, jazzy suspense and eccentric balladry on Crimson 1971's LP, Islands.
Collins' presence was an obvious trigger for the revival of Poseidon's long-dormant "Pictures of a City" (the saxophonist's first recording with the group) and the Islands tracks, "Sailor's Tale" and "The Letter," all rendered with authentic scoring (Rieflin doubled on mellotron) but treated with new flourishes – especially in Levin's bass undertow and that drumming front line. At one point in "The Letter," Mastelotto, Rieflin and Harrison filled a moment of silence with single, ringing taps on a cymbal – one per man, like the ticking of a soprano clock – before Jakszyk's vocal reentry.
The Real Crimson King
In keeping with the cumulative, historical weight of its membership, the new Crimson visited every decade in its repertoire except the Eighties. (There may be too many moving pieces in this unit to address that four-piece material.) The title track from 2000's The ConstruKction of Light and "Vrooom," from a 1994 EP, were given tumultuous makeovers. There is a little new material – for now. "The Hell Hounds of Krim" – recorded during rehearsals and featured on a tour book-and-CD set for sale at the merch table – was the march-in music to a polyrhythmic upheaval of "Red." The first piece in the encore, "Hoo Doo," was a suspense of short, arhythmically triggered blasts of improvisation – a classic Crimson test of fan patience and stamina.
Fripp, now 68, presided over this two-hour unveiling of his eighth Crimson with apparent, characteristic distance: seated at the far right side of the back riser, wearing headphones and guarded by a monolith of outboard gear. He has always seemed, on stage, like a reluctant guest at his own party. But his formative and still essential place in the music was evident when the density of textures and motion opened around him. His rapidly strummed chords served as both rhythmic girders and tremors of melody through the two parts of "Larks' Tongue" and the extended, inky convulsion of Red's "Starless." Fripp slashed through the drummers' overlapping math with long, siren-like notes laden with harmonic distortion. And in several striking passages with Collins' sax and flute, he played languid, luxuriant arpeggios that suggested the Byrds on Mars – angular, resonant, even romantic.
Embracing the Moment
The future of this Crimson beyond the U.S. tour, especially in studio-album form, is uncertain. "Crimson as a musical undertaking can't be judged from its records," Fripp said in a recent British interview. "It can only be judged by live performance."
He emphasized the latter point in Albany, in a pre-recorded welcoming announcement played over the PA a few minutes before showtime. "Embrace the moment," Fripp suggested in his soft, precise speaking voice, firmly requesting that the audience turn off and stow all electronic devices. "Use your ears to record and your eyes to video."
It worked. I periodically looked around the hall, for the tell-tale glow of cell phone cameras and recorders. There were none, all night. If you want a piece of this "Schizoid Man," you have to be there.

Heb de afgelopen weken twee oudjes van King Crimson op CD gekocht en wel de aller eerste CD uitgaves. Vanaf mijn 18e jaar niet meer gehoord te hebben is het na ruim 30 jaar toch een heel welkome luister ervaring om het eens vanaf CD te horen ipv krakende en bekraste LPs.

Het is je opgevallen dat op de eerste Polydor cd een gitaarsolo van Fripp op "Matte Kudasai" is verwijderd die wel op de lp stond ? De oorspronkelijke versie komt op latere cd versies weer terug als Matte Kudasai (alternative version). Die eerste cd heeft dus niet wat er op het oorspronkelijke album stond.quote:

Het is mij bekend dat er bij veel CDs die eerst op LP waren verschenen bij enkele nummers de eindmix iets anders klinkt dan wat er op de LP staat. Maar helaas heb ik geen vergelijkings materiaal (de LP) buiten de 2 eerste en tweede CD persing van deze titel. Feit is wel dat er de afgelopen 30 jaar minstens 20 verschillende CD uitvpeingen zijn verschenen waarbij Robert Fripp de mastertapes keer op keer onder handen heeft genomen om er telkens naar zijn mening weer wat anders van de maken. Schijnbaar had hij in 1981 toen Discipline verscheen een heel ander idee hoe de muziek moest klinken en heeft hij later besloten bij veel re-pressings de eindmix naar eigen inzicht te veranderen.quote:

Dit is ook duidelijk te horen op de LP USA live die in 2002 voor het eerst op CD werd uitgebracht. Op de CD heeft hij bepaalde gitaar en viool solo's wel heel erg op de voorgrond gemixt die op de LP nauwelijks te horen zijn, waarbij ik de indruk heb dat hij het allemaal harder en extremer wil laten klinken dan het in werkelijkheid is.
Maargoed ik heb nu een eerste CD perisng Red gevonden voor een leuk prijsje (Black Triangle Japan uit 1987) ben benieuwd hoe die klinkt na ruim 30 jaar niet meer gehoord te hebben. Op Yoiutube zijn veel King Crimson video's verwijderd, waarschijnlijk vanwege schending van het auteursrecht.

En een album vol nieuw materiaal lijkt me ook best fijn.
Vandaag dan de CD vanuit Italie ontvangen en dacht laat ik de nacht maar eens rustig naar deze lang vervlogen miuziek luisteren, maar al vanaf het openingsnummer ''Red'' knalde na ruim 33 jaar weer heerlijk de muziek in mijn oren alsof het 3 dagen geleden was dat ik het album voor het laatsts gehoord had. Ik kwam nauwelijks tot rust en moest om de onderbuurvrouw niet ruw uit haar slaap te halen de volumeknop temperen. Het nummer ''One more red nightmare'' laat een heerlijke mix horen tussen jazzrock, metal en dubbele saxofoon. Maar dan het laatste nummer '' Starless'' dat klinkt zowel op het live album USA alsook op dit studio album magistraal en die 12 minuten lijken wel 12 seconden te duren, de afsluiter had voor mij gerust 45 minuten mogen duren. Jammer dat ze na dit studio album tot het meestelijke Discipline ruim 7 jaar geen albums meer hebben gemaakt buiten het hoogstaande live album USA om.
Kortom een score 4,5 na slecht 2 luisterbeurten en ruim 30 jaar vanwege een inmiddels uitgegaande relatie uit mijn gehoor te zijn geweest.
Leuk detail is wel dat alleen de Japanse CDs exact dezelfde cover layout heeft als de LP destijds uit 1974. Het verschil is te zien in de witte belijning (kader) dat bij de gewone EG/Virgin CDs is weggelaten.
Mijn CD is deze uitvoering.

Fripp tells the Telegraph: “I’ve discussed the possibility of working in Europe next year, including the UK in September. There are still problems to do with the quality of venues – but it’s being looked into.”
He recently revealed that the current lineup, featuring Mel Collins, Tony Levin, Pat Mastelotto, Gavin Harrison, Jakko Jakszyk and Bill Rieflin, is the first with which he’s genuinely enjoyed touring. Now he says: “It’s the first Crimson where I don’t sense any animosity or resentment from at least one member. This is a group from the get-go; the money is divided equally.”
The 68-year-old accepts the accusation from former colleagues that he was a hard taskmaster in previous incarnations of the band. “I’m a very difficult person to work with – because in King Crimson there was a founding statement to be honoured, going back to 1969,” he says.
“And if what is available fails to meet what I see as a responsibility to the larger Crimson, then that gap has to be met by someone. And it would fall to me. So it’s not a comfortable place.”
But his current activities come after a period in which he discovered a great deal of personal happiness, which he says made it easier to face returning to the road. “My wife told me I was in danger of becoming dull,” Fripp explains. “What I’m doing now was partly a necessity. When you’re happy, it’s time to pull out the pointed stick.”

SPOILERQ: What’s a THRAK BOX?
A: As the name suggests, it’s a boxed set of material by King Crimson drawn from the double trio line-up of the mid-1990s.
Q: Ooh, I liked that line-up. What’s in it then?
A: 12CDs, 1DVD-a, 1DVD & 2Blu-Ray discs, featuring studio & live recordings, many previously unreleased, from the earliest band rehearsals to their final gathering in Nashville in 1997. In addition, much of the material is presented in new 5.1 Surround & Hi-Resolution stereo mixes.
Q: Tell me more.. what’s on the CDs?
A: CD1: JurassiKc THRAK - is an assemblage of material from the recording sessions for the album compiled by David Singleton - similar to ’Keep That One Nick’ on the Larks’ Tongues Boxed set - placing the listener in the studio with the band as the material was composed and recorded. You can, for example, hear the band experimenting with different drums parts for "Inner Garden" & a wonderful early vocal before that song was divided into two. Similar excitements await listeners with all the other songs. There are also seven pieces that didn’t make it onto the final album.
CD2: Max VROOOM - features the long-unavailable mini-album VROOOM, augmented with tracks & edits from the KC Club release: The VROOOM Sessions - all material re-compiled & remastered at DGM.
CD3: THRAK - is the 2002 remaster of the original album.
CD4: ATTAKcATHRAK (The Vicar’s THRAK) – is a sort of sequel to THRaKaTTaK insofar as it’s assembled from live improvs - but simultaneously very different – one of David Singleton’s best pieces of production. The editing process for the new improv album provides more form and function to the material without compromising the spirit of the original improvs.
Unlike THRaKaTTaK, which was based on stereo board recordings, this album is newly mixed in both stereo and surround sound from multi-track tapes.
CD5: THRAK - is the 2015 Jakko Jakszyk/Robert Fripp remix of the original album, described by Robert Fripp as “transformative – a re-imagining of stereo in the early 21st century.”
CD6: Byte Size THRAK - is a compilation of singles edits, live tracks from promos, a 12" mix edit – some of which are making their debut appearance on commercially available disc & extracts from writing sessions from the final Nashville rehearsals in 1997.
CDs7/8: Kcensington THRAK -is a newly mixed release of the band’s London concerts in 1995. Mixed from multi-track tapes by Jakko Jakszyk, and mastered by David Singleton & Robert Fripp ("to make it rock even harder" apparently). Other than video releases, it is also the first live show from this band available in surround sound (see Blu-Ray below).
CDs 9/10: New YorKc THRAK - features a complete setlist from the 1995 run of shows in the city, some material previously released on VROOOM VROOOM (now deleted) & the KC Club release On Broadway. Drawn from multi-track tapes, mixed by Adrian Belew & Ken Latchney - all newly remastered at DGM.
CDs 11/12: AzteKc THRAK - features a complete setlist from the Mexico City concerts in 1996 - released, in part, on VROOOM VROOOM - mixed from the original multi-tracks by Robert Fripp, R Chris Murphy & David Singleton & recently remastered at DGM.
Q: Sounds great, what’s on the Hi-Res discs?
A: If the stereo material sounds wonderful (& it does) the Hi-Res stereo & especially the 5.1 Surround Sound mixes are a revelation. This is a line-up that’s best heard in multi-channel Surround Sound.
Blu-Ray I is, we believe, the most comprehensive Hi-Res audio only disc yet assembled & features three complete albums 5.1 Surround Sound mixes: THRAK, ATTAKcATHRAK & Kcensington THRAK.
These three albums also appear in Hi-Res stereo - THRAK in both its original & new stereo mixes - plus a further three complete albums are included in Hi-Res stereo, JurassiKc THRAK, THRAKaTTAK & the official live bootleg of one of the earliest shows by the double trio in Argentina: B’Boom.
A recipient of a test disc of BD1 summed it up: “The blu-ray audio is astonishing and presents all the material in a glorious new light. I can’t say enough about the wonder of this blu-ray.”

Blu-Ray II is no less complete & features an audio/visual feast:
1) A complete concert filmed live at The Warfield Theatre, San Francisco from 1995 - previously unreleased - with all footage newly transferred from the original tapes, mastered for high definition and 5.1 Surround Sound newly mixed by David Singleton from the multi-track tapes of the show
2) The live footage from the 1995 Live in Japan performance - all footage newly transferred from the original tapes, mastered for High Definition with the original surround sound remastered by David Singleton & Neil Wilkes.
3) Tony’s Road Movies - footage of the band on the road as filmed by Tony Levin - all footage newly mastered for High Definition & featuring a soundtrack of previously unreleased material drawn from the band’s earliest rehearsals in 1994 - the first time that Robert Fripp, Trey Gunn, Tony Levin, Pat Mastelotto and Bill Bruford met together (at Bill’s own studio). Originally captured in stereo on DAT, the audio has been up-mixed to Surround Sound so that all of the video features can be enjoyed in multi-channel audio.
4) The EPK of the making of the THRAK album at Peter Gabriel’s RealWorld Studios with newly mixed Surround Sound audio. Additionally, this disc is being built to include a further unique feature whereby, with a press of a button, the disc will function as a pure audio disc for all audio material featured in the audio/video section.
Both blu-ray discs set new standards for what can be done with this format. The DVD-a disc features THRAK in 5.1 Surround Sound & Hi-Res stereo of both the new & original mixes. & the DVD features The Warfield Theatre concert & Tony’s Road Movies.
Q: Wow, that’s comprehensive but why include dvds & Blu-Ray - sharing material?
A number of reasons: 1) It wouldn’t make sense to try to make two editions - 1 with DVD/DVD-a & one with Blu-Ray.
2) Some fans want both - especially in America where a number of in car systems are DVD-a compatible.
3) Some fans want both if they currently have DVD & intend to buy a Blu-Ray player.
4) By including all options within the one set we can make it usable by the widest possible audience. None of the Blu-Ray or dvd/dvd-a discs are region locked & the dvd-a is a hybrid disc fully compatible with all dvd players.
Q: OK, but what if I can’t afford the box but still want to hear the new stereo & 5.1 mixes?
A CD/DVD-a release in the same format as the other KC40th anniversary series will be issued on the same day.
Q: When is that?
A: Mid-October - the 16th is the date we’re aiming for.

En heel anders ook dan eerdere concerten die ik van KC gezien heb.Dit was de eerste keer dat ik KC zag zonder Belew, en dat maakt het toch wel heel anders. Belew was duidelijk de frontman, het middelpunt van de belangstelling, en die rol heeft Jakko Jakszyk zeker niet overgenomen. Er was geen front man - en dus ook verder geen communicatie richting publiek . Geen bandleden of songs introduceren dus ...
Knap hoe Jakszyk die oude nummers van Lake en Wetton weet te zingen, maar hij heeft niet echt een eigen stijl vind ik.
Met Belew is ook een hoop van de schreeuwerigheid vertrokken. Het straalt allemaal veel meer rust uit dan vroeger. De concerten die ik me dan het double trio (1995/96) herinner waren vooral 2 uur lang vol gas, met maar een paar rustmomentjes. Dit was allemaal veel sublieler naar mijn gevoel. Natuurlijk kan je met drie drummers een hoop herrie maken, maar dat gebeurde eigenlijk relatief weinig. Vooral Mastelotto was veel bezig met kleine dingetjes. Leuk hoe die drie drummers hun eigen stijl hebben, en elkaar aanvullen.
Ster van de avond was toch wel Mel Collins. Hij maakte het grootste verschil in vergelijking met de band van de afgelopen jaren. Eindelijk weer eens wat echt accoustisch werk. Mooi dat hij ook de ruimte kreeg in nummers waar je dat nou niet direct zou verwachten.

Jeremy became a full-contributor to the Seven-Headed Beast during the 2017 EuroTour, a remarkable achievement for Jezza to adopt the entire repertoire on both drums and keyboards. Bill is presently returning from his Sabbatical, and now The Beast has Eight Heads.
Jeremy and Bill are both multi-instrumental, so King Crimson is likely to be making a lot more noise than before. Even.

Vind Beat (1982) helemaal geen tegenvaller. OK uit de kleurige drieluik uit de jaren '80 is deze wel het minste. Discipline en de gele LP of CD is inderdaad wat beter, al hoor ik in Three of a Perfect Pair erg veel Talking Heads invloeden. Kant A van de LP klinkt wat ''poppy'' de B kant wat meer experimenteel met hier en daar fusion invloeden.quote:

De Japanse versie van Vienna komt wel in september - maar dan met een bonus cd "Live in Japan" - die niet bij de Europese versie zit. Dus misschien toch maar die bestellen als die een beetje betaalbaar is.
En ik begreep uit de blog van David Singleton dat er dit jaar weer een box uitkomt. Geen idee wat ... 2001-03 lijkt me het meest voor de hand liggend ....
En een mooie Bruford box idd
Ik vind overigens wel dat die live uitvoering van Indiscipline van vorig jaar niet echt werkt . En ook Neurotica is zo'n typisch Belew nummer, ik snap niet dat ze dat soort nummers door Jakko Jakszyk laten zingen. Maak er dan desnoods een instrumentale versie van.

Er dan is er inderdaad de jaarlijkse box : de 27 disk versie van het materiaal van 1970-72 ( dus Poseidon / Lizard / Islands / Eartbound met nog wat extra's uit de cassetterecorder)

Dat heeft concertorganisator Mojo bekendgemaakt. De kaarten voor het concert van vrijdag 13 juli zijn inmiddels bijna uitverkocht.
Het concert van King Crimson onder leiding van Robert Fripp duurt drie uur. De voorverkoop voor het concert van King Crimson begint volgende week vrijdag 8 december om 10.00 uur via Ticketmaster.

As listeners to last year’s rush-released official bootleg from June 2017 recorded in Chicago discovered, this band gets better by the year. Given the amount of rehearsals, practicing, constantly expanding repertoire base (nearly six hours’ worth of material ready to select from on any given night), wealth of experience among musicians, technicians/sound crew, more comfortable travelling arrangements, better PA systems/mixing desks & the fact that the band is playing, for the most part, in purpose built theatres rather than the more imaginatively named but sonically challenged venues that hosted rock gigs in previous decades, this should come as no surprise. But it does. Perhaps it’s still part of the Rock’n’Roll myth – the ‘hope I die before I get old’ thought process that seems forever associated with rock music that’s proved so difficult to alter. Whatever the reason, the concept of a band maturing, re-inventing itself and being able to present music from a lengthy history in recognisable but ever-changing ways, still with same sense of wonder as if it were newly-written, remains, if not unique, certainly notable.
A few weeks after the Chicago concert, the first part of 2017’s tour reached its final destination – five nights’ of concerts in Mexico City. All of the concerts were recorded and filmed with a view to issuing a definitive document of Crimson live in 2017 & “Meltdown” is the result of that process. With over two hours of HD filmed performance and three hours of audio – including, for the first time with this line-up, audio recordings of Breathless, Discipline, Moonchild & Tony & Jeremy’s nightly Cadenza improvs – “Meltdown” offers a comprehensive overview of a band at the very peak of its performing ability.

The albums: “In the Court of the Crimson King”, “In The Wake of Poseidon”*, “Lizard” and “Islands” are presented in the 40th anniversary edition mixes as mixed and produced by Steven Wilson and Robert Fripp in 2009 and 2010. This is the first time that these mixes have appeared on vinyl*.
Additionally, a 2LP set of rarities is included (track-listing below) – many of them mixed and produced by Steven Wilson and all new to vinyl, except for the single, ‘Catfood’. “The Alternative Guide to King Crimson” is presented in the gatefold artwork originally used for the 1975 compilation “The Young Person’s Guide to King Crimson”.
A full sized replica of the original King Crimson timeline booklet which accompanied that compilation is also included.
All albums are pressed using 200gram super heavyweight vinyl for the best audio reproduction.
The albums were cut at Loud Mastering by Jason Mitchell from original hi-res sources as prepared by Steven Wilson and approved by Robert Fripp.

King Crimson 1972 - 1974 presents the band’s celebrated trio of studio albums from that period “Larks’ Tongues in Aspic”, “Starless and Bible Black”** and “Red” in their 40th anniversary edition mixes as mixed and produced by Steven Wilson and Robert Fripp in 2009 - 2012.
This is the first time that these mixes have appeared on vinyl.**
All albums are presented in their original sleeves.

All albums are pressed using 200gram super heavyweight vinyl for the best audio reproduction.
The albums were cut at Loud Mastering by Jason Mitchell from original hi-res sources as prepared by Steven Wilson and approved by Robert Fripp.

However, the countries being visited (although not extensively) are: Germany, UK, (likely) Holland, Poland, France, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Mexico, US, Canada, Brazil, Argentina and Chile. This assumes the world doesn't get much crazier than it is already, noting that it will.
