Kate and Gerry McCann: Risk evaluation and evolution Times Online:
“Everyone I know who had been to Portugal with their children said it was very family friendly, and it did feel like that,” says Kate. “If I’d had to think for one second about it, it wouldn’t have happened. I never even had to think like that, to make the decision.
It felt so safe that I didn’t even have to – I mean, I don’t think we took a risk. If I put the children in the car the chances of having an accident would be greater than somebody coming in, breaking into your apartment and lifting a child out of her bed. But you never think, I shouldn’t put the children in the car.”
Sky News:
Ian Woods: Looking back, I mean,
did you see anything suspicious in the days leading up to her abduction? Did you notice anything? Have you been racking your brains to try and think whether people might have been watching?
Kate McCann:
We didn’tGerry McCann:
If we did we wouldn’t tell you [laughs] because it may be important information but we didn’t. You know, it was such a relaxing holiday. In fact as a family unit, up until that night, I know for friends who were here and certainly for us, it was as good a holiday as we have had with the children – up until that point.
BBC:
“Mr McCann said that,
before Madeleine went missing, he and his wife had been concerned by the security at the back of their Praia da Luz apartment when "maybe the weak spots were at the front". "It's a corner flat with trees overlooking it - somebody could be hiding there or watching out of view," he said. He added: "I've no doubt that Madeleine was targeted and that makes us sick to the core to think that someone was watching us and our daughter and then targeted her - I think the true word is a predator. But you just don't think there's any trouble and it's certainly the furthest thing from our mind."
Daily Mail wéér met verhaa van Gerry's zus Philomena McCann : "Kate McCann screamed in "anger and disgust" when she was offered a two-year jail sentence if she confessed to killing Madeleine, relatives revealed yesterday. She repeatedly shouted out "No, no, no" when she learned of the alleged police "deal", her sister-in-law Philomena McCann said. Mrs McCann's lawyer told her that police would offer her a two-year sentence if she pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of her daughter."
Dat was al op September 8, 2007 door Gerry's zus Philomena McCann verteld: "Madeleine’s aunt, Philomena McCann, claimed yesterday that Portuguese detectives had offered Mrs McCann a deal if she “confessed to accidentally killing Madeleine”. She told ITV News: “They tried to get her to confess . . . by offering her a deal through her lawyer — ‘if you say you killed Madeleine by accident and then hid her and disposed of the body, then we can guarantee you a two-year jail sentence or even less’.”
The TimesMaar wacht even, dat vertelde ze idd al veel eerder maar werd ontkracht door hun Portugese advocaat:
quote:
Ook de
BBC meldt dat: Mr Corner had previously said Mrs McCann told him officers had tried to "cut her a deal" under which she would serve only two years in jail if she confessed. The media have set up camp outside the McCanns' rented villa But Portugal-based British journalist Paul Luckman told the BBC that under Portuguese law there is a set sentence for each crime which not even a judge can change. He said it would not be possible for the police to make such a deal."

Four months after the signal of suspicion launched by the British sniff dogs expert in detecting body odors, the Judicial Police (PJ) decided to make a thorough search at the interior and corners of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Luz, in the district of Lagos, as well as areas surrounding the temple, including the old cemetery, now transformed into garden area, in attempt to follow clues concerning the concealment of the body of Madeleine McCann.
In consequence of the alert given by the British dogs in other places, some researchers of the PJ, maintain the belief that the child died in the apartment and the body had been in the boot of the grey Renault Scenic car, rented by parents three weeks later, they even admitted, months ago, that the girl would be "on the seabed or in the Church."
The DN learnt from various sources, the new approach made about two weeks ago in Praia da Luz, "informally and with the maximum discretion" to try to dissipate doubts, led elements of the team of PJ - that are led by the new coordinator of the Department the Criminal Investigation (DIC) of Portimão, Paulo Rebelo - "to spend a day with the Catholic priest José Manuel Pacheco" in that locality. For that, the inspectors first met the priest in the house where his parents live in the village of Odiáxere (Lagos), and then arranged to go in separate cars, to the Church of Nossa Senhora da Luz in order not be seen and thus avoid the presence of journalists.
The track Church
"The police have spoken several times with the priest in Praia da Luz since the disappearance of Madeleine," assured the same sources. Nevertheless, it was not possible to know whether José Pacheco has already provided some formal deposition in the DIC of Portimão as a witness in this case. Unsucessful were also the attempts to contact the priest throughout all the day yesterday.
In these steps, with the priest, the inspectors wanted to know, for example, what was the relationship of the priest and the involvement of the church with the McCann couple during the five months that they remained in Algarve till they were made defendants, in September, on the suspicion of the death of their daughter and concealment of the body, especially given the fact that José Pacheco gave the key of the church to Gerry and Kate so they could pray in private and at any time, apart from the vigils for Madeleine promoted by the parish.
The decision to give the key of the Church, such as the DN said at the time, ended up causing some problems, particularly with the Bishop of Algarve, D. Manuel Quintas. It's important to remember also, that caused too much surprise the fact that the McCanns, shortly after the disappearance of Maddie in May the 3rd, have asked the responsible of the "Ocean Club" the presence of the priest, even before the GNR and PJ were called to the site. Only the late hour prevented that phone call on that thursday night to José Pacheco, who finally met the couple on Saturday, after Gerry and Kate were heard in PJ of Portimão.
