En weer back to El Hierroquote:11/11/2011 @ 09:01 Scientists prepare for a new eruption, possibly to the north of El Hierro. After a period of calm came a 4.6 degree earthquake this morning, at 00:20 located to the north-west of El Hierro. This is the strongest quake to hit the island so far. Scientists are expecting a new eruption to take place and claim that data points towards a new eruption off the coast of Frontera, to the north-west of the island as this is where all the lastest earthquakes are being detected. So far today there have been 23 earthquakes over 1.5 degrees on the island, three of these have been felt by the islands population.quote:Data Update 11/11 08:44 UTC:
- The 4.6 magnitude earthquake was also felt on the islands of La Palma and Tenerife
- we want to stress (before we get a number of questions about it) that this earthquake will have NO relation with the volcanoes on La Palma and Tenerife.
- Joke just told me that she sees NO sea jacuzzi from her house in El Pinar (400 m above the Las Calmas sea). Later today she will move to the viewpoint @ the Naos mountain (where the official journalists are standing)
- Joke is not a journalist of course, she is an artist, and became our volunteer El Hierro eyes while commenting in this website on what she saw. Gradually Joke became our human webcam (she invented the word herself) and reported to the thousands of daily ER readers. Just as many of our readers, she became fascinated by the volcano she is living up the last 25 years.
Data Update 11/11 00:55 UTC:
- a magnitude 4.6 earthquake happened in the El Golfo bay at 00:20 November 11. The depth was 21 km. This is one of the strongest earthquakes on El Hierro so far.
The earthquake was felt as a light to moderate shaking. If confirmed at 4.6 by IGN, the Los Roquillos tunnel maybe closed again. The epicenter of the earthquake was in the coastal El Golfo bay area.quote:NOTE AVCAN 315 - EARTHQUAKE ACTIVITY-VOLCANIC - HIERRO ISLAND - NOVEMBER 11 2011-11:00 h peninsular - Seismic activity remains high, with moderate seismicity in the marina del Golfo and a very important signal of volcanic tremor in the area La Restinga, which increased in amplitude and has become more unstable, presenting explosions. The magnitude of the earthquakes between 3.5 and 1.2. New earthquakes 29. Felt earthquakes 3. Depths between 17 and 22km (and three to 15, 15 and 16km and two at 23 and 23km). The day before yesterday 54. Yesterday 46. Now go 23. A total of 11,453 earthquakes are located in El Hierro by IGN from 9:00 am of July 19, 2011 (Enrique).quote:Update 11/11 10:44 UTC:
- Joke reported that a new circle is showing from the higher areas of the island. She is now at the Naos mountain 150 meter above the Las Calmas sea. If something important will be seen there, our audience will know it within minutes.quote:Update 11/11 10:44 UTC:
- Jose Manuel Soria, the candidate of the Partido Popular for the presidency of the Canary Islands (elections to be held on November 20), is currently campaigning at El Hierro and wants to visit Montańa Naos to have a view at the eruption area. He may not be aware of all the journalists he will find at this viewing spot
The evacuated people at El Hierro as well as the business sector are highly dependent on aid from the Canary Islands government.
- Paulino Rivero, e memeber of the PSOE, is the current president of the Canary Islands and apart of a lot of promises, only little has been done to help the people of La Restinga and Las Puntas. Mr. Rivera has now approved bills for direct aid to business owners employing personnel.
- The central government has now given a period of 10 days to fill in the necessary documents to obtain aid.

quote:11/11/2011 @ 12:40 Two webcams are to go live today on the island of El Hierro. One will point at the eruption area in the Mar de Las Calmas sea and another one will point in the general direction of the harbour of La Restinga. Two more webcams are due to be installed in the north, off the coast of Frontera where there is increased activity underwater and a new eruption is predicted. This comes after an agreement between the El Hierro council and Telefonica.

Diario El Hierro writes just before noon that the Cabildo (El Hierro board) and Telefonica will announce today the long awaited webcam overlooking the Las Calmas sea. The obscure comment currently on the page will hopefully be removed.
+ we will have 2 webcamas ready, 1 in the north (El Golfo) and 1 in the south (Las Calmas sea).
Instead of just putting the device to work, both parties have called a press conference at 13:30 local time today, to tell what we probably will see.
Increased probability of new eruption to north of #elhierro. Underwater eruption predicted to north of El Hierro, in area known as El Golfoquote:El Hierro : Largest Earthquake Hits This Morning
IGN scientists observing seismic and volcanic activity on the Island of El Hierro recorded the strongest earthquake to date in the current earthquake swarm - measuring some 4.6 on the richter scale. The activity was measured at a depth of 21km at 00.20 GMT, with an epicenter in the El Golfo bay, off the northern coast of the Island.
The tremors were felt as far away as La Palma and Tenerife, which has heightened concerns that any seismic activity on the former Island "could" have an effect on the Cumbre Vieja Volcano. Observers have concerns that a collapse of the Volcano would cause a landslide, which would in turn cause a tsunami that could potentially devastate much of the eastern seaboard of the US.
Sources on the island have reported that the only incident arising from the activity is a landslide which closed the HI1 road, which was closed for a number of hours until the debris could be cleared.
A further 21 earthquakes were recorded between 2.8 and 3.1 on the richter scale, all located off the coast of Frontera to the north of the Island, according the IGN.
Meanwhile, two beaches on the south of the island, Tacoron and Puerto Naos have been closed to the public due to a government worker being taken ill while measuring carbon dioxide levels.
quote:11/11/2011 @ 14:23 The director of the National Geographic Institute has said that they are expecting a possible double eruption to the north of El Hierro both underwater and on land, according to the latest data available to them.
quote:Update 11/11 13:19 UTC
- Diario de Avisos writes that IGN scientists have confirmed that an eruption in the El Golfo area is possible and that an eruption on the coast itself cannot be excluded. To make this happen, more powerful earthquakes are needed to allow the magma to the surface.
- Scientists have also said the the eruption in the La Restinga, Las Calmas sea area is still continuing although almost nothing can be seen on the surface.
quote:Update 12/11 – 09:07 UTC :
- 13 volcanic earthquakes since midnight.
- NO earthquakes stronger than 3.0
- Harmonic tremor is still present with regular powerful bursts
- The lack of powerful earthquakes and the continuing strong harmonic tremor are indicating (on the basis of the recent activity) that a new vent might have been opened at a deeper location, not showing any jacuzzi or serious turbulence. The first eruption period had similarities with the present situation. Recent satellite images would certainly reveal this kind of eruption.
quote:Update 12/11 – 12:36 UTC :
- Joke Volta sees from El Pinar the same than we can see on the webcam. Sometimes an active area and a few minutes later a flat sea. She will go to the "press viewpoint" later this afternoon. The "press viewpoint" is open to all public until the sun goes behind the horizon.
quote:14/11/2011 @ 14:47 – After a calm weekend for the volcano eruption process to the south of El Hierro over the Mar de Las Calmas, it appears that the eruption process has started again with the report of the ‘bubbling’ and ‘steaming’ effect coming from the sea surface.
quote:Update 14/11 – 14:40 UTC :
- Joke reports an increase of the temperature at the Naos mountain (ER : not necessarily because of the activity)
- She also sees stones ejected above the surface.
- The helicopter of the Guardia Civil and Involcan is flying over the see
- RTVE is also present (footage probably tonight on TV)
Update 14/11 – 14:24 UTC :
- Joke reports a strong sulfur smell at the Naos mountain. [Deze was de afgelopen dagen behoorlijk afgenomen.] The bus driver who took her there said that he saw some stones ejected out of the water.
